Movies, games, and the occasional editorial.
From A-Z list films, video games, and other overlooked goodness.
Schedule -
Monday - 1 PM EST New Main Show Episode
Also occasional episodes of Good Bad Games and other assorted stuff at random times. - Zábava
Alien turns from ruthless killer to Alf. Everyone is cool with it.
right... like it killed 2 of their friends.
And potentially turned off the oxygen killing the original ship's crew. And for all we know was somehow responsible for blowing up the space station and killing hundreds more. Although given how slipshod the film is, for details, those two could have been down to the stupidity of the cast.
Also didn't the water supply get poisoned too before anything else happened. I think that supersedes the self defense excuse
I guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb lost the password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Mark Maverick Instablaster :)
The Golden Girls riff was comedy genius. Good effort man
"Why won't this thing answer me?!"
"It's only programmed to follow my voice."
"That's stupid, what if you get killed?"
"Never thought of that."
I fucking died at that scene 😂
I'm surprised he didnt say something like "if I died you'd be long dead already" or "if I die then your survival isnt my problem anymore"
The year is 1986. Lance Lindsey directed a sci-fi/horror film. He wished he hadn't.
That sitcom joke is one of the reasons why I love this channel.
Makes all the effort worth it :)
This is your best one yet! A plus plus
damn man, I haven't seen this movie in almost 30 years
that part was indeed worth it. i just laughed throughout.
Me too. I smiled at that.
"Air supply has been turned off. Usually that's followed by a thank you."
I actually laughed out loud. 4 star joke.
:)
Unexpectedly epic!
I was also struck by the great synth soundtrack- so much so that I tracked down the composer and emailed him. He regards the time period fondly though thought the movie was terrible. He tracked the entire soundtrack on a Yamaha DX7. He continues to compose with more orchestral leanings. He also provided a couple trivia tidbits. He was the voice of the monster and he did some foley work on the film as well. He also let slip that in the 80’s he played synthesizer for a band called “Balance”
They could've quadrupled their profits if they waited twenty years and sold the two Millennium Falcons, instead of using them as hanger door decoration.

Hey, its that prop that is every scifi movie!
A year late with this reply but yeah, that's done the rounds for the last 30 years.
The Star Crystal was filmed in front of a studio audience.
Back in 1987, my dad brought this movie home from the video rental store when I was seven years old. I remember watching it and bits and pieces of the movie from back then, but never could remember the name of it. Until you made this review. Thank you for scratching a 33 year old mental itch that I never could reach. 😃
This movie is so weird! Starts of like Alien, with Bladerunner-ish music, then turns into E.T.!
I think they figured if they mashed 3 different blockbusters together they'd have an instant classic
Playing the 'Golden Girls' theme had me almost rolling on the floor! Good choice!
Oh look, the engine room is "Prop # 195-290-1"! I love that thing.
The Golden Girls theme song is such a nice touch. :)
I had an alternate version with Three's Company but felt this worked better.
This channel is like spiritual successor to Mystery Science Theater, Loving this!
Thank you!
Ha, I forgot about this loopy film. So cheesy eighties. Had one of the most bizarre twists where the alien becomes cute and friendly after killing people. Poor thing was just misunderstood. Gar-Gar.
I wish the sitcom ending spunoff on Netflix, but as a cheesy 80s sitcom with bad era SFX
Crystal of a Gar, I now know who you are, ohh baby...
@@jokarpinski22 the golden gars
This is like six different films stuck together with bubble gum O_o
What a waste of 2 perfectly good millenium falcons I would love to have
And it's all out of gum
That Golden Girls intro had me in tears. Another amazing vid mate!
Thank you!
That Air Supply dig!
It's a little known fact that due to time dialation caused by traveling at extremely high speeds two months of space time equals 3 years of Earth time.👍😉
That sitcom intro was perfect lol
Thanks!
3:27 Damn, that prop is in more movies than Samuel L. Jackson.
LMAO!!! Yeah! I was just about to type something about it! I remember it from the top of my head in Airplane 2 and I KNOW there's at least one more but can put my finger on it. I'm surprised it doesn't get it's own credit.
