THE FLASH 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW: What a surprise this one was!

  • 4K UHD review of the new release of the 2023 comic book superhero movie The Flash starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton and a whole load of bit parts by other actors from the Detective Comics superhero films, particularly Zack Snyder's Justice League.
Image aspect ratio is 1.90:1 and comes with HDR and Dolby Vision. Sound defaults to Dolby Atmos but with the option for Dolby Digital 5.1.
This release did not do well in cinemas and has been widely panned by fans of the comic book films. I was interested to see Michael Keaton reprise his Batman role which he does with aplomb thereby confirming his status as the all-time best interpretation of the Caped Crusader. But better than that was that I very much enjoyed this movie which I was not entirely expecting. Watch it as an action adventure that is not afraid to poke fun at the ridiculous nature of itself and you may be surprised. I don't know why it was widely criticized but I suspect it's because many did not appreciate Ezra Miller's interpretation of The Flash. Perhaps this portrayal was at odds with the television series of the same name. I thought he was hilarious right from the start which suited Michael Keaton's fun portrayal and off-skew sense of humour that he always brought to playing Batman.

And I normally don't care much for comic book superhero films any longer. I would have shown a clip from your video but I couldn't get it down in time as the PC I do that on was telling me it was going to take 2 hours and 15 minutes... gulp!

This film is a blast. It doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything but Ezra's acting is so good you genuinely forget what a cretin he has been in almost ruining the release of the movie. Loved Keaton's return as well.

That's a good summary there Stee. I hadn't heard about Ezra Miller's problems but it wouldn't have affected my enjoyment of a movie anyway. I still enjoy the Naked Gun films and O.J. Simpson is in those. He's damned funny too. John.

I''m 69 and my son 27 and we both enjoyed this. It was fun and re-watchable. I don't listen to the the boys and girls reviewing movies anymore, because I have found out too many times they are wrong. A movie is put down, like this one and I go see it and it's good or great and fun to watch and I pat myself on the back and thank myself for not listening to these people. I even enjoyed The Meg 2 on streaming. I didn't go see it because of all the bad word of mouth. Anyway The Meg was a fun movie to watch and weather I see it again or not, who knows? Thank You John O

Glad to see that you discovered the true merits of this film. I thought it was wildly entertaining and inventive and a real joy to see Michael Keaton as Batman again. As much as I wish Henry Cavill had returned as Superman, I was shocked at how I liked Sasha Calle as Supergirl. She managed to pull off being, dare I say, sexy, viscerally ass-kicking, and vulnerable, and thankfully not in a tired Woke, Boss Girl manner. I'm a big fan of Zack Snyder's Justice League (having seen it three times now!) and appreciated Ezra Miller as Flash lightening up its dark tone. The same appeal and humor is here and honestly I never tired of it, like I've heard from SO many others. In general, I've tired of superhero movies, but this one was just so much damned fun and with many welcome surprises. I'm definitely purchasing this one.

DC/WB release with Atmos and Dolby vision which for me makes it worth the purchase.
The film itself, I really enjoyed it , MK returning as Batman was worth it alone.
The story is great , the additional appearances make for intriguing viewing.
I always worry about multiverse films, this one did a good job.
It's sad it's the last time we see Ben Affleck as The Batman in this universe but the latest reboot is a fantastic if not Severn inspired movie.

Greetings from Santiago de Chile. I saw "The Flash" at my local Cinemark XD and it was fun. Then I bought the 4K an I really enjoyed much more the movie, specially the sequences with Michael Keaton and the lovely Sacha Calle. Director Andy Muschietti combine the charm of the old takes on superhero pre 1992 and gave a movie that would enjoyed the audiences that still prefer Burton's Batman over Zack Snyder version. It's a love letter for an older generation that think of Christopher Reeve when they heard the name Superman. Fingers cross that with "The Brave and the Bold", Muschietti could get his revenge developing his own version of the Dark Knight and Damian Wayne, probably the most complex casting since Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter. Adiós, amigo.

