Yes, that is his real voice. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in the 1980's. He absolutely sounds as good or better live than he did in recording. He would change up pacing of the songs sometimes and that gritty voice he has would virtually shake you when he hit it right. Amazing talent. Once in a generation amazing! This song was so well written by Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers took this and ran with it taking it far beyond just words. The passion of his performance here was incredible. Never apologize about YOUR reaction. This definitely hit you where it mattered and you got the message the song was putting forth. I've heard this song so many times and I still tear up with the passion that he offers.

    • @oregonchick76

Exactly! The thing to focus on isn't, "I don't want a dude singing like this to my girl," it's being smart enough to know, "I should play this for my girl and tell her it makes me think about her." There is MAGIC in this song, especially as performed by Kenny Rogers.
Other options: "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers or "Something" by the Beatles or "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. A more contemporary version of this effect would be "Let It Be Me" by Ray LaMontagne and of course, "Tennessee Whiskey" as performed by Chris Stapleton (which basically every reaction channel ever does).

So amazing to see younger folk like yourself discovering & truly appreciating such great, old school music & the amazing & talented performers, who made it all so real! I was fortunate to have seen Kenny, LIVE in concert, several times. Kenny was most definitely the real deal, who did everything from folk-to rock- to country & crossed over into “popular music”, especially with amazing ballads, & classic duets! Maybe you should check into his stuff with “Kenny Rogers & the First Edition”, or his duets with the likes of Kim Carnes (“Don’t Fall in Love With a Dreamer”) or Sheena Easton (a redo of Bob Seeger’s song, “We’ve Got Tonight”), & Dolly Parton (“Islands in the Stream”) You’ve actually given me a little hope for the future! Kenny Rogers was a huge Country star, in the late 70's. That's why you never heard of him. This song happened to be the icing on the cake to cement his legacy, a huge hit for him, from 1980, and led to many more hits and years of beloved music. My opinion his biggest hits (as a solo artist) are from 1977 (Lucille) to 1983 (As mentioned by Debbie, Islands in The Stream - wrote by the Bee Gees, and We've Got Tonight - wrote by Bob Seger). Realize he was before Alabama (huge Country band), Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley's dad/Old Town Road), or before the legendary Garth Brooks. When people like the Bee Gees and Lionel Ritchie want to write songs for you, you know your pretty legendary. His remake of a Bob Seger classic wasn't anything to sneeze at either. So he had Soul/R&B/Disco/Rock musicians handing him hits.

Kenny Rogers and Lionel Ritchie were friends for 40+ years. They have both acknowledged that in various interviews. It dated back to when First Edition played shows with The Commodores. Lionel has said his favorite Kenny Song is Ruby. He even sang it with him on a very early 2000's show On CMT that I can't recall the name of. They put artists together that were influenced by an older artist like the Los Lonely Boys and Ronnie Milsap etc. Kenny and Lionel talked about their long friendship during their episode. I remember Lionel flubbed up the final line of Ruby and had to resing it.

Kenny Rogers has done country for a lot of years. He crossed over into what I call easy listening/soft rock. The man just has a way of singing that everyone can respond/react to. Last year he passed away. He definitely was a chick magnet! His deep voice is killer man!
