- Ashok Kumar (13 October 1911 - 10 December 2001), born Kumudlal Ganguly and also fondly called Dadamoni, was an Indian film actor who attained iconic status in Indian cinema. He was honoured in 1988 with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest national award for cinema artists, by the Government of India and also received the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for his contributions to Indian cinema. He is considered to be one of India's finest ever actors, playing leading, negative and character roles with equal panache.
He was the first ever SUPERSTAR of Indian film industry.

@@rohan34 He was the first singing superstar of India. But, Dadamuni was the first acting superstar of India. He became the first superstar of Indian cinema, after the release of 'Kismet' in 1943, which is considered as the first blockbuster movie of Indian cinema.
He was the greatest actor of India, his presence means business be it happiness, intelligence, family. I rate him higher than any actor.

Two statements of Ashok Kumar were really touching towards the end of this interview: One, where he says that Tagore, Rasogulla and Ashok Kumar have long crossed the border of Bengal and become "Indians (भारतीय)"; and two, his belief in the quote of Giita: "कर्मण्ये वाधीकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन"!!
When he used to say... Beta.. In any dialogue, people gets assured that he is bringing peace and thereby settling with disturbed mind.. He perhaps developed a goodness to meet with own God, if somebody is really there.. Such sound.. Beta still haunts . Thanks to him...

Was he the best actor ever? Effortless acting taken to new heights by this man. Saw his 2 movies and was completely mesmerized by his ease at acting and such genuine acting. 22 year old.
I remembered old doordarshan ad of kisan Vikas Patra directed by famous marathi actor/director ramesh deo in 1985 ashokkumarji was acted in that ad.
He is considered as the first and only mega legend of Indian cinema. He was also the inspiration of Dev Anand sahab. After watching the two superhit movies 'Acchut Kanya' and 'Kismet' of Ashok Kumar ji, Dev Anand decided to become an actor in films.
He is still remembered as a great legend and always be. Thanks for putting this video on iTunes.

He gave breakthrough to Madhubala and Lata Mageshkar, gave Dev Anand his first film as a hero, introduced Pran and Kishore Kumar in the film industry, encouraged Bimal Roy to become a director, supported the struggling SD Burman, gave Kamal Amrohi, B.R. Chopra & Shakti Samantha their first break as film director, mentored Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and many more. No other actor can ever match his great contributions to the film industry.
