I dated a girl in the 1980's who would never let me come to her home where she lived with her parents. Finally the time came and then I understood why she kept me away!!! Red velvet crushed velvet sofa with plastic covering. Two gold and red lamps on either side of sofa that were life sized elves!!! ( And they were Jewish!! ) And the best!! A 'painting' over sofa of Greece that lit up!!!!! ( I felt like I really was in Greece ...on Acid!! ) I can never un see that.
Thank you for this. I bought a new house last summer and it was decorated "industrial farmhouse" with almost 200 signs purchased from Walmart and Dollar General (they didn't remove the stickers) throughout. It was hideous. Thousands of nail holes to fill after we moved in. I expect it to take 5 years to complete renovating it to Georgian country home style.
Iâm not convinced your proposed renovation is an improvement
How about Word Art that says "ALCOHOLIC", hung above an empty booze bottle collection? đ€Ł
đđ
Since it ties into an existing home feature, Iâd say itâs a great move.
How did you see inside my house??
@@GradKat đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł

Fake fruit just brought me back. I got in trouble at a friendâs house for taking the fake fruit from the fruit bowl and putting it into my friendâs play kitchen. Their parents got mad because they literally couldnât tell the fruit apart. đ I remembered, so I helped it get back to normal. I remember as a kid being confused as to why they had toy fruit in their kitchen fruit bowl. It was an honest mistake as the fruit looked EXACTLY the same. Hence, why they were unable to tell them apart. đ
that's a riot!
Plastic fruit is ugly but antique stone fruit is pretty neat. I collect antiques and Iâve seen nice collections of 200 year old stone fruit in a basket or bowl. I donât have any yet because they are expensive, but I can dream.
I remember chewing on fake grapes! Awesome!!
I was born and raised in NYC. Everyone had plastic covers on their furniture, and terrible pictures on the walls. I was shocked when I went to the University of Georgia and was invited to a roommate's family home, that they didn't have plastic covers, they didn't even know what I was talking about. and the pictures on their walls were of family. It was truly a cultural shock, which was wonderful.
Iâm just here for Reynardâs Live Laugh Love rage
I hate those damn things...
Whenever I enter a place with word art that commands me to do something, I'm so tempted to sneak in a sign: "No! Fuck you!" & tape it up underneath.
My âHell, Yes!â framed wall art next to my bed helps get me up in the morning. It seriously does. â€
Your sense of humor really shined on this one lolol! Great suggestions and ideas for comfy cozy living.
You are so right! I appreciate that you are also talking to the person who doesn't have much to spend/needs to shop at Ikea for now. I also appreciate that you tell people to ignore trends.
There's nothing wrong with IKEA if you stick to classic styles, it's the trendy stuff that ends up looking dated and cheap.
@@gaynorprice-jones1826 Totally agree. Ikea kitchens have a good reputation.
But Reynard, how else are our guests supposed to know that we Live Love Laugh in this house? đ„Č
Just do those things. Is it necessary to show to your guests that you Live, love and laugh with those framed signs?đ
It was clearly sarcasm. â@@benjamuli

This tickled me!!!!!
I did a half no-no with a very large interim poster. I hope when I can afford it to purchase some actual art for a large open wall space in my living room. But for now I purchased a colorful, fun Mid-century poster 4'X5'. I could not afford to frame such a large, temporary poster. SO I secured the poster to the wall with double stick tape. Then had a friend cut me 4 pieces of 1X3 pine, painted them a matte black (the room has some black accents as well as the poster) and then just screwed them into the wall with black screws around the poster, butted up, not mitered. Very inexpensive but imo not tooo bad until I get my permanent piece there and can save up and frame it properly. It'll just be a matter of spackling 10 small screw holes and putting up something I really love.
That's a creative way to have it "framed". Definitely much better than having it bare naked on wall.
@@reynardlowell You are so kind to reply in a positive way. I appreciate that about your channel, you know your stuff yet never talk unkindly to folks. I'm happy to be one of your 303K subs.
