Why Does No One Visit East Germany?
There is an old joke that says "more Germans have been to Mallorca than East Germany"... but why is that? The freedom of movement between the former East and West German states has been established for more than 30 years. So why do still so few international and German travelers visit East Germany today?

It is a universal fact that industrialized food is not healthy. It may not kill you immediately, but it is simply not healthy. It is a profit driven business and as such as the same problems as every other profit driven business. The great difference between the United States and Europe is probably more in the availability of alternatives. The rest depends on the consumers if you don’t take the time to value what you eat that’s your choice.

In Germany if you decide to go to a bar on the weekend which is more of a social place than a nasty place for dysfunctional people you take your 14 year old teenager with you. They can have a beer in your presence as long as they behave according to an (civilized!) adult environment. You don't teach them to drink but to respect the limits of consuming alcohol in public. When they are 16 they can buy a beer without their parents present. My mother used to make wine at home. She would always allow us to try the beautiful drink, but only a little bit. I never on my life had a big need for alcohol.

I am German living in the US. The US does not claim that all people are equal like Europe ,which is an illusion and is not and has never been true. Even in Germany where I grew up and lived for 40 years there were differences. I find it to be more truthful to allow people to live the way they want and then deal with that result. In the US where I live now for 36 years it is a clear cut difference. You want order, security and a civilized life you live with people who have the same expectation. It's a very normal psychological decision. Because the US is a big country with big open spaces that has never been a problem. If you don't like crime, disorder or dysfunction you simply stay out of those areas. It's easy enough.

Lived in US for a year. Amazing science at an amazing University, but very much in a bubble from all of the rest of the country. I love the natural scenery of the US, I love being a tourist in the big cities, but I cannot believe the problems that the US has with homelessness, drugs, gun violence, gang violence, medical treatment costs, inequalities when it comes to racial and financial aspects, and the fact that public transport is hilariously shit. But hey, at least the weather is good in California, you can Instacart yourself beer in the middle of the night, and Bitchin' Sauce is actually pretty bitchin'. I think American culture is stifled by the ignorance of socioeconomic issues surrounding money and wealth. It's like offering a helping hand to anyone is considered treason and unpatriotic because no one wants to admit that there is a need for help in "the land of the free and the home of the brave". The United States is culturally isolated from the rest of the world for no real reason other than patriotism.

I live in a small former coal mining town close to a large Western German city. There are a lot more "exotic" people nowadays, especially in the city. A lot more shops with foreign sounding names. At the Bushof groups of "youth" are hanging out all day. There used to be a bunch of nice shops next to the Bushof, like a small flower shop, a bakery ... Due to rising crime most of those shops have been standing empty for over a decade. One is now a sports betting place. The city was overall much nicer in the 90s. There are still nice areas. But only rich people can afford to live there. I never go to the city anymore unless I have to. I used to live there for a few years but moved back out and am a lot happier. I wouldn't want to live there now, especially not with small children.

When I visited Ellis Island I found it highly interesting how in an exhibition on the people who went through there, a surprisingly high number was listed as coming from "Austria". Which was perfectly correct, at the time. Most of those were of course from Galicia, one of the poorest parts of the Austrian monarchy back in the days and ethnically primarily populated by ethnic Poles and Ukraines (and nowadays part of Poland and Ukraine). I would assume that their anchestors are nowadays identifying as Polish American or Ukrainian American if anything but it shows how much things can change back "at home".

To stick to the house analogy when it comes to wealth: In the US, there are many big and wonderful houses, but every one of them is surrounded by countless homeless people. Yes, everybody has the chance to live in such a house, even if they weren't born in one, but the odds are way way way higher that you'll be the homeless person enviously looking at the house. And even if you live in the house, you are constantly afraid the homeless people will do something to you or your house. Meanwhile in Europe, the houses are smaller, more modest, but almost everyone lives in a house, even if it's a shabby one. As a result they don't have to envious or afraid of each other.

I am one of those having grown up and living in western Germany who has hardly ever visited the former east - except for Berlin that is. I only ever visited Dresden (back in 1991) and Wartburg in Thuringia. And I think that travel patterns actually have a lot to do with personal ties and family customs. Close relationships have been formed between West-Germans and their European neighbors over the decades after WW2 - through cultural and school exchange programs, trade and, yes, leisure travel. That is simply a result of politics, history and geography. Same is true for the German-American relationship. Tourism in Germany after the war was kick-started by American soldiers based here and their families. It is no coincidence that Rothenburg, Heidelberg or the Bavarian Alps are still popular destinations with visitors from the US and that more Americans have heard of those places than of Wernigerode, Dresden or Mecklenburg's lake district. Can't blame them.