I also remember seeing it in The Last Starfighter and some Star Trek episode ... or movie.
Sardo Maitland that's right! Star Trek! Can't pin it down but I think it was a TNG episode.
@@dsandoval9396 it was in all of the Star Trek series in vsrious episodes, usually in engineering.
In Voyager it is prominent in the Pathfinder episodes.
@@Mikef23819 LOL! That thing is literally a returning character.
Sadly I couldn't find the soundtrack of this movie. Loving the intro music.
There never was a soundtrack release. It sucks they never had an official release cause the music is quite good. Quite enchanting and the movie would not have been the same without it. Arguably one of the best synth scores of the 80s. I could listen to it as a companion to Tangerine Dream and Vangelis.
You are the only thing that lightens up my Monday. Every Monday
Glad to help :)
Damn your humor and references were on fire this episode, the sitcom opening was so well done and the 80s references, like the Oh Sherry joke, amazing. Love the channel, seen almost every video!!
It's like somewhere along the line they thought, "Hey, you know what sold even better than Alien? E.T.! Let's do that instead!" Haha
Thumbs up just for the “Ice Pirates” clip.
I just googled it. I had NO idea what he was talking about, saw the clip, BUSTED UP! I never knew it existed but I put it on the list.
D Sandoval You have to see it!! My brother and I must have watched it on vhs a hundred times. I watched it recently on Utube and it is seriously dated but still hilarious. Watch it!!
Such an underrated channel.
Thanks!
That sitcom edit was gold. Nice!
Thanks!
Loved the Ice Pirate clip!
I just checked. Cecil hasn't done Ice Pirates. A travesty, I say!
I couldn't agree more! I think he should fix this pronto! We 8 people demand it! lol
9. God that film was awesome! Must do it!
Make that 10. I love that movie!
“Just spreading the good word and trying to save my ass.”
This is the only way to watch these kinds of movies. Brilliant, as always, looking forward to your next one.
A Lifeforce reference? You earned my sub!
Has anyone else noticed how so many of these "outer space" movies have tons of product placement? First 2001, Alien, then this movie and worst of all was Species 2.
The golden girls bit is pure genius.
Thank you! I was going back and forth between that and Three's company but GG worked better
Omfg Gar as Himself....you deserve a syndicated show!
The alternity reference, i love that
Sweet a new video!, just plowed through the back log of good bad movies over the past 2 weeks. Loving the videos
Thanks!
Oh god I laughed so hard at the sitcom sequence
Gotta love Golden Girls hahaha
picked this vhs up for 25 cents, my kids loved it, so safe for the little ones if you find it
That Golden Girls segment got me,
it got me good.
I laughed so hard at the Golden Girls theme song bit! XD
:)
Sorry for the wall of text in advance, but I really wanted to comment on this video/movie as I can barely express how happy I am for Star Crystal to be featured on your channel, Cecil. Your channel is one of my favorite things on CZcams as it is, but with this video, I'm compelled to write this overly long comment instead of just keeping on lurking as I did for the past few years. So here is the story of why I fell in love with this movie:
For some background: Once a week I'm having a movie night with one of my best friends (+ irregularly being joined by other friends and my wife) where we usually watch two or three movies, and we have been doing this for more than a decade. Needless to say that we have watched quite a bunch of movies over the years. When you do watch this many movies, then you get a feeling for what to expect from a movie in terms of script/plot, the characters (+ characters' development) and the general checklist of what is to be included in a movie depending on its genre. Therefore, one of the biggest things I (or rather: we) appreciate in a given movie is the ability to excite us with being somewhat unpredictable and showing us things we haven't seen before (or showing things in a way we haven't seen before). This also opened us up more and more over time towards a taste for b movies, as those feel as if being less tied down to the rules of what is supposed to be in a movie, as well as how things are supposed to be done. B movies can be a lot of unintentional fun, too, of course, which makes some of them worth watching doubly so.