Morning Gaspar. You've typed up a good summary of your thoughts there and you've made me think about it too. Not only a wonderful movie but visually beautiful one as well. I'm glad it is gaining an audience on home video. It deserved so much better than it got. The CGI I think was deliberately wonky to give it a comic-book feel.
A lot of people had outrage for Ezra Miller's behavior, but they watch actors that have done as bad if not worse all the time. Mark Wahlberg for example was part of a racist gang that prowled the streets of Boston attacking minorities. He did two stints in jail for that. once for stomping a Jewish man until he fractured his jaw & another for beating an Asian man so badly that he permanently blinded him in one eye.
Kirk Doulas raped Natalie Wood when she was 16.
Walter Brennan was a noted bigot who openly celebrated the assassinations of Martin Luther King & Robert F. Kennedy. Actors aren't perfect but at least Ezra is getting help for his mental health issues.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 9 měsíci

They are just actors so what they have done or what they stand for shouldn't really affect our opinion of a film or in this case a video. I have been guilty of it a little myself in terms of not watching films I like because one of the actors or actresses has been lecturing us about how we should live. That tends to get my goat. But at least it seems there are quite a few of us who enjoyed The Flash and some of us very much liked it so maybe it will find a bigger audience on the home market than it did in cinemas. John.

I completely agree with, I liked it a lot, actually was surprised how much so, thinking now it's the best out of all DC Extended Universe!
Saddened it didn't recoup its budget, but there are many reasons - some heard it was 'bad', some heard the DCEU is going to be rebooted, so think there's no reason to watch it, at least in theaters (studios shot themselves in the leg by teaching people to short theatrical windows, or immediate streaming releases, and many are just waiting to see it at home), some 'cancel [un]culture' crazies read something 'bad' about the main actor and decided to 'boycott' him, even though such movies involve hundreds of people, and there's also just a general superhero fatigue, the genre is kind of dying, like westerns did.
Anyway, I'm glad we have this film, with the best visual representation of multiple universes and time in my opinion, and lots of great fun action and cameos!

It suffered do to Warner Bros incompetence. Disney failed over the last 7 years, tremendously and thus warner bros was also doomed in that time. DC kept trying to follow up disney, but that was a sinking ship. In fact, it was divisive but if they had just went with the snyder vision, things would have indeed been better today than it is now. Which is tragic.

@@jonathansoko1085 This film was a good one though so in spite of the constant superhero comic book tosh that has been appearing there have been one or two in amongst the deluge of tosh that's been worth watching. To be fair to the film industry as a whole though there isn't much that generates a return at cinemas any longer and for a while it looked like comics brought to the screen were the saviour. The trouble is that nothing lasts forever. Spider-Man and Batman might continue to do well if the films are good but not if they keep changing the actors and cover it all with multiple timelines. That makes a nonsense of it all but I did like The Flash so it's not all been bad.

Great video! Saw this one in the Ottawa liemax on release night and thought it was fairly good. The film made fantastic use of the increased vertical space offered by the 1.9 aspect ratio (I missed that greatly when watching The Creator in the same cinema last night). Supergirl was my favourite character - seeing Keaton aged that much just made me depressed I think haha. I liked flash's dad too.
That said, something about The Flash feels off in a way that the previous DC films don't, and I think it's the visuals - as you mentioned, they're not as strong as they should be. Going back to Man of Steel, to me it really looks cohesive and feels special whereas The Flash does not. In terms of DC, I am hopeful that Aquaman 2 might be more my speed. The sequel is being mastered in stereo 3D, and therefore my expectations are high: the first film uses 3D to a masterful effect, among the best of all comic-based productions.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 9 měsíci

I only find that 3D movies work at all well if they've been shot in 3D. It it's done afterwards in a computer they effects look a bit like cardboard cut-outs moving across the screen to me. I'm not really the biggest fan of putting special glasses on to watch a movie though.
The Flash largely worked because it didn't take itself too seriously. I thought Michael Keaton looked good and it was as though he'd never been away. The humour of this film was perfectly suited to him too so it all had a cohesion about it that just worked for me. That hasn't happened with anything since Mr. Nolan finished his Batman films.

Hi John, another great review, thank you. I love that you enjoyed the movie. As a massive fan of DC and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, I thought this film was handled well by the director, who himself is a fan of Zack’s work (and amazing that ZSJL is canon here and not the atrocious Josstice League 2017 version).
Michael Keaton will always be Batman for me and I have such fond memories of seeing Batman 89 on opening night as a teenager and then paying £80 for a VHS copy in Forbidden Planet when it was first released on home video (with my first working wage) one of the few VHS tapes that I’ve kept in my collection. To see Keaton’s version of Batman handled so respectfully was just a joy to watch and the recreated kitchen, Batcave and Batmobile from the 89 movie all made me smile wide. I watched this film twice on IMAX, then again on streaming and I also have my HMV steelbook copy ready in my movie room for an upcoming viewing.
That baby scene is comedy gold and even though the ending features my least favourite Batman, in the context of the movie’s ending, it was perfect. Oh and that last line of dialogue made me laugh out loud!
Thanks again for your great content.

