- An Interview with Bollywood Silver Jublee star Rajendra Kumar. Interview was beautifully conducted by Ms Sarita Sabarwal ji and photograhed by myself . This is an unedited version, the interview was on air on a TV channel "ASIANET" in 1997. The interview was shot in between the shooting for a TV Drama/Film Rasm-o-riwaz shot in UK. The producer was Mr Gurcharan Gossal and I worked as dialogue writer, cameraman and Director. We were lucky enough to be with Mr Rajendra Kumar for four days day and night. We travelled together in same car/texi/other means and lived those 4 memorable days to their fullest. I was very lucky to have lot of interaction with Mr Kumar and although he felt the schedule very tiring but always appreciated my work. I remember once we were filming a song with some tongue twisting words and the shot got stuck, we did about 10-15 takes but each time it did not work.. he suggested to stop the shooting for a short break... during this break I approached him and explained the meaning of those words... and went through the sequence... he gave an amazing take straight after the break.... then he asked me "where are you from", I said "Lucknow".. and he said (in Hindi) "Only people form Lucknow can have such good Hindi and Urdu", a big compliment for me and Lucknow.

Rajendra Kumar a very Humble & graceful Actor behaving with lot of Dignity & Grace. First of all he speaks in Hindi and give the credit of Hit film to the co-actors & crews of the film.
He gave so much Hit Films that he was called as Jubilee Kumar. At one point of time he had 9 films running simultaneously in the theaters all running for silver Jubilee ( 25 Weeks). Now days the actor cannot guarantee a run of 25 Days and they are called as Super star. They never danced on stage or wedding and never appeared in any advertising Bill boards. Yet they were revered and fans awaited eagerly for their films. The songs of their films were beautiful and still remembered for their content & Melody.

I am fan of RAJENDRA KUMAR . His work or acting was excellent.
Even before I had seen a single Rajendra Kumar movie I was his fan thanks to my seniors in school who were fida over him. When I actually saw his film Dil ek Mandir I cried so much that I almost fainted. After that I caught up with all his movies and cried in every single movie. I became a joke amongst my friends. They would collect all their hankies and drop them in my lap. I remained his die hard fan till he left the movies.

Such down to earth personality he had! And completely unaffected and honest. For people who think he wasn't as popular, they are grossly mistaken. He was a superstar in his heyday and had a massive fan following. Rajesh Khanna's era came after him. My mom was a big fan, I didn't get it then. But recently saw couple of his movies and I can sense his appeal. Also loved how the interviewer was so respectful. Looks like he had a lot more to share, wish the interview could have been longer . They truly don't make men like this now. Todays 'stars' are bloated with their stardom and so full of themselves, it's a pain to watch their interviews. This one was delightful, loved it!

Even today, when I am 74 years old, there is a choking feeling in my throat when I see a video or photo of Rajendra Kumar. In my college days, in my later teens, and later in my youth, his roles and his acting - particularly in films like Dil Ek Mandir, Sangam, Aman - gave me some ideals to live for, gave me reason to look for something valuable in life beyond self-interest. Death is unable to erase the memory of such a great actor. He will be in our hearts until the moment of our own departure

Agreed. I have a feeling that the yesteryear stars were also more educated and perhaps had more life experience than most of the stars one sees today; many of whom are educated till class 9 or 10 and often star kids who are pretty sheltered from real life.
This level of simplicity and humility is rare in today’s day , this is a must watch interview for everyone who likes the old Bollywood.
Thank so you sharing 🙏🏼. Back in the early 80s sitting in from of a B&W TV set...my dad use to often watch his movies and I use to sit on the carpet listening to all the stories from his youth.

These yesteryear actors were respected for a reason. They had a certain panache, royalty yet they exuded simplicity and humility. Their language was clean no matter if it was English or Hindi. They spoke proudly yet it didn't felt like arrogance. And lastly,their conversations were devoid of cheap and below the belt jokes.

The Great Rajinder kumar born in Punjab Pakistan and his village is very close to my Uncle.s city zafarwal and Kumar sir village was sankhatra Sialkot that time.He Went to school in Pakistan side and there education Medium was urdu.And The west punjabis speak a Very good urdu.

There is so many things to admire in the gem of a person who gave us some very wonderful movies. He will live on the beautiful roles that he played. The beauty of Rajendra Kumar was that he came across as a sincere honest to good person on screen when he played the role of a doctor in Dil Ek Mandir and as faithful self sacrificing friend in Sangam. He was loved in his role in Mere Mehboob. In the later years, because of his popularity, his roles had become commercialized in romantic movies that was not good for him.

This is the first time I’ve heard the hugely successful film star Rajendra (jubilee) Kumar speak:
Till today ( September 15th 2016) I never knew WHY he was such a HUGELY successful star who delivered hits after hits CONSISTENTLY in 1960s and early 70s . Today I know the SECRET ( as he revealed it)
1) he always worked as a TEAM member with rest of the cast/ crew, never as a one man show spoilt brat star
2) he always placed himself in the SKIN of the character he was playing/ portraying , and not as Rajendra Kumar the star
3) he NEVER tried to increase or decrease the role he was portraying BUT worked with the sole objective that the MOVIE ( the end result) is well made and SUCCESSFUL
4) He is HUMBLE and SINCERE to the core
5) He watched, studied( and LEARNED) how actual characters ( he was supposed to play) like Doctors soldiers, musicians lawyers and he WORKED hard to learn there mannerisms that he may look what he was playing n( do justice to the role
6) he has lot of respect for Movie makers co actors , musicians technicians and the CREW
BOTTOM-LINE: this man was NOT a fluke success. His success endured for years/ decades BECAUSE he was a SINCERE HARDWORKING DILIGENT ACTOR who gave his heart and soul to the role he was given/playing. Rajendra Kumar sahaab R.I.P . You are a true LEGEND of the INCOMPARABLE Hindi cinema.

As said by Mr.Vishal Agarwal, Rajendra Kumar is the most underrated actor in bollywood till date.No credit was given to his hard work & efforts,instead media labelled him as a Luckey Star.This is not correct.Mr.Raj Sahu & Mr.Girish Shenoy both had written excellent about the Jubilee Star.I met him twice & felt very blessed for that.
