  • We've been discussing the (potential) opportunity for dual citizenship in Germany for our American family. And part of the requirements to get German citizenship was to pass the German Naturalization Test (Einbürgerungstest).
    The American Naturalization Test is notoriously difficult and it has been studied and reported that most US Citizens would fail. So we were curious, how well would we fair with the German citizenship test? Would you pass?

    Though I am not completely fluent in German I got most of the questions right because from 1977 when I was in Germany in the US Army I bought and read many German newspapers and magazines mainly to feed my interest in German politics. If you read newspapers such as Die Zeit or Das Frankfurter Allgemeine or a magazine such as Der Spiegel or Focus you would have had the information to answer more of these questions correctly. Viewing TV news such as Das Tagesschau might also have helped you achieve a better result. Best of luck if you decide to take this test for real in the future.

I have a German wife that I met here when I first came here on Holiday. I have Dual Nationality and two Passports, I got my Germann Nationality when the UK decided to leave the EU.I did not have to take any tests at all because I had been living here so long and it took only about a couple of months. Before I applied I did all the probable questions online with my wife,( About 300) and I scored better than she did, and she is born and bred German, Then I did not need to take the test, "what a Bummer" Oh and one big difference here to the US is the size of the parking bays in the US to Germany. I dare say I speak your language a lot better than you speak mine and I know a lot more about your country than you do about Germany. And I never lived in the US for more than 2 months. My Italian was a lot better than your German, after about three weeks living there and no prior classes. I hope you make your citizen test. It is nevertheless ironic that as an Austrian I could never become German without giving up my Austrian passport.. I would have been able to answer all the questions, and I would have been before I actually went there 25 years ago. And without studying. Hi, everyone,
    I find ist great how enthusiastic you are about learning the German language and also taking the naturalization test. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and take it easy. With regard to the naturalization test, I can only say that your wrong answers are difficult to solve due to the ambiguous nature of the question, especially for people who are not yet well versed in the German language and culture.
    I work on the preparation of examination tasks for vocational training for all of Germany. So I can confidently tell you that if we asked our questions like this, many german examinees would not be able to answer them correctly.
    In particular, the one question with the answer "Rosenmontag" already shows that no thought was given here. As German citizens, we would dismiss such a question as wrong. Because we know that the carnival season in Germany begins on November 11th at 11:11 a.m. of the year and lasts until „Aschermittwoch“ (which is usually in February) of the following year. As such, „Rosenmontag“ is just one of the days when people wear costumes, masks, etc.
    So the question should have been better:
    Which of the listed days falls within the period when people wear masks and costumes?
    or
    On which day of the carnival season do the parades mainly take place in Germany?
    This question would have been a little clearer that way.
    Let's see if the parades will take place this year, then you can get an impression of it for yourself. The biggest parades take place on „Rosenmontag“ in the „Ruhrgebiet“ (Cologne, Mainz, etc.).
    With that in mind, wish you all the best.

    • @jurgens.3964
      @jurgens.3964 Před 2 lety +1

      You are right. And even worse: Rosenmontag (Monday of roses) is the most important day of Carnival in regions like Köln or Mainz. In the region in the south, close to lake Constance (for those who are not that familiar with our Georgraphy: This is big lake in the south surrounded by Switzerland, Austria and Germany), they would not even say "Karnval" (which is the German word for carnival), they would say "Fasnet", and from what I experienced during my childhood there, thursday before Rosenmontag is even more important ("Schmotziger Donnerstag" in local accent, the meaning is "greasy thursday", and its importance reaches down to Italy where they use the same term just in Italian language ("Giovedi grasso").

    I have taken both the test questions of the US citizenship test and the German Einbürgerungstest. What I found interesting is how many of the questions were literally the same. Makes sense though, because while the political systems are quite different in detail, they are also very similar when it comes to the basics. Things like separation of powers are a thing in both countries, even if it is interpreted slightly differnt. Freedom of expression is a thing both in the US and Germany but doesn't mean exactly the same. There are differences between the 1. amendment and Art. 5 of the Grundgesetz.

