Why Storm Clouds Turn Green Before a Tornado

- Why do clouds turn green before a tornado occurs? Are these green clouds directly linked to tornadoes forming? Lets find out…
Hidden inside visible sunlight is the rainbow of colors all mixed up. If an object reflects back, or scatters all that light, that object appears to us, white as well. If an object absorbs all the light, and scatters none back, it appears black to us. That’s the main reason why my black car gets hotter than the white car parked next to me.
If an object absorbs only some of the colors in the spectrum and scatters back others, it appears to our eye, the colors scattered back. So a red apple absorbs blues and greens and scatters back red. Bodies of clear water, absorb reds, and yellows first, and scatter back mostly blue.
Some of the biggest thunderstorms can generate areas of concentrated heavy rain and hail that look like waterfalls. Storm chasers call this the core. Sometimes storm clouds part giving you a glimpse into the core aloft.
If you’re underneath the storm base, around midday, the core is often blueish or a gorgeous turquoise. But in the late afternoon and evening when most storm activity occurs, angled golden and reddish sunset light might mix with the blue precipitation core and the net effect is a greenish color. Yellow and blue makes green!
The sky is blue because the gas molecules mostly nitrogen and oxygen scatter the blue wave lengths all over the place while the warmer wavelengths tend to pass through. That's why the sunset turns red. As the sun's altitude becomes lower, it shines through more and more atmosphere. All the blue is scattered first and it's mostly only the warmer visible wavelengths that reach our eye.
Another way a storm can add a yellowish filter to the blue core is by kicking up a lot of dust. The more powerful the storm, the more wind, and often, the more dust flying through the air. Looking through this yellowish air into the blue core can also give a net greenish effect to a viewer.
So, what does it mean when the clouds are green? The green color in storms doesn’t guarantee a tornado, but it usually means there’s a powerful thunderstorm with heavy rain and hail.
And powerful thunderstorms that produce tornadoes often produce heavy rain and hail. So, it wouldn't hurt to have a plan if you see a storm cloud turn green.
Why are Tornadoes green? Tornadoes come on all the shades of grey, sometimes almost bright white, and other times dark black. This is all relative to the viewer and the current lightning situation. If a tornado is well lit, it appears brighter, If it is silhouetted against a brighter sky, it appears dark. Sometimes setting sunlight can shine on a tornado giving it an orange or yellow tint. But tornadoes are generally not green. Sometimes the clouds behind a tornado are green.