I agree with everything! The empty liquor bottles on top of kitchen cabinets: It's amazing how many people actually do that. I see a lot of it on realtor sites.
I've never understood it because it does look juvenile, like "Look at all the alcohol I've consumed!". What an odd decorating statement to make.
Added custom verticals to a patio window wall. The three individual sections have been great to control light and privacy. Also the feature shares space with the kitchen and doesn't hold onto smells.
Re:lettering as decor. I did see a beautifully lettered poem at the top of a wall, wrapping around the room. I donât remember the details (author, phrase) but it was beautifully done and very meaningful to the owner/resident. But it was certainly not generic or purchased from Hobby Lobby.
Wow your expression and intonation are so much better in this video! Great work! There is a real sense of your passion here that as a long time watcher i really appreciate it. Congrats!
Although Empty bottles are great as long as they are curated. ie sake bottles
I agree with almost all your takes. I have a large set of vertical blinds in my living room and ive actually grown really fond of them. The way that they let in light in columns is honestly kind of beautiful and cool and it gives me that sort of geometric modernist feel. They definitely do not work for small window spaces though.
I think vertical blinds are easier to clean than horizontal ones.
I wouldn't purposely use either, but verticals can flatter a space.
Yeah I do agree that the light and shadows from vertical blinds can be really nice. Iâve seen many that are done quite with thicker or heavier materials, but Iâm personally not fond of the plasticky ones, or as you mentioned, in smaller windows.
We have them too in Florida. They allow a lot of control over the amount and direction of light that comes in. None of the other options have that level of functionality.
I find my vertical blinds really useful for deflecting reflected light from a white wall outside.
Congratulations on 300k you deserve it!đđđ
âI donât need anyone telling me where to take a dumpâ đ epic line! Great video! đđŒ
Great suggestions, i agree with most, except on vertical blinds which given the current options I still find the most pleasing to me. đ
Vertical blinds create a beautiful space for my eyes. In my opinion, it is also a very smart way to let light in.
@@jingkun72I love vertical blinds and they look good and they look very sleek
Yes, and if you need privacy they are economical solution.
Plastic wrapped sofas....the height of elegance in Mediterranean homes from the 1970s to 2000 in Australia. My Greek relatives had their beautiful sofas covered this way. Terrible to sit on. I never understood why my uncles, aunts and cousins couldn't enjoy their homes.
My aunt and uncle had a living room covered in plastic. Couch, lamps, even a runner so no one would step on the carpet. Of course, no one was allowed in that room, so there was zero chance of anything getting dirty. I never understood it.
@@LeCrenn Oooo I'd forgotten about the plastic runners! My grandparents had those in the hallway and from the front door through the living room!
I guess they did save wear and tear on the wall-to-wall carpeting, but they weren't comfortable to walk on for sure.
Oh, your comment made me laugh and brought back some bad memories đ! My Greek Aunt (Thea) also had a red velvet lounge suite covered in plastic and she had plastic runners over the carpet all the way down the hallway which we would always trip onđ! Thatâs one decor âideaâ that Iâm glad to see go, for sure!,đ
Enjoyed all of your comments and follow your ideas in my home, except I have a small bowl of realistic fake fruit on my kitchen island which actually looks very nice!! In my home office, I do display small signs that motivate me. I agree that these don't belong everywhere in the house, but in my case the home office is my special place and photos and quotes on display make me happy.
If l see one more sign with a cutesy, insirational message...
Some of the things I love in my home are 1) my parentâs large vertical Chinese scrolls. They illustrate how tall the ceilings are. đ 2) The 90 inch sheer curtains from Ikea are cheap and airy. 3) Japanese curtains over my bookcases to camouflage clutter. 4)đȘŽ plants. 5) Mirrors to bounce off light.
I love those scrolls. I collect Qing dynasty art, porcelain and antiques and I have one scroll that I got for free. You have to be careful with them because there are so many fakes out there today.
