I Remastered Avatar: The Last Airbender

- Avatar: The Last Airbender is my favorite show that I love to come back to time and time again. However, I feel the aspect ratio leaves a lot to be desired. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and try to remaster a handful of scenes from the pilot episode of this magnificent show.
Hope you enjoy! - Zábava
This makes me realize that 'remastering' 4:3 animation could be a great exercise for beginner animators. It works as a study, as you're constantly referencing the existing animation, and you can focus on practicing animating motion itself without needing to create entire scenes from scratch.
as a serious artist myself, i can seriously not recommend this enough. copying a style and expanding upon it is without a doubt the fastest way for an artist to learn, and is how I was taught every medium i work in
Here's to hoping some professor out there gets his students to remaster scenes from season 1, maybe after a few years we can get an HD rerelease xD
I'm sure before the end of the year AI will be able to do it
@@SONYUSR that would actually be an awesome idea to have students extend/improve different scenes for a weekly/monthly project. and compile them over the entirety of the course and play the scenes that all the students did at the end of the course.
@@mauriciosolano9342 so? It's still a good practice for artists

I applaud you for not going straight to AI
I THOUGHT THAT AS WELL!!
so glad he went the extra mile to add his own flare and not ruin the borders with inconsistent AI slop :]
(To clarify, i don't think AI is yet able to properly expand the aspect ratio of cartoon shows without it looking out of place, and considering the characters have a lot of frames that have a portion of their body/accessories/items out of shot, plus the animated spots here and there, the AI would have to know how to animate them, it wouldn't work that well without the assistance of an animator or artist.)
Yeah god forbid people use tools
I mean, its great he did it himself and enjoyed it and he did a great job, but this is pretty much EXACTLY what AI should be used for.
@@Keblash AI shouldn't be used at all in my opinion
@@SoloJona That is exactly what people used to think about computers.
As someone who understands animation; seeing you so excited to animate *WATER* had me already KNOWING the pain you were in for, animating any form of waves/water is such a task and making it look good is INSUFFERABLE.
Manual remaster, why? Just use AI upscaling.
@@ncard00 Ew. You and your comment like can take that terrible take elsewhere.
The comment I was looking for
@@ncard00you don’t even know what “upscaling” means. Upscaling the original would have no affect on the aspect ratio
@@ARandomEliatrope You and your manners can get out of this comment section, stop hating on other peoples subjective opinions.
“Even if it’s not perfect…” dude you did BY YOURSELF the work of A TEAM of animators, I think you should be pretty proud of yourself!!! Great job!!!
And the issues you were mentioning with the software you used, like drawing a straight line, I'm sure you didn't send that feedback to the developers, and just complained about it in this CZcams video, like everybody else does, complain online or to the people they know, the very people who can't do anything about those issues, stupid.
Makes me think that with a group project this would actually be possible. I'm no Photoshop expert but I could make a few backgrounds--others could too. The problem would be when human limbs have to get added because that does require some expertise and ability to match... also I'd say reframing (you don't just want to add the same exact size left and right for every scene when some scenes would be better reframed slightly offcenter instead).
Between a dedicated fanbase it could get done. But I'd say they should clean up the first season while they're at it because that upscale is ROUGH.
i misread this title to be “I REMEMBER* avatar” and expected someone vaguely trying to recall the plot but getting totally sidetracked. honestly would be hilarious
Haha that would be an amazing video idea
same though
Whether you want to use the title or not, you are so clearly an artist! You had an idea, and instead of waiting for someone else to do it, you went ahead and did it yourself! Doesn’t matter if you can draw or not, you have passion. And that is what makes Art special!
The fact that he draws at all makes him an artist 😂
What is remaster
fr that's what makes an artist
This is such condescending bullshit. This is meant to be a widescreen remaster. It literally doesn't matter if you have "passion" or if it's "art." The art is already done, it's the original show. What matters is whether the result is an acceptable widescreen remaster. If an AI could do it, it would be just as valuable as a widescreen remaster. We're here for results, not metaphysical spiritual bullshit.