My 4 year old daughter loves talking about weather, especially storms and tornadoes. (I see meteorology or storm chasin' in her future) I found your channel one day while searching for tornado videos. She absolutely loves you, Hank! When its her screen time, she will say "I want to watch Hank!" and will watch you for as long as I let her. Her favorite video is the one where the roof is ripped off in the thumbnail. Just thought you may enjoy knowing you have fans of all ages.
Wow! That's super inspiring to hear Amy. Please tell your daughter I said howdy (and that she has good taste) :D
Indeed your an inspiration, especially since, for some people, you have a firm mindset, a knowledgeable background, and serious content on your back.
Amy Adams That's so awesome! My 11yo loves Hank too. Both channels, actually.
Amy Adams Has she seen the video he did about the lightning and fireflies? It’s one of my favorites. He strums Over the Rainbow on his guitar while we watch two of nature’s most beautiful phenomena. Of course, it may not be exciting enough for her taste. It sounds like she’s a little go-getter. I hope she stays inquisitive and enthusiastic:)
CREEPY
Fun Fact: Rainbows aren't actually bows or arcs, but full circles, like lunar haloes. You just can't see the whole thing, that's all.
I have seen a couple rainbow halos, one was around the sun as its bright light shone through high clouds on a cloudy day.
@@mynamedoesnotmatter737 In Canada, we call those 'sundogs'
@@dustthewolf6620 yeah, I've seen sundogs and circle rainbows, circle rainbows are in the middle of the sky
I was flying on an airplane once, and I looked out the window, and below us was a perfect “halo” rainbow. One of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen! 🌈
@@dustthewolf6620 I’m in Indiana and we also call those Sundogs.
This channel is way underrated
Nalani Pimentel that this channel is underrated is an understatement😁
Nalani - You are right about that. He is an amazing videographer. I'm from the midwest originally and have been through a total of five tornados, and actually inside an ice cream parlor when it's roof was removed by one. One other one was close (I was in a hayloft in a barn and it passed between the house and myself, and the straw was sucked out the front door while I laid as flat as I could) I'm sure it was barely an F1, but it still scared me as a kid. Three others I just witnessed, but still close enough to worry me. I felt like a tornado magnet when I was a kid, and I was a kid during the day of 'a hundred tornados'... or whatever they called it. Pecos is pretty good at his tornado chasing, so I'll just stick to his channel when I want to see the next one. I'm no longer interested in being in one myself!
NOT
I guess people don't care for tornadoes
IDIOT
When I was a kid in West Texas when you saw those green clouds you headed for the shelter.
Where to exactly?
You know you're in deep shit when the sky goes from gray, to green, to black at 3pm.
And it's so damned dark not only do the street lights come on, you need to switch the lights on in your apartment as well, just to avoid crashing into furniture. Yikes.....head for the basement !!!
It's usually the cold air that moves in at that point, followed by heavy wind and lightning.
It's about that time when people say, "The bottom fell out."
Thank you for the explanation. I have seen green clouds around severe weather many times. Last evening I had my first ever up-close experience with an F1 tornado in Grove City, Ohio. I noticed the approaching clouds to appear green. It was early evening.
Sean Flaharty I’ve never seen a tornado in grove city. It must have been super miled and short lasting because tornados are super rare here lol
@@tommywiseau6873 it was an F1 that happened a few years ago. It did some damage on Hoover Road and continued to the Buckeye Parkway area. I have video of it. Search for “F1 Tornado in Grove City” and it should show up.
@@SeanFlaharty ok I’ll have to see it. There’s been some nasty storms over the years in the west side area but I’ve never recalled any tornados touching down
@@tommywiseau6873 As stupid as it sounds, I have been wanting to see a tornado up close since I was a kid. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It was a smaller tornado but one I won't forget.
Very green clouds could also mean that lots of hail is forming, lots of hail needs strong updrafts to form, the same strong cold updrafts that produce tornadoes in some cases.
If you see a slow moving storm that has a pronounced lowered mesocyclone with bright emerald colours around it and even vivid rainbows, it is very likely to also have tornado in there.
The only reason i look forward to tornado season is because i get to see some amazing Pecos Hank videos. Can't wait to see what this year brings.
Pecos Hank is the best.
Agreed! He's a legend
firefighterv29 ikr!
Hope to bring you some sweeties.
i can already tell this year is gonna be good
The moment I see that Hank Pecos made a video; I already know that it is going amazing, mesmorising, and beautiful.
Yeah, I liked and favorited it as soon as I got to it!

My dad has passed but you remind me of him. That's a huge compliment. From the animals to the weather there's so many similarities. I finally said this because what you share in this video is what he taught me. He'd sit outside & watch storms a lot. He'd point out the colors & the clouds. Watch for the hook, Mick. That's where it'll drop. That's my nickname. Loved & respected storms ever since.
When my mom was little in the 40’s she was playing outside and the sky turned green. In Wisconsin. Then a metal trash can came out of nowhere and whacked her in the head, knocking her unconscious. She was only 5. I’m guessing that was a straight line wind... pre tornado.
Possibly a plow wind. It may occur when a tornado is forming or if a Derecho is approaching.
Hank is the one person I'd sit through a lecture from with a smile