    • @harryhirsch3637
      @harryhirsch3637 Před 2 lety +5

      When the Grundgesetz (german constitution) was created in 1948/49 the western allies of WWII had a lot of influence because they wanted to make sure something like a nazi-state would never exist again. That's why there are so many similarities between the german and the american constitution but of course there are also differences.

    • @LtdNulty
      @LtdNulty Před 2 lety +2

      Also i think, when they designed the german Einbürgerungstest, they might have taken the american one (and probably those of other countries) as a model. If i remember correctly, it has been implemented not more than 20 years ago when other countries, like the us or canada already had similar methods to naturalize immigrants.

    • @kayneahnung3661
      @kayneahnung3661 Před rokem +1

      @@maudeboggins9834 the german constitution is based on the one of the "Weimarer Republik" before Hitler came to power - which in turn was based on the .... US constitution (as well as the paulskirchen-Verfassung, but thats a different part of history). They DID change aspects of those "parents" of the current german constitution where they learned that they are exploitable by dictators - thats for example why there is a 5% hurdle - the very reason Hitler came to power was not because he got the majority of votes, but because the majority of votes was distributed among many many many very small parties sometimes with a single seat in the parliament. As far as I know Hitler never got much more than 30% of the votes. Thats why todays constitution not only ensures that you have to have at least 5% of the votes to get a seat in parliament (and that means that the parliament is not as fragmented as it was before Hitler) but also that the Government has to have at least 50% of the votes.

    You're doing great, this reminds me of a situation my mom or dad described when they had the test for their hunting permit. Two young men in their course didn't really speak high german since they were to inherit their family farm in a rural area where everyone spoke lower german, so the only high german they experienced was school. They needed the questions translated into lower german to understand the grammar and content and passed with flying colors, they knew most of the stuff before the course anyway. So the language barrier is a pretty powerful aspect whenever you come into contact with official german and you'e not used to it. Translate the questions and terms for yourself.
    I actually noticed myself how studying political science affected my german since you're mainly reading english texts and don't need the german terms as much or never connected the english and german term, so I'm amazing at explaing it in english and have to translate it into german.
    Also connect the history with each other to learn history better, eg the 5% hurdle for parliament actually is rooted in the failure of of the first constitution in upholding democracy since not being able to build stable majorities with every small party in parliament getting a seat that got enough votes, which led to a lot of elections and allowed the president to essentially govern for long periods of time and that president made Hitler Chancellor. So now you have to have three direct seats or 5% or 2% in some elections to get in and the president is a representative function, also there's a section of the constitution with basic rights der Grundrechtekatalog.

    I think both your German is better than you think, but if I can give you some advice from personal experience, I think you would both benefit from studying German phonetics and its rules in a bit more detail. I had phonetics as a course in my short stint at a language studies/interpreters school, and it's crazy what difference correct pronunciation makes in being more confident in speaking a language and seeming more fluent to native speakers.
    And luckily the rules for German pronunciation are very consistent with rare exceptions, unlike English where it's the other way around 😂

So for example in „Schiff“ and „Stuttgart“ the i and u are pronounced short and not like the i in „tief“ or the u in „Schuh“😅
      Just a random fact that maybe could help if you didn’t know yet😅

    • @neffisback9729

      The short i in german is nearly identical to your i in "stiff" where as the long i (or ie) in "tief" would be similar to your ie in "thieves.
      For the short u in german you could take as an example your word "could" or "should". Your ou in these words are nearly identical to the short u in "Bus" or "Stuttgart". The long form of u in for example "Schuh" or "Tuch" is similar to your double o in "noodle" or "Boots"😅
      No idea if that explanaition helps you but maybe it's easier to remember or so...😅

    Hello,
    I like your style of the videos you make. I actually tried the tests myself today. I am born in Germany, Niedersachsen, but left at age 23 and now live in the Netherlands for more that 30 years already.
    I found it interesting to see what the questions would be like. I got 95% correct with the 33 question tests, had about 2 questions wrong while not paying attention to the question and 2 that I did not know. The 310 question test was harder. I got about 12-15 wrong answers. I think that foreign people may have it much harder. I think even Dutch people who live close to Germany will fail a lot of the questions. That is because if you had not spend time in Germany you would not know especially many regulatory institutions. I think best chance for correct answers non German language persons would be given from Dutch, Belgian or Danish persons. Non Europeans - especially non western culture countries will find the 310 questionair hard - in my oppinion.
    Well, I am glad you like it in my 'alter Heimat' - stay strong. Greetings.

