    I hope your new brand will be as successful as the last. This is giving off a completely new vibe and it's like a completely different channel. It's much less casual. For instance, I would not expect to see a pregnancy vlog on this channel where on the previous channel I would have. I think you are targeting a smaller audience now. More niche: people who are interested in data, as opposed to anecdotes. On the one hand this is self-restrictive (not a bad thing per se) while on the other hand being more directional. If that was your intent, you definitely succeeded. It is risky, as some people definitely subscribed to the black forest family for its casual nature and this is asking those people to re-evaluate their choice. I will stay subscribed! :)

    Nice Intro, Ashton. And your subjects are always interesting and presented in an amazing way.
    Concerning urban settlements you have a very interesting example nearby: Freiburg. It has received the status of a market place and town in 1120 and the same counts of Zähringen who had granted those rights have founded other towns eg. Villingen (part of Villingen-Schwenningen today) too. They triggered something like a wave of founding such towns in the late medieval and early new historical era.

      There are many more interesting things to do near Freiburg. The Kandel in Waldkirch is one of 5 witch mountains in Germany. The largest ancient roman bath north of the alps is located in badenweiler and parts from the neolithic period were found in sasbach am kaiserstuhl. In the upper Elztal-Prechtal/Triberg hemingway used to go fishing and much, much more. My own family history is also closely intertwined with the Schwabenstor and Martinstor in Freiburg and goes back more than 500 years.

    UK vs Europe vs Countries with Anglo-Saxon Cultures. There are some things that are done in UK and mainland Europe but not in NZ or America and some things that are done in NZ, UK and America but not on mainland Europe. A good example is standards of dress. I've seen a few people mention going late night shipping in there pyjamas in America an NZ but I've never heard of that in UK or mainland Europe. Also linguistically the UK uses holiday and trousers , the French say vacances and pantalon, and Americans say vacation and pants.

    Wealthy people live in nice parts of the city. I had always assumed that the wealthy were drawn to these parts because they were already nice places to live (good transport facilities, large parks, plenty of trees in the streets, museums and other cultural attractions, and absence of pollution). However, I glanced at some recent research that suggested that nice areas have usually been made nice because the wealthy are living there. The flip side could be that undesirable parts of town are ugly because the poor are living there. This deserves more attention.

    Have you done a session on taxation and the double taxation Americans face while living abroad?

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  Před 9 měsíci +8

      Hi there - Jonathan and I have touched on it in prior videos - but more, so indirectly. But it is worth mentioning that if you are living abroad as an expat (and not a member of the military or government) you are likely paying taxes in the country in which you reside. For example, we work in Germany for German companies. We are paid in Germany and pay taxes in Germany. However it is a common misconception that Americans in similar situations to us are double-taxed.
      The US is one of the few countries that requires citizens living abroad to FILE yearly taxes. That is true - but there is a big difference between filing the paperwork and actually paying money. The majority of American expats living overseas will qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Tax Exclusion.
      For tax year 2023, the maximum exclusion is $120,000 per person. If two individuals are married, and both work abroad and meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test, each one can choose the foreign earned income exclusion. Together, they can exclude as much as $240,000 for the 2023 tax year.
      In short: if you make less than 120,000 as a single person or 240,000 as a couple, you don't pay taxes to the American government, only in the country in which those funds were earned.

    • @dmbfantony

      @@TypeAshton Thank you for the clarification!

    • @apveening
      @apveening Před 9 měsíci

      @@TypeAshton You overlook (or just don't mention) some facts:
      1) Getting the paperwork done for filing with the IRS already costs money and isn't deductible
      2) The exclusion for income other than through work is a lot lower, which really bites after retirement, especially as the IRS doesn't recognize European style retirement plans.
      There are more, but those two alone are already enough for most to renounce USA citizenship as soon as practical.

    Looking forward to more content. Anything you make is usually interesting. Maybe you could look into what’s different and what’s similar between how the US is structured and the EU. EU is not a country but there are still some similarities with the Us even if EU countries typically have more independence than US states. For example I don’t think a US state can vote to leave like UK left EU. And what would a EU look like that was like the US with a federal EU. Can the current EU be described as a confederation? Was the confederate states of America during the civil war more similar to the EU than how the Us is now with a strong federal government? This is something I’ve been thinking of lately and I can’t find that many videos about it.

