  • What I still consider to be the best horror movie ever made, The Exorcist, arrives on 4K UHD disc in its 50th year. This is the latest in a long line of home movie releases of this title which began in 1980 with the first Super 8 400ft reel release. In this video I take a look at both including that original release running through an Elmo GS1200 Super 8 projector in our home cinema.
    The 4K disc is excellent and highly recommended. My opinion of the image quality is that it is too good for this film and I explain why I think that. The original mono soundtrack is included but there is a new Dolby Atmos track which although it's pretty amazing it does distract me at times owing to many of the sound effects being re-worked or changed. Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1. There are two versions of the film each on their own 4K disc - the original theatrical version and a so-called 'extended director's cut' which I had a quick look at but did not like what I saw. Changes have adversely affected the film and this is confirmed by William Friedkin in an extra feature on the second 'extended cut' Blu-ray who explains why he agreed to create this longer version of the film. I mention the prevalence of film grain owing to much of The Exorcist taking place in dark sets or at night and this does result in variable grain structures and particularly when subtitles have been optically inserted which exacerbates this further. There is one scene I did not mention where there is a facial close-up in the dark and something odd happens with the film grain which is on the move. I do not know if this was a deliberate effect or whether it is the result of the scanning process which interprets film grain incorrectly sometimes. It hardly spoils the overall disc which is almost 35mm film-like quality for a current cost of just £20. The Blu-rays aren't of quite the same high standard so once you've seen the 4K you won't ever want to run the Blu-ray again.
    This 4K was released in the UK on 18th September 2023 and I purchased mine from HMV for £19.99 which seems pretty good value given there are four discs included in the pack.
    Also featured in this video are the new Blu-ray releases of the Shudder series 1 to 3 of Creepshow. I'm still watching these but so far they're all excellent and in my opinion better than the original two Creepshow films upon which they are based. Sound and image (1.85:1) are the best of Blu-ray quality. If you enjoy anthology horror films or great movies such as Halloween then you should love these Creepshow series. The 'Creep' is at his best and tops and tails each opening, closing and link between the two stories in each episode. £29.99 per series and it's released 25th September 2023.
    The Exorcist mass-hysteria documentary made in 1974 as mentioned in this video can be seen here: • Video

    In 1983, I watched the 10th anniversary rerelease at a midnight showing. That was my first full viewing of this masterpiece. I was sixteen at the time. Great memory. To this day, it’s not only my favorite horror film, it’s one of my favorite films from any genre. I can’t wait to get the collectors 4k edition.
    Now I’m fifty-six and getting tickets for the Oct 1st fiftieth anniversary rerelease at a local theater.

      The trouble is that these days it's only going to be a video projection in a cinema so a lot of the realism of the 35mm will be lost. But hopefully the big screen effect and maybe a load of people who haven't seen it before will make it another memorable experience. Have a great time. Send us a post card! John.

      Wow! I’m almost the same age and saw it in 1983 for the first time also. There was a nationwide re-release, not just midnight shows. And of course it would have been 35mm in those days. I was horrified and exhilarated. I got to watch it again the following week.

      Great to see comments from people who saw it in the 80’s re-release, there was also another cinema re-release of it in 1990/91 alas I was still too young to see it in the cinema even then, I had read the novel when I was sixteen and then finally got to see it on video courtesy of my cousin who had managed to get the first VHS tape release from a video shop back in 1981 before the Video Recordings Act came into effect and James Ferman told all us Brits NO! You cannot have The Exorcist on video anymore!

    The Iraq scenes of The Exorcist were always my favorite. I really need to pick up this 4k. I, too, only have the old cardboard Warner DVD. Interestingly, when working at a cinema in Houston, TX, I met Bill Friedkin when he was in town for a sporting event. He came to our theater to watch "The Stepford Wives." He was surprised that I recognized him in person (I didn't think it was strange, being a film fanatic). I managed to run upstairs, get a poster of "The Hunted" (one of his later films) and had him sign it. I have it framed in my screening room. Great as usual, John.

