    Great explanation but your explanation about battery capacity is off. Capacity is rated in either Wh (watt hours) or Ah (amp hours). So a Tesla P75 has 75kWh of capacity. That means you can use 75,000 watts of power in an hour, or 37,250 watts in 2 hours, etc etc. This also translates to how efficiently you drive. Also a battery can deliver as much current as the load demands. True a lithium cell can deliver 30A but it could also deliver 100A, but will over heat and most like get damaged. So the battery pack in a Tesla will have a BMS or battery management system, to monitor and regulate the amount of current that can be delivered with respect to demand (how hard you stamp your right foot!) and the health of each string of cells in the pack.

    • @Superbouncybubble
      @Superbouncybubble Před 4 lety +5

      For anyone interested, a battery's maximum current output can be described by a battery's internal resistance. This is shown by ohms law: Voltage = Amps X Resistance. That's why a short circuited AA battery (high internal resistance) doesn't spark but a shorted car battery (quite low internal resistance) will throw sparks.

      The AMPs he told there are the Peak Amps of the battery (usually 60Aor 90A for cars with little electronics) it is how much load it can handle for a very small period of time without toasting. The charge is Ampere Hours

    • @KirtFitzpatrick
      @KirtFitzpatrick Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah he had a strange explanation of a Tesla's power. 400V is the peak output. A little googling suggests 90 kW is the peak power utilization of D spec models. So 90,000 W / 400 V = 225 amps. Not sure where or how he got the 1500 amp number.

      Bottom text they quoted a 0-60 of 4.5 seconds for the model s (as if there is one version) and an amp output of 1500amps. 1500amps is the max output of the p100d which do a 0-60 of 2.28 seconds. There's more to that statement than people realize.
      The way that living things breathe and produce energy is remarkably similar to how a battery works when you get all the way down to the actual chemistry. It's just electrons jumping from one place to another. Your muscles contract because a release of calcium ions triggers a complex cascade of chemical reactions that makes some molecules bind to other molecules in sequence and "pull".

      Brian KongNam that may be true but are you actually comparing actual numbers or just words. Saying electric cars still cause pollution is fine but it produces 70 or 60% of the pollution gas cars do so it is still an improvement. AND electricity sources will soon be fully renewable so by that time it will cause 10 or 20% of the pollution of gas cars.

      FlyingSamosa52 i am not saying the period where it is born or it is running. I mean the when the car dies and the batteries can pollute a lot. Maybe makes the whole number of the carbon print increases and even bigger than tradition cars... it is just a guess since no solid pollution value of lithium batteries can be found now. It is just my guess

    Great video ! However, amps by itself says nothing about capacity. Amps, like you say, is electrical current, if you want to know the capacity of a battery, you need to know for how long the battery is able to provide that current. Usually battery capacity is measured in Amp hours, or like Tesla, Watt Hours.
    Fx if you buy a regular lead acid battery for your car, it might say something like 80 Ah, which in theory means that the battery is able to provide 80 amps for 1 hour.

    Awesome video, I have a suggestion that could be the continuation of this video. You guys could teach the difference between kW and kWh relating to electric cars (Formula E for example). Being that kW is the power that the car has that could also be converted to hp because it is a power unit and kWh being the amount of energy that the battery can provide relating for example to a fuel tank of a combustion car to be easy to understand. Thanks

      Should be doable with some tweaking. AFAIK it's more or less what Koenigseggseggsegg is doing with their latest model. If you want to do it yourself, I think the easiest way would be to split the axles, and have the engine power just the front wheels and the motor just the rear wheels or something along those lines. It would be one hell of a hybrid if anyone managed it, though.

      Little complex. Some people argue that its just a scam to encourage people to buy a brand new more expensive car with the risk of not getting your return in savings. Some just don't like Electric cars. I don't think saving the environment is actually a main selling point if you're feeding a family. Some people don't wanna wait for the car to charge and gas can be easily put back in. But external fuel cells could easily add a charge to your car if you're in a hurry. Tech will win out in the end (if it costs cheap enough).

