@ThomasDeLauerOfficial The work you put in is incredible. You provide valuable bitesize info that's easy to understand. It's great that you can also look back and point out when you have got things wrong, too. I've started a new website/blog dedicated to men's health and fitness, and your content, as well as others, have encouraged me to set this up.

The key takeaways from Thomas Delauer's discussion on collagen misconceptions are:
    1. **Collagen's Unique Role**: Collagen peptides are not just another form of protein; they act as signaling molecules that specifically encourage the body's collagen production and restructuring, offering benefits that other proteins do not.
    2. **Collagen and Caffeine**: Contrary to the belief that caffeine negatively impacts collagen, adding collagen to caffeinated beverages like coffee may actually help counteract any potential degradation of collagen caused by caffeine, making it a beneficial combination.
    3. **Vitamin C's Role**: While vitamin C is crucial for collagen synthesis, it is not necessary to take it simultaneously with collagen supplements for effective absorption. Vitamin C acts more as a co-factor in the body's natural collagen formation process rather than directly influencing collagen supplement absorption.
    4. **Marine vs. Bovine Collagen**: The debate between marine and bovine collagen might not be as significant for most consumers. Bovine collagen, being more thermally stable and cost-effective, could be a better choice for general use, despite marine collagen's touted benefits.
    5. **Supplements vs. Whole Foods**: Both collagen supplements and whole food sources of collagen have their place in a balanced diet. Supplements can quickly elevate the body's collagen levels, especially beneficial for recovery, while whole food sources provide a broader range of nutrients and benefits.

Regarding collagen produced by fibroblasts in skin, I used to culture fibroblasts on matrices for skin replacement therapy. I saw that vit C and hyaluronic acid made the fibroblasts produce collagen strands. Vit c alone would do it, but Vit c and HA was better. So now I take vit c and HA as supplements. Whatever anyone ever says, I always believe what I’ve seen with my own two eyes. Xx

@@eddiegrant58 we used 'synthetic' in the lab. I use supplements that don't have aspartame (Holland and Barrett 1000mg, after food and take HA separately). Vit C is heat labile and anything pasteurised will have degraded the vit C (e.g. tubs of orange juice, they always add ascorbate in afterwards). Nutrients can degrade from natural sources quickly with storage etc. Dont be worried about taking synthetic.

We have a lot of natural collagen in our diet. I also add in mixed bovine & marinecollagen at times, & chicken bone broth. I use under the recommended amount, as for me it does occasionally cause pain if I over do it. I understand hydroxyproline converts to oxalic acid, so it could be oxalate precipitation.

I drink pots of coffee a day. I take multi collagen1235 and 10 because I have venous insufficiency from when I broke my spine and had no way to put my feet up for 19 days until I got a lift chair. At 60 I have a hard, hard time walking, but I force myself to do it every day. In fact, I do all the yard work and maintenance. I think collagen helped with the venous stasis at least a little. I'm not much on beef, but I do eat it. Sometimes I grind our beef into burger meat. I only eat it ground. I eat chicken breasts. mostly boiled with Greek seasoning. I have collagen pills stuck in my throat right now. They're not washing down with coffee. Dang. You have some interesting advice. I tend to listen to fit people when considering nutritional needs. You don't look like a 20 something. They can recommend anything and make it sound good because they haven't been through life, yet. Haha.

I have noticed huge benefits of collagen (orgain/vital proteins brand) and have gone through 7-10 bottles past year. I am on IF and im taking aaaall my supplements at the same time:
    - vitamin C
    - Vit E
    - multivit with minerals
    - Biotin with zinc and selenium
    - vit D3 with K2
    - Omega 3
    - collagen
I only take them after a meal so since there is scientific evidence that supplements are better absorbed with food.

@@kedabro1957 zinc and copper work against each other. Taking zinc without copper will deplete your copper stores and vice versa. Take copper in the morning and take zinc with lunch or dinner.

Production starts to dwindle in our mid-to-late 20s and early 30s and we start losing 1% of our collagen per year after that. By 40, collagen drops dramatically, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles, skin sagging, skin drying and loss of energy.

3:00 Why do you say coffee causes wrinkles? Where is the science behind that? In the best scenario, coffee being an antioxydant "might" reduce wrinkles or skin aging?

    • @staciagray1282
      @staciagray1282 Před měsícem

Caffeine reduces collagen synthesis in human cultured skin fibroblasts. Low collagen can result in more wrinkles. We start losing collagen in our 20's. By the time we are 80, we have very little collagen left.

Marine is better also because usually it has lower molecular weight, and that's very important in terms of absorption, and that's why there's so many studies showing that collagen don't do anything, because they probably don't do it with a low molecular weight collagen, and low molecular weight can be any type, animal, sea, etc.. as long as they did it the correct way. Best
