  • Review of the Honda CBR650R which was kindly lent to me by the guys at Honda Maidstone - www.maidstonehonda.co.uk/
    Wow what a fantastic machine the CBR650R is! I had a great time on this bike and it wasn’t really expected.
    Firstly lets talk about the looks as the CBR650R is one seriously good looking bike. Stunning from every angle and in the black and red combo I think it looks fantastic. I have a nephew aged 11 and I send him pics of the bikes I have been riding and the one he was most impressed with was the picture of this.
    The engine of the CBR650R is the same as the CB650R however the bike felt a lot faster for me. I’m unsure how much of this is phycological because of the riding position and looks or whether the fairing makes a huge difference, however when you’re on the bike it really does matter - if a bike feels faster then in the way it matters, it is.
    Riding the CBR650R is pretty effortless. The CBR650R is a lot of fun in the twisties, slicing through the turns in a predictable and confidence inspiring way. The CBR650R is a bike I would personally be inclined to take on a track day to really push it.
    I think the most remarkable thing about this bike is that all this praise is being bestowed upon a 650cc. I’ve not ridden a lot of bikes in this category and it has opened my eyes up to just how much fun they can be.
    Through town it loses some points to a more upright seating position and there is the potential for some pains after an hour or 2, but this is a bike one can easily fall in love in and hey, love hurts.

    I test rode this bike a few month ago. It was the full sports package, so it had the pillion cover and a quickshifter etc. It was an accidental test ride as I popped in to my local dealership in the last minute to ask them to check my rear brake. Anyhow, I asked about this bike, they said they had it and it was free for a test ride so I hopped on. Was so excited I forgot to ask about the quickshifter and ended up not using it lol. I've the '17 CB650F and I could see the improvement they've made in terms of the brakes, the gearbox, the tyres, the engine, the display etc. but once I got back on my own bike I must say the upright(-er) position and the wider bars felt a thousands times better. I'd love a sportsbike to ride on track or carve twisties with but I'm wouldn't torture myself with one for everyday riding and touring.

    Yo’, Tommy. My first Motorcycle was a 1989 CBR 600 Hurricane. Remember that one? I have been on a new CBR1000 and they are much lighter than my old 600 was. Phenomenal performance machines that have come a long-long way! My Suzuki-B-King Weighs about the same as my old 600 did, but at least it bests the old thing by 50 FT Lbs Torque, and over 100 hp! Crazy fun!

    Thank You, I thoroughly enjoyed your review. I'm just getting my license (Canada) and this will be my 1st bike. Let's hope I don't kill myself. My rationale is I want a ZX-6R or R6 but I need something a little less lethal but still look good so here is my compromise. I really don't want to start on an R3 so if everything falls in place this will be it. Thanks again Tommy for a banger of a review cheers!!!

    I have watched lots and lots of tests on CZcams of the CBR650R and CB650R and it seems so funny that the testers remark how the CBR is so quick and yet the two are exactly the same specification except the fairing and handle bar position and at high end a little more power because of the ram of air on the CBR650R.
    CBR650R definitely looks better, as in sporty than the CB650R.
    You will regret having a tail tidy on the CBR650R and CB650 in the rain and on dirty wet roads.

    Awesome review mate and good resolution video. Unfortunately, we only get the LAMS (i.e. A2) restricted version in Australia? Do you happen to know how the acceleration is like for a restricted CBR650R? My understanding is that the restriction only applies above 6000rpm. I'm hoping that the restricted version still accelerates reasonably well. In that case it could be a good commuter. I'm not interested in high speeds. Cheers!

    I see you also rode the Triumph Street Triple RS a few months back. The question is which bike do you prefer the CB650R or the Street Triple RS ?
    Triumph is just over £3K dearer, so maybe it's not a valid comparison. ( Although the Street Triple S is somewhat closer in price to the CB650R )

    • @TommyBarnezTV
      @TommyBarnezTV  Před 4 lety

      Great question (presuming you mean this CBR650R rather than the CB650R). For me the street triple rs is the 'better' bike. The ride and components of the ST, brakes, tft screen, quick shifter etc are all so good that the ride is sublime. Though as you say, its 3k more expensive...
      The CBR650R for me looks better and the fairing makes it more suited to a track day. Both bikes have made me want to do a track day on them however the fairing and 3k saving would probably see me getting the CBR650R for track days.
      Neither would work as a daily for what I need from a bike.
      So really hard to say for definite. I think I prefer the ST rs however if I had the money in the bank and was buying an extra bike with those two to choose from I would be debating it for weeks if not months. If you threw the Daytona 765 into the mix I may go for that - even though I've not ridden one 😂.

      @@TommyBarnezTV Hmm yes , the Daytona 765 , I guess Triumph will release an "unlimited" on a few months after the limited edition one. They're going to capitalise on the Moto 2 tie up. Guess I'll get a test ride of a Daytona at my 1 year service next year of my Speed Twin. In the meantime all I'll need to do is find guessing something like £12K. Unlikely to happen !

    • @karlosh9286
      @karlosh9286 Před 4 lety

      @TommyBarnez I might ride one next year. The Honda dealer had more issues letting me have a test ride this year because I only passed my DAS "A" licence in early May this year.
      Once I've had my licence for a year, it sounds like it will be easier. I can't afford another bike until next year :( .
      Triumph dealers maybe cater for the "middle aged newbie rider demographic" like me , and let me have test rides for a £20 fee , refundable if I bought a bike , which I did !
      Honda really need to fix the display. They don't need a TFT (although the Triumph one was excellent), just a plain LCD like the Suzuki SV650 that can be read in bright sunlight, and back lit at night.

      The major changes were styling and the guage cluster. The bike needs to hit 8k rpm to get to the fun part IMO as an owner. It will really go once you hit the power band. It's not a supersport like the R6 etc. where the throttle is fly by wire and another 40 hp. The exhaust is very mellow below the power band. Nice for cruising but you really have to thrash the throttle a bit to get nice noises from it.

      I have the 2019 CBR500R with the same screen, I've seen the complaints about visibility in direct sunlight before buying it and during owning it - honestly I don't have any issues with it whatsoever. On max brightness setting it looks great in the dark and always readable even in the most direct sunlight.
      If you have a tinted visor/drop down you'll always see it, and even when riding without it in direct sunlight behind you it only gets /so much/ harder to see. You can still read it out or move your head slightly to a different angle or block the sun with your head - the speedo is not something you stare at during riding anyway and it will never be unreadable to the point where you're wondering if you've got any petrol left or are doing 100 in a 30.
