When it comes to stealth technology though, USA generally takes the cake. Everything form the original stealth f-117 Nighthawk, to the upcoming b-21 raider - all have put the country on the map - or rather off it, when it comes to clandestine missions across the world.
That however, might be about to change as Russia gears up to start flight testing its new top secret bomber project. Now fair warning before we get into it, it can be a little bit hard to discern between fact and ambitious propoganda - so until this plane is cruising in the skies, its specifications might be rather 'up in the clouds' so to speak.
PAK DA itself stands for Perspective Aviation Complex for Long-Range Aviation.
And long range it will be! With a 12,000 km operational range, it will have the ability to fly from moscow to any city in North America, Rio in Brazil and even Darwin in Australia - G'day mate!
It doesn't have to worry about refueling, as it can fly its four crew members subsonically for up to 30 hours to circle targets or to be hidden deep in the clouds until needed.
These engines are so powerful, that they can work in minus 60°C to plus 50°C and survive even effects of nuclear explosion!
With its 30 ton weapon capacity, it will be able to carry everything from conventional bombs, nuclear missiles and in the future - hypersonic weapons.
To understand where we are now, we have to go back to where it all began.
    The Tupolev Tu-160.
The supersonic strategic bomber had been a stable of the russian airforce for decades, ever since it first rolled out in 1981. However, for those viewers who might not have been born in 1981 - this is a long time ago.
Warfare has changed since and new strategic bombers are more often doing the role of cruise missile carrier rather than regular bombing missions with guided or unguided bombs. Russians know this and saw how US used their bombers in the recent conflicts, and started learning from their experiences.
Main idea was to create a new bomber that will be able to match or surpass all the current characteristics of the Tu-160
with the exception of the supersonic speed which is sacrificed for stealth and maximum load capacity.
A number of Tu-160s were lost during the dissolution of the USSR, with them being stationed in Ukraine at the time,
and the Russian bomber fleet has been lacking in that segment, which led to both the need for the PAK-DA and for a modernization and renewal of the Tu-160 production line. But more on that in a bit.
In 2013, the develop was confirmed to have a subsonic flying wrong design, with emphasis on stealth technology over speed.
Kuznetsov design bureau was awarded with the contract to develop the new engines named NK-65, based on the NK-32 engines currently used by Tu-160.
By 2019, a prototype has been in the development and the Kazan aviation plant, and it’s expected to have ground testing some time in 2022 with possible first flight in 2023 or 24.
But let’s dig a bit deeper in what actually is the combat purpose and future of this aircraft, and is Russian so called Messenger, actually sending a very important message?
For the first time in their operational history, Russian bombers have had an opportunity to perform in combat. During 2015 and 2016, Tu-95, Tu-22M and Tu-160 have flown multiple missions to Syria in various roles.
Tu-160s performed attacks with new Kh-101 cruise missiles, while Tu-22Ms and Tu-95s performed sorties with both cruise missiles and bombs, testing out the new SVP-24 Hephaestus targeting system, which basically turns dumb bombs into at least semi - guided munition, similar to US JDAM, but still lacking in precision.
So what does all of this mean for PAK-DA?
First of all, focus will be on missiles as main weaponry. Hypersonic missiles like King-zhal and new Kh-92 will be featured for sure, along with the stealthy Kh-101 and 102 cruise missiles.
This all leads to the idea of Russia actually creating a capable preemptive strike aircraft which can hit anywhere in the world. With US and Russian relations getting worse in recent years, especially over Ukraine, this might be a clear sign that Russia wants to be in the same position as the US with first strike capabilities and use this to either further escalate or deescalate current situation.

So Russia implemented different approach making planes with stealthiness being not a key future, but a way to reduce radar signature as much as possible without harming too much other parameters, which cant be said about F-117, F-35 and B-2. The exception here is S-70, but its a drone, so different story.
About PAK-DA there is so few information, than its not even worth to speculate for now. It can continue in such a state for next 20 years. while Russia producing TU-160M2, or its work could be rushed in recent years following completely different design than shown in video.