Pecos Hank videos are absolutely the best tornado videos... bar none!
He's always calm cool and collected, as well as funny too.
And of course, his Cinnamon Toast Crunch always makes it's way into most videos.
No screaming or yelling or repeating the same words over and over again.
Just informative interesting videos that truly educate and inspire you.
Thanks Hank for all you do.
You just gained a subscriber, my dude. I'm a trained spotter and I really love meteorology and photography, but I never cared a whole lot for storm chasing videos. The quality of your cinematography is pristine. You have a GREAT eye for composure. All that plus your informed narration really set you apart from the other chasers out there. ❤️
I agree!!
I am so glad I found your Channel!! I love what you do!!
Andrew Crance I found this channel because i was watching a documentary of the el Reno tornado and I had seen it
Andrew Crance your*
Andrew Crance You made a great choice,imo-he’s not only the most knowledgeable chaser..but the biggest balls and he’s entertaining!
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever, once heard Pecos yell “Violent Tornnnnao”..he actually gets kinda quiet when shit gets deadly, think I’ve only heard fear in his voice maybe once or twice..and even then he keeps his composure.
Prob why he’s still alive.
Maybe someone can back me up-one of my fav tornados to study was El Reno,I didn’t agree with the methods of Samaras but that’s neither here nor there..point is,if you sit through all the footage you can find 20x then watch Pecos while he’s there..it’s just surreal,Pecos knew how big it was and a lot of very experienced chasers didn’t until it was too late.Dude knew that beast was hunting chasers,he didn’t engage that monster like he usually does.
Start a Patreon, Pecos. You've got a following. Get some gas money!
Hold that thought...
Seriously. I'd support you!
Seriously. I'm on Patreon trying to find you so I can be your first patreon! Where are you, man?
I want a shirt too, lol!
I'd gladly sub to the patreon
You be careful out there... you have compassion, attentiveness, diligence, resourcefulness and a host of other amazing attributes... My kind of guy. You remind me of Tim... you know! May he and son and colleague rest in peace.
2:07 this was the same shade of green that I saw before the rare SLC tornado in 1999 which was around noon that day. There was a lot of construction being done on the street during that time. I always wondered about the sickening (IMO) greenish hue before I saw the tornado. Thanks for posting this video. It explains a lot!
I also saw this happening during several thunderstorms without tornadoes happening. Though you can be sure it's gonna be bad weather if the sky turns green xD
It mainly means hail is what I was always told, hail is larger than rain and refracts differently, that’s why it’s green.
@@Jordan-vr7ip Ah okay! That's very interesting
@@Jordan-vr7ip Most exacly..has a different refractive index..!
You shoot some incredibly beautiful footage Hank. Never stop.
Hi Hank. I just found your channel about 3 weeks ago and have since watched almost every video. I'm going thru a difficult personal patch right now and your storm chasing clips really made me feel better somehow, looking at the wonder of nature, made me relaxed. Thank you for everything and I look forward to this next season of your videos. Andy
Hang in there friend. We all have to go through those rough patches. Keep your chin up.
I live in Missouri and I saw this once when I was in fourth grade. I was completely in awe. It looked like something out of the movies. It was such a bright green and it seemed so ominous. The clouds around it were such a dark gray that the only word that could accurately describe the sight was gnarly.
Looking forward to your 3 1/2 month long storm chase. Maybe you could do a little Vlog again? Those were quite enjoyable. Stay safe and happy trails
Its a radiation storm! Run guys! D:
Funny how green color in storms are signals of danger. Like similar things in games.
Is this why the wicked witch of the west was green??
@@KCJbomberFTW also why Maleficent has green flames. Disney uses green for all those who are evil.
I’ve always been mesmerized by tornados and associated green clouds with them from the twister scene where Bill is dropping dirt in the wind and says “it’s going green” to dusty
When you learn about Pecos Hank and are like "Cool! Storm chasing vids!" and hope to learn something about tornadoes, but you leave knowing about storms, snakes, and even the color wheel.
I absolutely love the fact that not only do you film some amazing footage of these storms you chase, but you take the time to teach the viewers something that they probably never knew before. Like this video, for example... I never knew this! You are the storm chaser I recommend others to watch
I used to see this in Kansas and Missouri. Never seen such a color. It was actually pretty. The air changes as well. Aloha
One day this channel WILL GO VIRAL. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. WE OTHERWISE WOULD NEVER KNOW...Stay safe
I’ve been a weather geek for decades but I never really knew why tornadic skies turn green. I love your channel because it’s not just tornado videos, it’s a learning experience.
Cores are always my favorite part of supercells. The green, misty tint of 'em gives off this ominous aura that always makes my hairs stand on edge.
I love your videos.... but.... they’ve conditioned me into thinking I should hear your beautifully composed and haunting background each time I’m in a storm.
This happened here in CT last night. Lots of strong storms came through in the evening and the clouds had an ominous green hue. Apparently one tornado was confirmed, but there were several warnings throughout the state due to lots of rotation
My dad was station in Ft Riley. KS. For 7 1/2 yrs. Frm 3rd grade up. I'll never forget the sky turning green I'll never forget the smell, the wind, the hail and tornados. I'm glad I have those memories of playing outside and watch a massive storm roll in. Good times. Good vibes. HIGH FIVE🖐
Im really looking forward to you're 2018 chasing season!!!
Ayyy my dude's back for tornado season! Hell yeah!
I recently had a tornado near my county. My whole family hid in the bathroom for about an hour. It was really scary. I’m only 9, but I hope I get to be a tornado chaser like you. I try to study every tornado that has happened in the 2000’s. But there’s other ones.
EX:
Tri-State tornado. Went through 3 states. One of the longest tornados on the ground.
BTW, you inspire me to step up and not be scared of a little debris or rain. Thank you.
I’ve seen is before in Brooklyn when there was a small tornado
I remember you having around 25k subscribers in.. I think it was June or July 2015... Now you are at astonishing 177k! Congrats, man!
Good for you hank that's quite an honor ! My daughter graduated from there , go bobcat ! I live about an hour from there hank.
I'm extremely honored. It was amazing being around so much weather enthusiasm. Great campus and people. And Sol had some good sandwiches.
Pecos Hank lol hank your the best . you know hank you weren't to terribly far from xenia Ohio that got destroyed by an f5 in 74. My dad took me there to see the destruction ill never forget that I was 9. Have a great and safe tornado season hank , thanks