This brings me to Star Crystal: Watching this, we were sort of happy from the start, as there was a lot of stuff to riff about (As examples which you didn't mention: "Mars", despite the red filter they layered over the film, has somewhat blue sky in some shots and features clouds in the sky. It also is partly transparent in the last shot from space where the ship leaves the planet. The escalator scenes in the space station look like they were filmed in a mall. The sound design, among them the laser "pew pew" sounds, were highly joyful for their simplicity. The "space science" is laughable, as Newton's laws of motion apparently don't apply to future technology, and the "meteor storm" had us breaking up due to its "physics" that practically ignore the amount of kinetic energy that space debree usually has. Etc.), but the magic moment happened when the alien star crystal grows a concience and befriends the two remaining crew members, going so far as to possibly sacrificing itself in order to give them a chance to return to earth. This left turn totally blew us away and we spent the last ten minutes of the movie shouting at the tv if this was seriously happening. When the credits started to roll with the most epic sort-of-self-referential 80s song imaginable, we were literally on our feet and close to tears of joy because we were riling each other up so much in disbelief of what this movie has just presented us with.
To be honest with anybody who actually reads this wall of text, watching this alone (or with a mindset different from what I/we had), it wouldn't have had the same impact, but in this pretty much perfect setting, we were simply swept up and blown away by the ludicrous plot, and thus we fell madly in love with this shitty little b movie. Sadly, we didn't start doing this from the beginning of our movie nights, but for the past two years now, we've been documenting the movies we watched with quality/entertainment scores and some minimalistic notes on what we liked, what we disliked and what we "learned" from the movie (partly in trying to not forget about movies too easily and partly in order to make each other laugh a bit with that last "learned"-section). I will leave you with what I learned from this movie: "Conflict is often a lack of information. Though, of course, I’m only paraphrasing the words of our savior, the translucent glowing testicle alien space Jesus who calls himself Gar."
When you said the movie had a tonal shift I waited with baited breath for you to say “then Gar killed both of them” and was actually disappointed when you didn’t say it. Your comedic timing is completely on display here. Thanks.
lol, when he was listing the mebers of the balanced crew at 4:08, I thought he was going to list the security officer as "the black guy"
man I wish I could hang out with you and watch old movies
Yes! I have been waiting SO LONG for you to cover this!
All your jokes in here were great and I'm glad I'm old enough to get them all
Thanks!
I love you! You referenced a guilty pleasure of mine - The Ice Pirates! You are the best!
Thanks!
You know what I realized? You didn't do Tango & Cash!
Looks like you've gotten us into another mess here Tango!
Yes please do tango and cash
We want Tango & Cash!
Tango & Cash is a work art. Blasphemy of the film is not allowed.
I LOVE this flick! I remember seeing the TV spots for it's theatrical run when I was 12 or so. Yeah, remember when movies like this could still be released in the cinema? For many years I imagined (due to the spots and the poster/VHS art) that it must be TERRIFYING! Heh. I've also long associated it with Nightflyers despite them being released a year or more apart. Thanks for doing this one! Also...effin' WIRED TO KILL! YES!
Cecil is the only Movie reviewer that matters. 😏
:)
Top notch banter, great work.
Thanks!
So all of this could of been avoided if they just talked to it?
Yep. A little conversation and everyone lives
I wanna guess after Gar learned about humans, it decided to try something different? Maybe it didn't understand they were all hostile before he learned all that?
Not seen the movie, so I'm just assuming.
@@EarthboundX from what I remember about this movie, he was forced to kill those the 3 crew members in self-defense (the blonde throwing acid and Roger's friend shooting at him, the latter of which Gar later apologizes to Roger for killing his friend)
Ben Sprague
That Magic User, who just keeps asking when they can use Fireball again. 😀
Yeah, just the moral lesson the movie tried to convey.
I will never get tired of hearing you rip a movie you like to shreds, and point out the redeeming qualities about said movie, in the last few minutes of your review. I've never seen this movie, but I do remember seeing the box as a kid. I wonder what stopped me or my brother from renting it? It definitely wasn't IMDB.
:)
Finally a new video! Yay thanks Cecil!!!
I've been looking for this movie bssed just on a vague memory for several decades! thank you!
You are welcome!
