My advice to you as a Filipino living here in the islands, is that as a foreigner trying to build a structure, you will get exposed to scammers due to language barrier and as you mentioned lack of construction knowledge. Would be preferable if you had a Filipino friend whom you can trust to act as a mediator or negotiator on your behalf who knows construction. Best of Luck!
Very sorry to hear what you’d been through while constructing your own home. Nowadays scammers are everywhere and will always rip you off, and of course this is not just happening in the Philippines. I have my own home built here in Australia and I swear I could have punched some people for treating me like I’m idiot. But that emotional turmoil has passed now. What I see now is the reward of all those troubles because my humble house is now gaining popularity among home buyers. I see why you can’t see the same benefits especially now that Siargao is making its name to the world.
Same here in sweden...they can rip u off also...construction business that's what they r ..wherever in the world...they care less...they dont do the job what they r supposed to...our costs tripled if not 4 times...i dont know ..i think people these days are no longer reliable and honest ...these people try to squeeze ur money out so hard..and even the insurance company gave up on us...i cant detail all its all complicated 😂😮

Tal why don't you find some oldy Filipinos or them lasingos in the streets there to help you build a house? Anyway you're right. I just have a suggestion, I think it would be nice if U enclosed ur kitchen with all glass , just to feel more secured and at the same time U can still enjoy the view from outside. But , it's all up to U ok. I really like ur house cuz it will be easy to manage .

Your mistake is you did not do your research well. You took that process for granted. Always make sure you hire people that have reputation. People took advantage of you coz they saw your enthusiasm without reviewing the details. Always ask ask ask around in anything you are not familiar anywhere in the world. I am single and I also built a small bungalow during the time when I was still working .. though I had also some problems then but since the work was on straight contract like for example my contract was 400,000 pesos for the 2 bedroom and 2 comfort/bath rooms, luckily, I contracted with a young architect and a young civil engineer as partners whose family business is on construction, so I was blessed to have them to do the job .. this was way back in 1996-early part of 1997

I am single and I also built a small bungalow during the time when I was still working .. though I had also some problems then but since the work was on straight contract like for example my contract was 400,000 pesos for the 2 bedroom and 2 comfort/bath rooms, luckily, I contracted with a young architect and a young civil engineer as partners whose family business is on construction, so I was blessed to have them to do the job .. this was way back in 1996-early part of 1997
