    the quotes + some analysis:
    “brave macbeth - well he deserves that name” Ross, A1S2. shows how macbeth is presented at the beginning of the play in contrast to how he is presented towards the end. macbeth called ‘brave’ for defeating a traitor but he also becomes a traitor of the king.
    “let not light see my dark and deep desires” macbeth, A1S4. hints that macbeth is falling into the trap of evil and slowly becoming a vessel of misconduct for the witches, and begins his spiral into good and evil. the witches are the catalyst of this development in macbeths character.
    “unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty” lady macbeth, A1S5. this androboulon emphasises how lady macbeth is aware that she does not hold the power or the authority to commit evil, which is why she defeminises herself and turns to supernatural, commanding evil with desperation to give her masculine qualities so that she becomes the embodiment of evil and gains the strength to kill king duncan.
    “when thou durst do it, then you were a man” lady macbeth, A1S7. in other words, lady macbeth calls macbeth a coward and emasculates him, which can also show how lady macbeth and macbeth have changed authority and gender roles (lady macbeth asks for masculine traits and macbeth gets emasculated). tipping point for macbeth, he submerges into evil to prove his masculinity to his wife by killing the king (duncan).
    “will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand” macbeth, A2S2. shows macbeths guilt for killing the king. one of the only times macbeth shows remorse for his actions, and as he progresses and continues killing, he sinks deeper into evil and his remorse for his actions decreases as they become normalised and his greed for power and the king’s position increases.
    “out, out, brief candle! lifes but a walking shadow” macbeth, A5S2. a shadow doesn’t end, no matter how long you chase it, it wont stop, emphasises macbeths greed for power and the crown and how he wanted more and more that it was endless.
    “look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under’t” lady macbeth, A1S5. lady macbeth tells macbeth to be deceptive and to fool the king and make it easier to kill him so macbeth can become king. religious imagery, serpent is like the snake in the garden of eden who tempted adam and eve to eat from the tree of knowledge which they weren’t supposed to, shows moral evil and how macbeth is being encouraged to become evil.
    “fair is foul and foul is fair.” the witches, A1S1. juxtaposition/oxymoron. describes how good is bad and bad is good, emphasises the idea of how macbeth was good and then turned evil as he fell a victim of greed and dark desire. macbeth mimics this phrase in a later scene which foreshadows how he has turned to supernatural and evil to get what he desires and shows how he is a vessel of misconduct.

    In act 1 scene 3 macbeth states “ let not light see my deep dark desires” this quote already implies that macbeth has began to think of his villainous thoughts. this is set straight after he meets the witches and before he comes in contacts with lady macbeth. this means that he is the catalyst within this situation as he hadn’t had a push from lady macbeth to think in this manor. this means he has always been a traitor and never really cared for the king and his people but only for his self. the word ‘light’ can be seen as multiple different metaphors, in this situation i think it is too describe God. he states that he does not won’t god to see his desires. this further shows his ambition as he even though god may be against his actions he is still willing to have these thought of murder. shakspeare used macbeths ambition too signify to the audience how his own ambition is his fatal flaw, or hamartia. this will make the jacobean people believe that if they would challenge the king it will end in likely death

    for 'will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?' you can also include 'No' at the end which Macbeth says straight after asking the question. if you keep the 'No', you can analyse the method not just as rhetoric but also as hypophora which emphasises Macbeth's guilty conscience :)

  • @VypaGaming
    @VypaGaming Před 2 lety +58

    This is one paragraph that I would say when talking about the theme of power:
    Shakespeare portrays power in Macbeth to tell the reader that no other character is stronger than Macbeth. We see this when Shakespeare writes 'Brave Macbeth - Well he deserves that name.' The adjective 'Brave' connotes strength which suggests that Macbeth is capable of many things, for example, when Macbeth kills Duncan in order to become king, also, when he kills Banquo because he seems suspicious of him. The verb 'deserves' suggests that Macbeth is worthy enough to be titled 'Brave' as he is capable of killing many people and many others can't do this. This leads to great success for Macbeth because he results in becoming king, however, he later then gets killed by Macduff for his actions. Shakespeare intended to make the reader think that Macbeth is unstoppable and undefeatable as killing many people comes across as a small task for Macbeth. This is why the reader would feel cautious for other character's lives, because the chances of Macbeth succeeding another slaughter is extremely likely. As a result, it's clear that Macbeth is the strongest character in the play because of his killing spree.

    I think Macbeth experiences a tremendous amount of guilt following Banquo's murder (a little more than Duncan) first he was not able to kill Banquo himself unlike Duncan which he could do with his own hands but for Banquo, he orders the prisoners to do it for him as he cannot face him after such a betrayal and the reaction of Banquo when he releases that he was right of Macbeth following the witches prophesies; Macbeth was much closer to Banquo than to Duncan which could explain the guilt presented in the form of the supernatural. Then after Banquo's murder, Macbeth began experiencing hallucinations which were all side effects of the great amount of guilt possessed despite him not killing Banquo himself but he still sees Banquo's ghost which ultimately drives him insane but when he kills lady Macduff and her child he is suppressed from the guilt as this has become a common attribute normalised within him despite being partially aware and pessimistic of Macduff's arrival following on from the death of his family.

      Are you sure they're enough to get a good grade?

    • @Smixx0
      @Smixx0 Před 2 lety +16

      @Genziki ツ they all share particular themes, for example : “stars hide your fire, let not light see my dark and deep desires” can link to the Supernatural, ambition and guilt.
      Supernatural: “fires” “desires”=rhyming couplet, The Witches speak in rhyme meaning there is an evil message linking with supernatural: murder
      Ambition: “stars” look nice from far away and that is how people see Macbeth at the start, a strong and brave soldier, however up close they are just destructive balls of gas symbolising Macbeth’s greed for ambition which further leads to his downfall.
      Guilt: feels guilty having these ‘dark’ thoughts on murdering Duncan so he keeps his “dark desires” away from “light”

    OCR makes you learn 'moments' not quotes. So after analysing the extract you must do a min of 2 paragraphs or more on one moment- eg one scene of the play. You get marked down if you talk about two different moments. So we have to learn like 4 quotes for each moment.
