Yep, and I have the bank balance to prove it 😂😳. The interesting thing is I got my son using a safety razor from the beginning, and he has zero interest in the hobby. For him it’s just a tool and it’s the only thing he knows (he’s 17). He uses one razor/ soap/ balm etc. and replaces things only when they run out. So he is genuinely getting cheaper (and better) shaves than his mates who use cartridges. Over his lifetime he’ll save $$$! Unlike his dad 😂

Hahahaha. I’m already there! Can’t believe how addicted I’ve become in such a short time. I’ve been on the lazy, cartridge razor program for years. In Vietnam 69-70 we had poor DE options and lousy results. But now, Wow, I’m all in…{thanks Ohio Shaves!!!!). Just finished my 4th shave with the T2, and just ordered the Henson Ti22/medium as a second razor.

I found you about three weeks ago. I bought a mild Henson first, then I bought some TOBS shaving cream, a rigid bowl and collapsible bowl, Simpson T3 brush, TOBS pre-shave oil, a bottle of Thayers, three classic after shaves (Brut, Pinaud Clubman, Old Spice), an alum block and four 100 packs of blades (RK, Derby, Astra, Gillette Platinum). All of this has changed my life. I look forward to shaving every day. I love the experience and feel like I just left the barber shop every time I shave. I’m so glad the Henson Facebook Ad sent me down the rabbit hole of wet shaving and brought me to your page. Cheers!

  • @Rood67

    My initial setup:
    - $19.99 for a Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars endorsed piece of metal at Bed Bath and Beyond
    - This came with five blades
    - $15’ish for a Wilkerson shave mug with puck
    - $4.99 for a “shed-o-matic” brush the grocery store had
*So, for around $50.00 USD I was forever changed.*
I knew I needed better, so after researching blades, I bought a 100 count sleeve of Feather (yellow) blades. These turned this cheap razor into something usable.
After this, I started trying better soaps. The absolute best was Bull and Pen, but I didn’t know how to lather a real soap yet, so I hated it. If I knew then he would go out of business I would have bought everything he had in stock. Alas, ignorance bit me in the behind. I moved to The Soap Exchange for a few tubs, but right now, I’m really enjoying Trade Winds tubs made with tallow. Most of their tubs are around $16.00, lather well, and stay slick. A $50.00 soap may be good, but why pay $35.00 for brand recognition and advertising?
I got a few cheap brushes from Amazon that had zero lift. Again, ignorance biting me. I finally got a Simpson Trafalgar Synthetic for around $30.00 and it’s a great brush. I don’t need silver tip badger in titanium and gold handle with diamonds chips around the knot.
My mother-in-law gave me one of my fathers-in-laws slant razors for Christmas; which was my first major upgrade. And I found slants to be the best for my insanely coarse whiskers. Then my wife bought me a Viking Emperor Augustus adjustable for a birthday a few years ago, and setting 3 seems to be about perfect for me. So I use the slant in the shower with goat soap, and the adjustable at the sink with Trade Winds Sandalwood or Citrus Spice.
So in nearly nine years, I have less than a few hundred dollars invested in the best shaves I ever got in my half century plus life.

The easiest razor in my opinion is the MUHLE 89 or 89 Twist, it's mild and extremely efficient. More importantly is building a healthy lather and making sure your skin stays moist. I recommend using a spray bottle on your face before each pass. And finish with an Alum block, Toner and then a balm! Don't forget to print a face chart from Razor Emporium and map the direction of you hair growth. Time to shave and enjoy the hobby!

This is probably the best video you've put out there for someone thinking about switching to traditional safety razor shaving. Your experiences are my experiences. Besides technique and a good safety razor, face prep and a post-shave routine of alum, witch hazel, and balm make all the difference. Fortunately, after a couple of years I climbed out of the rabbit hole. Basically, I ran out of space to store all of my shaving "stuff." Kudos on this video.

