When I joined the British Army in 1985, UK defence budget was 5.3%. When I left in 1997 it was 2.56%! There is no way you can say 2.5% by 2030 is a 'war mode/footing'.

Agree. 'War mode' is silly media hype based on ignorance of history. 2.5% is a level appropriate for a very stable quiet world, which we do not have now. As I recall, Perun mentioned a US estimate that it costs about USD 2 billion in total to maintain a mechanised infantry brigade (say 3000 soldiers). Wartime would cost much more. The US has advantages of scale but is an expensive society so other countries might be able to do it for less. The cost for each country will be different but it gives you an idea.
Especially with how anaemic growth has been under the Tories. That’d be getting chipped away just by inflation with how low it’s been let alone any investment that’d need to be made between now and then. It’d require some major economic turnaround that’d be worthy of the history books to make that level of spending enough to finance a major expansion of the armed forces

If there's any genuine US effort to stop Ukraine from hitting Russian oil refineries, it's all just pre-election games-playing. Sure Biden doesn't want gas prices to go up. It will be bad for his chances. But in November the issue will be ancient history. In the meantime, Ukraine can ignore it.

Artur, the American government is using a diplomatic concept called "plausible deniability". This is where they publically say to Ukraine, "Please don't hit Russian oil infrastructure" but then they look the other way when Ukraine does. The reason is simple when the Russians complain, the Americans can say, "We told them not to but they didn't listen."
The chains on the front bumper of that truck are also part of the anti-drone package, to keep the drones from flying under the truck before detonating. They can't extend the chain link fence down to the ground because it would quickly get ripped off by irregularities in the surface, but chains just slide up and over such things, and they don't have to go all the way to the ground because drones need a bit of clearance from the surface themselves. It's actually a pretty clever solution.

I'm in the UK and we're *definitely* expanding our military production right now. There's a factory near my house that produces stuff for military aviation and drones and they are building another factory right now, they started construction about a month ago. They're basically doubling production

In economics, that's called "vertical expansion". You've got an army. You don't expand horizontally, i.e. additional troops. You expand vertically meaning you start making your own supplies for the army you've got. Eventually, you own steel factories, iron mines, computer fabs, silicon mines . . . everything back to the origin of whatever your army uses.

If they really are making more equipment and weapons than they are losing, they could be holding it in reserve for a second front. Putin could well be mentally deficient enough to make a go at the Baltic States, which would start a war with NATO.

As far as banning nuclear weapons in space, how has everyone forgotten that we did that in 1967. It was called the Outer Space Treaty and it was signed and ratified by 114 countries including the US and Russia (then USSR). There was no need for another treat, that one is still fully in force. If Russia wants to abrogate the treaty, that's up to them, but the vote on this new treaty is just gamesmanship by all parties concerned, as long at the 1967 treaty remains in force.
