  • 4K UHD Blu-ray ray home video disc release of Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER reviewed. Pack contains the film on both a 4K disc and then a Blu-ray disc with a third disc containing around 3 hours of extra featurettes. The aspect ratio of this film varies between 2.20:1 and 1.78:1 dependent on whether the camera used was 70mm Super Panavision or IMAX 15/70. There were some Super 35 shots too apparently but I didn't spot them. Image quality throughout is exceptional as expected of anything shot 65mm but the IMAX shots are naturally the best of all. Sound is DTS HD 5.1. Don't turn it up too loud or an explosion may take you by surprise and blow the roof off your house.
OPPENHEIMER is certificate 15 primarily due to a couple of brief sex scenes and a few swear words.

With Nolan I always accept that the home viewing will be lesser than an IMAX showing of his stuff but he does such a great job with his home video releases. You can really tell he knows a lot of people will experience his films for the first time at home and wants that to be the best it can.
Nothing's gonna compare to seeing Oppenheimer on a 70+ foot IMAX screen though. Got a chance to see the rerelease at the beginning of November and it's hands down my favorite film of the year.
I can't wait to upgrade my home TV to get the full experience out of the 4K disc.

Why not see if you can keep your current telly and fit a video projector in somehow. We had to think about how to do it in here and that's why we had to purchase the diminutive UHZ50 video projector otherwise I'd bang my head on the way up the stairs! Projection is cinema and you get so much more out of a movie night-in that with a television. It's such good fun to fiddle too and you never stop fiddling with projection. A projector and a white wall is all that's needed.
      John.

Just finished watching it. And have to say Nolan has transferred a made for IMAX film to the small screen and managed to get as close to a big screen experience of any film I've ever seen. The tension in the Trinity scene was just as intense. I thought the explosion worked better on the small screen too. And that ending. Just as powerful.
Picture quality was amazing on my Oled and used the HDR setting on my Panasonic player to standard.
It looked as good as it did when I saw it at BFI IMAX.
And yes, the sound was huge. I did miss the seat shaking bass I had at the IMAX though. Maybe I need a bigger sub 😂
    Masterpiece 😊

Even though we've got that huge Kef THX subwoofer I don't think there can be many places on planet Earth that rival the sound system at the BFI IMAX. I want to see all the Christopher Nolan IMAX films there all over again and again and again. Great to have them on 4K disc too though. John.

I watched Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX 3 times and standard 70mm once and it was absolutely breathtaking every time. I can't believe I still haven't gotten sick of that film since its three hours long, but it is easily my favorite film of the year. I'm waiting for the steelbook to come back in stock, because that edition is the one I want the most. The reviewer Films At Home said that this movie is reason enough to upgrade your whole home theater set up to 4K HDR compatibility. If that isn't the highest praise possible, idk what is!

Funnily enough, I just watched Jeff's video and he's right. Although there have been plenty of others over the years not least of which are INTERSTELLAR, DUNKIRK and TENET. It's amazing that one film maker by the name of Christopher Nolan can get so much so right and so many others get so much so wrong. The film industry needs more determined people like him making real films right now. John.

Great review John. I only just received my steel book of Oppenheimer 4K from HMV through today’s post and look forward to setting aside 3 hours to watch it. Don’t normally go for steel book, but as this is such an important release, I decided to ‘splash the cash’. BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed your documentary DVD on the 1970 Daily Mirror world rally - you’ve done a great job of capturing much of the ‘essence’ of the event, with some truly thrilling and memorable stories from folks like John Hemsley (pouring gearbox oil continuously into a broken box and picking up bullet holes en route) and Bron Burrell and ‘Puff’ the Maxi (my Parents were serial Austin Maxi owners!). It’s great that you’ve also captured interviews from many of the recently mortal-coil departed folks involved (Paddy, Brian, etc). Lovely documentary John - you should be very proud in producing this superb and interesting production. Speak soon.

Very kind of you to say George. It's been an amazing adventure meeting all these luminaries from the British car industry over the past 17 years. If the market hadn't have collapsed I'd have carried on while there were still a few people still alive to interview!
OPPENHEIMER is another great 4K release. It's all relative though so in that regard I suppose American Graffiti is better because it was sourced from film frames about a twentieth the size of IMAX frames. OPPENHEIMER is one of the best for 4K image quality though, no doubt about that.

