No. Because most failures are loading a round. So if it goes ok you live. If it miss feeds you die.
I always carry hot. The only way I train. There are some countries where you can’t do that legally.

@@tryagain76 most failures are gun, ammo, or gun operator failures so you'd better carry no gun and no ammo.... What about a sword? No loading failures there... or if you're worried about distance and caliber... what about you carry a tank, or a tank carries you to work.

As an Israeli, I emphasize the importance of always being aware of your surroundings. This situational awareness is the cornerstone of effective self-defense.
Exactly. Currently there is way too much emphasis on super fast draws and instantaneous shots. Situational awareness allows you to see a threat developing, determine it’s lethality, and time to think of a tactical solution. If you have to draw and shoot in under 2 seconds you’ve already failed
This is a great video. I would like to add the fact that many of us are city boys with no access to outdoor ranges and training facilities. Some of us work 40-60 hours a week and have a family. No indoor range near me will let you shoot from the holster.
I carry with empty chamber because I have kids. I don’t have extensive training other than dry firing in front of my bathroom mirror. I’m sure the vast majority of gun owners are people like me.
Having said all that, I’d rather have my gun on me with an empty chamber than no gun at all.

I have a 380 pocket rocket and I don't load a round in the chamber until I am ready to fire. It has a very stiff slide and it can be difficult to chamber the first round. Situational awareness baby. Sight, sound and distance. If you have one hand to operate your firearm, you already let them get too close
Sad part is most who will harp on carry empty chamber don’t shoot much. If at all.
I’m sure someone can get proficient drawing like that but it will never be faster than carrying with 1 in the pipe.
It’s not about what’s “better”. It’s about the training.

People tend to forget things like safety disengage and racking one in it when you get into an extremely stressful situation. You are doing yourself a favor by carrying with one in the chamber and by carrying something that doesn't have a manual safety. The fewer hoops you have to jump through to save your life the better.
If you don't feel comfortable carrying a round in the chamber you might not be confident enough to carry at all. Carrying is a lifestyle. You have to train your behaviors with clothing, vehicle, interaction with people, around wearing a loaded gun.

@@aarons194 I can do draw, move off the x, to head shot from closed front concealment (buttoned down shirt) in 1.5 sec @ 10yds. That's not terribly fast but adding in a slide rack may add another 1/2 sec. At that point you are starting to loose the OODA loop reset advantage....

When I first started carrying. I didn't feel comfortable with one in the pipe. That lasted a couple of months until I spent a lot of time at the range. And felt comfortable with it and myself. I ONLY carry 1911's and double stacks 1911's. Because of the safety, Period! My draw is second nature to click the safety off. Great video as always Mickey!
That’s great!’ I’m glad to see that you can carry a 1911. I own 2 1911 pistols & I have tried to EDC them but for me they are just to heavy & bulky to me. I must say that I do prefer to carry full size pistols. I do carry my Glock G21 G4 sometimes in the Fall & Winter months.

Thank you! I have to carry sometimes off body (still concealed) at work and for that reason I don’t carry with one in the chamber a good portion of the time. If it’s after hours, weekends, etc. or if I know I’m going to be somewhere unfamiliar I will carry with one in the chamber. I train for both methods and eventualities.
Your videos always make me think. And that’s a good thing.

Another risk assessment. What’s your tolerable risk? What’s the likelihood and what’s the severity of the outcomes?
I wasn’t carrying hot early on because I hadn’t had enough experience and training on drawing from concealment. I was also not confident with how internal safeties functioned. The more I trained and built confidence, the more my acceptance of risk lowered. I did not want to add a failure point to my draw stroke. I became more confident that I wouldn’t touch my trigger on the draw and that risk became tolerable the more I trained. I see both sides of the coin but it’s all down to a personal risk assessment based on your level of competency, training, efficiencies, and skill.
@@averageamerican2683 exactly this.....if you can train to manipulate that extra slide movement you can train to keep your finger off the trigger. You should be training that anyway.
Safety rules say treat all guns as if they are loaded. If you are always doing that then you are doing enough....you can mitigate 99% of all gun accidents by doing 2 things. Being aware of where you are pointing the gun and keeping your finger off the trigger.
I wonder how many of the people that carry an auto unloaded also sometimes carry a revolver fully loaded and why?
A loaded SIG p226 and a loaded revolver have very similar trigger action. But one is dangerous fully loaded and one is not?
Carry with a good covered trigger guard holster, and don't have your gun out fiddling with it, keep your finger off the trigger and it will all work out.