Just got a wonderfully preserved set of chairs thanks to plastic wrap. Removed them and now the chairs are perfect and so beautiful!

Okay Reynard .
I gotcha .
Did the chimney here beautifully in faux brick wall paper, and it wasn't easy , AND there is two posters without frames on wall in bedroom, and world map in living room; both without frames .
(And, Girl With Pearl Ear-ring also in foyer, so that it three prints needing frames).
So I will switcheroo the brick wall paper on the chimney to the real brick tiles , and will get frames for those three prints when I am in Warrnambool next Reynard , get it sorted out .
Because you're right .
And I knew it too.
But , sometimes , I need to hear it from someone else in authority, like yourself that knows more about the topic, to give me the nudge I need to do the necessary refinements.
You're super shrewd smart, in your field, I respect and listen to you , seriously thankyou .
Plus have subscribed to your channel for that reason Reynard as love your work.

Thank you. Always good reminders and information
Will you do a series of creating Mid Century style in each room and in different home styles?
We use self-adhesive plastic wrap only on the spots where the cat sharpens its claws to prevent furniture damage
I agree with you, Reynard, and I smiled a lot watching this video.
Good morning - this video popped up at random and I really enjoyed it and agreed with every you mentioned. May I add another? Giant clocks. You know the kind I mean. Why? Why? Why?
Cos my eyesight is poor and I can no longer see the real clock!! A boon to blind old bats lol

Spot on advice! Agree 100%!
The only bathroom sign I will get is for my sister and brother-in-lawâs Air B&B which is

I unfortunately have vertical blinds. I donât like vertical blinds but I felt I had no choice. I bought a condo 3 years ago which needed new window treatments. The living room has a balcony with a sliding door. The 2 bedrooms got pleated shades w/ sheer panels for light & privacy. The living room balcony got vertical shades for light, privacy & ease of access. I donât get a lot of natural light. I face north. I also face another building where I can see the units directly across from me. I wouldâve preferred sheer curtains but I wanted as much light as possible.
Great you just confirmed my opinion of vertical blinds!
@reynardlowell please address what few have: hang art in powder rm at eye height when standing or sitting, or no art in toilet rm? Decor for FP hearth in hot weather? Decor for LR with kids and toys? How to keep DR table from being drop zone?
Totally agree with all of these and I especially hate vertical blinds. They always make me think of a doctorâs surgery and not something that I want in my home đ
100% agree with all you've saidâ€â€
Great advise.
Ive just found your channel..so pleased i did!! I love the caring way you explain that some decor is just horrible! New subscriber here â€
No, no NO! If you love your decor, itâs beautiful. Only you live in your home. Not some âexpertâ telling you your decor is horrible.
I live in Britain and I never in my life (Iâm 75) heard of anybody wrapping their furniture in plastic! Never.
Not the bowl with plastic fruit!!!!đ€Łđ€ŁTotal nightmare indeed!
you don't have to frame, if you love the urbqn/industrial look you can mount posters on board or on an mdf box of the same dimensions. It 's not going to preserve the poster as well as a frame but it beats tape or press-stick
Excelente vĂdeo! Muito instrutivo!
I'm here for the live laugh love rant...chef's kiss!
my grandmother got her King Louis XV set UPHOLSTERED with the plastic layer over the fabric. considering the resale value of this stuff with the gold leaf restored, she might not be crazy. but it's crazy đ
I agree with you on pretty much all the points :)
I agree with all those mistakes that you mentioned and in particular one with wrapped furniture. One similar thing people do in Europe is when they put throw blankets to protect the sofa(they cover the entire sofa with the blanket)đźand hides the design of it.
I have pets and consider throws to be essential for shared spaces. The idea of humans and animals lounging on fabric that can't be washed really bothers me.
I take them off ( and isolate the critters) when entertaining.
@@YSLRD I agree to do that when you have pets of course.
We have better performance fabrics and wet vacs now đđ»ââïž
@@thisuniquechica And better furniture covers as well.
