Boy am I thankful I stumbled upon your video. I hooked up a Walmart sound bar to my Sony TV, and thought I would forever need to use two remotes! I had originally hooked it up with the optical cable since it’s an older TV, but it now works perfectly in the headphone jack of the TV! I’m willing to degrade my audio minimally for the convenience, but it’s only TV so who cares if you lose any audio quality. I can still stream my music to it via Bluetooth
I’m trying to use studio monitors usually used for music production as my tv sound system. I want to find a way to use the tv remote to control the volume on them since these monitors can’t be controlled by remotes. Would plugging the speakers into the headphone jack on the tv allow me to use tv remote to control the speaker volume?
Thank You for this video. I have a high end soundbar and was about to give up using it. Using the digital optical cable as a connection I could never find the sweet spot volume. It was either too loud or too soft. This connection you recommend produces the perfect volume. Two thumbs up!
personally I'd just use a digital or coax connection to the sound bar (if that's available) and program the remote to control the sound bar audio instead of the TV then disable the TV audio. that's IF you have a remote that can be programmed like that though
If your remote is “not” programmable the only “potential” way to control the volume is by connecting using RCA and setting your TV speakers, “IF” your TV has these setting available, to external and variable

You can use your sound bar's remote to change volume but this video is about using the TV remote to change volume so you wouldn't have to switch between the remotes.
+sweetbrandigirl It's way more convenient. I did it for my dad who's older cos it's simpler for him to understand. And to my ear, i cannot hear any difference between optical and analog audio. Perhaps some audiophiles can but it sounds fine on both to me. One issue i will raise, though, is you get a bit of white noise when it's switched off with the analog setup.
Your sound bar should have physical buttons mostly located on top or in the middle facing towards you You don't really need a remote to control your soundbar if it doesn't have one that's pretty stupid and a very poor design flaw Just like my Samsung soundbar has physical buttons without me using my media remote that came with it 😉👍
The volume control on the TV can be linked to the headphone/aux jack in settings. I set mine up this way. I just use the Sony TV remote to control the soundbar.

This is a terrible idea unless you have stuff that's old or missing features. HDMI ARC is the way to go. A soundbar that supports it should be fully controlled by the TV; RTFM. Part of the point of having a soundbar is to get the additional audio channels, especially the center channel so you're not constantly changing the volume between dialogue and Michael Bay explosions.
+noc007 Yeah - I spent $3000 in 2009 for a 55" LED Samsung TV that must be considered old as it does not have HDMI ARC. This video might've been helpful but back in 2009 my TV also didn't have a headphone input. Must be old. Betting that anyone that uses this to hook up their soundbar lacks head phone jack too
Yeah, sending an amplified signal from a TV's headphone jack into a soundbar is a good way to overload capacitors and cause your soundbar to stop working.
You know this method does not work with me at all That's the one thing I hate about Samsung why do they have their audio jack and the optical jack audio fixed? I know for a fact they do that on purpose in order to sell their own Samsung soundbars which is downright corporate greed 😡 as much as I like Samsung TVs I think I'm going to permanently switch to Sony Bravia TVs because at least They allow you to use the TV remote to control external volume 😍👍 But until then I'm just going to find the most affordable Samsung soundbar that doesn't break my pocket 😑
Good point! I knew there was something fishy about the audio output not being variable as others! Samsung is also dumbing down their "Smart Tv" to a dumber tv by eliminating the Apps...totally nuts and worthy of changing brands despite having the best picture quality in the industry!

This was worthless and not close to the question I was asking. Didn't deal with Sony TV and JBL Sound Bar. Most of the connections comments didn't refer to Optical cable connection. Did not help.

Get a Harmony remote and keep the better sound quality. Especially if you have a soundar with more than two channels.

Optical will not work for controlling volume, optical can never be made “variable” because optical is essentially a beam of light

My Onn TV automatically turns of the TV speakers everytime you shut it off if there's a jack plugged into the 3.5mm. Super annoying.

Yeah. RCA cables suck. This works because the headphone input on the TV cancels out the TV speakers.