@@CarryTrainer Well, I've grown comfortable and confident in how I do it, but I'm sure lots of us have struggle finding a way to carry while driving. Can you be comfortable? Can you quickly and safely draw from your holster? And it all ties in with "Situational awareness" while driving of course. When I'm sitting at a red light and I look around, every other driver has their face buried in their phones! They'll never see trouble coming!
Would one of those fancy "Pop-up gun holders" in your vehicle be worth it?

This video is my top videos for this topic!! Straightforward to the point, TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN!!! I have witnessed carriers that do carry one in the chamber however, have not trained sufficiently enough on their draw and presentation, and yet still have been slower than that timing. I applaud the mindset of alert awareness aligned with training under pressure.
Love your channel and yes for a few years I've always had one in the chamber but then realized that every situation is different and it's all a matter a training.
Not going to lie. It took me a bit to get use to carrying with one in the chamber. Only after sending many rounds through them. I carry now with one in chamber. But I don’t appendix carry. 3 or 4 o’clock position

You cannot shoot yourself on your draw with no round in the chamber. One is more likely to shoot themselves in training than be shot by a criminal unless you live in a dangerous area. Then move.

There are pros and cons to both, any gun is better than no gun loaded or not. Many people believe “If you carry empty chambered, you will die” that’s like calling people that don’t carry “walking dead”.

The only thing that cracks me up with people is when they say you might as well not have a gun as to have one with an empty chamber. If you are at the mall and an active shooter shows up, the time it will take to put a round in the chamber is irrelevant. Not every incident requires a quick draw and immediate shots being taken.

It could be someone who opened your passenger door with a blade in hand and your wife or daughter sitting in that seat, now gramps is fiddling trying to chamber a round while sitting.
It's not going to happen. But, people can justify anything, justify their wrong approaches because they don't want to see the reality.
@@hansblitz7770 Yep, obviously. But the hyperbole and “You’re either an ‘operator’ or dead” stuff gets silly sometimes. People have different situations and lifestyles that sometimes don’t lend themselves to the exact same levels of ninja-like readiness.
Like I said, not EVERY situation requires a quick draw with immediate fire. I personally think that empty chamber carry can open you up to legal problems, too. If you’re chambered and ready to go, you can keep your gun in the holster until actually needed.
If you find yourself in a potentially dangerous scenario where you think you won’t have time to draw and rack it if you wait until the attack, you might be tempted to draw it and rack it in advance-which might make you the aggressor or get a menacing charge.
An injured hand, blood etc can get in the way of racking. Why the handycap. Nope one up and ready. 7/24.
"Operator"
My guy, they aren't having randoms walk between cars while they are all seated.
The type of attacks a civilian faces are more immediate, in your face, aggressive, disorientating, than any thing any "operator" will ever face.
I was a cop in a awful place, I got acid thrown in my face and I've been slashed with busted glass, and I was ready for something to go wrong.

All that you do and show us, makes a lot of sense to me. I didn't realize that your mag could accidentally fall out of your gun or become ajar enough so that it won't load. I don't always have access to a gun range. But you can practice drawing with an empty gun at home. Just make sure it is empty. Thanks for the video. I've learned some things.
I think it's just really up to the person and how they feel about it. I know it took my probably around 2 months to work up to carrying a round in the chamber. I just took baby steps, and 1st just got used to having my pistol on me while working around the house IWB & OWB. Then, I started carrying a round in the chamber OWB 1st, then IWB a few weeks after carrying a round in the chamber OWB. Now. I carry a round in the chamber all the time.
You say it's up to the individual person that means you understand some people are carrying afraid and unskilled and untrained. It's not a matter of carrying it any way you want to, carry it in it's most effective iteration.
There's no reason to carry an empty chamber, assuming you'll have time to rack the slide and send a round home before you begin to take fire.
Most people cannot draw from concealment in 3 seconds let alone time enough to draw, rack the slide, engage a subject before that person (who already has the drop on you) begins firing.
Cover the trigger guard and don't place your finger on the trigger until you've made the decision to shoot.
You don't drive a car intentionally with 1/10 of a tank of gas and say to yourself "I'll just get gas when I need it".
The argument of "it's up to the person" just proves the need for training...

Excellent video and great performance! I wish more people thought this way. I carry AIWB always loaded but sometimes I go to family’s house with kids and I might be playing with them. In that circumstance, I either don’t have one chambered or take the mag out and put it in my pocket.
I need to train that one handed and rack without a dot. Never tried it with just irons.