I will try the credit card and see how that goes. Once a long time ago I got my wife to try and describe it after I let it grow out about 5 days. Poor her. My beard is vicious. Do you think the Rockwell 6S/6C is a reasonable consideration for a really coarse beard that grows in circles in several spots and multidirectional same area 55% of my face. Someone has suggested I might consider OC. No traditional DE besides a Slim from around 68.
Nothing slices through my beard in the toughest areas 😢 Twig Thorn struggles too much, Leaf OG does well if I use slot 2 and 3 in tough areas. Would an OC help by not trying to cut at the toughest areas at the same time? Is there a milder or moderate OC.
I'm all over the place because I am also wondering if a slant would serve me well. I use Med Preps and just snagged some Permasharps but didn't notice a huge difference. I do think I need to jump on board with a tallow based soap for extra slickness and great cushion.
A few quick bullet points would be appreciated.

#ohioshaves giveaway: I totally agree. I started this journey as a birthday gift from my wife a couple years ago. I am now 15 razors in, have around 5 - 6 soaps, and three brushes, three different blades and a bowl. Since the switch, my face does look better but on average it takes me a good 10 - 12 minutes to shave (probably because I have hard soaps versus creams). I think I got out of the rabbit hole of buying new stuff as I am running out of space in the medicine cabinet for them, and the rising cost of things. Me personally I am usually half-awake out of the shower in the morning and want something where I do not have to think. I have the daily driver razors, that I usually let my daughter pick out the night before and keep the Rockwell 6S should I not shave for a while so that it can cut through the beard growth. Also weight, while I prefer SS or titanium, those have gotten a little out of my price range (especially titanium). If I am getting a good shave from a razor from a different material, I do not see the point in getting them in another material especially when they are 2 to 5 times the price of the original. The thorn and twig are good examples. Have both of them, use different blades in each but when I saw the stainless steel version was coming out, didn't see a reason to get it.
Definitely start with the beginner razors or a mercur 34c as it is forgiving. Also don't be afraid of razors with pivoting head. The benefit of the cost savings is on the blades themselves versus the cartridges. If you like one with a pivoting head because you can't get the angle down and press too hard, so be it. The head will help correct the angle for you as a cartridge razor did. Also don't chase BBS shaves. Do a 3-pass shave and if you get a BBS shave great, if not it is pretty damn fine shave, and no one will notice. For people with sensitive skin, the more passes, the more chance of irritation. After the shave definitely Alumn block, thayers and/ or a balm. Avoid the alcoholic ones unless you like that burn. Get a blade variety pack and try different blades. Some blades work better in some razors then others as it has to do with the blade gap and geometry of the head. Once you find something you like, then go experiment with other razors.

Only 4 months in and it took me that long to just accept 2 passes will get me to good enough. I still have to touch up my jaw area but I have stopped with trying a 3rd pass. My skin has thanked me immensely the last couple of weeks. That is a great tip about not chasing BBS because most won't be able to tell the difference between BBS and DFS.

  • @gradybird3336

Why did I wait so long? Easy to answer. I bought the multi-blade hype from the very beginning. I started shaving about the time multi-blade stuff came out. I just didn't know any better. I started DE shaving last winter, at 67 years old, and will never look back. Better late than never, I guess.
And the soaps are so vastly superior too. I still keep an aerosol foam can in my vacation gear. It's like smearing my face with clay or peanut butter after using quality shaving soap.

I went deep into it, and have tried so many razors. I guess I can say, at least I know with confidence what razors I like the best because I only use a few of them frequently. Great video, and all valid points. I came back to safety razors about 4 years ago. I'm actually old enough to have begun shaving with a Gillette Super Speed as a teenager and switched to the Gillette Trac II in 1971 when it was introduced as the best thing since sliced bread (wrong!). I am now retired, so the time factor is not as critical as it used to be. The word I use to describe traditional wet shaving is therapeutic. I never in my wildest dreams would have ever thought that shaving could actually be enjoyable and something to look forward to every day. Keep on spreading the gospel!