You're genuinely the only person who's tornado videos I can watch. Plus I love how you put some education in there!

I honestly love the poetic descriptions you give to the storms in your video, it gives them a character and even a more surreal thought to them.
Yay! 3 and a half months of storm chasing coming! So excited!
Never found a channel about this sort of thing that I've really liked! Great job! I found your account yesterday, just watching all the videos of yours that I can find, haha
Welcome aboard Katana. Hope you like some of the art as well.
I've only ever seen this once, and I will never forget it! I was 7yrs old, and it was as bright green as the one in your thumbnail!
we had eerie green skies the day of May 31, 1985 with deadly tornadoes in NW Pennsylvania. i saw it with my own eyes & will never forget it 😢
Whenever I see yellow or green skies I get scared.
And then you herp.
🤣 true dat. what's a little hail, wind and 80mph winds?
Whenever I see low clouds, I get scared!
Whenever there is severe summer weather I get scared. Traumatic experience love in Blue ash, Ohio when an F5 hit airport. At least that's what I was told.
Perks for being in tornado alley I guess, not only in tornado alley, but I hate it when there's always a severe thunderstorm watch.
My first tornado season through Hank's eyes (camera)! Look forward to fresh vids. I got family in Athens!
I remember seeing this in a tornado producing thunderstorm as a little kid, stuck at the YMCA. I was always a weather buff as a kid, so it stuck with me. Thank you for answering a question that stuck with me for 30 years!

The best channel of storms and tornadoes!
Greetings from Argentina, the second country with the most tornadoes...
Salud from Texas!
Really? What is the worst in memory to hit Argentina? Always thought the USA and Bangladesh were the only countries to get BIG Tornadoes. We get the rare one or 2 every couple of years in Australia but they could be barely classified as an EF2.
czcams.com/video/Iv9nw5JmY4I/video.html&t
Last freak one we had a few years ago.
SEE YAI AYE Tornadoes don’t do borders. India gets some pretty bad ones. But, there is actually a little “tornado alley” in South America. The Andes act similar to the Rockies in the US and can create some rockin’ storms.
In Argentina we had many waves of tornadoes, the record is of more than 300 tornadoes in 24 hours... F-0 to F-4.
We also had the strongest tornado in the southern hemisphere, a powerful F5 in the city of San Justo. The tornado killed more than 60 people.
More than a month ago a tornado destroyed a city in Argentina, called General Acha
It is not uncommon for tornadoes to appear, every year they report.
The problem is that they are not given importance. There are no storm-chasers who can report one. If they happen at night or in an inhospitable place, nobody finds out, unless they destruct a city. And at least once a week, they form arc-shaped storms with destructive winds and severe hail.
The difference with the United States is the extension of the plain, in addition, the warm waters of the Caribbean fuel strong storms.