Also we don’t get to choose the fight the fight chooses us … We aren’t guaranteed the use of our support hand being available to rack the slide in the first place. honestly, this is how you get killed in a violent confrontation assuming everything will align perfectly for you to have enough time to correctly rack your slide and put two shots center mass on your threat .. also what is this tap racking off your belt and your thigh? Because it’s more efficient than having around in the chamber? I hope nobody really operates like that

Great video. I struggled with this for about a year. Turns out my draw to fire is about the same whether or not I have to chamber a round; learned how to chamber during the draw, so the time difference is so negligent that if that amount of time is what you needed, you’re likely dead anyways.

Appreciate your take, thank you. This discussion (and many others in the space) are so black and white, no nuance, no room for discussion. The same mindset will argue that carrying anything but a glock will get you killed because having a safety or DA first pull is too slow/difficult.
I also always appreciate how you bring overall health into it, an area many others in the space are quite obviously lacking/ignoring.

Great video my comment would be this..... I carry both ways. I work in and around Baltimore city regularly. When I carry in that area I have one in the chamber when I am working in the northern counties. More rural settings, then I carry without one in the chamber. I've even been known to pull over dump the round from the chamber. Reinserted into my magazine and get back on the road when I leave the city to work in the northern counties. Kind of a strange thing but a habit I got into doing don't know if it's good or not

I do both, empty when I have my kids at home, in the pipe all the time when on my person and when kids are at there mothers every other week. It all that mental practice as well.

I have worked for the NYPD as an Police officer I also worked for the Federal Marshals as a federal security officer watching prisoners and assets that were seized we always had a carry our gun loaded with one in the pipe-
I always like to treat my guns as if they're ready and loaded so when you don't keep one in the pipe you kind of expecting the gun to be empty and who knows something might have happened that there's one in the chamber that's one of the main reasons I do not like to carry it the firearm with a round not in the pipe cuz now I'm expecting it to be unloaded and a gun should always be considered loaded when I first got on the force we really didn't Safeguard the weapon correctly when it came to family at home I do think it is safer when it comes to kids not keeping One in the Chamber but you know what maybe that gun should be in a safe or other locked area that the kid or unwanted individuals do not have access to it.
If you need to use your firearm it's much quicker having one already in the pipe for good law abiding citizens they usually the last one to pull out a firearm so they need every Advantage they can get
I'm new to gun culture. I'm going to a PA sheriff's office this morning to apply for a carry permit. I've been gathering information for about 2 years at this point. I have yet to purchase a firearm, but am looking at a Taurus TX22 to learn to handle and to teach my wife and kids. Hoping to purchase a Sig P365X within the next 12 months. I've been enjoying your content.

I hate it when you ruin my absolutes with facts Mickey!!! I always keep one chambered but “what ifs” seem to happen if you watch these after action break downs. Time to add “what if” training to the routine.
I guess the important part about carrying empty chamber is this - understand why you're doing it. Or vice versa. Always introspect the reasons for your decisions to make better decisions.
And a person who chooses to carry an empty chamber is doing so for a sense of security or being untrained or uncomfortable or lying to themselves or confused about how a firearm works. Cover the trigger guard and don't place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
Now with cameras everywhere, we can see just how unpredictable and fast attacks can happen, reality smothers the fantasy of "I will always have two hands and time to rack the slide" is just not true.

If there was ever a situation in which I had to carry without my holster (big what-if and ill advised of course), I'd probably feel more comfortable doing so without a round in the chamber so I can certainly see some value in practicing this.

People just because a person is a cop or a military veteran don’t mean DICK when it comes to being combat effective. I’ve never had a mag fall out of my air weight . If I felt the need for more it would be a full size auto chamber loaded in holster with carbine in hand ,slung or in reach
This was not a big deal when more people carried revolvers or DA/SA automatics with hammer dropping safeties. I think what most people are concerned about when it comes to carrying with one in the chamber is relatively light trigger pull and no safety on most of the popular carry guns today. So, there is nothing wrong with looking around for a gun you are more comfortable with having a loaded chamber.
The Bad Guy ALWAYS gets to choose the time , place and manor of their attack and it will never be when you are primed and ready to draw.
True, but you may not be the intended target/victim. We each have our own threat assessment and carry accordingly.

Guys that go through life primed and ready to draw are few in number and seem a little strange, normal everyday situational awareness will suffice for most situations, hyper ready is no way to live.
I like evidence based carry decisions, and I see enough real world encounters(thanks ASP) to ever think that any unnecessary delay is smart in any way..