Allerdings ist das Sprachniveau nicht ohne, hier wird schon vertieftes Sprachverständnis auf Niveau B3 und höher erwartet. It will definitely help your german skills.
    I think the real challenge of the naturalization test is that your german skills need to be good enough to understand the questions and possible answers correctly. That's why Germans will probably never fail in this test even if they get some answers wrong it will never be more than 50% wrong answers for them. I have tried it before and got everything correct but i am someone who is interested in politics. As a state official I have to evaluate the tests occasionally. I always find it interesting when people spontaneously try it. The questions also vary from test to test and some are always added and others are omitted. Memorizing is not a good option. :P
    Question 10 is a tough one. You are allowed to make false statements (answer A), but not in every case. This is why A is wrong and B is right.
    For Question 14: "Bundes" is Federal Republic and "Landes" is State. It is the Federal Republic of Germany but it is the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. After that there are regions (for Freiburg this is also Freiburg since it does not have a region but it is surounded by the region called Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald) and after those is local like city or community. Voting age is 18 at federal repulic and for federal state but 16 for regional and local.
    16 is also a tough one since forced labour is nor allowed as a sanction itself but inmates have to work in prison and are kind of forced to do so. But they get paid to do so.

    Thanks, that was fun, I got all of them. As for GSL/DaF classes, just commit to at least an hour a day of practice of some sort. Even if this is broken up into listening to the radio or colleagues on your coffee breaks or commutes, or whatnot, I know a young working family has little free time.
    I first began with the language in 1991 in high school, and still today learn something new every day. Even now I am only B2 as far as active speaking is concerned--I can by now read almost anything, and understand most of what is said to me--but then I never had the good fortune you have of being able to live in Germany, not just visit and basically keep studying as a hobby to appreciate German film and literature, mostly. Somehow I ended up in Canada instead, which also has a multiple choice citizenship test designed to prove to you how little you know about Canadian history and geography etc.

      Thank you for the tips.
      We are now about 50 days in to spending an average of 1 hour each day taking German courses. Plus vocabulary and talking after that. We will for sure be keeping up a minimum of 1 hour a day for the forseeable future.

    Once you jump over the language hurdle and familiarize yourselves with the uncommon german terms, you‘ll find the test to be very easy itself! I studied this in a span of two weeks (like 30 minutes each day) and got 33/33. On day of the test itself, a lot were even finishing up within 20 minutes of getting the questions. :)

    Hi guys, first of all my highest respect for both you diving much deeper into german language and taking so many classes in such a short time frame. Seems to me its like learning german intravenously. The naturalization test wasnt that hard for me as a german native, but might be tough for those whose vocabulary is not sufficient. I am sure you have add the words you didnt know before to your list and will remeber once. Hope you fully understood the wrong answers as well. Its the first time to hear you both speaking german in longer sequences. It sounds good already and ausbaufähig/expandable. Waiting for your first video totally in german. Just joking now. If you pronounce the following toungue twistling sentence, I will vote for your german naturalization: In Bacharach am Achenbach da machten mich die Wachteln wach(as fast as you can). I wish you a nice week and stay healthy.

      Now THAT is a good tongue twister! Thank you! Very similar to the common English on.... Shelly sells seashells by the sea shore. 😉 Always fun, thank you so much and we are really glad you enjoyed the video.

I am sure in let say 4-5 years you will way back of Jack's german languages skills. So good to start by now when you want to catch up. I can really imagine your faces when he comes back from Kindergarten and school with new words you may be cant find in a dictionary :-D

    Meine Frau hatte 33/33 Punkten erreicht. Fakt ist, dass nicht viele Menschen, die in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen sind, diesen Test bestehen würden. Da könnte man ja drüber nachdenken, die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft auch abzuerkennen 😀