Thereâs a fine line between a ârugâ and a âcarpetâ, in my view. In our house, the living room is pretty much a corridor between the front door and the kitchen. If we put down a really big rug (ie, a carpet) one side of it would be permanently filthy from people walking across it to access the kitchen. Whereas a small rug provides somewhere cosy for your feet if youâre sitting on the sofa, but allows access to the kitchen without having to step on the rug.
Can say I agree with everything you said.
Word decal. Yes! Now, does this cover labels on items that donât need one? Yes, you covered this, too. Thank-you!
So glad to see your channel grow over the last few years! Your tips were SO helpful when I was decorating my first apartment. Hello from America!
I like to hunt for vintage particular whiskey bottles in ceramic or glass and repurpose them by filling with new whiskey or brandy. I find them cute, but will not be in display unless I have guests. They are inside my bar cabinet. It is made with wavy glass so they create a nice effect against it ..
What's your opinion on 50mm slat Venetian blinds?
All very true.
There are spaces where small rugs make sense. I agree 100% about the rest.
As someone living in a small apartment I can't agree with you more! We don't have space for fake anything đ
Edit: unless it's a fake book that is actually a box, those are useful at least
Haha - excellent list. I'd also add very cheap faux plants and stems. Some of them look really bad.
My dinning room is carpeted and I wanted to put an extra area rug to keep it clean and looks more stylist, but ended up with an uneven floor surface. What should I do? đ
Great tips! What about fake plants? I know some people don't have a green thumb, but there are lots of plant varieties that are hardy ...
Lego plants were my solution :)
There's one behind him, the bonsai
I'd look for one that look realistic or have lots of movements, not those generic IKEA grass or obviously fake plants. Branches and arrangements are great too (I use plenty of these).
Budget orchids are great if you think of them as cut flowers. The blooms are long lasting with minimal care and cheap enough to be disposable when they go south. Also dried plants- to be replaced when the dust goes too far.
Ferns and pothos both thrive on very little care. As long as they are watered about once a week or so and given some natural light, they do well for first-time plant owners. My mother has had a pothos for almost 40 years! It is older than almost all of her kids, including me!
What about the outdoor space in which you can't see the plants for all the tacky signage and cutesy garden doodads?
Yes!đđ
Agree with all of these - ESPECIALLY the backwards books - HORRIBLE way to show people you don't read - but beg to differ on the rug under a dining table - makes pulling your chair in and out difficult, not to mention the constant vacuuming you would need to do for crumbs and such.
This. It's one of the biggest reasons I replaced my carpet with hard floors under the dining table. No rug is ever getting under my table ever again!
I absolutely hate signs (word art?) anywhere.
I'd be totally lost if I didn't have my 'EAT' sign in my kitchen....đ . Don't ask what ai have in my powder room... đ
âŠor in the bedroom đŹ
I really wish I could have rugs. But one of my cats has dedicated her life to the destruction and demise of rugs. đ
I grew up in a house with many vertical blinds, and i still hate them with all my heart. They didnt give privacy, but retained dust so viciously they gave my brother allergy attack. It was a really happy day when they were finally trown away
I really hate shower curtain drapes, the ones with the giant grommets.
Me too and I dislike them as drapes even more.
I prefer traditional pinch pleated drapes with good fullness and some weight.
What you haven't mentioned is the importance of empty space. I'd rather have a completely blank wall than a wall full of framed prints or tacky decals.. I didn't know wrapping furniture in plastic and using it was a thing..I'm 55 and I've never heard of that. My mum is the sort who spends good money on a quality sofa and then covers it immediately in a throw, which always looks like the decorators are in.
i have empty wine bottles that i have in a cabinet behind a closed door. i bought them at vineyards on my vacations, locally made wine. you cant see it behind a fluted glass door, hope that is better
I'm a minimalist and barely have any decorations in my house. Removing the excess makes the house look bigger. The plastic fruit was one of the first things to go.
Do you have to have a rug for the living room? I have nice hardwood floors and I have really been thinking about getting rid of my area rug because its a pain taking care of it and cleaning.
