It’s all well and good to quote “tradition” every time someone dares to point out uncomfortable facts, but the fact is that especially underage teenagers should be protected from exploitation in any form anywhere in the world.

Underage can be different to different cultures though. In 12 American States, for example, there is no minimum marriage age with parental permission. Without permission, Massachusetts has the youngest age of 12 for girls and 14 for boys. Legally speaking, there is no "underage" under the right circumstances, so it's not like Americans are in much of a position to argue against Asian culture.
Personally, I'm partial to the Native American approach. The way it used to be was that you were considered an adult once you demonstrated the skills of an adult regardless of your age. The fact is different people mature at different rates.

    • @ChickensAndGardening
      @ChickensAndGardening Před rokem

@@Elliandr Great point. Also, different children mature at different rates. We (in the West) tend to have one-size-fits-all when it comes to laws regulating minors (drinking, driving, marriage, employment). At one time in America and Europe, of course, children did work from young ages on the family farm, because it was how they learned to be farmers. It wasn't considered exploitation then or now (homesteaders today still tend to have large families and put their children to work doing chores, as soon as they are physically able to); it was a necessity of life, and of course it taught the children how to work. Something that we have somewhat lost in our modern societies where children are mostly in school until age 18, plus maybe summer jobs or such.

The maiko "training system" talked about here sounded similar to how k-pop industry runs their training program. They train at a young age, agency provides everything in return the agencies get majority of the groups' income until a certain point.
Anyway, I know its tradition, but I think they need to take a look at the whole system and put guardrails to prevent it from being exploited by greedy agencies.

Culture should definitely be preserved, but it shouldn't be used as a free pass to do morally objectionable actions.
Then again, people that are morally objectionable (like the rich middle aged men mentioned in the video that use their money and status to get their way) will always find an excuse to continue their practices.

There is a CZcamsr, I believe she goes by Kimono Mom’s Kitchen. Makes excellent traditional Japanese cooking videos. Anyway, she did a mini TEDTalk type lecture about her life as a CZcamsr and apparently she also trained to be Maiko. She did mention that it was hard work. She’s basically being given away from her parents and to the Geisha life. She said there are times when it got too much that she can only cry at night and call her mom. Her mom understood that by wanting to apprentice as a Maiko, she is kind of “disowned” as she now belongs to the profession. So I guess it’s pretty consistent with the Tweet. However, it didn’t sound like it was an abusive environment. It’s just really an extremely rigid structure that doesn’t give too much freedom.

In Mineko Iwasaki's memoir, she stated that she violated several youth labour laws in her time as a _maiko._ She didn't drink, except one time when she was tricked into doing so, not knowing what was in the cup. Given her upbringing, she was actually horrified over the fact that she broke drinking law. She didn't make much of an issue over serving alcohol and working late into the night. Mostly, she focused on the amount she worked, which was far in excess of how much was normally permitted by law. She herself worked far more than other _maiko_ did, to the point where she tried to work in emergency medical care for a failing kidney around her work schedule. (Fortunately for her, that didn't go as planned and she ended up taking a lot of time off.) As for the lack of payment for work, she stated that she did earn plenty in tips. Being the heir to her _okiya,_ though, everything she needed was provided by the _okiya_ and she never spent any of it, instead giving it to the staff.
According to Iwasaki, the issue of selling virginity is apparently something more associated with the long abolished institution of indentured prostitutes, _oiran._ The coming of age ceremony, _mizuage,_ for an _oiran_ apparently involved auctioning off the girl's virginity. This isn't to say that shady things don't happen to Maiko, but Iwasaki describes _mizuage_ for herself as something more innocent and celebratory and more related to her earnings. According to her, _maiko_ tend to explore their sexuality on their own, much like other teenage girls. I haven't read Arthur Golden's _Memoirs of a Geisha,_ but apparently he writes that the protagonist (who is based on Iwasaki) had her virginity sold during her _mizuage._ This, among other things, is what inspired Iwasaki to sue him and also write her own memoir.
Iwasaki's issue with the entire system of Geisha was that it was stale and far to restrictive of the teenagers and women involved in it. It also failed to prepare them for life outside of the system, in the event that they retired. She campaigned strongly for reforms, but nothing ever happened. Even when she retired at the height of her success at 29 and when 70 other women quit shortly after, nothing of substance changed.
Keeping in mind that it is just one perspective (and primarily written for a Western audience), I'd highly recommend the book, published in the US and Canada as _Geisha: A Life._

Thank you! Mizuage for Oiran and Mizuage for Maiko are two very different things (although I guess despite them being completely different professions they tend to get lumped together as yuujo) but even today, people including Meshida san seem to fail to make that distinction.
Btw the government was actively involved in separation of those two professions and intimate services were separate from entertainment, although in some part e.g. in Miyagawacho it was possible to have permits for both professions simultaneously for a short period of time, if memory serves.
I actively despise Golden as in my humble opinion he misinterpreted a lot of the information to give them more of a shock value for the western market, causing a lot of misunderstandings and false stereotypes persistent even in the present day.

Probably fair to say it's not inherently a bad tradition. But something that gets easily exploited, since the girls are put in such a vulnerable position with drunk adult men. Basically you can have a respectable party running the show and making sure the girls are quite safe. Or an abuser who would sell their own mother for a few grand, and has no sympathy for the girls. The actual problem would be the societal unwillingness to expose and punish people who clearly do bad things.