      @@axisandallies79 The opening of The Sorcerer is at odds with the rest of the film. It gives the impression you're about to see a globe trotting, action adventure crime story and then it morphs into The Wages of Fear. If it had have opened up with the characters in that South American location without the audience being told their background and how they came to end up there then it would have been even more powerful to watch than it already was. That was the mistake with that film but that's just my opinion. I think William Friedkin was attempting to distance his version of the film from the earlier French work of art and that was how the error came about. I have the Blu-ray so I don't suppose i'll be getting the 4K when it arrives. I hope it's another top-notch release though and it sells well. I might get the Criterion of After Hours as I've had a number of people tell me it's one of their favourites. I had a lot of similar comments for The Sorcerer and that was why I got the Blu-ray. Not so these days given most are not able to screen 35mm and give us that convincing, natural imagery that a movie like this demands. For just £20 though the quality of this new 4K release is astounding. It wouldn't be a "movie collector" review unless John pulls out the super 8. Unfortunately The Exorcist doesn't have that shock factor anymore because we've seen it so many times. I sometimes feel like Beetlejuice when he says "I've seen the exorcist 167 tines and it keeps getting funnier every time I see it". But I still enjoy it every time. And after all, thats what its all about. You guys in PAL territory are lucky to get the original poster with Father Merin on the cover. Over in NTSC land, we got a wierd colored picture of Regan's face. The Creepshows are excellent as well. They really capture the fun, and feel of the movies. Anyway, great review as always!

      Thank you Frank. It is always fun to include a bit of home movie history when it includes the original Super 8 release because most people never realized that market existed and tend to think that the whole movies at home industry began with VHS tape. With regard to the inlay in the USA for this new 4K, someone in WB over there made the wrong choice but it's only a cover and once it's on the shelf it's not going to matter much. I've had quite a few posts from people disappointed that they don't get all the extras on the USA release either but i've pointed out that the Blu-rays in the UK pack have been available for years and they have the extras not the 4K's. A few pounds will find them second hand over here so it's probably the same in America. And most of the extras were on the DVD anyway so you're not missing much at all.
      We watched episode 4 of Creepshow series 1 last night which wasn't as good as the other four we've watched so far but it was still good fun. That was on our telly this time which could be why it didn't work so well.

      The 4K is more vibrant than the Blu-ray Pete but I don't know if that's how the original 35mm master prints for premiere houses looked at the end of 1973 and through 1974. I've got too used to the more muted look applied to the Super 8 prints but that may well be misleading. The spider walk was interesting as an outtake when I saw it as a deleted scene on the DVD years ago but I could see then that it didn't work. The big problem now is that it's obviously not Linda Blair but perhaps most people are shocked by it and don't notice. I don't know why blood was spewing out of her mouth though because that did not make sense to me. It was fun to see The Exorcist looking so pristine. Who ever would have thunk it could look like this and for us to all purchase it and keep it for £20? I don't think your missing anything by not having the 4K though as the Blu-ray is good enough for this film. Actually, Blu-ray is good enough for most films now that I think about it.

    I’m with you John, that The Exorcist is a movie we have all experienced in a rough and grainy version and that lends itself to the documentary feel of the film. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the same- I wouldn’t want to see that in HD- it was meant to be a brutal and raw experience.

      First time we ran The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was to check the hire print in the afternoon and there was quite a lot of light creeping into the room we screened it in (about 8 feet wide even back then in about 1980). None of us thought it was very scary. Then we all watched it at night with the room being pitch black and that was an entirely different kettle of fish. That one was 16mm and looked horrible but it worked. The Exorcist wasn't the best looking 35mm I ever saw but it's possible the master prints would have resembled this 4K disc much more closely. It's impossible to know today and probably also impossible to ever hope an unfaded master print will ever turn up to check it against. One of the post 1982 low fade stock re-release prints is probably the best we could ever hope for and that might have looked a bit different to the originals. John.

      Afternoon Clark. Yes, I have quite a personal history with The Exorcist. I do know the film too well though so I'm probably not the best person to judge the new 4K even though I do appreciate the work that went into creating it and making the film look so pristine. It couldn't have been easy with all those dimly lit set shots and the opticals to insert captions a number of times early on. No doubt a lot of other people will be bemoaning the work and blaming the transfer or other mastering work but as I said, it couldn't have been easy.
      I do seem to have got this video done quite quickly. I certainly didn't rush it. Wrote the notes while watching the disc on Monday night, recorded the bits to camera between about 11am and 12am, put the Super 8 up and got those shots sometime after that and then cut it down before getting all the cutaway shots to try to make it more interesting. I had to ditch quite a bit of me blathering on as the video was getting too long but the only important thing was that I said the Blu-rays are as good as the 4K's so you'll never want to watch those again after you've seen the 4K.

