- Hello my cactus-shopping-loving friends! We are back with another shopping video. This time we head to Berridge Nurseries in Phoenix, AZ. Berridge has a long history in the Phoenix area having been founded in 1938, and it is still a family operated business today. The plants they carry mostly fall into the landscaping category but they often have treasures to be found for the cactus and succulent collector. They also have a large assortment of pottery and decorations for the garden. It's always super fun to check out their latest inventory.
By the way, Berridge holds a significant role in how I got into growing cactus from seed. It was from here that I purchased my first Astrophytum a few years ago, an Astrophytum myriostigma that I still have in my care today. When I purchased it, it came with seedpods. Unbeknownst to me, the seedpods would burst a few days later and the rest is history.
And one more note: Apologies about all the background sounds that my camera microphone picked up in this video. I had my new external mic clipped to my shirt all ready to go... and it wasn't until I started editing the video that I realized I never plugged in my mic into the camera. This was a big DOH! moment. I guess it's a good lesson learned early because I will never forget again (I hope). Thank you all for putting up with my many beginner mistakes!

LOL, a truck would be very useful. Last time I was in Tucson, I hit my favorite place, B & B and really loaded up. I mailed 6 boxes back to my home in the Chicago area. @@cookiescacti

Just discovered your channel! I live in phoenix so its nice to see different nurseries nearby. Ive been mostly collecting tropical plants but the past few years i have been getting back into cacti and succulents. Hopefully i have better luck this year because last summer was rough on my cacti 😅

Oh my gosh, last summer was so horribly rough on all the plants and animals. I'm just hoping next summer we actually get a monsoon.... As you venture deeper into the cactus rabbit hole, think about joining the cactus society 😁

I drive by this place a lot but it seems like prices are a bit higher than I hoped. For large landscape plants you can’t beat the prices at Phoenix Desert Nursery
I agree... Just another data point for viewers to get a feel for what's available around town ☺️ I need to check out Phoenix Desert Nursery. Because they close earlier in the day... Bad for a non-morning person 😂

You can get a lot of these at the Big Box stores for less $$
I leave it up to the viewers to decide if prices are high or low since price references depend on where you live. In some areas of the country/world, big box stores don't carry succulents, in other parts they carry very little, in Arizona they carry a lot. Another information point for the viewer.

I enjoy your videos. I am only part way through but I wanted to post this question. You mentioned the grower marks the south facing side of the pot with an X. Does that mean you need to plant it the same way when planting in your garden. Thanks from a Virginia subscriber.
Yes! You got that right. Keeping the plant's orientation the same helps prevent it from burning.
I always visit Berridge Nursery when I visit Phoenix from El Paso! Looking at the video yesterday made me want to make a trip back out to pick up some of those plants!! You keep mentioning a wholesale nursery there but I can never quite pick up the name. It's Shady something. Could you let me know what it's called?
Ahh so cool to know you're familiar with Berridge! The wholesale nursery is called Shady Way. I heard they used to have retail but then went to wholesale only and then I heard they were going to close the wholesale part too 😭 most likely due to the owners retiring.
Beautifully laid out nursery with shade trees to make being outside tolerable. I noticed that there are no South American cacti such as Gymnocalycium, Lobivia, Rebutia, or Copiapoa. How do they fare in the Arizona desert climate?
Good observation! These more landscape focused nurseries tend to have fewer varieties of genuses and focus a bit more on native plants or plants from nearby regions. Copiapoa are very hard to find at nurseries here, and when they offer them, it's just a few species. The genera you mentioned do fine in this climate but for some reason are not so widely available around the Phoenix area.
