The little voices inside Riley’s head know her inside and out-but next summer, everything changes when Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” introduces a new Emotion: Anxiety. According to director Kelsey Mann, the new character promises to stir things up within headquarters. “Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat,” said Mann. “That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds.” A trailer, poster and film stills are now available for what promises to be the feel-good (or feel-everything) film of Summer 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust. It does suck, but they gave pretty good reasons as to why she was removed. If it made for a better film, then I’m not complaining

The grey emotion is confirmed to be Shame, but she was later scrapped for narrative, thematic and scientific reasons. Psychologists working on the film state that it's not a real emotion, it's a negative belief and mood about one's self, along side a barrage of negative emotions going inward instead of outward, it's more complex than just a simple emotion
Narratively and thematically speaking, the theme of the story revolves around the idea of shame and wanting to fit in, and having a character that embodies that theme entirely felt too on the nose and preachy, so she was scrapped for the sake of subtly, but also due to the fact that she was a very unpleasant character to write
Another factor that came into play with her being cut is Shame and Embarrassment in most languages often mean the same thing, so having 2 characters that are basically the same for most foreigners would be very confusing

@@abdullahnaqi3936 Embarrassment (and Guilt to an extent) are adaptive social emotions that make you feel bad about your actions, where as Shame, is a maladaptive belief/mood state that makes you feel bad about who u are as a person

For those curious, that emotion is Shame. She was scrapped from the original project for not having a sense of love for Riley, only wanting to see her crumble instead. For those curious how I know this, check the Inside Out 2 Artbook.

I'm not sure if it will come out, but I think Riley will be around 16-18 in Inside Out 3 Love emotion has joined.
I know that love can start at a young age, but this movie is examined in great detail, they must know something.

Spoiler Alert:
I knew there was an emotion missing. The announcement teaser for Inside Out 2 mentioned the word "Depressed" as a separate color from Sadness, so obviously Depression being the "secret emotion" would be a pretty neat reveal in the film.
The first scene was really just stealing grampa’s spotlight.