    • @siaowun9418
      @siaowun9418 Před 5 lety

      @Angus Chandler Depends. If you factor in the carbon you take from the electricity grid. You only reduce emission by 20%-30%. However investing in one large more efficient power plant is probably better in the long term than building a brand new engine, maintaining all the moving parts, and refilling/transporting gasoline. So yeah EV is better. Technically. The only barrier is the financial aspect and how long it takes to get a return in savings which could take some years. Some dudes want a new car every 5 years. So they'd save nothing.

      Mahmood Y.H LOL giant rant based on Wrong Assumptions. Not all BEVs are Autonomous Cars. You can build Autonomous cars out of Gasoline cars also like Audi & Nvidia. You have no clue what you are talking about.
      Rimac & Renault have built Racing BEVs with Hydraulic Steering & Unassisted Brakes like the Tajima Monster Pikes Peak Racer & Zoe E-Sport. Just because it is BEV does not mean you remove the handling feel.
      The only problem with Clutch Pedal Manual is that no mass produced transmission exist that can survive the massive Impulse Torque of Modern BEVs. Once we have a strong simple transmission like a 4 Speed that can easily survive instant 1000 lb/ft than BEVs can be Manual again.
      Before spouting stupid hypotheticals at least research if any of it is based in reality.

      Electric cars don't wear out after 150K miles like typical road-cars do, and fracking for oil causes more problems than we can solve, whereas electric power is becoming ever more green. There's still the issue of battery materials, but the beauty of electrics is that they don't have 8 steel pistons rubbing against cast-iron cylinders before running through a couple thousand gears to get to the wheels causing wear.

    • @Tactisloth
      @Tactisloth Před 6 lety

      Dillon Orr modern engines easily last over 250k miles if taken care of. They also don't cost twice my yearly wage.
      And no, look at an oil Derrick and then check out a lithium mine. If you're u can't see the lithium mine causes more damage, you're not capable of critical thinking.

    • @Antiganos
      @Antiganos Před 6 lety +1

      The problem is that while modern engines may be fortunate enough to last 300K, electrics will, by nature, always outlast an ICE. They make up for their initial cost in the future.
      Not all electrics are crazy expensive, and they are becoming massively cheaper very quickly. Cars used to be a thing only the wealthy could afford, now most people have several. Give it time.
      I stated in my comment that lithium mines are a problem, they suck big time. But as a resident of Texas that has seen over 2,000 oil rigs go into place in what used to be completely untouched land, I'd much rather deal with lithium BS. Between where I live and the nearest town (25 miles away) there have been 250 rigs put up in 2.5 months, I'll elaborate. Oil rigs produce major carbon and methane emissions, absolutely destroy agriculture, and waste huge amounts of steel and crude oil/other natural resources (more than lithium). In addition, the logistics of oil-field work as an industry is also a wreck, we went from having 3 fatal car accidents a year in our 5-county area to over 300 within 6 months of the first rig. Local farmers and ranchers have no water supply, the roads are massively damaged without the possibility of repair (and temporary fixes are extremely damaging to the economy, millions of dollars per mile kind of damaging). Lithium is awful, but gasoline is worse. I'm all for finding a better solution here, but the petroleum industry is far worse than the few mines needed until we find new options for batteries. Maybe ethanol would be a solution, who knows, but gasoline is not worth the environment, the infrastructure, or the lives needed to support it. Lithium is the lesser of two evils, so for now, electric vehicles are the way to go.
      Edited for grammar*

    • @Snail_With_a_Shotgun
      @Snail_With_a_Shotgun Před 6 lety

      No, just a couple of thousands of miles/km should do it. Definitely less than 100K, probably significantly so. But that largely depends on where you live.
      Lithium mines are actually very clean, as lithium is 'mined' by letting water evaporate from lithium brine. It's like letting your clothes dry in the sun.

    "In a battery cell, amps measure capacity."
    I'm sorry, but in the words of the illustrious D. von Trump, "wrong". Amps measure the rate of flow through a conductor, more or less how many electrons go through a wire section in a given amount of time, usually 1 second. Capacity is measured in Ah (amp-hour). A car battery with a capacity of 80 Ah can deliver 80 A of current for 1 hour, before it's discharged, or 40 A for 2 hours, or 10 A for 8 hours. If it delivers 80 A in 1 second before it needs recharging, that's not a very useful battery.