@@rockoman100 take a chill pill dude
holy crap, this was insane. Were all seamlessly done. If I wasn't paying attention I thought it was just the normal scenes from Avatar. Also, you are one crazy guy, the amount of love you got for Avatar to go such lengths. Do I hear a remastering of One Piece from the Chunny!?
Thanks! Hopefully the one piece remake comes out sooner than later
I think the 4:3 is def part of the charm for me, it's reflective of the time period it came out in. I also feel like ATLA is very good at visual storytelling and utilized its framing and composition very purposefully. The idea of what aspect ratio a video "should" be is silly cuz it's all made up! I have no problem with it, but great vid!!!!
It’s also perfect size for my screen which has the same ratio😎
I would remaster only the lineart and some weird faces that sometimes come along
yeah and extending the screen would just lead to wasted space since the scenes were made with 4:3 in mind. Still great animation and drawings in this vid
I think 4:3 looks great if you still have a screen that fits the image, but otherwise I find it very annoying until I tune it out. Now days I keep a CRT hooked up for when I’m watching or play old content.
@@whitegemgames Don't necessarily need a CRT (though they're great for old video games), Ipads are 4:3 and ATLA looks great on one
10:18 "eventhough it is not perfect ....". no man, it is perfect.
the issue i have with this is that the framing of scenes was made for the old aspect ratio. Characters where originally positioned at 2/3 but they are now not at the same position. The only exception is when they are right in the middle. You could however account for that by making sure that you position the focus object where it would be.
Was litterally about to say the same thing
He fixed this in his new video :). Made sure to focus on where he added the extra background to keep the original point in focus
As a film student I can't imagine Avatar in any other aspect ratio. The 4:3 creates a certain nostalgic tone that makes the show so much more lovable for me.
That makes sense. Like how some film students act like black and white films are artistic and special when the only reason their black and white is because that was the only technology the directors had at the time
The REAL reason why they put BnW films on a pedestal is because of nostalgia
@@DarkDoughnutsVids But that's exactly it. The fact that black and white was a technological limitation is exactly why it is now an artistic choice. The Wizard of Oz is a perfect example. They used the transition between black and white and color photography to convey a "new universe" feeling. Now black and white is used to convey a certain nostalgic mood or a sense of film noir. When used correctly it's exactly like how an animated movie like Toy Story 4 will intentionally put in lens defects. We're playing with the language of cinema.
Editor here. It's all taste. I'm ready for the 4k 48fps 2:1 aspect ratio remaster.
@@DarkDoughnutsVids The point is while these were limitations filmmakers made their films with these in mind, and now you can't simply add color / frame space and call it a day. Like you would not just extend the Mona Lisa portrait to 16:9 and call it better just because it's a more modern format. It is a nice exercise though, as shown in this video
As a human I’m ready for the remaster
bro "simply likes to draw" and owns an apple pencil and likes to call himself "not an artist" ok buddy. accept your artistic nature
At the same time, he figure out key frames during this project
"I'm not an artist."
"I like to draw."
My dude, you are an artist. It's doesn't have to mean you're doing it as a career or anything, but if you MAKE art, you are an artist! It's that easy! 😄
Also, these look so good! Really shows how aspect ratio can really change the tone of the shots. I would absolutely love if they did this officially. maybe in another 20 years, who knows 😭
Came here to comment this sentiment

"You're a mad genius"🔥
I love projects like this, taking something you love (so you don't get too bored) and simply making "improvements" or simple changes as a way of practicing and learning.
Haha.
I wish that rather than spend 150millions on the live action, they would put half as much on a remaster of atla or a rewrite of korra.
With talents and love for the original such as yours, it would be glorious.
SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE KORRA ANOTHER CHANCE 😭😭
@@DishonorableMentions452 wdym?
@@turtlogra9709Theyre referring to how Korra’s show was messed with by the network (Nickelodeon,) who were inconsistent with how much creative freedom, time, and certainty the showrunners would have. When Mike and Bryan said they wanted the protagonist to be a girl, Nick got real obtuse and suddenly had less faith in the show (as if Atla was successful for being a “boy show.”🙄 ) Instead of giving the crew a guaranteed three seasons of 20 episodes, they promised them a single, short season, and said the show could continue if it was successful. This is why it had such a forced happy ending- they didn’t know if they’d be able to continue. Same for why Korra’s character arc feels kinda reset in season 2.