Personally I don't think it's a must, although it's helpful for zoning especially in open plan spaces or if there's lots of smaller pieces, and also to add texture and contrast.
@@reynardlowell Thank you! I feel more confident in my decision now. Thanks for all the great tips! đ
Youâll find that the acoustics will be really terrible without an area rug. Too many hard surfaces make a room noisy and cold b
@@missmayflower Oh, I didn't even think about that. I'm definitely going to have to test it out. Thanks!
â@@stacistaci6657 We recently replaced the carpet in the living room with hardwood flooring and went through the same thing. I didn't want to get a rug since didn't we just replace the carpet and now we're putting another one back?1! I want to see my beautiful new floors. But seriously the noise and echo is horrendous. The bare room with just the floors was like a warehouse. We brought the furniture in and it helped somewhat but we definitely needed an area rug under the sofas.
It's not just the noise though. Depending on the size of your lviing room and other rooms opening on to it, the floor can look really bare like a store or office. Mine is not very big but we do have a library/art studio on one end and the rug frames the living areas quite nicely. I'm planning to get a really comfy rug (smaller) for the library chair to zone that area as well.
The ikea frames bend over the time
It's crazy that you need to tell people this.
loved to see you smiling and laughing a bit in this vid đ these decor pieces are pretty ridiculous!!
What do you think of using a pair of rugs side by side to achieve the bigger size ? Ie two rugs of 3x4m instead one 6x4m or 3x8m?
Congrats on 300K. Well done đ
Hmm probably weird
Do you have a video of how to make real books look nice? I have 4 bookshelves in a row, that fit in a jut out in my living room. They are full of hard covered books
In all honesty, you can decorate anyway you like. Itâs your home and whatever brings you joy decorate with it.
I think people who wrap sofas nowadays do it for a particular reason, if you know what I mean.
Oh god, Iâm guilty of the empty liquor bottles as display art hahaha
Your rug comments were really helpful. Fake books? Oh my!
I prefer to live in a house which matches personality and call it home, rather than following all the trends as if I'm living in a display home with a fake life.
I really dislike gallery walls, but they are what you "should" do according to the design trend. A lot of what was mentioned in this video were trendy at one time.
I wouldn't say gallery wall is a "should". I personally prefer a single big artwork but always love to see a well curated gallery wall.
personally, im against framing anything but thats because it is the look im going for. however i want to point out that half the examples are not really representative of how you will hang posters, because 1. formats are wildly varied, meanwhile posters might tend to have a set size. 2. Some of the pics in those frames are "empty" to balance other ones, while a poster is independent so the way it is portrayed they are gonna look busy together.
People I know who have word art are unhappy and use them as mantras
Most of these I feel are ok in small amounts blended with other things, aside from that I agree with your points. Like a wall of liquor bottles screams I'm on parole or I fight people over dumb sh*t
That bottle of Hibiki Japanese Whiskey is about $500. That's one expensive display bottle!
Fake books??? Any book lovers nightmare đ
"Vertical blinds are just plain ugly." and "This is a hill I'm willing to die on." Hilarious!đ
so youâre saying i can get rid of the giant word âHOUSEâ painted on our garage door??
I have one "lets eat" sign.. đ
You didnât even have to add the plastic furniture! LOL! No one in 2024 should have that!!!
Geez I hated plastic wrapped furniture when I was a kid and still donât understand it. Do people still have it these days?
nope.
I remember either sliding off from sweating or leaving a layer of skin behind after it was ripped off like duct tape.
Yes. In SE Asia đ
Itâs easy to understand, itâs just protecting furnitures value
Me too my first visit to my aunt who lived in Canada had the plastic on chairs. I ask my sister who lived there why the plastic, she said it was because to keep it clean - I hated sitting on the chairs as it made so much noise I could wait to leave.
There a lots of trying hard lnterior decorators didnt go to school and loves the things you like to get rid that there favorite decorations in there house .Believe me !
What if the tenants face is actually ugly??