      I think the film grain has been reined in as usual but it's often still obvious and particularly so when captions or subtitles are on the screen. It varies though and that's what I'd expect with a film that had so much shot in the dark or on dimly lit sets. It's impressive work to get it looking this good but too good perhaps. The film grain isn't so obvious on the Super 8 reels which is interesting given the diminutive scale. It's that scanning process that exacerbates it.

    Hi, john.
    Glad you enjoyed this new restoration. I also thought the detail levels were pretty incredible, and the depth of the colours and shadows were stunning.
    That being said, the dip in quality during the exorcism really threw me out of the film. The image looked incredibly smoothed over, and the new colour was smeared all over the shop (notice the way Father Merrin's hands turn the same bright red as his Bible).
    My personal theory, knowing Friedkin's penchant for revisionism, is that this scene was not sourced from the same material as the rest of the film, but from some previous master. Putting in the blu-ray from many years ago, the scene does look suspiciously similar in both versions, but with heavy noise reduction and colour that looked like a toddler with HDR crayons was allowed free-reign in the colouring suite.
    Besides this scene and the occasional anomaly, I thought this was a stunning release. The scene of Chris in the attic, in particular, has never worked better for me. With those jet-black shadows, the immersive new atmos track and the blinding light from the HDR during the jumpscare, it was a real stand-out moment for me.
    All the best

      It's possible that not all of the latest video version was a transfer from the original camera negative because it's unlikely that's survived unscathed enough to be used throughout. But the majority of the variable image quality will be down to light levels and the way the negative film stock responds. There was one brief facial close-up (can't remember exactly where now) where the film grain went mad and swirled around but I can't be sure why that was or if it was a deliberate low light choice at the time it was shot. Whatever the case it didn't give a great impression but overall this 4K does give a great impression.

    I really enjoyed this review John. It's an all time favourite movie of mine. I'm just deciding whether to splash out on the deluxe edition or not. I love the personal touch you add to your videos. It appears like me your love of movies stemed from your dad exactly like me. We matched many movies together over the years and always loved talking movies together. He passed away last year sadly and I miss him terribly. In some ways I find that your reviews keep him alive in some ways and that gives me great consolation at times. Thank you for that and keep up the great work! Regards Alan

      It's sad to hear you've lost your father Alan. I still have mine but he's an old crock now and losing his marbles to boot. Some days he's still surprisingly coherent but we usually have a good laugh when we talk on the phone. I quite often remind him about The Barringer Clinic and he remembers it well. My brother and I were both under age when we purchased those Super 8 reels but our parents had given up trying to stop us seeing all these horror movies long before then. Sometimes we'd be gone for hours and not told them we were going to try to sneak into the local cinema to see the latest 'X' certificate. We must have really put them through it. However, it was really a combination of elements that led me into a lifelong interest in fllms and moving images. My brother was a big influence and the game changer there was when he managed to get in to see Alien at the age of 16 and told me all about it when he got home. I looked 12 at the time so I stood no chance of seeing it. It started a bit of an obsession though.

      Don't take any notice about any image noise reduction Bob because they all have some applied owing to the scanning process Bob. Dimly lit sets create a coarser film grain structure that the scanning exacerbates and it means poorer definition anyway. If it was excessive during that sequence I didn't notice but I was looking at the grain structure throughout and the variability of it mainly owing to the light levels. People who don't understand film wouldn't be able to discuss that side of it.

    I like the fact that you also have the 1x400ft release on super 8. It's the copy I am looking for but one thing I have to ask you is the sound good on your 1x400ft version. Keep up the great work, I would like to see more of your super 8 films. Andrew.

      @moviecollector5920  Před 8 měsíci

      The sound is better on the 3x400ft but only because it was louder. I've re-recorded that now so that the levels don't change when the edited in sequences from the 400ft appear on screen. However, the 400ft print quality was a bit better than the slightly more dupey look of the 3x400ft. It's was always a bit of a minefield between different releases of the same film on Super 8 back then. The 400ft 18 minute edition is a more successful condensation of the film in my opinion but once they're cut together then that's the best Super 8 version. John.

