    LOVE how you quickly give a rundown of everything you're doing and keep it moving! For a novice like me, we need only watch again if it's new info. In some videos, it takes forever to watch while they take something apart, continuously talking about anything and everything. Way to keep straight to the task at hand! Thank you!!

    I bought a brand new generator a few years ago. I took it out of the box and assembled it, so I knew no one else had used it. When I filled it with gas it poured gas all out the air filter. I pulled the carb and it was filthy. Someone had left ethanol fuel in it at the factory. It was really gummed up. I cleaned the carb and have had no recurring problems. After it ran for a while it stopped making power. I pulled the cover on the generator and found that the wires connecting the generator to the unit were loose. I cleaned the terminals and putting Locktite and lock washers on the terminals I cranked it back up and it ran perfectly and produced power. I have had no recurring problems with this generator, but I crank it up periodically and check its output with my Kill Watt meter. I use nothing but premium non ethanol gas plus stabilizer in all of my outdoor power equipment.

    Only you can answer if this mower was worth the $$ and effort to fix. The parts cost was minimal, so it's all down to how you value your time. When I do these DIY fixes I don't factor in the cost of my time, just parts cost and probability of success. I've been using a mower for years that was a throwaway picked up off of the curb and fixed in a few hours. Every time I use it I smile....

You have to choose the oil resistant rtv in a tube for it to last. You did not waste time at all. Considering new mowers are still 500.00 and up. I do normally just replace the carb if it is having issues. I have never had one that I couldn't clean up and get running, but sometime it takes putting it on and taking it off several times, which isn't really worth my time. I always keep 2 types of carbs in stock; The old Briggs quantum carb (the manually primed one, with the airbox as I convert the auto choke ones to primer start), and a briggs "classic" carb (the plastic one that sits on the tank). Those are mainly what I deal with as I only fix things up for myself, or to sell and don't deal with repairing people's equipment.
    The only carbs I do bother working on are the plastic float bowl style carbs they use now. I don't like those carbs or the engine they go on, because they seem to have frequent issues, but the one thing I will say is that they are easy to clean out. You just pop the jets out, run a wire through them and they are normally good to go.

    Great job, once again! Whether or not it's worth it depends on the context. Some people have more time than money, whereas others have more money than time. If you work another job where you get paid substantially more, then wasting time on fixing this mower wouldn't be financially worth it. Conversely, if you're retired or work part time and this is just a therapeutic hobby with some extra income, then it's definitely worth it.

    I have that series engine (8.75 vs your 7.75; the 8.75 actually has an oil filter) on a curb picked John Deere. I like it; believe it was an earlier entry for Briggs into OHV during a time when flat head Quantums ruled. Briggs called it the "Professional" series. My JD was made in 2011 as was your TB, according to the TB manual date. I rescued mine in '17, tweaked it a bit (not much $) & it has been mowing for what is now my 7th year. Worth the time IMO.

    I don't think you spent too much money on this mower. As far as being worth your time, that's a personal thing. If you have an assembly line, time efficiency mentality, it would not be worth it. (I have a friend like that and the way I work bugs the crap out of him.)
    The thought that entered my mind as this video started was "It's just cool to be able to do things like this". If I never sell anything, it's just cool, I enjoy it, and I could be spending my time and money on much worse things.
    Some guys spend their extra money on beer and chips, I spend mine on tools and parts. Their garage has chairs and a huge TV, my garage has . . . well, let's just say that I can walk from one end to the other, somewhat safely most of the time. (It's a work in progress). The guy with the huge TV came over and made the comment that I sure had a lot of tools and that he needed to borrow my . . . I answered him by saying "I don't spend money on beer, wine and chips. To me, coffee tastes better, tools last longer, and could I borrow your toothbrush?" . . . . The blank look in return was priceless. I helped him out but I dion't lend out tools. (That is an "Earned Privilege" that very few have earned.)
    Your time. Doing the repairs for therapeutic reasons is a whole lot cheaper than going to a psychologist. And if you get paid for it . . . That's the Gravy. Even if you sell an item for what may seem like a loss, you can still be way ahead where it counts.

I have nothing bad to say about it and really like the rear wheel self propel. I don't need it but do they sell that fuel line or do they just turn it 180 degrees without getting crimped? After watching you take off the plastic to get the grass out, that's something I need to do. My occasional problem though is the rear wheels freeze up when pulling it backwards. Saving this video.. I though the engine had been locked up but when I told the guy that I only started it up at his house he called me a liar. I fixed the recoil problem but then the gas started coming out the muffler so I send him a video and he starts harassing me (I’m only 16) the reason I talk to you about this is because it just shocked me and how someone you meet up with can be so cold hearted. No, I don’t think you spent too much time or money on this machine. Since it was free and because you are running a “hobby” business, I think this machine was just enough of a challenge to repair to make it interesting and fun for you to work on while still giving you plenty of room to make some money on selling it. I have probably spent too much time and, on a few rare occasions, slightly too much money bring machines back to life. In most cases, however, I was doing the work on my own equipment or family’s machines, so the time invested was not a consideration at all and a few extra dollars on parts was still far cheaper than a new or good running used machine. I’d rather spend my time and effort “wrenching” on an existing machine at home than driving around looking for new or good used equipment to purchase.

  • @tjclarke4604
    @tjclarke4604 Před rokem

    In my shop, that would have been around $150 all in, but I'd certainly be in no hurry to get it done, it would be a "make work project" that'd I'd have a tech do when their list of work orders was empty.. At a dealer, that'd be 3 times the cost, if not more, especially since they only sell you oem parts. I'd opt for an Amazon carb for $20, and grab a donor recoil assembly from the scrap pile. But I can tell you why most likely the crankcase gasket blew, likely someone tipped it over so as to flood the breather with oil, which causes the breather not to do its job, thus causing pressure within the crankcase. This can sometimes blow out top or bottom seals as well, just like overfilling the oil. Regardless, yes, I think you spent too much time on this project, but if you are doing it as a hobby, then that is fine. In a shop, time is $$$ and the minute you need to crack a case open, you are losing cash. Back in the 90's we'd always crack into the cases, because parts and new engines were super expensive, so it made sense. Hell, we even used to do valve guide insert installs on L-head engines, if you could imagine, and still turn a profit. Not these days, it's more of a "when in doubt, throw it out" attitude. On this mower, the crankcase gasket is not that big of a deal and I think I personally would have done it on the back burner. Not a big profit job, but here is the thing: You might make a little money, the customer saves a little money, but in the long run, you have that customer coming back to you in the future. Nothing says $0.00 like a customer who never comes back.

    @HomeGaragechannel Hey there! I've recently bought a fairly new Cub Cadet mower, but the seller left the oil in it and the fool delviery guy turned the box upside down which had the mower in it.. Because of this when I first started it up, it was smoking pretty bad for a minute or two, but then that went away thankfully.. Since then I have mowed with it a couple of times now, but it doesn't seem to run smoothly: every couple of seconds it gives a puff from the muffler and it just doesn't sound right.