Nick did stuff like this throughout the show’s production. If the showrunners were able to make it without these problems, it wouldn’t have as many writing problems.
BOTH do both i really want to see what korra would have looked like with 26 eps a season.... i REALLY wanted more of Eska yes eska i see SOOO much in her that i made my own character based off her for my own comic lol also yes full res no borders and a new 2024 anime style COME ON WHY HAVE WE NOT GOT THAT AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
rewrite korra LMAOO💀
I honestly feel like despite any "oddities" My eyes wouldn't be over in those spots and Id want to watch it widescreen just to have my screen filled. This was really cool to see.
The build-up of icebergs got me hyped for the moment they had to work on the CLASSIC iceberg scene.
Thats all I ever wanted. A simple 4k remaster. Dont change anything else. Just give us a better visual quality.
I wish netflix had just given you the money to do this with the entire animated show instead of spending it on the life action. This was so great to look at, especially knowing you've never tried animation before. Great work!!
Nickelodeon has had a chokehold on ATLA for all this time and continually made idiotic decisions about it. They were surprised when it first came out and was a massive hit, and they were surprised again when releasing it on Netflix made it a world wide hit. They have never really understood the show.
why not both? I loved the live action lol
@@GurdurrSheWrote That's great, I'm glad there are people who enjoyed it! Unfortunately I really didn't and think it's not nearly as great as the original one.
@@naturallyamused yeah heard that too. it's really sad that they don't seem to understand their audience...
@@johannaflowers_ thats fine, im glad theres more people like me - never seen a show approved for two seasons at once before
I love how humble you are when you said "I'm not an artist", while you literally put immense amount of time and effort to remaster these scenes. Kudos to your inspiring work, man. Awesome! ❤
This is really well done!
It intrigues me that despite matching almost perfectly, it still feels like it was supposed to be 4:3 due to the posing and placing of characters and objects. It's truly a testament to the original show that they managed to place everything so purposefully in what now feels like a limiting aspect ratio.
This is so ambitious and I commend you so much for giving this a shot!
I can just feel the pain from the process of all that haha, but the results of those few scenes look awesome!
I really like 4:3 more at this moment of my life than 16:9, i really like how much of the image you can capture, of course, when they are using the whole frame, not when they have a 16:9 and they p&s the damn thing
Now I need a ATLA remaster too!!!
This was too good
I could never LOL the only waves I could create would be my tears trying to do this 😂
"I am not an artist" I mean, if you weren't before, you sure as heck are now! Excellent job!! It looks phenomenal. Knowing how hard animation is and seeing your process, this is excellent!!
Great work dude.
Big props to south park's studio for being on top of this and literally have completed this process for every scene in their show.
Watching this, I anticipated your views and subs to be in the hundreds of thousands??? Great work! Just hope the algorithm treats you well.
Wow, thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
I wasn't expecting it to change the feeling so much, but especially on the zoomed out shots, everything feels so vast. I love it
I’ve been dreaming about this for a long long time! I would pay for all 3 books to be in 16:9 in 4K 👌
You (as most artists do) talk down on yourself so much but you did SO WELL! This was so fun to watch
Damn this is hella impressive, the fact that you said you werent an artist but then made these icebergs so perfectly and the waves. Yeah theres slight differences but you cant really notice that when you watch it. and the fact that you did all this on an IPAD!?!?! wth thats insane. this video makes me wish I could watch all of ATLA like this
Ok wow I practically can't tell the difference it looks like that's the show always was. You should do more and put scenes out there.
Anyone who draws regardless of skill is an artist
Honestly this is pretty good honestly
Damn, the higher aspect ratio really does make it look significantly more modern
Wow, this is insanely well done! Dragon Ball Z / Funimation could learn a thing or two from this..
i loved this it looks great since changing the aspect ratio would change the feel of the scene if professionals were to actually remaster avatar i think they would change the composition of the framing to make shots more impactful like in the shot when katara and sokka are looking at the ice in shock a close up on their faces would make so much sense.