    John, you are my go-to authority for reviews now...
    I've been obsessed (Possessed?) with The Exorcist, since I first saw it projected in our local working-men's club in 1979 (I was 14 years-old)!
    I've owned every release, in every commercial format; VHS, VCD (Eastern Import) Dvd and Blu ray...
    It's my birthday on Friday, so I'll probably blow my birthday-money on the 4K!
    I thought Friedkin's intro and words on 'The Version You've Never Seen' to be a lame justification, for a rather blatant cash-grab.
    Like you, I thought the 'Spider-Walk' was very interesting to see (Finally) but, overall, I thought it was a weaker film for the inclusion!
    The Exocrist 1973, theatrical-cut is a masterpiece of cinema for many reasons... The photography, the acting, the make-up and the tight editing!
    The glee on your face, when recounting the memory of cutting your Super 8 together with your Father, was palpable! Utterly charming.
    Thanks again John for another superb review 🙂

      @moviecollector5920  Před 8 měsíci +1

      You'll have to track down the Super 8 releases too though otherwise your home movie The Exorcist collection will not be complete! Then there will be a 16mm print to find too and how about a 35mm? Then again, the 4K is a cheaper alternative and I don't think you'll be disappointed. It is more colourful in places and sometimes it's too good so you can see how the low light has resulted in increased film grain and the resultant decrease in definition that goes with it. Others think that's something to do with the transfer or image noise reduction but I was looking at grain all the way through as I recall so I don't agree with them. It's a masterpiece of cinema and I agree with all you've said. As for the memories of putting that extended Super 8 version together more than 40 years ago, my old dad and I still talk about that to this day. He'll never forget the Barringer Clinic.
      By the way, that spider walk sequence - it's too obvious it's not Linda Blair and should never have been included for that reason alone.

      I think I'd have been scarred for life if I'd have seen this at nine years old Alex! I have seen it twice at the cinema (35mm) and I can remember the 1992 show I went to. It wasn't as colourful as this and neither is the Super 8 print but it is possible that original 35mm master prints for premiere houses had prints that looked like this or similar to this. Who can tell after almost 50 years? I enjoyed seeing the more vibrant colours at times but at other times it seemed to adversely affect the horror of it all. It's one of those films that needs to make you struggle to see into the darkest corners of the frame. The 4K is an impressive piece of work but it loses a bit of the mysterious nature of the film as most of us knew it previously. How it looked when originally released is open to question and it's unlikely I'll ever get an unfaded 1973/74 35mm master print to check it so it's possible the 4K is closer than what we've had before. I think The Exorcist has to be viewed in the context of being released at the end of 1973. Imagine just happening to fancy seeing a scary little flick at your local cinema back then and you didn't know exactly how compelling The Exorcist is. The realism of the proceedings too - that drew me in and made me think this sort of nonsense really could occur somewhere. In my defense I was young and Christianity still existed in quite a big way and had had some sort of influence on most of us at the time. Other films may have come along and been influenced or imitated what was started in The Exorcist but no other shocker or horror movie that I have seen has not only made the same impact but also been held in the same critical regard. I think it's still unique to this day despite the passage of time and all the attempts to surpass it.

I've never tried it myself but I will be giving it a go at some point. I don't think he's willing to continue with the repairs although i've paid over £100 so far on repairs and postage. He has said he's looking out for a working machine for me and offered to partially compensate my losses so far. That was over 2 weeks ago and i've heard nothing back from him yet. Are you familiar with this super 8 repair man? I will be contacting him before the end of the week but i'm not sure how to move forward with this situation. I transfer Super 8 using an aerial image system. This means the film is video recorded in mid air. Unlike scanning a film it's a photographic process and seems to result in more natural looking imagery at the end of the process. It does require a lot of setting up and fiddling to get it in focus all the way across and up and down the image.

      I think the original look of the film has been changed though. The colour looks vibrant and I don't think I ever saw it looking quite that vivid but without a 35mm Technicolor print to check it against - and I don't think they ever even existed - then there's no way to know for definite. Whether or not it's been too cleaned up in places is another possibility but I was looking at film grain all the way through so compromises do have to be made after a film has been scanned for a video release. It's magnificent work though whatever slight doubts I may have mooted.

