- After living off grid in the middle of the wilderness in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for two years we have decided to move on and purchase a new Homestead (on the grid) on 40 acres still up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
I believe we can utilize the old medical weed grow operation for our seed starting operation for our new vegetable garden.
Come take a look at the inside of our new home. It’s definitely a good canvas for our family to make our own.

This old man would keep the grow room. But change it to food production; winter greens and seed starting. Keeping the foil for maximizing the light surround. But check for any damage to the wiring. Use LED grow lighting and a dehumidifier for moisture control (to avoid rot in the structure ).3/4 of the room could be used for food storage and a potting bench area. Musings from a 82 year old.

This much more like it! That cabin was in terrible condition with difficult access. This house is so much better for the family. When you get it touched up, it will be fantastic. The land is much more useable and you have a drilled well. Great house and property! 🙂👍👍👍👍👍👍

Unless it was done before you bought the house, I would spray down the walls and ceiling in the basement grow area with a good mold killer or even bleach with a garden sprayer. Just in case some still lingers. Anxious to see the coming changes and new goat and chicken digs get constructed.

It's FANTASTIC!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! It is the RITZ compared to last place! I am so sorry to hear you were so ill with stressing! You did the right thing - no point struggling, and becoming ill! I am sure you will all have such wonderful times in your new home! Imagine, even the rickety old furnace will make you happy, when you hear the noise, you will be reminded "hey, we have a furnace" - YAHHHHH!!! The bathrooms are a great step up from the 'two holer' or whatever you called that outdoor toilet with the two holes!!! YEAH - it's all looking good! think of the things you can sell, that you won't need - all that stuff, and not to forget, the best bit.... THE WORKSHOP!!!! I can't wait to see all the projects that you knock up in there!!!
The girls are going to learn yet more skills with 'fixing up a homestead'! sky is the limit as far as all that land goes - I cannot wait to watch. Just one thing - do not stress over projects - get friends in to help, do not get yourself ill again.... yes there is one other thing.. it is not good FENG SHUI TO HAVE RIFLES ON THE WALL OF YOUR BEDROOM!!!!!!!!! put them out of sight - to enable good night sleep - just my little tip on Feng shui - energy flow! CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW HOME AND FANILT ADVENTURE! and Niomi can you get your hubby out of the freezer now??? I know he is used to the cold, but you DO need him to have a pulse for all this future work!!

What amazing potential for your future homestead! I'm glad you 'gave up' because the off grid property while having a lot of potential did not allow you to thrive. When you're gone for 50 plus hours every week working to support your family it makes it hard when you're also having to fight just to survive for 5 months of winter. Tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours would have been needed just to build a suitable road so you could have safe access the remote property. That would mean delaying the other necessary projects and still left you with an overwhelming battle every winter just to get to the road.
Sustainable living should be just that and the lessons and character your family have learned and earned after two years fighting to survive will serve you all incredibly with that amazing piece of property. I'm picturing the large garden, the animal pasture, the new barn, that wonderful shop cleaned out and ready to be used to maintain your equipment and vehicles and I'm excited to see what is in store for your family moving forward. Thank you for the entertainment, education, and inspiration!

Lots of room. I really like it and I am sure you will have it looking great in no time.
The kitchen cabinets case work looked well well made. Rebuilding the drawer and cabinet doors, you could just reface the cabinet case work with new wood. It would save a ton of money and would let you update the kitchen. Consider refacing the cabinets, looks great, less expensive. Down side is the layout remains the same.

So very glad that you are in a HOUSE not some ramshackle cabin. Your children have learned the meaning of hard work and that's great, but this is so much better for letting kids be kids. You folks have given them so much by making this decision.
