    Thanks for your "Tag der offenen Tür", walking tru your lovely house, almost every room. And whilst some being curious about Jack's room or the great view you spare for exactly privacy reasons, everyone should respect that and value that you share so much. The ups and downs of the building process. It's so nice and that you overcame the hustle, after Ashton's PhD, you're on the right track. Enjoy free castle Freiburg!

    Congratulations on the new house, I'm very happy when it's finally finished after all the work and turned out the way you imagined it. As long as you feel comfortable in it, everything is fine. If someone has the chance to set up their home the way they imagine it, then these opportunities should also be used. In any case, it looks very interesting and is something different. Anyway, I wish you a lot of joy and good times with it. You definitely deserve it.

Love the neutral colour scheme, natural timber look, white and black, allows for artwork to be really shown off. I really respect you respecting Jack’s and your privacy. Never apologise for that! Congratulations, Dr. Ashton and Jonathan! At the time in your life with a child, a single family home is perfect and you’ve struck the balance between American creature comforts and European cosiness. Its been a long wait for sure to get your dream home but judging by the reveal, its definitely been all worth it. Jack will love growing up there. In closing, I would say the hardest part was picturing what it looked like when it was being built, how it would all come together the way you guys pictured it, but those worries in the end came to naught with how well put together and inviting your home looks. This is a true labour of love for you guys and while you will do many more amazing things in your life, nothng will matter as much as the satisfaction and joy of having your first home! Again, heartfelt greetings!

    I was waiting what the "most American things ever" would turn out to be when you said it in the intro, and was surprised that it was the second fridge! I'm Austrian, and I know several families who have one of those. Traditionally, you'd just have an extra freezer, but these days more people prefer a second fridge/freezer combination. None of the families I know who have a second fridge in the storeroom or cellar consider it an American thing.

    • @haukenot3345
      @haukenot3345 Před rokem +1

      Exactly what I was thinking. In my experience, it's often not even a concious decision. You move into a new place or decide to upgrade your kitchen, and you end up with a spare fridge. You start to use it as a back-up because you find it convenient, and then you just keep it as long as it doesn't overly clutter your place. Nowadays, more people are re-selling or donating their old kitchen gadgets, but in my grandparents' generation, that didn't really happen that much, apart from passing them on within the family.

    12:54 I gasped when I saw your wardrobe: If I'm not mistaken, that's two Ikea wardrobes, which brings back memories for us. During the pandemic, we got one wardrobe from Ikea while they were just starting to have supply chain issues, and it felt like a Scandinavian scavenger hunt to go to different stores just to get the pieces we wanted. Then all the stress of drilling into the walls in a condo with metal studs, to balancing the units and then putting them together while still working our jobs during the day. We went slow and it took 5 weeks (partially apathy, partially part supplies).
    All this to say that if you got *both* done in 3-5 days, you did a fabulous job!!!
    This is just one seemingly "small" aspect of what you would have had to contend with.

Anyway, it’s all beautiful, and I’m jealous, because buying a house in Germany seems like such a far off dream for me.

    Thank you very much for showing us your fantastic house! I like very much what you have made out of it, especially the lighting. I love the lamp over the table in the dining area and I think it's the same design like the lamp over the mirror in the lower bathroom. I also like the black fittings in the upper bathroom and the black sink in the kitchen.
    The colours and furniture in the entire house are so well planned and nice looking, without a doubt you could make a lot of money of planning those things for other people. Another highlight is the garage! Great choice of tools and wall mounts. The only thing I would have done different is the colour of the walls. I would choose grey, because one day you will hit the wall with a wheel of your bike.

Heating system, floor heating, thermostat, per room individually... Faucets and water, water always circulating to prevent growth of bacteria... Kitchen, all bottom drawers, no cabinets on the bottom, quality if the kitchen, induction oven, dishwasher and fridge in kitchen design... Insulation of the house, how thick are the walls, concrete or stone, how thick is insulation...

    You have a lovely home. I like the idea of a white couch in a small room. Our house has a combination living/dining space, and our couch is dark gray. It does make the space look somewhat smaller. We are planning to install ceiling fans in all of our rooms as well. We are even considering a small air conditioner system in our guest room, which is in the attic. Our temperatures here in Upper Harz are not that bad by Oklahoma standards, but the attic does get a bit warm. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

    The house looks fabulous! It always amazes me that people put so much thought and effort into furnishing their houses. I hate shopping for furniture and so on (actually, I hate shopping in general!), and I tend to be very minimalistic and functional.
    When I decided to move six years ago after living in the same flat for 22 years, there were two things from the previous flat that I said had to be in the new one: underfloor heating and an additional half-bath. What a godsend that is!
    A third thing, actually. Since I had in the meantime purchased a car, the new place had to have an assigned parking space in a garage of some sort. That was indeed wise. For a number of reasons, street parking in my neighborhood has become almost impossible. When I came back from London last week, I took a car-sharing vehicle to come home from the airport. It took me longer to find a parking space than it did to drive here from the airport!
    Enjoy your new home!

