  • Rahul Dev Burman ( 27 June 1939 - 4 January 1994) was an Indian film score composer, who is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film industry.Nicknamed Pancham, he was the only son of the composer Sachin Dev Burman.
From the 1960s to the 1990s, Burman composed musical scores for 331 films. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few of compositions. Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. He also scored many songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar. He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors, and his songs continue to be popular in India.

@@arvinderinderjeet900 Panchamda has composed more than 1500 songs I guess (total 331 movies he has worked on). Out of which even if he has taken 20-25 western tunes to create hindi songs (and given us even more enjoyable songs than the originals) we can not ignore his 27 years work and lable him as copy cat. He has not copied whole songs, but moulded those tunes on his own way to create hindi songs. He has also composed many songs based on indian classical music but some people want to remember his western songs just to label him as chor. Dont forget his work for Kati patang, Padosan, Aandhi, Khushboo, Amar Prem, Kinara, Parichay, Kudrat, Khubsoorat, Ijazaat, 1942 A love story, ShubhKamna, Betaab, Masum, Sunny, Saagar, Alag alag, Dacait and many more. Haters will hate but his music and popularity will never fade. I am 50 now and have done enough research on his work. I have almost all his hindi albums. I have even read book "R D Burman, the man , the music." Some of these songs are clearly mentioned in this book (which is also written after enough reaserch), how he came across those tunes and prepared songs based on them. Apart from composing songs he was the master of background score. He has done many experiments with background score instead of taking music from music bank. Other music directors have copied Panchamda's background music ( example Laxmikant Pyarelal have used Satte pe satta theme of Babu in vinod khanna starrer Insaaf. Again they used RD's Arjun music in Hum for Amitabh) when Sholay was made in 3D , music director Raju Singh could not recreate original background score and he clearly accepted the fact. Some of his music pieces are being used in advertisement even after 26 years of his death. Only with copied music nobody can survive for 27 years..

A Singh that's so true, film scene was at its worst in history back then. But then I wonder, why didn't RD sense that and just step away, when there was no quality at par with his calibre. I truly feel he should have taken a break for sometime and then slowly shifted his focus to making parallel music, not adhering only to films. That would have greatly resurrected him, than the damage that the mediocricy of film world took him into its flow, where he couldn't as a sole force do anything at all to change it. I still feel some of his best works got lost during that period due to bad films, I feel he should have collaborated more with rare personalities such as Gulzar, and... good god there was no one else of quality at that time.

Bengalis have tremendous contribution to Bollywood music. The following are all (at least half ) Bengali by blood:
    Salil Chowdhury
    R.D.Burman
    Hemanta (Kumar) Mukherjee
    Rajesh Roshan
    Kishore Kumar
    Anil Biswas
    Bappi Lahiri
    Shantanu Moitra
    Pritam
Pandit Ravishankar(in a few films like Anuradha)
Ananda Shankar(composer of old Byomkesh Bakshi series theme music)
    Shyamal Mitra(in Amanush)
Satyajit Ray (did the background score of Shatranj ke Khilardi)
    Jeet Ganguly
    Arko Pravo Mukherjee
Tanishk Bagchi (I know he mostly makes bad remixes. But one has to agree that his Vaaste Song with Dhvani Bhanushali has 1.4 Billion views. So there must be something good in it.)
    etc
Rabindranath Tagore's compositions have also been used in many Bolly films.
Najrul Geeti has also been used.
Even Ali Akbar Khan did background score of an old bollywood film if I remember correctly.
And this does not even count the many great Bengali music assistants.
And I have only added music directors/composers. If I make a list of bengali singers, the list will be huge

He devoted full energy and thought while he composed a song taking into a facts and environment of the picture resulting in we got a heartfelt composition which would remain in our minds years after years. These songs would never be erased from our remembrance and minds. World of music always remember his massive contribution for the music. He developed and created a new style of composition which bought forth a revolution in the the then music prevailing situation. We could have derived much more nice and delighted sings if he could not breathed his last so early.