To your 5 points as I think we have a similar safety razor/wet shave journey (though you are much further along than me).
1: Technique: I'm doing my best to hone it but there is one part of my face that I seriously struggle with...around the jaw. That's the one location I still can't get the angle right on. But instead of frustration I now see it as a challenge to get right.
2: Product: Shaving soap and brush has been a life changer for me. I'm using dr. squash aloe vera I have left over as a preshave and nightly face wash and it has helped me. I have noticed that depending on the cream either a bowl or face works better. I'm still having to tell myself 'just a little water don't dunk' when adding water to the brush to load the brush and face lather. As for the Alum Block, I am honestly appreciative of it to stop those nicks. The one thing I've noticed with an alum block is it stops those silent weepers that want to pool up after the shave. I also am surprised how little pressure is needed to stop those weepers as well. As for Thayers, I'll use it twice a day even on days I don't shave just to keep my face freshened up after a quick face wash. As for after shave, the Nivea has worked well for me very well and will be looking to add a variety of after shave balms (I'm eyeing the PAA jelly's). And it's nice to know once you feel the razor tugging a little you can dispose and not feel guilty about the replacement cost.
3: Time: Something I didn't realize I needed until I started this journey but for a different reason. I'm by and large a night shaver and the whole process has been a huge help in decompressing from life's events and mentally resetting. The level of stress has significantly gone down since, more so in the last 30 days since it's clicked with me and I honestly look forward to it. As for the face mapping. I do north to south and then eye to nose above the jaw line and about 7 to 2 below the jaw line
5: Rabbit Hole: This has been the most 'da what' since I started this journey. I have enjoyed learning about other products and finding out which ones work best for me...and it's more than I ever thought. And it's something I can see myself adding to my collection to give away as gifts to help them in their journey. My initial investment was about the same, but now I look forward to treating myself to a new product. The other good thing about the rabbit hole is with all the tech out there now, one will find a razor and blade for thee and if it isn't for me that's okay to because something else works for me better but we both have the same enjoyment.
Fun introductory video for those wanting to get into wet shaving.

Yeah man, we've all been down the rabbit hole , and we like it 😁
As for reasons why so many guys wait so long before making a switch to safety razors , i would say time spent cuz everyone wants 2min shaves nowadays , even if that means razor burn and bumps , and also agressive marketing from Gillette and other cartridge giants , i think i never saw commercial on tv about safety razors.
    Great video as always 👊

#ohioshaves giveaway: I started this journey about 6, 7 months ago and I must say I'm much happier. I look forward to shaving even though it takes me longer. When recently buying a good shaving soap it's astonishing how much of difference just that single purchase made. I can use my Henson ++ and 2c with no problem now and it is just a great experience all over. I bought a lot of things in bulk like my razor blades and a big block of soap. I do want to buy other razors but I'll do that when I'm out of college.

I wish I would've made the switch in college. I would've saved a ton of money by now. Great choice and razors

@@OhioShaves yes all thanks to you. It's nice to find content that you can relate to because we have more or less of the same problems when it comes to skin sensitivity. That's why I chose those 2 to start with. Beginner friendly and not too aggressive. Thanks for all the tips. Can't wait to see what you have coming in the future.

While the variety of razors/brushes/soaps available plays a huge part in the enjoyment of wet shaving, new shavers always need to have a budget in mind and not exceed what they can easily afford. It’s easy to fall down the ‘rabbit hole’ but you need to be careful…
Great video and thanks for the giveaway.

    Why switch in my case?
I never had ingrown hair or irritation 🤷🏻‍♂️ and I simply don't buy the claim that cutting the hair slightly UNDER the skin level will deliver a LESS smooth shave than the DE cut AT skin level.
If cost is the only advantage left for me, then why switch? A hundred dollars more a year are worth the greater convenience, for me.
It would be different if the DE shave were ACTUALLY smoother than the cartridge, but I simply don't buy that, sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️