Agreed. I think that, to deal with this, whoever remaster the series should consider to better opt for an aspect ratio between 16:9 and 4:3, such as 3:2 or 16:10
Dude I never thought of how much of a difference a wider screen makes. This is great
bruh...this is insane we need more from chunnykay 👏🏻 I prob cant even do this in my dreams😵💫
This reminds me of when Billiam pointed out that if you watch some of Disney's early to mid 2000s shows which were in widescreen, you could crop it into 4:3 and not lose any important information.
That’s so impressive! You definitely are an artist, don’t sell yourself short!
I'm an art major, and have been an artist my whole life, I gotta say you killed it! You said in the beginning that you weren't an artist, but you definitely have the eye for it! Can't wait to see more of your work
This is amazing! I love when someone can look at something they love and even with little experience, try hard and create something pretty awesome. I loved how you mentioned drawing icebergs was like playing through a level to reach the final boss, that’s such a cool way of thinking about learning new things! The final product turned out amazing, hope you get more recognition and keep up the great work!
Thank you so much!!
This is absolutely incredible dude. I would love to see a remaster version of this gem of a show in widescreen. Hopefully Nickelodeon will hire you if this ever happens
First time animating and you did detailed WATER splashes. Bravo.
This is beautiful work, you should absolutely be proud of yourself. I hope you continue to do more stuff like this, I'm glad my YT homepage recommended this to me. I just finished rewatching TLA and wishing it had an HD version with better aspect ratios, this was so satisfying to find. One of the easiest subs I've done.
This is actually so cool to see
oh my god, this is amazing! i hope you're enjoying your project so far, can't wait to check the other videos and see more of it. thanks youtube for recommending this, you're an incredible artist and i appreciate your dedication to this project 💖💖
dude, you did an amazing job. i never woulda guessed this was your first time animating. you definitely have the patience an animator needs as well, lol
really blissful to watch the widening happening. great work!!! the waves looked really good
Though I do think the 4:3 is a part of the charm, and the cinematography was based off that aspect ratio, I’ve always wondered how it would look 16:9. You answered that! (I was also so afraid that this would be AI and I’m so glad it’s not 👏🏽). Well done.
Wtf man this is the work of an entire team!! You’re a master!
I’ve been wanting this for awhile now and you did a great job showing the concept. Didn’t look bad at all! I believe they’re working on recording the soundtrack with a live orchestra which would also go great with a remastered version of the show.
Awesome video and great work. I have watched this series some many times, I have lost count. I think it is so well-crafted and executed. I wish they would release a remastered version of this. Keep up the good work!
very hard to make this good, but you did a great job. but i think its impossible to make this 100 % bc it changes the conposition which is intended for 4:3
This is so good! I can’t believe how underrated you are
this is SO cool and you did such a good job for someone that doesn't have much experience, gives me so much hope that someday a full remaster will be available
I honestly expected this to be another generative AI video, but this was way more entertaining! I'm so impressed, it looks amazing
Fun Fact - On the episode - "The Swamp" - as Tho was singing his song, after capturing Appa, if you look closely at his arm hitting the side of the boat, it suddenly disappears right before the Gaang attacked.
Broooooooo this is awesome!!! I can’t believe you did this! It’s incredible!
You have the chance to turn this into an entire series! This looks amazing and I can't wait for more!
The urge I have to demand Avatar Studios a remastered ATLA like thisssssss
If you draw, then you're making art. And if you're making art, then you're an artist
Holy cow, so much work. Good job, man! Looks like a professional job to me.
Okay now let’s crowdsource this into the full series please :)
Incredible work and video, thank you for sharing, I hope more ppl check this vid out!!!! Although I'd love a remastered ATLA to 16:9, the og will remain a masterpiece forever regardless of the aspect ratio 🥹
Very true! 16:9 or not the show is still a masterpiece
It's definitely doable, plus since the cropped part isnt the focus, you can get away with a poorer quality, and the result will still be amazing. Thanks for making this. I hope for a remaster sometime in the future.