Dale Brown's 'Night of the Hawk' also features a stealth bomber, a Belarussian one, built in Lithuania with the help of a brainwashed 'Old Dog' crew member, Dave Luger. One of his best.
The books Dale Brown published before 2000 were all pretty solid in plausible near-future tech, the plots and the writing were (still) quite good. His dialogues were never masterpieces, but sufficient in techno-thrillers.
After 'Battle Born', imo, the quality crashed from just a 'still enjoyable' into 'annoyingly cringeworthy recycled waste of time'.
To his defense, Brown recycled mainly his own original plot ideas. And it is hard to connect a futuristic strategic strike force to a post 9/11 real-world, dominated by headlines about the war on terror and on low-tech insurgents, in which air strikes usually aren't solving the big problems. Which is the Dale Brown trope: problems caused by bad guys to US, difficult high tech air strike solves the problems (despite US leadership having forbidden the strike).
Also, a noticeable read is his 'Storming Heaven' from 1994, in which a terrorist mastermind has passenger planes crashing into airports, threatening to do the same to industrial, military and political objects. It also contains, quite prophetically, the inception of something like Homeland Security. In Brown's fiction that solved the terrorist problem. In the real-world however, it was just part of a new chapter in the conflict.

Russia's strategy does not presuppose a preemptive strike or an attack on Nuclear states. In this regard, we do not need stealth very much. Of course, it is good if the plane is visible from a shorter distance, but in general it is not critical. There is no real stealth aircraft in our world. It all depends on the radar and the range. But what we really need is that the aircraft in full combat load could fly 11 time zones without refueling. At the same time, it should have a good speed (more than that of the tu160) and load capacity, as well as a mode of operation from -50 to +50. In addition, our strategists assume that such an aircraft will be used on duty, which means that in addition to high speed, it should also have a very economical speed that keeps it in the air as long as possible. So, I am sure, the New bomber will not have Stealth but low visibility for radars, but it will have a wide range of speeds and perhaps the high-altitude ceiling will be space (60+ km). I think so

Great comment, Яков Фоминых, most civilians don't realize that different countries have different requirements based on many different factors, including, but not limited to, their geography, their strategy, their environment, and their production ability. They think if aircraft A doesn't have similar performance characteristics to aircraft B, then the country that produced aircraft A got it wrong. This isn't true, they just had a different set of requirements.

"Russia's strategy does not presuppose a preemptive strike or an attack on Nuclear state" this has dated and looks quite ridiculous. Russia liberally threatens nuclear war even against small states as small as Estonia as part of its oppressive and arrogant 'zone of influence' imperialism policies. All of Russia's attacks have begun Treacherously whether it was using the Naval Base at Sevastopol that Ukraine had leased to Russia or the Febuary 24th 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
-Russia's policies have always involved denial and sneak attacks. Stealth is just a technology Russia hasn't mastered yet.
-Being able to fly 11 time zones at speed is not important. 11 times zones is enough in reality such a large bomber wouldn't fly missions from the border. It would get destroyed by missiles if within 1 time zone of a border.

The range maps you're showing are just a bit misleading because the earth is laid out flat... instead of like a sphere, as it normally would be.
If the russians were to ever launch an attack on the US, they would probably fly over the north pole and through Canada, which is a much shorter route distance wise, and is probably the reason why the engines are rated to go in such cold temperatures. This has been the case since roughly the 1950's when ICBM's became a thing, where both countries realized the shortest route was over the north pole, not to fly over europe and across the atlantic ocean.
Would be great if you could take more time to consider that in future videos.

Equally importantly bombers don't take off from Red Square, they could take off anywhere within Russian Borders, so the effective range is 12,000 km from the russian border. 9,000 km from Sochi to Cape town, 10,000 km from Vladisvostok to New Zealand. 12,000 km from Western Russia to Argentina. Basically everywhere in the world except the southern 1/3 of South America and Antarctica. Also,...12,000km one way nuclear strike vs 6,000km return flight ? Mid air refueling ? A note on stealth. Stealth is not a binary on or off thing. You can have certain unhealthy features in an aircraft for various of reasons, but overall the plane can be designed for stealth in mind. So while I agree that the exposed engine nozzle like that makes a plane generally less stealthy, it is not a like this sort of compromise is unheard of. The F-35 and The SU-57 both have more exposed nozzle. Yet both are clearly made for stealth. But both have made more compromises to their stealth than the F-22 in comparison.
There are more elements one could argue would make the plane less stealthy to as show in the video. You likely get better stealth by having the engine inlets on top. Having a smoother profile wing would likely help to. Not having winglets would help a tiny bit. But they're pretty angled and this mitigates it. But it is still the case that no winglets would make it more stealthy. But it is all down to compromises. No winglets mean slightly less stable flight and less efficient. Meaning you likely get less range. And stability is greatly effected, then the ailerons have to work more, and then you need to take even more care to make sure they do not show up on radar and so on.
Note, this is only base on what these general features tend to do. And if you really want to know how a plane will preform, you need to model it. Preferably a full flying prototype. But at least make a proper computer model (And in the past they did this all on paper by hand.) Clever design can sometime turn what looks to be a con in to a pro even reversing effects. I note these things more to make it clear to people that it is not one element of a plane that makes it stealthy or non-stealthy. It is the whole package and it a matter of degrees of stealth. And some elements that are very important you can not even see based on the shape of the plane. Like what paint it used or what material internal components are made off. And these aspects can sometimes matter more than the external look of the plane.
EDIT: Just trying to correct some spelling and sentence structure. Got Dyslexia.