Finally watched this one this evening. As with Dunkirk and Tenet, the audio scared the hell out of me. I thought the house was going to explode. I find these Nolan films tend to run 6 to 8 dB louder than my normal reference level so I had to turn it down a bit and quickly 😂 I enjoyed the film overall, and it does beg another viewing for sure.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 5 měsíci +1

I showed a friend a couple of extracts of TENET last night and left the subwoofer up to the usual level whereas normally with Mr. Nolan's films I tend to turn it down a couple of points from the amp but leave the rest of the channels where they usually sit. It does mean the house doesn't fall apart but it's a shame really because although it's not possible to reproduce the BFI IMAX sound system it feels similar at times with the subbie up there trying to chuck us out of our seats.

Morning Mark and bagnome. It seems that a great many people had learned enough about IMAX to know that a trip was worth making to see this film. I think that is a big part of the reason why it was such a success. The BFI IMAX let me know when they'd just done their 100th screening of the 15/70 print that each one had been a sellout. That appears to have gone on all over the world so the BFI alone by the time the run was finished might have contributed more than £2m to the worldwide box office. Repeat that a further 28 times for every other genuine IMAX cinema in the world and it starts to add up. Word of mouth must surely have spread so there's a good chance this could be a resurgence of large format films in cinemas across the globe. John.

I found your video and was delighted to see you have a 35mm rig! Keep these videos coming. I do have a small question, I see you have curtains near your screen. Do you use those to mask gray bars? or are they just cosmetic?

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 6 měsíci

Good to have you here Jay. I have a second 35mm projector now and I'm soon to start tackling hooking up the Dolby Digital sound head into a Dolby CP500. That's going to be a task, I'll bet. As for the curtains, they're just something cosmetic but I couldn't have a cinema at home without it replicating a real cinema. I know some cinemas know little about cinema now and don't even have motorized/adjustable masking to envelop the projected image but that isn't cinema that I always used to know and love. I'll accept an unmasked image at a genuine IMAX house but anywhere else and I'll either never go in there or I'll ask for a refund. Stylish curtains are the finishing touch and make a cinema visit into more of an event. We pay to see a show and therefore there should always be an element of showmanship. I don't want to feel like I might as well have waited and watched the film at home... which is what I do just about all the time now other than trips to see a genuine IMAX print.
      John.

And Top Gun: Maverick wasn't even IMAX Simon so imagine how good the real McCoy is. That said, as impressive as OPPENHEIMER is at the IMAX it's not quite up there with the previous three films in that regard as they were all action adventures of some sort. OPPENHEIMER is more of a drama but amazing to see something with such subject matter shot in IMAX and standard 70mm. Hopefully this film has re-educated the film industry with regards to how to re-invigorate the cinema industry and to get people going back time and time again. Remember the days when cinema was a special occasion? We need to get back to that and to do that the quality and presentation needs to return to what it once was. I've been into cinemas recently that don't even have masking on the screens. Ridiculous! Who would bother returning there after seeing anything with awful presentation like that?

Thank you Richard. I don't much care for Titanic I'm afraid but I can report that I saw the 70mm blow-up at the Odeon when first released and if the 4K disc looks fabulous then the computer effects must have been re-done because many of them looked quite poor on the big screen in the best possible format. The PAL LaserDisc looks pretty wonderful though so you never know, it might stand up to the highest video quality. I just wished all the main characters would drown right from the start so not the best reaction Mr. Cameron would have been looking for. He's made some of my favourite films though it's just I didn't think this one was particularly good. Far better than Avatar though.