Before the comments to this video started coming in Scott I would have expected to reply to you with "Well, at least you and I loved this film then". But as it's turned out there is a lot of enthusiasm for this one and that's a nice surprise. It seems that a bit of cancel culture was unleashed which is a bit daft but it is the modern world. I can partially understand it because since Hugh Grant made the mistake of trying to promote a political party in the last election I've found it difficult to want to watch some of his great films but that won't go on forever. Maybe therefore as time goes on The Flash will gain in reputation, find an audience and ultimately recoup its costs and perhaps turn a profit for Warner Brothers. It wasn't an IMAX film though so if you saw it in a form of IMAX cinema then it was just on a bigger than normal screen. You only have to look at it to know it isn't IMAX because IMAX has such definition, such depth and detail that you just can't compare it to anything shot on and/or projected on video. The sound is highly impressive though even if the image quality doesn't come close to IMAX. The 'Optimized For IMAX' credit at the end means it's shot in 1.90:1 to fill faux IMAX screens. Black bars top and bottom for the full 1.43:1 IMAX screens but at the BFI IMAX and most other genuine IMAX houses it's so huge that you don't notice those blank areas of the screen too much.
      John.

@@moviecollector5920 Yes John, I agree. The sound was still amazing in faux IMAX but the optimised screenings don’t compare to watching the best possible experience. My best IMAX experiences have been Inception at Universal Studios Florida and The Dark Knight Rises & Interstellar at the Science Centre Glasgow. Never been to the BFI in London, looks outstanding!
      Thanks again.

Hi John! Thanks again for this channel and all your hard work. Q: Was this truly 1.90:1? Odd to see that offered on a disc w/out any 16x9 option? Because the shots you showed didn't look that way (rectangular). Did you have to reframe it in a quirky manner? Please help the internal tech geek in me understand whats going on :)

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 9 měsíci +1

I had the image a bit cropped top and bottom for the biggest possible image. Don't take too much notice of those stills off the screen. The box says 1.90:1 and I didn't think to question it so it could be wrong. It does have the credit 'Optimized for IMAX' which is one of those meaningless pieces of drivel designed to make people think they're watching something shot in IMAX which this certainly isn't. The trailer wasn't exactly the best looking video projection I've ever seen but putting it on that huge 85ft wide screen at the BFI IMAX didn't really do it any favours. A big screen always helps any movie but that doesn't mean to say it will look particularly good.

I am with you, I enjoyed this movie more than probably most people. I just watched and enjoyed seeing Michael Keaton and the humor worked with me. I am not a hardcore comic book person so if things aren't correct for the Flash character I won't know. Also seeing Christopher Reeves was great. I loved his movie and I saw that Superman movie at the theater when it came out. I always felt so bad what happened to him. He genuinely seemed like a real nice guy and didn't deserve what happened to him.

I too don't really go in for the comic book films any longer Stephen so maybe that one of the reasons this one appealed because it's a bit different and we both found it funny. I used to read The Flash occasionally as a child and if I recall correctly he was a serious character. Well, those type of superhero films have been done to death so this one was different. It was also perfectly suited to Michael Keaton returning because he's always got that cheeky glint in his eye in everything. The flash was a welcome, genuine surprise for me. I'd have avoided it if I hadn't seen the trailer at the BFI IMAX with Mr. Keaton's appearance. It just goes to show that I shouldn't even pre-judge these comic character movies. John.

The babies scene in the beginniing was hilarious. I thought alt-Barry was a bit of a pr*ck, but it made for some humorous scenes too. I thought the movie was a bit unbalanced at times but overall, i certainly enjoyed it in the cinema, as did my friend. I liked Michael Keaton back as batman, and some of the nice surprise cameos you mention. Great review John :)
The main reason why I saw this film in the first place is the return of Michael Keaton's Batman. Keaton definitely stole the show and took the film to another level. Ezra Miller is a good actor but unfortunately he is my least favorite The Flash. The problem with Miller's Barry is that he is annoying at times and the younger version of Barry is way too childish and immature. I think Sasha Calle did a great job as Supergirl and hope we get to see more of her in the future. The CGI was terrible in some places (like the cameos) which is a shame.
Overall I enjoyed the film and it has a good plot. I would have preferred the original ending and didn't like the changes made by James Gunn.