    • @lmlmd2714
      @lmlmd2714 Před 2 lety +2

Agree, this is often not understood. Essentially "stealthiness" is part of a triangular trade off between stealth, speed/manuverability and payload - though in this case, I suspect the exposed engine component is more to do with development time. The engines are a not a clean sheet design that could optimised for stealth from the ground up. Russian design beureaus have been suffering from a brain drain for years, as older engineers retire and there has been a lack of new intake getting a chance to benefit from knowledge and skills transfer. This has made development of clean sheet designs incredibly protracted and dogged by problems. Building a clean sheet aircraft *and* a clean sheet engine is begging for development hell, so they fell back on the same technique as the SU-57... build a new aircraft with stealth characteristics around an existing engine, with the expectation that it can be re-engined later should a better unit become available. Indeed, the PAK-DA and SU-57 are probably waiting on the same engine family.

    • @Cythil
      @Cythil Před 2 lety

@@lmlmd2714 There also benefits for having them on the bottom. Makes servicing the engines easier. It is all about trade-offs.
Of course, we do not know if the plane will have them at the bottom. That is just speculation. And you can with clever design have they have less impact too. After all, there are more than a few stealth crafts that do have their intakes at the bottom or sides rather than on top where they're more shielded from ground radar.
Of course, I just mention it to illustrate the nature of trade-offs. But It seems we all are in agreement when it comes to that. Which makes me very happy since I have seen a lot of armchair designers say this or that is not stealthy because some single feature that is not ideal when it really is about the whole package. Often with a heavy doze of nationalist pride, trying to claim their country possess the only true stealth craft.

Us 'Mericans say "eff one seventeen" for the F-117. When saying the numeric designation, we never say the number as a number. It's either "one seventeen" or sometimes "one one seven". I don't know why this is, but it's consistent across all fighters, bombers, and other aircraft.
EDIT: Also, when saying the designations of Soviet (and now Russian) aircraft, MiG is "mig", SU is "ess you", TU is "tee you", Yak is "yack", etc. I think that we tend to say the acronym as a word if it's more than two letters long. And yes, I'm probably getting pedantic, but I'm over 40 so I need to practice more for when I'm older.

I'm from Serbia, btw and we say "SU like "su" , and everything like that, actually, when I was a kid, one morning, knowing that how much I love planes, dad took me for an one hour drive to see the downed eF one seventeen and I took tore a piece of it.. it's coating is kinda like 0.5 cm of some hard rubber (I mean, that's what it feels like..) Btw, don't think that we all hate 'Mericans.. got a lot of friends from the US who stumbled upon this city and somehow, they stayed, fell in love, got jobs and stuff.. can't leave now cos' they love it .. friends etc... Some of the guys from places like LA say that it's cos it's the most chill place in the world and after hearing what's happening on the streets there, all the crime and shit.. damn .. First serial models on state tests now. Before to launch full scale serial production.
Do you think it is long process? Okey. Let’s remember.
First prototype of T-80 arrived in 1969, serial production launched in 1976 - 7 years later. But T-80 even not created from scratch and it was not so complicated.
Another example, Germany and France several years agp promised to create own similar to T-14 tank and it will arrive in… 2035. They create it together because it is too complicated for each country alone.
New tank, from scratch, first in own generation - it is not so fast as you can think. Russia built first prototype in 2015. In 2021 tank passed all state tests and accepted to army. In 2022 factory produced first tanks with serial technology. Now they again pass tests to confirm capabilities of factory and then serial production. So?
And what about three new Russian class of nuclear strategic submarines, new ICBMs and SLBMs from scratch, S-400, S-500, Su-35 and Su-57, and so on, a lot of other weapons?)
