I HAVE to wait until my hair is no longer wet to do anything...to detangle, to moisturize, to style...My hair becomes super fragile, snaps off when manipulated, and tangles like crazy when it's wet. If my hair is moisturized, and I spritz it with water, it sucks all of the moisture right out of my hair and leaves me wishing I had just left it alone. I totally hear you!

      No. No. No.
I just want to go into a shop and buy wash and fro! It will work regardless of my hair type, porosity etc etc
Its important that we all listen very clearly esp those in the back!
Everyone of you is a unique individual due to genetics, where you live in the world, your physical health etc etc
All people can do is make generic products that MIGHT work with the majority. We are all still learning about black hair. But your hair is no different to the way you cook food.
Par example: Fried Chicken. The basics are there ie chicken, flour, spices etc but then via trial and error you make it suitable for your palate until voila!
Your hair is no different! We know our hair is dry due to its curly nature. It needs water. Now whether you use it straight or you have to do a Doreen and has to play Alchemist, the water required is getting there. Back to the fry chicken, some people deep fry. Others deep fry then pop it in the oven, others air fry.
Are we still there at the back?

The thing is water alone won't moisturize your hair but it's the BASE for moisturisation. Any other oil or butter or cream is a sealent to seal in the moisture the water gives you. Every hair type is different of course but I find that when I use water before putting a product in then protectuve style it stays moisturised for so long. It's the same thing with your skin, if you aren't drinking water it will be dry, no matter how much cream you put on, and same for your lips. If you aren't drinking enough water your lips will also be dry, no matter how much lip balm you slather on. Water is the base. Everything else seals in and adds and extra layer to prevent the water from leaving. Water alone will dry out your hair.

Even during the shampooing process, before I had moved to a different city, my hair would be super hard and brittle during and after shampooing in the shower. After moving to a different city, I can LITERALLY finger comb during the shampoo phase because the water makes my hair sooo soft and workable. And the difference was where my tap water was coming from and how it affected my hair. We always talk about how necessary water is but tend to forget that everyone's water is different!

I don’t add water to my hair after wash day. The first year of this time being natural (2nd time going natural. Previously had a relaxed pixie cut then buzz cut) I would wash/condition my hair and Cornrow with only Shea butter. My hair stayed soft until next wash day. I was convinced by CZcamsrs that my hair wasn’t “properly” moisturized because I didn’t spritz with water every day or other day. So I tried
spritzing and re-moisturizing/sealing in between washes and my hair would feel drier and drier. I went back to only moisturizing and sealing on wash day, (LCB method) putting it in a protective style (twist, mini braids) and leaving it until next wash day and my hair stays moisturized. Buzzcut to nipple length in less than 3 years.

  • @roarlexroar
    @roarlexroar Před 3 lety +25

I never comment on videos, but I think this is an opportunity to spread good, actually scientific, information. Everytime we wet our hair with water, the hair strand is swelling, which expands the cuticle layers (lifting them). African Americans have the least amount of cuticles on average and if you have high porosity hair on top of that (I do too) then wetting your hair will actually cause your hair cuticles to lift even higher. Water also has a higher ph than the hair strand and naturally lifts the cuticle. If the water is hard, that’s also going to exaggerate the lifting. If you don’t let the strand deswell and then close the cuticle, your hair is going to “feel dry” quickly, it’s really the roughness of the cuticles that gives that dry feeling. The swelling-deswelling process can be damaging and produce a “dry” feeling if done too often and if the cuticles are not closed properly. Besides wash day, I never use water on my hair. My hair loves aloe vera juice and that’s because it hydrates while also closing the cuticle (it has a low ph). Sarah Ingle has an interesting video that covers this and more called “Your Hair Isn’t Dry”. I use a low PH shampoo and prepoo with coconut oil (coconut oil penetrates the strand and repels water). It seems counterintuitive, but the less water that you get in your hair strand, the more moisturized it feels!

I think water is essential, the reason it’s the first ingredient in some of the best moisturisers is because moisture is water and vice versa, so
Obviously it in its purist form is going to be the best for your hair, however once I have done my hair until I am washing it again I don’t add water. But on wash day, water is my best friend, I apply my leave in in the shower on soaking wet hair then apply my styling products for a wash n go. During the week no water touches my hair AT ALL, if it’s dry that means it needs to be washed and rehydrated with water, not moisturised, by spraying water on your hair when it’s dry your hair will get dry and frizzy unless you saturate your hair or add another sealant/ moisturiser on top because your basically feeding a starving man crumbs, your hair wants more and causes frizzing, as because it’s not getting enough water it takes moisture from the air, the cuticles open and causes frizzing. I do my method because I do wash n go’s with heavy gels that act as good sealants so I don’t need to moisturise again until wash day. If you style your hair differently you may do things differently.

