Incase someone needs all the quotes with some of themes etc. ⬇
"A man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own." - Mr Birling - This quote highlights the theme of individualism and self-interest. Mr Birling believes that each person should take care of themselves and not worry about the well-being of others.
"But these girls aren’t cheap labour - they’re people." - Sheila - This quote highlights the theme of social responsibility and the importance of treating all people with dignity and respect. The Inspector is emphasizing that the working-class girls should not be seen as mere commodities, but as human beings deserving of fair treatment.
"If we were all responsible for everything that happened to everybody we’d had anything to do with, it would be very awkward, wouldn’t it?" - Mr Birling - This quote highlights the theme of personal responsibility and the idea that individuals should take responsibility for their actions and their impact on others. Mr Birling is trying to avoid taking responsibility for his actions, by suggesting that it would be too difficult for everyone to be held accountable for everyone they have ever interacted with.
"First, the girl herself. … Secondly, I blame the young man who was the father of the child… He should be made an example of." - Mrs Birling - This quote highlights the theme of personal responsibility and the idea that individuals should take responsibility for their actions and their impact on others. Mrs Birling is trying to deflect blame from herself and her family, by placing the responsibility on the girl and the father of the child.
"I wasn’t in love with her or anything - but I liked her - she was pretty and a good sport." - Eric - This quote highlights the theme of the objectification of women. Eric is describing the girl he had an affair with in a way that reduces her to her physical appearance and her ability to be entertaining.
"We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other." (metaphor) - Inspector - This quote highlights the theme of social responsibility and the idea that society is interconnected and that each person has a responsibility to care for the well-being of others. The Inspector is using the metaphor of a body to emphasize that when one member of society is suffering, it affects the entire community.
"The point is, you don’t seem to have learnt anything." - Sheila - This quote highlights the theme of personal responsibility and the idea that individuals should take responsibility for their actions and their impact on others. Sheila is frustrated that the other characters have not taken the Inspector's lesson to heart and are still trying to avoid taking responsibility for their actions.
"One Eva Smith has gone… but there are millions… of Eva Smiths… all intertwined with our lives… if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish." - Inspector - This quote highlights the theme of social responsibility and the idea that society is interconnected and that each person has a responsibility to care for the well-being of others. The Inspector is emphasizing that if society does not learn the lesson of caring for one another, it will be punished severely.
"When you’re married, you’ll realise that men with important work to do sometimes have to spend all their time and energy on their business." - Mrs Birling - This quote highlights the theme of gender roles and the idea that men have more important responsibilities than women. Mrs Birling is suggesting that once Sheila is married, she will understand that her husband's business is more important than her own needs.
"Clothes mean something quite different to a woman." - Mr Birling - This quote highlights the theme of gender roles and the idea that society has different expectations and perceptions of men and women. Mr Birling is suggesting that clothing is more significant to women than it is to men, possibly implying that women are judged more harshly based on their appearance.
The quote “but these girls aren’t cheap labour…” isn’t by the inspector it is by Sheila

@@MI-lo2hj lmao that embarrassing
Nah bro, him and Mr. Salles should never get as big as Mr. Bruff...
Mr. Bruff is fine cause he only really helps you get a grade 7 at most, imagine if everyone watched this guy and Mr salles, the grade boundaries would be so high.
@@shaaravguha3760 imo mr bruff sucks. he just gives useless tips and it looks like he rushes his videos a lot just to get them over with.
@@Abdullah-cb4np That's the point, let others have the worse teacher (he isn't bad, but not as good) so they don't get higher grades, this lowers the grade boundaries and allows us to get higher grades. Imagine if Mr Everything English and Mr Salles became that huge, everyone would get high grades and the grade boundaries would sore.

to all studying inspector calls:
you killed her - damn you- damn you (ao2 fragmented speech and repetition of damn you creating a sense of aggression and tension between eric and sybil) ao3 (yap abt younger generation vs older generation and how socialism links to this)
she looked young and fresh ( gerald says this a02 semantic field of meat and animals aka zoomorphism showing objectifying of women) ao3(suggests how even gerald is a slave to capitalism as he cant marry whom he wants to but the wealthy)
unsinkable absolutely unsinkable (ao2 repetition emphasising birlings views plus dramatic irony) ao3 ( 1945 viewers know the titanic has sunk so birlings yapping)
if men do not learn that lesson they shall be taught it in fire and blood and anguish (ao2 polysyndeton means repetition of conjugations such as 'and' so the consequences are emphasised also creates a semantic field of hell.) ao3 (link it to how the inspector is always 'cutting in" so he cooks capitalism)
clothes mean something quite different to a women (ao2 is a euphemism which means an expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.) ao3 (this shows how women are forced to hide their opinions due to expectations. it also suggests that women are respected by their clothes which suggests how they are victims to capitalism.)
it was a hellish thing to see- oh my god (ao2 juxtaposition between hellish and god suggests the extent to which the rape has cooked eric. The fragmented speech emphasises this. this is also a euphemism)
4:15 capitalism quote
6:50 socialist argument quote
9:30 Capitalism quote/responsibility

Just another quote i think is extremely important is "Girls of that class-" by Mrs Birling. Because it can be connected to why she refused Eva help and how the upper class view the lower class. (And also because my English teacher has been going on and on about this quote being one of the most important quotes in the play and that questions on it are surely going to come.)
Hope this helped.
ok
yes definitely a useful quote that takes into account ideas of lower-class mistreatment and capitalism. Mrs Birling employs a repulsive tone when referring to the lower class which highlights her disgust of the lower class and presents her as a character whose mindset has completely been corrupted with the idealogies of capitalism. The word 'that' could also imply that Mrs Birling sees the lower-class as one meaningless group of people who deserve to have no place in society. This highlights her callous and corrupt nature as the stereotypical upper-class wife. Priestley may have used the cold nature of Mrs Birling towards the lower class to present the severe effects of capitalism on upper-class individuals which causes them to treat lower classes in a way that dehumanizes them.

@@connorseaturtle3162 honestly I’m shocked at how well it went, I only revised the night before using his quote videos and got a 7. I genuinely blame it on the videos, as the quotes are so good for any question and you can truly go in depth with your analysis, without running out of things to say or repeating yourself 🥰
do we have any insight on what the character question could be for edexcel? I was thinking that because we've mainly covered all the characters we could possibly get one about the relationship between Eric and Arthur Birling but who knows...
We get two questions to pick from, I’ve looked at past papers and one of the questions are associated with mr birling in each one I’ve checked