John so glad you reviewed this. I have seen this film three times in two different cinemas. In the one that seems to be the poor relation the quality of sound and vision was the best seen at that location. In the other cinema its about the same but the sound was like a physical kick in the chest. Knowing what to expect soundwise when replaying the 4k I deliberately set the sub to a less aggressive setting and it was still amazing. I agree with you regarding the picture quality. I set my TV to filmaker mode and slightly tweaked it. l had A bit of a Nolan binge a few weeks ago and found that dialogue which is often problematic in Nolan's films is much better when heard on headphones It was late at night. I think that this disc. hopefully shows that there is life after streaming for the disc format thanks for the review

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 6 měsíci

Morning Mike. Thankfully I don't have problems with the dialogue in any of Christopher Nolan's film (well, no more than any other films I think) but there were two where characters were talking with breathers across their faces so that of course would present with occasionally indiscernible dialogue so I do wonder if that started this business about dialogue being muffled. A big, powerful centre speaker running off a huge amp will always make sound clearer so that's another factor to bear in mind. OPPENHEIMER is mainly a dialogue driven story so making every word comprehensible was a lot more important in this one whereas TENET did not rely so much on dialogue and we heard everything we needed to hear to understand what was basically going on. Well, some of did more than others perhaps but nevertheless I feel fairly sure that was the intention of the film makers.
Pleased to know you like the 4K disc. Proof if it were needed that if the best quality is put in then even a far lower quality disc release such as the 4K will still be fabulous.

Turn the sound up as loud as you can without blowing any speakers up and it should still make a big impact because the sound design is BIG SCREEN sound right from the start. John.

Modern 4K projectors even down to the most basic model are all wonderful and the bigger the projected image the easier it is to see all the detail and therefore any shortcomings. There are still 18 genuine IMAX houses in the USA Timothy so best find the nearest one for the future because apparently IMAX Corp. want to get 15/70 IMAX back out into the world. I'm told they're even looking at doing blow-ups from movies shot on 4K digital video... DUNE 2 for example. Whilst it won't be up to the quality of the real McCoy (of course!) it might prove interesting to see if it can turn a video into a high quality film. I might actually support such a venture myself and get up to the IMAX again.

Wow great timing John, I just picked up mine yesterday and watched it last night. Amazing picture and sound. Sometimes I double up on titles, I will buy the 4K UHD disc and I will also buy the iTunes version. I find that most movies on iTunes will be Dolby vision while the 4K disc will be HDR. I'm not sure why they do this, but Oppenheimer is the same. iTunes is in Dolby vision and the 4K disc is HDR. Also, the iTunes versions of all the Christopher Nolan films that have Imax shots stay at one aspect ratio through the whole movie whereas on the 4K discs they change, depending on what film used. Not sure why they do this, I would love if they would have the Imax 1:78 shots on the streaming versions, but they don't for some unknown reason. Oppenheimer was no exception, aspect ratio through the whole film on streaming was 2:20, anyway just a little side note. Thanks for review :)

It's worth noting you should never have to turn the brightness down in HDR with a TV.
Most mid-high end sets are capable of atleast 1000nits more than enough to capture all the details in HDR movies (oppenheimer being no exception) and can roll off highlight all the way too 4000nits.
Only poorly designed sets have issues cough* HISENSE cough*.
The issue with projectors is that they simply aren't bright enough for HDR, with and average brightness of 100nits 10x lower than whats recommended, so highlight detail gets clipped if proper dynamic tone mapping isn't available.
Lowering the image brightness helps but you'll risk losing detail on the low end (you can only see shades so dark and HDR is already hitting that limit at full brightness in a pitch black room).
And the intended contrast won't be there regardless, Dolby have fixed some of these issues with Dolby cinema but unless they can 10x the lasers brightness it'll never be reference grade.
Imo 100in+ tvs are the way to go for hometheater going forward with TCL offering good prices on local dimming models but I get that some people will be forever attached to the look of projection just liie vinyl.

Telly has never interested me much. Projection is cinema and that's what I've loved throughout my life. I think a lot depends on the disc player though and it's likely one of the higher end Panasonic's could be configured to avoid the fiddling but I find I actually enjoy that side of it as it makes 4K discs more like film collecting. I wouldn't like to have an enormous telly bolted to the wall. I don't like the way they look for one thing but we'd then be limited to the size of the box. Some cinemas think they are going to replace their screens with LED walls in the future. I feel that will help with their terminal decline irrespective of how good they are now but to be fair, video projection isn't film and usually doesn't look like film in most cinemas so perhaps LED walls in every theatre will get image quality back to where it was 30 years ago.
Glad to know you're enjoying your home movie discs on your television and thank you for taking the time to type in all the technical information.