This looks really impressive, great work and keep it up!
Great video. Love the originality of it. You don’t see a lot of videos like these lately
WOW, I didn’t realize how much beautiful and better the series look in widescreen . Why hasn’t Avatar Studio done this yet?
Beautiful work man! Good job lushing yourseof through the challenge. Seems like you learned a ton, and the end result looks great! The melon lord was very wise
4:3 definitely has a nostalgia feel to it, but watching it in 16:9 is Just AMAZING!! Wish I had the entire episode :)
This was awesome! You already did a great job just from the early practice. Please keep going, this was very fun to watch :)
This is pretty brilliant. I think, in reality, the original composition being conceived with the 4:3 aspect ratio in mind, there's never going to be any important things happening at the far sides of the screen, so you can get away with mistakes, it just kind of dissolved into your peripheral vision. I maintain the only thing the show needs to be brought up to younger audiences is the wide screen formatting, not live-action or a remake.
bamn bro you put more love and care into these scenes than they did on their entire blue ray release and dvd boxset combined.
Even if not widescreen They could done somthing to make it seem less blurry on modern screens.... turning the scene widescreen is such a big improvement.
This is incredible and I want the whole show redone like this
THIS IS AMAZING!!! Literally could not stop smiling the whole way through the video 😁
I was so pleasantly surprised by this video. Seeing the title and thumbnail, I was worried this would be yet another instance of someone lazily using generative AI to tack onto a masterpiece, but what I got was a very thoughtful and creative handcrafted approach. Even though you claim you aren't an "artist", I love that you approached such a daunting task anyways, and achieved very good results!
What you accomplished on an Ipad is insane, excellent work. I personally think all of the shots look fantastic and would totally main a fan edit of yours with these remastered elements, and upscale that son of a gun to 4k while your at it :)
a hardcore fan will 100% pay you to do the whole series, i know its a huge challenge, but who knows?! :D
Wow, this is truly amazing work! You're a great artist ✨ The 4:3 aspect ratio never bothered me until now, seeing how much footage is lost behind those bars
Man this looks AMAZING!!! GREAT JOB
Oh my god I love so so much your project. Really, this is something I would love to see entirely. ❤
Imagine if every artist in the world did one shot, the remaster would be done in 2 days.
This looked awesome! Great work!
Good work dude! What a cool project (I found you from Antoine’s Chanel)
I love how the extra empty space works to show just how truly barren the south pole is
I'll say that this is very well done. Honestly, because you're adding things outside of what would normally be a border, less would be put on it in the first place, so it's okay to relax the quality a bit. Even with that said, this is amazing looking
Man you just gave me the inspiration to remaster my childhood cartoons such as the looney tunes and merry melody cartoons
This was so cool, and something I didn't know I needed. Creation! Thank you for making ATLA even that much more special. 👏👏👏❤️
bro this is amazing
pls make the whole episode
OMG! It looked great, I've been wanting to see something like this for a very long time!!
INCREDIBLE!!!!!! Excellent work, i really hope this becomes a reality for the whole show someday. I grew up with it and i still think it'd benefit from 16:9. You are very talented.
By doing this, you're already putting more love and care into the Avatar universe than Netflix did.
Tell that to the VFX artists who worked on the Netflix show.... Can we stop saying stupid things like this? You can complement one person's work without shitting all over someone else's.
@@thewatcher7940 I enjoyed the channel owner's work, and I'm angry at Netflix - so that's what I said, no more, no less. Somehow, you've concluded that I targeted the VFX artists. I didn't, and never will - I know what it's like working alongside those guys, so get off your soap box and stop getting offended on someone else's behalf when they didn't ask you to. Very presumptuous of you.
Here Here!
I thought this was going to be more of a recolor/relight with HDR lighting sort of remaster. Really cool that you are actually adding to the scenes.
I wish I could see the whole series with this treatment, it'd be amazing
Dude great video. I love the 4:3 aspect ratio way more for this show. But your art and fluid animation is wonderful. You’re super talented!!!!
Very good work for how inexperienced you claimed you were. Your attention to detail and ability to so effectively match the style of existing artwork is truly impressive!
