Of course it's bugged. They're working with old school tech so it's a bit more abrasive and in your face is all. I'm using a smart phone in America with a camera on both sides and a microphone, with a government that admits it's using an A.I. to keep tabs on me with. The difference is I can open up the assistant app, and call my eavesdropper every name in the book because it doesn't care. The dogmatic eavesdroppers they deal with over there wouldn't be able to handle that I'd assume.

This reminds me of a joke:
A hotel in Moscow. A room for four with four strangers. Three of them soon open a bottle of vodka and proceed to get acquainted, then drunk, then noisy, singing, and telling political jokes. The fourth man desperately tries to get some sleep; finally, in frustration he surreptitiously leaves the room, goes downstairs, and asks the lady concierge to bring tea to Room 67 in ten minutes. Then he returns and joins the party. Five minutes later, he bends to a power outlet: "Comrade Major, some tea to Room 67, please." In a few minutes, there's a knock at the door, and in comes the lady concierge with a tea tray. The room falls silent; the party dies a sudden death, and the prankster finally gets to sleep. The next morning he wakes up alone in the room. Surprised, he runs downstairs and asks the concierge what happened to his companions. "You don't need to know!" she answers. "B-but...but what about me?" asks the terrified fellow. 'Oh, you...well...Comrade Major liked your tea gag a lot."

@@eh86055 really? The joke is that the 4th person in the room was in fact not a communist. He wanted to sleep, or at least spook his roommates, so he went down and ordered the tea ahead of time. He bent down and very obviously ordered the tea in front of his roommates to make it seem like he was a spook of some sort. His friends freaked out, because the tea actually showed up.
The punchline is that the outlet he spoke into was actually bugged, and his roommates were removed for one reason or another by the Communist spies.

they no doubt have *some* leniency with foreigners, especially journalists, doesnt mean that Shane really should have ended up in more trouble for the things he did there. after all, the same Generals and colonels he partied with his first time there did catch wind of the things he filmed of him and vice doing there & was warned to never come back.
had he stayed any longer it sure seems like he would have been arrested and it be worth it to him, arresting Shane, to the North Koreans, would have been worth keeping the info he released to the world at that time secret.

The first two men open a bottle of vodka, while the third is tired and goes straight to bed. He is unable to sleep however, as his increasingly drunk friends tell political jokes loudly.
After a while, the tired man gets frustrated and walks downstairs for a smoke. He stops in the lounge and asks the receptionist to bring tea to their room in five minutes.
The man walks back into the room, joins the table, leans towards a power outlet and speaks into it:
"Comrade major, we want some tea to room 62 please."
His friends laugh on the joke, until there is a knock on the door. The receptionist brings a tea pot. His friends fall silent and pale, horrified of what they just witnessed. The party is dead, and the man goes to sleep.
After a good night's rest, the man wakes up, and notices his friends are gone. Surprised, he walks downstairs and asks the receptionist where they went.
The nervous receptionist whispers that KGB came and took them before dawn.