I am SO glad you referenced Ice Pirates. The space herpe is classic, almost Shakespearean
LOVE the Oh Sherry joke. Well done.
Thanks!
I don't know if this movie was "filmed in space", but it was certainly written in a vacuum.
FINALLY! Had this movie on vhs back in the days and me and my brother watched it so many times. Oh the nostalgia!
And yeah, I think I had the german version because I cant remember the "comedy"-parts in the end.
Omg the Golden Girls bit was hilarious!
Nice L7 reference! Great review as always!!
Best review I've seen so far. VERY well done dude
Thanks!
I went into this one blind on youtube last year and it left me stunned with the tone switch
You said that this movie was released by Roger Corman's New World Pictures. Actually, Corman had sold New World Pictures a few years earlier, and at the time of this movie's release had formed a new distribution outfit.
I still fucking love this movie. This is one of those alien movies that really deserves a big budget remake.
You're reviews like this one always cheer me up and distract me from the bad parts of life.
Glad to help :)
Yay! So glad I’m home today and get to watch another great vid from this channel!
Thanks and keep rocking 😀
Thanks!
This is exactly why this is my favorite channel to watch stoned.
Brilliant review and very funny. I needed a laugh today.
Thanks!
You made the end to my day so much better. Thank you for all that you do.
Good video as always, keep it up.
Thanks!
It's wild that most of the cast only made this one movie. It's like they were doing an extra credit project in college or something like that.
I think your reviews are accurate and fun. I am amazed you don’t have 1 million subs yet!
Thank you! I'm slowly getting there :)
Great work !!
Thanks!
I wanted to make you aware of a movie you may not have seen. Its call Roller Town. It is a small Canadian movie from the comedy group picnicface. Seems right up your ally.
I laughed so hard at the "Golden Girls" bit. Great "Total Recall" reference, too! Even though I kinda want to see this movie, I'm assuming your review of it is far more entertaining than the movie itself.
I have an unreasonably large crush on Dr. Kimberly. I wish the actress had been in more movies
I wrote a book about the making of this. I was the principal investor, actor that dies in the first five minutes and producer. There is a story behind the story; and it is sad, funny, and prophetic.
What's the name of the book? I'd love to read it.
You got a like for the Lifeforce reference, I finally subscribed for the sitcom bit. That was pure comedy gold.
Thanks for the sub!
Both an Ice Pirates and an Alternity reference, Righteous.
Haha no way! I wouldnt of noticed the two Millennium Falcons. What a great tribute/easter egg.
That synth score in the beginning sounds like an underwater level in a retro video game xD Love it
thank you for being a friend!!!
I love this episode!
Another good one, keep it up
This movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I saw it decades later and couldn't stop laughing.
This is probably my favorite episode so far.
Thanks!
Your observations are very astute.
Alternity! Havent played that in years. Crazy seeing that reference in a two year old vid....
You caught me off guard with the Ice Pirates reference. I forget that flick existed.
I love this channel!
:)
That red flashing space prop was my favorite character.
YES!!! finally, an Ice Pirates reference! freakin love that movie.
I have not seen that movie but I have the feeling this video here is the best version of it. :D
Definitely going to give it a watch! Love the channel bro!
Thanks!
That cut with Golden Girls was Epic!!!
Thank you!
Horror movie turns into space sitcom. I'd buy that for a dollar.

There was a person, who was put in charge of set design and such, and they decided, for whatever likely drugged fueled reason, that the best way to make the doors like scifi, is to buy two Millenium Falcon toy ships, and glue/spraypaint them on. The thing is I don't even believe they went that far, as they either split the ship in half and attached both halves on the doors, or the even more cheaper, lazier way, they made one door and than edited it to be two by flipping it in editing, cause the shapes and such look perfectly mirrored.
Also, human evolution becoming Bible Study feels...strangely accurate for how were going right now...
Have you already reviewed "Moontrap" with Bruce Campbell and Walter Koenig? That movie would be perfect for your channel.
I don't know if you saw it at this point, but he did I think.
Oh my glob, i had to laugh so hard about the Sitcom joke! Love this channel
Thanks!