It would have been nice to see Michael Keaton at the end but I think I found it so funny when the other chap came along that it made it an even better movie for me. I didn't find the lower quality than usual CGI a problem at all. It enhanced the cabbage patch babies sequence which was totally ridiculous but hilarious and that seemed to set the scene for something not attempting to take itself too seriously which is not the impression I got with the previous DC comic book films that I've seen since the Christopher Nolan Batman series ended. I've enjoyed them but not as much as this one. My wife found the younger version of The Flash somewhat annoying but strangely I didn't. Perhaps I would have done a few years ago though.

He's actually damned good in the role. I hope you can see past any scandal. I didn't know he'd been convicted of crimes but once he's served his time then he's paid his debt to society. If he hasn't been convicted of anything then never forget the innocent until proven guilty because that's certainly being forgotten in Britain at the moment. As regards the box office i do feel the negative press Ezra Miller received due to the various misdemeanours he was involved in didn't help and also the new regime now in place at WB and their plans to reset the DC universe left many people feeling it was kind of pointless seeing it. I think it's time to call it a day on all these superhero films other than perhaps the two main ones - Spider-Man and Batman. But Spider-Man does need to get back to his roots if it's worth bothering otherwise it will likely just be more of the same with excessive computer effects, too much action but not enough character and story. The last 'The Batman' was pretty good but Michael Keaton's reappearance has just indicated how Batman should probably be portrayed. I thought Ezra Miller was pretty terrific in this so it's a shame cancel culture set in. In years to come hope people who were put off the movie by media reports will look back on it and wonder why they allowed themselves to stay away from it. A modern, big budget motion picture involves thousands of people and not just one so if a member of the catering staff on a particular movie is reported to have done something wrong maybe we should all boycott that movie in future!
By the way, the comments on here have almost universally been positive about The Flash. If only some of the critics had have allowed themselves to have kept an open mind perhaps it would have fared a lot better at the box office.
And the steelbook's lovely by the way. I hope the Dublin HMV starts getting back into home movie discs soon.

It's all getting a bit tired in that regard so maybe they should just take a break for a few years. I really enjoyed The Flash as well. It was great to see Keaton back. I also enjoyed the new Super Girl. The CGI is a tad ropey (and that is being kind) but it somehow added to it. It's one of the better DC films for sure. Blue Beetle gets a lot of praise but I think I prefer The Flash. It has problems, not least some Scorpion King levels of CGI, but I found it to be a lot of fun. And I will never tire of Keaton's Batman.
Some of the negativity towards it will no doubt be linked to Ezra Miller's behaviour over the past few years. Also DC movies are in a weird place, caught between the old Zack Snyder stuff and the upcoming James Gunn semi-reboot.

I think a lot of DC fans have given up on DC movies in 2023 because they feel little or none of it will be part of the new reboot that is currently in the works with James Gunn at the helm. DC have really been in a mess for years now and are falling even further behind Marvel now. I've been watching all movies from both camps all along.

I rather gave up on the comic book movies when Spider-Man was remade only about ten years after the Sam Raimi classic. Then Christopher Nolan remade Batman so I only stuck with the Superman films and very much enjoyed Superman Returns. I was then surprised to see Superman remade as Man of Steel and I didn't like that at all until I gave it a second try more recently in preparation of belatedly watching and reviewing Batman v. Dunno if it's DC marketing, Both these films were low key compared to zzz Barbie which was on TV in some form every 30 mins. Maybe for some it was the Ezra Miller scandal ???.
Who knows. I've liked several films that bombed.

There are going to be a lot of movies from days gone by that are cancelled now if that's true because there have always been dodgy goings on in films. Remember that chap by the name of O.J. Simpson?
Bring back Tobey Maguire as a middle-aged Spider-Man and make a less CGI movie and it's likely the superhero flick could gain a new lease of life. It would surely attract a more general audience rather than relying on children and twenty somethings. Then again, does anyone over the age of 30 still go to the cinema regularly?

While I found some parts of the overall plot quite problematic, and yes the CG wasn’t top tier at points, I enjoyed the film so much moment-to-moment that I can overlook those issues and just say that I had a great time watching it. Keaton in particular was a treat, and I wish we’d gotten more of him: they also brought him back for the direct-to-streaming batgirl film that they cancelled after finishing fully shooting it, and it pains me that we’ll never get to see Keaton’s performance there.
The film was generally quite well reviewed and liked by audiences. I think the poor box office take is down purely to the criminal controversies swirling around the film’s star. Many people decided not to see it due to Miller’s involvement.