Sometimes the changes aren't for the better. On the other hand there are probably releases that looked wrong through all their physical releases until a new scan was done. And even if the director says it should look this way, we still could like a different color scheme better. Hi John. I do enjoy watching your more laid back movie reviews. I also think that you do pretty good camera work on your own as well. I remember seeing THE EXORCIST in its original release in the theater. I remember it being intensely advertised on the radio and those commercials were pretty intense. Back then we had one movie theater in town and it was very nice with rocker seating and had a very large wide screen. It was called The Village Theater and saw some really great movies like Dr. Zhivago in there. THE EXORCIST was very impactful on the big screen and they had the sound really cranked up which added even more impact to the film. I remember when the credits started to roll at the end of the film one male viewer stood up and loudly declared 'THAT G*******M MOVIE!" LOL! Guess he didn't like being scared watching a film. Speaking of Dr. Zhivago I have been waiting for its 4k release as the blu-ray is quite bad. Many people have complained because the main character was such a shallow person in not being faithful to his wife but he was a man of many emotions being forced to witness many atrocities during the Russian Revolution and forced into service. The movie had a steller cast and was beautifully shot and I think deserves a 4k upgrade.

      The new soundtrack on The Exorcist is certainly effective and probably more so than it's ever been. But I'm a bit too used to the original sound effects so it rather distracted me on occasion. Not that it mattered thought because I practically know the film off by heart. Dr. Zhivago - I'm quite happy with the Blu-ray. Perhaps there is more than one version out there. It's an interesting film but frightening too because the sort of things we see in that film following the second revolution in 1917 are similar to some things that are going on over here now. Even more worrying is that these things seem to be accelerating and are likely going to get worse before they get better. Frightening times.

I've cleared it of course but so far it doesn't seem to have made it back into here. We are living through frightening times and I'm sure most would agree with that but it seems to be a risky conversation even when it's part of our discussion of the Blu-ray of Dr. Zhivago. Ridiculous but there we are. I don't think it's possible for the image quality of a Blu-ray to deteriorate so it's more likely to be a setup issue. Have another look at it and make sure it's being output from your playing in HD. Also make sure that someone didn't put a DVD in the Blu-ray case. I only looked at the Blu-ray in here about a year or so ago and for parts of it it was so good it could almost have passed for a transfer of a 70mm print. Other parts were not so good but I wouldn't say I was disappointed with it. I have the version in the HMV packaging with the silver top which I think is called the 'Premium Collection'.

    Hey there! this is the 25 year old Nolan birthday guy and just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your Oppenheimer video! So far that and Dunkirk is the only one’s I’ve seen on regular 70MM and was still jaw dropping to the point I went to see Oppenheimer the second time the final week of its showing at Portland Oregon. The B&W scenes are still living rent free in my head lol.
    As for The Exorcist, our theater is fortunate enough to have its own 35MM print and we even sometimes screen it with Linda Blair at attendance along with the print itself being autographed by her. I actually read the book first before watching the film so I prefer “the version you’ve never seen” especially how the stairs scene was basically word for word from the book itself for example so I can see why how it won best screenplay. But that doesn’t mean I don’t disagree with Friedkin’s cut and see what he/the studio were going for. I was lucky enough to get the 4K limited Bible edition so I’m waiting for that to come in and it’s been quite awhile since junior high I’ve seen the film itself. I’m hoping they’ll do another 35MM screening at some point so I can compare and everything so we shall see. I definitely recommend reading the book if you haven’t cause it’s just as amazing along with the connections with 3/Legion which I also HIGHLY recommended! 3/Legion is definitely the most misunderstood sequel even though it’s written and directed by Blatty himself. It has George C Scott of Doctor Strangelove/The Changeling and still gives out his all! It’s one of the rare cases too where I prefer the theatrical cut over the directors cut on that one since it does give more of an climatic ending while I debate myself time to time if I prefer it over the original… Your review for the film is excellent overall and hope to someday I can start collecting prints as well! I think Linda Blair was astounding in this film Chris. A performance like that in a film like this and that age is what made this film what it was. Everyone involved was brilliant but it would have all been for nothing without Linda Blair's performance. I've read the book twice by the way. Saw Exorcist III on first release and thought it was excellent. I will get it on disc one day and in fact I nearly did last Monday but thought I'd leave it a while longer so I could watch it in isolation and let it stand on its own. As for the Nolan films, one day you'll have to see them in genuine IMAX even though the 70mm prints are fabulous enough. The 15/70 prints are simply too amazing to describe without actually seeing them yourself. At least something of cinema as it used to be has survived and we can all get to see how good it once was with films shot and finished on film and distributed as 70mm and 15/70 master prints.