Great video, John. I will get this 4K eventually but I’m afraid I’ve spent too much on movies already. I just bought the Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection 4K Vol. 4 on sale for Black Friday and I also just ordered a pretty expensive limited edition 4K box set of my favorite French movie, Le Samourai, that is releasing in France so I’m importing that. Luckily it has English subtitles or else I wouldn’t have bought it. You should definitely check out Le Samourai sometime. You don’t need to make a video about it, I’m just suggesting you give it a watch one day. It only has an American and a Canadian Criterion release (no UK) so you may have to go with streaming if you watch it. I know you probably can’t stand streaming though haha.

I probably wouldn't have purchased OPPENHEIMER right now but I had to review it really and I have to say that it is satisfying when all the work goes into one of these reviews and it actually finds a good sized audience. This was the first time since I upgraded my Home Cinema, that I felt a massive difference between going to the theater and watching a movie at home... Well, as far as the image is concerned! Seeing the true IMAX shots on a 15-70 film projector, spoiled the home experience for me a bit. That being said, Oppenheimer is a spectacular 4K Blu-ray release and is only behind Tenet for me when it comes to image quality coming from my JVC projector. But the sound is the best 5.1 mix I ever heard, so it's quite the overall experience in my room! I don't think soundbars are the way to go Mack. You'd have to spend thousands to get something that sounds reasonable and you could get an equivalent AV amp and speaker package for probably a quarter of that amount. Maybe an amp and diminutive stereo speakers would be a better starting point but add a reasonable subwoofer. A few hundred pounds on a subwoofer would make a major difference. As for small speakers I have eight JBL Control 1G speakers which are tiny but offer surprisingly big sound in spite of their size. A pair of those with an REL sub or equivalent would be a much better starting point. Richer Sounds had the more basic JBL Control 1 speakers last time I was in there so these things are still around. Whatever you do in the end, have a great time with your setup.

Got my steelbook earlier this week and I’ve yet to spin it. Also imported the 4K edition of Witness from the US and its certainly a major upgrade over the DVD I have owned for the last two decades. Plenty of preorders now that James Cameron has finally had time away from cultivating Pandorian compost and is finally given an HD and 4K release to The Abyss and True Lies. However I do need to ask, what did you think of A Haunting in Venice? And what do you think of the absence of 4K physical release? Especially since the 4K is being streamed on Disney Plus?

I would like to see A Haunting In Venice but it might be one of those I wait for a while before purchasing just in case a 4K disc materializes next year. I think it was shot entirely on video though so it's not particularly appealing other than the fact that I like Kenneth Branagh's interpretation of Hercule Poirot.
The Abyss and True Lies should be excellent 4K discs. I have The Abyss on Super 8 (excellent, despite its comparatively diminutive Super 35 origin) and True Lies looks exceptional on PAL LaserDisc so that should be top-notch for 35mm films transferred to 4K video and converted into the 4K disc format. I'm not sure if I'll get either of them though. I certainly have little interest in Titanic but Aliens will be a curiosity and a good excuse for another Alien type of CZcams restrospective.

@@moviecollector5920 IMO Venice was the best Branagh Poirot adaptation, and yes I believe it was filmed on digital, the 4K maybe an upscale (which is ironic for Branagh since like Nolan he is a fan of 65mm) I already pre-ordered the Titanic 4K and I think the Aliens, Abyss and True Lies 4K’s are first being released on digital in mid December, before making their way onto disc in March. TBH I’m tempted to purchase both True Lies and The Abyss on digital, before purchasing the discs in March, but holding out hope that they end up on Disney Plus.

Good morning Joe. What you are watching is actually a 4K Blu-ray so although these are on the same CD sized disc as Blu-ray they are completely different thereafter. I rarely have problems with DVD and standard Blu-ray but the 4K discs are still a bit of an unknown quantity. I have stumbled across five discs in my collection that go through the same problem you are having with your Le Mans '66 disc (different name over here to your Ford v Ferrari title). I have watched my copy of that several times though and there hasn't been a problem - yet. I don't re-watch discs very often though so the only reason I've found the knackered discs I have is because I re-check the top releases on occasion to see how discs such as OPPENHEIMER stand up to them. I suspect I'm going to find a whole lot more faulty discs when I do re-watch my back catalogue in the years ahead and I'm therefore hoping to have the time to chapter through a whole bunch of them sometime soon. Finding the time to do that will be the problem. Fortunately I've been able to replace three of the faulty discs for around £10 each but I know I'm going to find more faulty discs as time goes on. I call this freezing issue 'the 4K fault'. The only new disc I've seen it on so far is 'PLANE' so that went back to HMV and because they didn't have another copy in stock it was swapped for the dinosaur flick '65'. I need to find another copy of PLANE. With that new disc displaying the 4K fault that brought my total of faulty discs I've come across to six.