The response in the comments on here does indicate and perhaps confirm that most people very much liked 'The Flash' Adam. That is a bit of a surprise to me as I thought I might have missed something that ruined the movie for most. It seems that it is only that there's been a scandal or controversy around the lead actor that caused the poor returns at the box office. It's a bit daft to avoid a movie because there's someone in it who has done something wrong. I won't stop watching The Naked Gun because O.J. Simpson is in it. In fact, I think O.J. Simpson is hilarious in those films and he was very good in Capricorn One too.

@@jresin_photo There are two IMAX cinemas in the centre of London but the Odeon West End isn't one of them. They are the BFI IMAX and the Ronson Theatre in the Science Museum. The BFI IMAX may have INTERSTELLAR playing while you're over so check for times and tickets for that one as it's the ultimate IMAX trip: www.bfi.org.uk/bfi-imax The Ronson Theatre can be seen here: www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/imax-cinema But please be careful to ensure you are seeing a genuine IMAX at either venue because mainly they're screening 4K video projection using lasers as the light source to punch it up onto the huge screens. Only 15/70 IMAX film prints are the real deal and everything else is what I call 'Faux IMAX' so be a little careful. If OPPENHEIMER is still getting a screening at either one then they both have 15/70 prints and therefore you should be okay. INTERSTELLAR, TENET, DUNKIRK and both THE DARK KNIGHT films are going to be genuine IMAX 15/70 too so that should give you a good selection to aim for.
In the West End the Prince Charles Cinema just off Leicester Square do what they can to keep film alive and show many 35mm and 70mm prints: princecharlescinema.com/PrinceCharlesCinema.dll/Home But it's only the Odeon Leicester Square of the big cinemas in Leicester Square I think who have kept the ability to screen an occasional 70mm or 35mm film print when a new release is out with master prints available. The Empire was the greatest cinema in the world for years but it's now a multiplex with video projection only. The Warner West End is now a Vue with nothing much left to recommend it but studios 5 and 7 were formerly THX auditoriums so should hopefully still be better than most. The Odeon West End (Leicester Square Theatre) was demolished a few years ago and has now been replaced by a small studio underground. It's all rather heartbreaking really but at least the two IMAX cinemas and the Prince Charles exist so you should have a choice there.

But there are better examples available on 4K disc so I recommend taking a look at TENET and DUNIRK. You are right! His performance in the emotional parts was really good!

Agreed. I'm surprised that so many people so far saw this film in the same light as I did so it's encouraging that perhaps it will find an audience after all. It wasn't IMAX though but just blown up from the lowly 4K video onto the 1.90:1 screens of the faux IMAX cinemas and even onto the 1.43:1 screens of the genuine IMAX houses but that leaves big white areas top and bottom. Doesn't seem to matter though because those genuine IMAX screens are so huge.
      John.

Oh no John, my wallet is getting nervous… again… after your reviews. Kind regards, Steve

It might not be for everyone Stephen but read through the comments on here and I certainly was not alone in thinking this was a great fun flick. If you fancy a good laugh then this might be a good one for Christmas time, particularly if you have older children around who can take a bit of bad language at times. John.

I've just got permission from the distributor to rip their trailers for the show down from CZcams to include clips so maybe in a week or so I'll start to get something together. Some great scary stories so far but a way to go yet. John.

I can divorce the artist from the art; that's not Ezra Miller on the screen, it's Barry Allen. I think that 'The Flash' is a great movie!

I loved this movie. Loved all the extras, especially the making of video. I got this steelbook myself. Keaton stole this movie though. He was amazing in it.

      @@moviecollector5920 Huzzah 😂😂
As you said it was a funny movie. The thing that hurt this movie was Ezra Miller's personal issues that were over the news. This movie nearly didn't even get released.

@@Sparkykelly1 The lead actor in a movie had problems so it bombs. Sadly that makes sense today but it's not right. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Google the issues and you will see why a lot of people boycotted the movie. They alienated the audience before it got released, almost ruining the movie before it was even out.

The 800 series has all the hifi connections on it, the 400 series doesn't with just an optical sound connection in addition to a couple of hdmi ports. There is also an HDR optimizer on the 800 I believe. If I were to get a new 4K player today it would be the £450 version of the 800 series which gives multizone Blu-ray and multi-region DVD. It depends on what you want. The 400 series is a great little player and a bargain so maybe it's the one to start with and see how you get on for a few years. John.
