- The Portugese trickster goes on a one man crusade running rings around the Italian defense which featured the likes of Maldini, Vierchowod, Costacurta and Tassotti. Futre was simply on fire and although he grabbed an assist, he probably deserved a lot more.

He gave them a lot of opportunities to score but they just couldn't finish the play. Some horrible finishers those were! Paulo Futre was one of the best in the world.

Some of the Italian defenders decided he was a bit too good to be allowed to run! Some nasty fouls by Tassoti, in particular.
Yes that was a Baresi-less* Milan defense that he was toying with. Got three players booked and Vierchowod should have had a yellow too for hacking him down, and Tassotti should probably have been sent off. Amazing player who unfortunately never quite fulfilled his potential.
* Vierchowod is not too shabby as far as replacements go though.
He fulfilled his potential immensely. While playing at porto and atlético he up there with the best in the world. Just the knee surgeries cut his career short.
Portugal had no finishers in front of the net back in those days.

And this Portugal team from the early/mid 90s had a lot of superstars, combining the "old" ones, like Futre and Rui Barros, with the new generation from Vítor Baía, Fernando Couto, Paulo Sousa, João Vieira Pinto, Luís Figo and Rui Costa.
It was a shame that they did't make the 1992 Euro and the 1994 World Cup.
It would had been great to see them along the other european underdogs, like Romania (Petrescu, Belodedici, Popescu, Răducioiu, Hagi, Dumitrescu and Lăcătuș), Sweden (Ravelli, Patrik Andersson, Larsson, Dahlin, Brolin and Kennet Andersson) and Bulgaria (Ivanov, Kostadinov, Stoichkov, Letchkov, Yordanov, Balakov and Penev).