@@3D_Blu-ray_Bunker It is one of the best 4K discs but not the best. That accolade still rests with TENET I think but DUNKIRK isn't far off. For those of us that lived through the huge screens of the past 15/70 IMAX is still the best method for cinemas. Whether or not IMAX is the best format ever is open to debate but imagine if there were to be an IMAX house twice the width of the BFI IMAX and someone were to shoot IMAX with a 2X squeeze anamorphic lens. That may well be the best imaginable format for cinema ever but sadly there's not the market for such a thing any longer. The move to smaller screens and even telephones for movie watching has largely killed cinema. I am thankful that a few cinemas still exist that can show us a large format film with the sort of imagery that should be everywhere in the industry today. Perhaps get along to see INTERSTELLAR for more of an all-encompassing cinema tour-de-force at the BFI IMAX. Most of OPPENHEIMER was standard 70mm so not as impressive overall as TENET or DUNKRIK at 85 feet wide but there's nothing better than a big screen for any film as far as I'm concerned. I want to see something bigger and more impressive than I can do at home if I'm going out but that's not usually the case with cinema in general any longer. I've pushed Super 8 beyond its limits but I'm not mathematician enough to work out the percentage difference between 15/70 IMAX and Super 8. I am certain though that relatively speaking I've enlarged Super 8 far more than 15/70 IMAX on the 85 foot wide screen at the IMAX. The bigger Super 8 goes the more impressive it looks. But if you didn't grow up during the era of huge cinema screens then I can understand why that would not be so appealing. Bigger was always better for me and that's what I've always strived for. Today's low quality video projection cinemas simply don't interest me so I suppose I'm not the best person to comment on them but with regards to IMAX at the BFI, I think the imagery is just about as perfect as anyone could wish for. The same for the Ronson Theatre in the Science Museum which is a little more intimate but I do prefer the bigger screen and the atmosphere at the BFI IMAX. There were many anamorphic 35mm sequences within INTERSTELLAR contained in the 15/70 print and are probably better than any video projection I've seen anywhere but I haven't made a scientific study of that. I think what I'm saying overall here is that the BFI IMAX is the best I have ever seen but I do agree that OPPENHEIMER is not the best I have seen there. I do think it's a great film though but even though it's probably better than his previous three films from a critical point of view, I prefer the previous three from a cinematic point of view. I hope some of all this waffle makes sense.
      John.

As we said in the past John, The Dark Knight Rises is an exceptional looking film. The IMAX scenes are on anither level image wise. The Thing is the best none IMAX film I have seen compared to the bluray. It looks superb! A masterpiece from Mr Carpenter.

TENET is the best looking large format film of the lot but closely followed, or possibly matched, by DUNKIRK. Jaws may still be the best 35mm but having swapped video projectors this year I could do with looking at them all again because the results are slightly different now. All systems are different and what looks best on one may not look best on another. That's certainly the case with mine. The Thing looked pretty darned lovely when I last ran it so it may look even better now.

@@moviecollector5920 Not seen Dunkirk or Tenet yet. Got both on bluray but not 4k. It's the IMAX scenes Nolan shoots that sets his film apart. Saw some reviews of Oppenheimer 4k on youtube they say it's best looking 4k disc yet?. Mmm. Might give it a look when price is right. Cheers.

Here is me wondering, how on earth Nolan will be able to top this masterpiece. What a genius.

It's such a shame TENET didn't generate the business that it should have done. Too many of us felt it was too risky to sit in a cinema at the time. I would have enjoyed sitting there completely bamboozled by superlative imagery passing across the 85 foot wide screen along with sound that regularly punched me in the chest. Let's hope his next film stands up to the previous four. Five if you include The Dark Knight Rises which was also a great IMAX exhibition. John.

The painted white wall (!!!) is ten feet wide Chris and the room is about an 11.5ft square.