Plus it can also help my arguments too why Deckard isn’t a Replicant lol! And I love the fact it’s the closest film that knows how to balance CG and practical effects in two in two. I do suggest a rewatch too since I caught on up some subtle hints like for example when Deckard’s daughter was crying due to the fact it was her actual memory but resist to tell him etc. and there are short prequels along which wasn’t too bad. I honestly love the film as much as the original cause it still retains the question of what actions can make us human. Amazing slow burn Sci-Fi’s overall.

I've watched the Super 8 versions so many times that I know The Exorcist too well. I saw it twice on 35mm in cinemas but I wouldn't go back to see it video projected as somehow the reality is a little lost. That I think is what I meant. I doubt there are many people who know this film as well as I so I expect you'll just be impressed by the work that has been done. It is a dimly lit, set based film for much of it so don't expect TENET style image quality. At times it's comparatively poor but conversely at times it's pristine. Low light results in increased film grain which means poorer definition. My overall impression is an excellent 4K disc. I'm not sure of the sound re-working at times but no one else is likely to notice and will just enjoy the atmospheric effect it has.

    I was 9 years old in 73 when the film came out and I can remember that the TV 📺 ads scared the crap out of me. I do remember it aired for the first time I can remember in 79 when I was 15. Even though it was heavily edited , it still scared me enough where I slept that night with the lights on. Today I’ve seen it countless times and I just got tix to see this ultra 4 K version on the big screen on October 1. Very excited.

      A lot of us have some cherished memories about having the crap scared out of us the first time we saw The Exorcist at a young age. I'm not sure I've ever fully recovered but it's another of those historic films that made me who I am today so that's not an entirely bad thing. It was many years later when it got a television broadcast over here. Not sure how edited it would have been but I'm not sure the population of Britain would have appreciated some of the more choice language from Regan at her worst. Have a great time when you see it again. Watch out of the green bile being sprayed over the audience in feelaround! John.

Having just seen it all again I suspect I'll be dipping into those Super 8 reels a little more often again now. I had to go and get this on Monday so that was the best part of a day gone and then I recorded it yesterday and did most of the editing. I did look at the Blu-rays after the 4K's and they're very good but not as vibrant or involving as the 4K. Strangely that may work better for this film but having watched the 4K and enjoyed the colourful nature of it in places I don't think I'll ever want to bother with the Blu-ray or the DVD. The Super 8 will always get an airing though but that's got a personal history as well as meaning a film projector can be heard running when it's on which always makes a difference to the effect. Colour, density and sound are all better on the 4K compared to the Blu-ray but I'm not certain I was entirely happy with the new Dolby Atmos as some sound effects sounded different to me and I know them too well. I did consider putting it on the list to see what they say but I thought better of it after a while and decided I'd better behave myself. The Super 8 reels were always a bit dupey looking but I don't think they've faded much if at all. Maybe a bit red in places where they should be black but that could have been because the stock was flashed prior to processing to make it easier... and the print quality slightly poorer. I’m not optimistic about the new film Exorcist: Believer at all, (it looks like something of a cynical cash grab judging by the trailer) though I’ll probably drag myself into the cinema to watch it anyway 😂 There’s only one true sequel (and the only one that had a good reason to exist) to The Exorcist in my mind, and that is Blatty’s The Exorcist III, which is fantastic!

    Superb video, John!
    I love the Exorcist (theatrical cut only, not that "version you wish you would've never seen").
    But since I own the Super 8 400' reel, the LaserDisc, the DVD, and the Blu-ray your review actually makes me hesitant to buy the 4K. I always liked the grainy 70s film look. Not sure if I want this movie to look pristine and colorful 🤔🤔🤔
    I'll think about it...
    On another note (since it came up in the video), what's your opinion on splicing together Super 8 cutdowns that come on 2x400' or 3x400" reels? I have quite a few of those (not as many as you) and I always wonder how they would play if I didn't have to change reels every 16 minutes or so.
    On the other hand these are collectibles and every reel is housed in their original box. Which I would keep, of course. I am really torn on this subject and would love to know how you handle your cutdowns.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!
    Greetings from Germany!