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  Před rokem +1

      Totally get it with the parking space. We did carsharing for 3 years, but prior to that Jonathan had an older car that we kept around. But since we lived in Old Town in an apartment without dedicated parking, we were constantly having to hunt for a free space amongst all of the tourists. Half of the time we didn't even use the car because we didn't want to have to deal with finding a new parking spot when we came back. 😂

    At 16:47 I see again the love you and Ashton puts in your home. Even the little edge (2cm) above the floor, you've painted. 👍 I love that.

    What I really wanted to know about building the new house, was a lot more detail about the construction techniques. You mentioned poured walls, but somehow also we’ll insulated. What of the infrastructure - plumbing, wiring, heating (which I assume is radiant in-floor). What materials used are different than US homes? How do you alter or add infrastructure, if you need to add a plumbing fixture or additional electrical outlets, should the need arise? And a cost comparison with American home construction per square unit area would be nice. Also, what climate are you located in? Are temperature or precipitation extreme compared to your US place of origin? Are you allowed to perform work on your house, or are you required to hire licensed contractors?

    The view, I believe you unseen, that it's great, a mountain peak that glows in the morning sun, a hill with a few prominent trees, actually it doesn't really take much that it's just a beautiful sight.
    You are also absolutely right about the toilets, one for the whole house is not enough, one for each floor is definitely appropriate.
    Only the mound of earth in front of the living room window would worry me, if it rains really hard, the mound of earth could end up in the living room, I hope there's another wall there.

  • @leDespicable

    I think the main reason ceiling fans are not that common in Germany is the fact that German summers are a lot shorter than in most parts of the US. Most Germans simply don't see the need to install something permanently that'll only be used for its intended purpose a few weeks a year.
    Especially when you consider the fact that Germans consider light fixtures part of the furniture, which they'll absolutely take with them when moving and which they want to fit their personal tastes.
    Many consider ceiling fans to be ugly, especially the cheaper models seldomly look nice, and then there's the fact that the light they emit also often isn't the greatest since their main purpose is moving air, not having mood lighting (at least with cheaper models).
    In short, most Germans would rather install a nice-looking light fixture that produces a nice fitting tone of light for the purpose of the room it is installed in, and then pull out a desk or floor-standing fan from the basement for the few weeks a year it actually gets hot.

    • @lysan1445
      @lysan1445 Před rokem

      I totally agree. In addition, I realized even at a young age that you get better used to the heat if you don't live - or work - in climatized spaces. So it doesn't feel troubling anymore after a short time. In my childhood, my grandparents also taught us some literally "cool" tricks to keep the house cooler than outside without spending a dime on it. Of course, not too cool, so you can stay used to the heat. But it was refreshing enough. I had to work once for weeks at an excavation site in Israel at 42°C. It wasn't a problem at all, but of course, with hard physical work, you have to drink a lot of water, and I mean, a lot - at least 6 litres a day. I didn't think I could do that, but it was a real need and no problem. In our time and age, we also have to cut energy consumption to preserve nature, but right now, also because Russia cut our gas.

    I'm looking forward to every video of yours and you guys never disappoint! The quality of each video with the shots slowly moving to create interesting and capturing moments, is amazing!
    The house very much looks like a modern German house I would say. The only difference would be the ceiling fans, which me and my wife have but almost never use 😉.
    The whole house is a master piece! It's such a great combination and how each room "flows" into the next feels natural.
    Regarding your question: How do you feel about being able to fix things in your house that may break down? We've got hit by disaster after one another. Leaking pipes, hornet nests leaking through our ceiling, broken heating. I could fix some on my own but I genuinely feel like it gets more and more difficult, even though I'm an engineer myself and should know how all of it works (one never does 😊).
    You can be so happy to have such a wonderful house that you planned yourself! It's a great achievement!

Since I'm as you at the 1st stage, I think u did a pretty good job. I talked to a lot of people, that build a new home (wir installieren PV-Anlagen) and even the stage II guys told me about things, they would never do again.
