The way he speaks about his feelings on chess are a reflection of how the best think about their Craft in a lot of ways. People who are the very best at something often are super bored of it, and dying to try something new.

Competitive play really can kill the enjoyment out of a lot of things. I can only imagine the stress experienced from playing at the highest level of any sport. Sometimes you just want to having a relaxing game of an activity that you’re so passionate about.

Its funny i was listening to this famous marathon and ultra runner on the Nick Bare podcast. They were talking about in his life of constantly having this chip on his shoulder of thinking he needs to be the best of the best, training rigorously nonstop, and never thinking he’s enough despite being one of the most athletic in the world. Always trying to prove something to the world. I also remember him mentioning how miserable all that success ended up making him feel. This is who Ding reminds me of. One of the greatest chess grandmasters the world has seen. Keeps winning. Always has this chip on his shoulder and now needs to defend his title of being the best of the best. Just goes to show you too much of anything, even success can make a man miserable. Must always seek that perfect balance in life. I hope he finds peace in his life
