    Have you ever thought about using Con-Tact paper instead of transfer tape? Well Jessica put this idea to the test to see which one works better!
    A lot of people think Con-Tact paper is cheaper than transfer tape. In reality, you get a lot less product from the dollar store. So, when you compare the amount of product you get to the price you pay, they really are about the same price. So why not use the product that was made to be used with vinyl?
    Jessica demonstrates in this video the ease of use transfer tape really makes when using vinyl. The Con-Tact paper in this video made it difficult to peel up the vinyl but released it well. The transfer tape made it easy to pick up the vinyl and release it.
    Like stated in the video, Con-Tact paper might work great in a pinch, but if you’re serious about vinyl we recommend using our transfer tape. Check out this link to look at the different transfer tape we sell! goo.gl/yRafGi

    Irrespective of the performance of transfer tape versus contact paper, the cost analysis you did on the two is wholly incorrect. Contact paper is indeed cheaper. You failed to acknowledge the width difference of the two rolls when calculating cost per square inch. The transfer tape is only 12" wide whereas the contact paper is 18" wide. This has to be included in your calculations. (18"x 54" at $1 compared to 12"x 360" at $9.99) You would essentially pay $4.44 for the same amount of contact paper that you would pay $9.99 for in transfer tape.

    This was obviously a very biased video. I got a roll of contact paper at Walmart for $4.97 that is 18" wide and 20ft long. The price per square inch on that comes out to roughly .001. The transfer tape is $9.99 for 12" by 30ft which equates to .002 per square inch. So Contact paper is cheaper, by half. When you use a lot that adds up. I don't really have any problems with contact paper for transferring. I personally like the paper backing as I think it makes it easier to work with and cut the right size and not be wasteful.

    I agree 100% with this video. I bought some Contact paper from the dollar tree, because people kept telling me it was the best and cheapest thing to do...I have struggled so hard with it. It didn't matter how much I rubbed or pressed it just didn't want to pick up the vinyl. I got tired of it and went and purchased transfer tape. Best money I've spent. It saved me so much time and hassle. Sometimes the cheapest way, isn't the best way.

    Contact paper is a hit or miss. Sometimes I use use it and it works great and others it's hard to pick up the vinyl. Transfer tape definitely picks up waaaaay easier, but contact paper is a great for small little projects that you dont want to waste the good expensive stuff on lol I also have used the white contact paper from the dollar store, I love it! I've been using the Contact paper for almost a year. The only problem that I have run across it that it will sometimes leave some adhesive on your vinyl if it stays on more that 24 hours. Even more so if the cut project with contact paper is left in a hot vehicle.

    Accurate video in my opinion. I tried being cheap (as this was a donation) and used contact paper. I had 125 decals to do. Way too much work, effort and time. Never will I stray from REAL transfer tape again. The contact paper was exactly like you showed, no matter how many times I rubbed the front and back of the decals, it did not lift the vinyl. I gave up after 5 decals and used the real deal (transfer tape) and not the cricut brand either...I use what the sign shops use.

      I would venture to say you tend to go back to the one you carry because you carry it...lol. It's kind of a biased opinion. You even said before you tried it that you would stick with contact paper because it's made to transfer vinyl. In actuality it's "marketed" to transfer vinyl. Hence why it costs so much. It's all marketing.
      I've never had an issue with contact paper.

    • @BriannaBanana1
      @BriannaBanana1 Před 4 lety +1

      @@cmil1051 I'm guessing transfer tape IS actually MADE to transfer vinyl. I remember reading an article a little while back about the careful balance that needs to be achieved with the adhesive on transfer tape for it to work properly. It has to be strong enough to pull the weeded vinyl off of its paper backing (read: the tape needs to adhere more strongly to the vinyl than the vinyl adheres to its backing), but also weak enough that the vinyl pieces will release onto whatever substrate they are attached to (read: the vinyl adheres more strongly to that substrate than the transfer tape adheres to the vinyl). Contact paper might achieve this balance, but what I'm saying is that I'm guessing at least some of the things marketed as transfer tape use adhesive specifically formulated for use with vinyl transfers. (As we know, not all transfer tape is created equal.)

    Sometimes we may run out of our favorites and look for something closer to home until our order can come in. Painters tape works goo - right on down to masking tape. I would not use it all the time because it would be rather expensive. It's a quickie when you're out. The dollar tree can make some great savings as well. I don't always believe when a person pushes these high-end products because usually, the company furnishes an abundant supply for free.

    I will honestly say I use multiple transfer mediums and all have their ups and downs. I like con-tact paper because it's not as tacky as cricut's transfer tape therefore it releases easier. However with con-tact paper I have had some of the tackiness stay on my vinyl after transfering. It's not horrible as it comes off easy enough. Now today I tried wet application with the paper transfer tape and I absolutely love it over any other medium I've used. My only complaint is not being able to see my design as well. Use what works for you. I will continue to keep all on hand for different projects. Con-tact paper is also a decent substitute in an emergency if you can't wait for something to be shipped to you.

    • @Expressionsvinyls
      @Expressionsvinyls  Před 5 lety

      Hi Christina, that could be part if it. If the contact paper is too tacky it is still holding on to the vinyl a little bit. So it will pull up the parts that are not completely adhered to your project. It can be a combination of that as well as what you are applying it to. If the surface will not allow the vinyl to adhere to it completely it makes it difficult to release the vinyl from the transfer tape. I'd recommend trying out different types of transfer tape to see what works better. We have a lot of success with the paper transfer tape that you can get here - expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/paper/

    • @Expressionsvinyls

      Yes, since removable vinyl has an adhesive that isn't super strong it will be harder to get it to release. You will want to get a lower tack transfer tape so it's easier to release.

    • @Expressionsvinyls

      Hi Eva, that is one that is tricky to work with. The Cricut Glitter has more of a texture to it so it does require the strong grip transfer tape that comes with the vinyl. Transfer tape works great for smooth surfaces but not when applying vinyl stencils on things like wood. Sure it picks it up great but does not transfer well because the tape sticks to the vinyl more than the vinyl sticks to the wood. Contact paper works better and it DOES pick up the vinyl just fine. I used the same piece of contact paper for several transfers with no issues. These videos are helpful but this one was obviously bias and, in my opinion, flat out wrong.

    I don't think you have factored in application. Transfer tape is high tack, and will often adhere to the vinyl sooooo good, that it is hard to get the vinyl to release to the surface that you are applying it to. For example, transfer tape will not allow any transfer to any semi-soft surface. It has its applications, but transfer tape is not good for all vinyl applications. I know this is an old video, but still.