      I have spliced some of the 2x400ft and 3x400ft cut downs together. The one that springs to mind is The Warriors which might actually be better than the complete feature. It's certainly better than the re[-hash that came out on Blu-ray a few years ago. I keep all the reels and leaders in the original boxes. It's easy to put them back if you ever want to but I put the 3x400ft of Black Sunday on an 800ft reel about 30 years ago and it's still on that reel. Makes it more enjoyable to watch all in one hit. But I do enjoy changing the reels too so it's not something I'd want to do all the time.
      The 4K is a little too perfect. I think it hurts the scary nature of the film but that's just my impression from watching it once. If I watch it again I may think it's the best way to ever see The Exorcist. I think I will always prefer that extra long version we spliced together on the 3x400ft reels. I did put that together on a 1200ft reel for a showing for a friend once but I put it all back afterwards. I like to have that one in those fabulous cases.
      John.

      Thanks for the reply!
      I guess I will try it on a few cutdowns that I would really like to watch in one go.
      The German 2x400' of Taxi Driver springs to mind. A project for the dark and rainy days ahead...
      Cheers!

    Hi John. I don't know if you've heard, but sadly Kenneth Branagh's third Poirot film, A Haunting In Venice, now out, is not shot on film this time. And no transfer to film either. I was looking forward to this, especially with the delayed last one only coming out last year, but sadly it seems Nile's Pandemic delayed release reduced interest and box office, resulting in less budget being offered this time.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I had seen the trailer and concluded it was shot on video so I probably won't bother unless I look at the 4K when it's out and it appeals. To be fair, Death on the Nile turned out to be a faux 70mm release as the prints were struck from the 4K video master file so that explains why it didn't look as good as it should have done. John.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 Před 8 měsíci

      @@moviecollector5920 It is a shame. I think even with the print to film being from a video source of a film source, it was an atmospheric experience, as you still have the grain on the projected film. Although as far as I'm aware The Odeon Leicester Square was the only cinema in the UK screening the 70mm print, so the incentives would be less. Nile only made 137 Million off a 100 Million dollar budget, so it's amazing it got a sequel. I think a large part of that is that the audience for the Poirot films tend to be older, and even in Feb 2022 a lot of that age range still wouldn't return to cinemas. Top Gun Maverick seemed to be the film that changed that, but it's long release no doubt helped.
      After his recent acting collaborations with Christopher Nolan I was hoping Branagh was in Nolan's camp of shooting on 65mm. Esp after using the same cameras Nolan had. And Branagh was one of the last people before Nolan to shoot on 65mm, with Hamlet (1996). I hope it's just reduced box office equals reduced expenditure that prevented Branagh this time, and he hasn't given up on film.

      One of the most historic films of all time so well done for seeing it in a cinema. What the film industry really needs to do is to get new 35mm prints back out there. For this and a lot of other films actually. That should really help to rejuvenate the dying cinema industry. Imagine going to see The Exorcist in the same format as scared the .... out of people all those years ago.

    Looking forward to getting this same 4K disc here in California. The US release had such a dismal cover artwork I paid the few extra dollars to import from the UK. Completely different era of filmmaking, but I know what you mean about a movie looking too clean - when The Matrix was released on 4K I was really taken aback by how much depth and color was on the 4K compared to the DVDs and Blu-rays I had seen so many times. With some of these films I'm not sure what is "accurate," but it's a good reminder to keep the older formats too.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The Matrix looked quite poor at the cinema Jason (general release print though) and I did think it looked pretty much the same on 4K. I'm now not so sure but at the cinema this was largely due to some of the computer effects shots being rushed to meet the release date, I think. Look at some of them closely on the 4K and assuming my eyes weren't watering at the time I'd estimate they're standard definition. I think that was why it gave me such a poor impression at the cinema but the green hue to the colour didn't help. The Exorcist on 4K is extremely colourful at times and I don't remember the 35mm prints I saw looking like that. It certainly doesn't look like it on Super 8 but that's not the best guide as it probably came from the 16mm reduction negative which was another generation or two down from the internegative.
      I will have to give The Matrix another chance soon because so many people have told me they think the 4K is excellent. I feel I must have had something set wrong when I watched that one.

      @@moviecollector5920 I appreciate the insights. I only saw the Matrix sequels in cinemas but not the original. I remember the dull looking DVD best because of how many times I viewed it. The 4K looks very vibrant but a little unusual in my opinion.
      It'll be nice to get my hands on this Exorcist disc - although it sounds like the color team may have done a little tinkering. Is the theatrical mono audio included on this UK edition? I generally opt for as close to the theatrical experience as possible.