    • @TypeAshton

    • @johnclements6614
      @johnclements6614 Před 9 měsíci +1

      There is now a fairly large amount of regret about the vote to leave here in the UK. I am not sure if there is a desire to rejoin yet or if the EU would accept us if we asked.
      Trust in politicians has fallen. In the past people would disagree with a politician but believe that they meant what they said. The US appears to be further along in this trend than us and German better, but that view is purely subjective on my part. I wonder how this will effect the quality of government in the future and how this will effect the wealth etc of nations.

      @wertywerrtyson5529 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@johnclements6614 Much of it is nostalgia yes but there is also statistics that show certain things getting worse. We are more wealthy, have more stuff and live longer but on the other hand at least going by my country the housing shortage is the worst it’s been since around 1950, trains run late to a much bigger extent than a few decades ago. It takes longer and longer to get healthcare with some operations having queues of years. Violent crime has increased dramatically with shootings and bombings very rare 20 years ago to being a daily occurrence. Inflation has been higher than in 30 years while interest rates have been higher in the past it hurts more now because housing prices went up astronomically in the last 20 years. An apartment in Stockholm has increased in price by about 1000% in 25 years. While wages have roughly doubled in that time meaning the actual cost of homes are about 5x higher now. Some say this is because we lost our socialism and some claim we need to get rid of it all and have a pure market economy to solve the problems. Inequality has increased dramatically from being one of the world most equal countries to having higher wealth inequality than most countries. More billionaires per capita than the US but the poor have not received nearly the same benefits from the liberation of the economy that’s taken place since I was a kid in the early 90s.

    Hi Ashton,
    I am a German and very interested in town structures that support a community best. My romantic ideal is a small village, where everybody can find the goods and tools they need most in small shops and many people (not all of them) can work from home via IT-connection.
    Also I favor energy saving multi-generation houses with a family and perhaps a grandparent living in a small unit within this house.
    I learned about the model projects of Prince Charles (when he still was prince !) for ideal communities in Wales (15 minute max. distance to all necessary shops and offices).
    Would You be interested in making videos about components and structures of new villages or city quarters to best support the community idea ?

      i, too, find this interesting. Except, i live in the US now, and 15 minutes sounds good, but leave it to the americans to mess it up still. I live in a nice older neighborhood, 2 acre properties, heavily wooded, no through traffic, etc. My nearest grocery store is 0.8 miles form my house, that is 15 minutes on foot. sounds great, right? except, there are no sidewalks! anywhere! I get out of my neighborhood, and i am on a 4 lane divided highway with a 50 mph speed limit. And, yes, we like speeding here in georgia! nobody in their right mind would be traipsing around the bushes and ditches to the grocery store on foot. There are also restaurants, drugstores, dry cleaners, pet store, post office, bank, etc. except you have to actually cross the highway.... there is a crosswalk with a light every couple of miles.... so we drive! everywhere! Infrastructure matters, build some effing sidewalks! And i do live in Georgias most populous county. we can afford sidewalks, i think....

Although I even studied anglistics and taught English at least at the evening school (VHS) and in the lower classes of the Gymnasium I often have difficulties in understanding you. Your English is on such a high academic level that - even with subtitles - I sometimes gave it up. So many special terms, so many abbreviations! I would like to know more about the zoning of American cities and the consequences from that. I guess it may be traced back to the Northwest Ordinance and the plans they they had for gridded towns of sixteen (?) blocks each with the schoolhouse and probably communally important real estate and lands located centrally between them, but wonder when actual zoning began and why there is no movement to have better integrated communities that are more pedestrian-friendly in modern town building. You know, where you have easy access to basic shopping, church, playgrounds, etc. from everyone in the vicinity. Is it all tax-related? As far as I understand, local business taxes finance local schools, etc.
    It also seems somewhat ludicrous to me that people who want to live their lives more ecologically sound (i.e. NOT own a car, be able to get to work or to buy necessities) seem to be forced to live in cities, where they will find a better infrastructure and public transport, when these people would probably prefer to live in the country, there they could then actually garden their own food (as not every city neighborhood has options for communal gardens for example), etc. It all seems to counter-productive and counter-intuitive…

    I like your vids, but it’s coming off as DESPERATE to fit in--you left the US, fine, countless others left my country of Germany to head to America, they’ve moved on. You make us look weak for always thinking about America, a message to all Europeans who want Americans to notice them, they won’t, no matter how often you bring them up. They’re on their own world and don’t care for our pouting, it’s so pathetic.