In Kyoto, they have Geisha parties with Maikos to entertain rich and middle aged men.
In Tokyo, they have maid cafes with cosplay maids to entertain rich teenagers and anime otakus
In Kyoto, maikos don't get paid, get little allowances but they gain skills from the courses they take during their training
In Tokyo, maid cafe maids gets a salary, gain communication skills via talking to customers or doing stage performance. However they still need to pay for their own living expenses since it's just a job.
In Kyoto, if you are a famous Maiko or Geisha, you will get a rich danna to sponser you and might even buy you out. Most of the cash mostly goes to the Okiya
In Tokyo, if you are a popular and pretty Maid at a maid cafe, you will also get fans or anime otakus who buys a lot of your merchandises. Most of the profits will go to the maid in question and the maid cafe at most just draws a little from the merchandise sales.
Both are part of Japan original tradition since you'll only see Maikos in kyoto and maid cafes mainly in Japan.
So TLDR : if given a choice, i guess most teenage girls would rather work at Tokyo to be a famous maid at a maid cafe instead of choosing the dark practices at the Okiya unless you're going for the pride to call yourself a Geisha after you retired or just to mix into the rich society and hopefully to become a rich middle aged man's wife or mistress.

      @justtotestlearn4591 Před rokem +2

Mate, with all due respect that is a wildly inaccurate comparison. First of all, maid cafes are all over Japan, not limited to Tokyo by far. Even here in Kyoto you can find some and you have a boatload of them in e.g. Osaka.
Same goes for the geimaigi, they are not limited to Kyoto but can also be found in other cities like Nara, Tokyo and a few more.
There are so many tsukkomidokoro in the whole comparison. Just...no.
The premise is as faulty as the conclusion and I really mean no disrespect but it does not seem to me as if you had any in-depth knowledge of the matter.

Oh yeah, good thing Miley Cyrus was so prepared to have her career in THIS very protective, not lolita-complexed society at all. And millions of American kids took her as a ROLE MODEL. Japan enforces restriction to enfoce NUANCE, to take out the DAMAGING part. YOU call it euphemism, and AGGRAVATE the damaging part.
Try to have some basic consistency. "Maturity" is not the issue when ALREADY teens work in all kinds of fields, and that doesn't mean it's "mature work". It means that there is a place to develop your maturity BEFORE you're dropped into the deep end, and demanded to become adult overnight like in the American dystopia.
YOU demand children go through that so YOU don't have to think about, and then you have to nerve to joke about it like you're cheekily skirting a taboo? YOU'RE NOT TOUCHING your OWN taboo. Maiko being established and protected is what Japan offers INSTEAD of an iPhone with a camera and saying "here kid, knock yourself out, but DO NOT leave a money trail". 10 years of that and what do YOU have? All the girls grew up to have Onlyfans and avoiding taxes, lord knows what they did when income was NOT invovled, jsut abandonment into outside of soceity.

I’ve been in Japan 20 years…married to a local woman. We hired a geisha & Maiko to perform music at our wedding. No problem there! Great experience!
Have been to Kyoto many times…
Traditionally, these women were entertainers AND what we consider as High Price Escorts, in the west.
The modernized ‘Geisha’ we hired were just for show. But the ‘real’ traditional kind…were basically high-end escorts…if you paid enough, over time…you could ‘buy’ them! 💋

There are multiple things about the video which are rather inaccurate (although I agree that the labor law revision in order to better protect the maiko is overdue) and I would really really love a source for the claim that "only girls under 13 or women over 40 were allowed to be maiko" because I found no credible sources for that claim.
What irks me the most is that you did not bring up the topic of アイドル and especially 地下アイドル where the absolute overwhelming majority of the audience are men of all age ranges.
Btw 水揚げ is not the same for maiko and for oiran. Common misconception.
Also, 一見お断り is NOT limited to tea houses as quite a few restaurants have (or at least had until covid) the same rule in Kyoto.
For teahouses it is actually a logical condition, as
    1. you are required to become a member
    2. you having someone vouching for you is also an extra obligation for you to keep your payments timely and to behave as otherwise it reflects badly on the person who vouched for you
    3. most importantly THE ENERTAINMENT IS HIGHLY CUSTOMIZED TO YOU so they need to know you well enough (e.g. the topics you are interested in) to be able to provide adequate entertainment.
Last but not least, it is not for wealthy men only, not anymore, not by far. I personally know male members who are far from rich, but are still a member of a tea house in Pontocho.

Also if the history of geisha is taken into consideration it's always been changing....so if we get it change for the better it will help everyone! The ones who want it the same will eather lose in popularity or be pushed to the finge/or most traditional, (kinda like the Orion and tayuu)....even that had to change some to survive, look at ai tayuu! I hope this helps and hope the government and the kenban/okiya will see this and make better changes!

Single most historically inaccurate movie that you could have watched on the topic. It grossly misinterpreted the source material by Golden, which in turn was such a gross misinterpretation of the actual memoires of Iwasaki that it led to a lawsuit by her against him.
Yes, there is a certain degree of hypocrisy and Japan certainly likes "the grey zone" (see e.g. "soap lands" and certain "restaurants" in spots like the Tobita Shinchi etc.) and rather literal interpretation of the law like the 1958 anti prostitution law, but the movie spins a very false narrative for shock value.
If you are actually interested in the topic of geimaigi please do yourself a favor and grab a more legitimate source material than that abomination of a movie.

I lived in Japan for a while... I've been to Gion a few times and was lucky enough to visit a tea house.
On one hand I can't really condone the mistreatement and harassment of young girls, it's revolting.
On the other hand, Maiko are like moving art, they are wonderful women who work very hard to learn their skills and they are unique in the world, I really hope Maiko can exist in the future.
My humble opinion would be that some kind of ad hoc authority strictly monitors tea house activities to control that everything is done properly.

It’s something they aspire to be, hence the apprenticeship. A lifestyle they want to live.
We don’t really do many apprenticeships in the west. Maybe some in the construction trades, but that’s about it.