I've had to revisit this video because for years, I've been having hit and miss sessions with my hair. I want my hair to retain length but I find myself dealing with lots and lots of breakage! Especially on wash days. I've come to the conclusion that my hair wet is extremely fragile and the breakage at the ends is just part of the package with my hair type. But the remoisturising between wash days with the extra water is just a further issue that I've noticed. Firstly it just causes more breakage, when that can be left to wash days, and it leave my hair feeling weird as well as looking more frizzy than before. So now I'm on a journey of just letting my hair be between washes and trusting that my hair will be just fine. If it really needs moisturising I'll try just adding the product to my dry hair (which coming to think about it, I've done before and it always leaves my hair nice and soft!)

If your scalp flakes is usually because there is product, dirt or oil in it, your scalp always always always wants to be clean, when it feels like it's not clean it will start flaking or itching, (it's not actually that it's dry although that is what it seems to people your scalp is actually more oily that the rest of your skin) if you put grease or oil in it you are making it worse (although it makes the flakes go away). Shampoo is not formulated for your hair it's formulated for your scalp, shampoo is not meant to go on you hair directly, you have to clean your scalp to avoid a ton of scalp conditions/problems but you don't have to actually clean your hair unless it is to improve it's apparence, do a botox/keratin treatment or avoid product build up in the hair. Hair is dead protein nothing is gonna happen to it if it's dirty. But if your scalp is dirty you can have a lot of issues, sulfate free shampoos are very irritating usually try using a shampoo with sulfates that it's gentle and try avoid getting it in the actual hair if it makes your hair tangled or dry, you can use a conditioning product in the medium and ends of your hair while you are shampooing your scalp to prevent them from getting tangled or too dry. Again shampoo is for your scalp you don't have to use it in the hair if you don't want to. Most product build up can go away with just water and the little bit of shampoo that goes down the hair strands when your shampoo your scalp. Never ever ever put conditioners in your scalp, your scalp always wants to be clean not coated like the hair wants, and a lot of conditioners are very irritating for the scalp, they are meant for the hair. Try to avoid getting product on your scalp. Basically: shampoo: meant for your scalp not for your hair. Conditioner: meant for your hair not for your scalp. Keep your scalp clean, don't try putting conditioning products in it, your scalp is skin not hair. My mom is a dermatologist she treats a lot of scalp conditions, she is always telling me how important it is to keep the scalp clean, all this info came from her.

I know curly/kinky hair is way easier to shampoo with sulfates free shampoo but a lot of sulfates substitutes are very irritating and don't clean your scalp as well as sulfates, try using a sulfate shampoo at least every once in a while, if not product can accumulated in your scalp and start itching over time.

@@_SZNN i think some people were confuse about that too bc of co washing i co wash bc my hair is curly to co wash properly you only need to wash the hair and put conditioner avoiding the scalp, and then dry and style it bc like a wash day but without shampoo but some people co washing puting the conditioner in your scalp like is shampoo. That's a really bad idea. I remember when co washing first started people were doing that and saying that some conditioners have cleaning properties. After that people starting using more and more conditioners/hair mask on their scalps. Some complaint the product itch or burn but that's bc it's not supposed to go on your scalp. When co wash became big that was a trend for a while thank it not such a big thing any more. But I think that normalized for a lot of people the idea of applying product directly on your scalp. I remember the one time I use conditioner on my scalp it burn like crazy, my scalp itched afterwards and I had to wash my scalp the same week (which I never do). It may work for some people on the short run but on the long run you can develop contact dermatitis (similar to an allergic reaction) to some ingredients that are frequently in conditioners that are not meant to go on the scalp. If you put an irritating ingredient over and over again on your skin your skin can develop an aversive reaction to it. That's why i wouldn't recommend it.

I notice when I pre pooed detangling my wet hair made my hair weaker over time. I also detangled in the shower and I did this weekly so although my hair was growing just fine it was so weak that I would have a lot of split ends that I would have to get cut off anyway. So I may not have experienced breakage but I still wasn't retaining any of that length and that is a lot of damn work! So now I detangle gently on dry stretched hair with an oil and every other week I will go in with a pre poo treatment if I feel it's needed. Hair has been getting stronger since than. The only time I use water is literally on wash day and that is it. I think there is more than enough water in our leave in conditioners and creams anyway. Sorry your didn't experience anything positive with the water outside of your usual routine. I also think porosity plays a huge factor as well. We live and learn👌😅

I also wait until my hair dries to moisturize it as well. If my leave-in has a good amount of water in it then, I don't see the need to add water. Also my wash and gos turn out better when I don't add water. Adding water with my leave-in makes my hair more frizzy and feel less moisturized. I feel like when the product has a good percentage of water in it already, along with being thick and creamy, then my hair will be moisturized for days. Water doesn't leave hair feeling soft/ manageable or adds shine that's a big misconception people have about hair, damage hair has on average more water in it than healthy hair. The conditioner product is what makes your hair soft, manageable and adds shine. Water only makes your hair more flexible and helps define curls. Too much water can make your hair feel actually sticky, spongy and tangled almost very similar to feeling "dry" as you said. What people call a moisture overload is actually too much water in the hair. Unless you are trying to define curls or avoid flakes if you're using a lot of defining/conditioning products it's really not necessarily to use a ton of water during your hair care routine. Water is good but what is actually making your hair feel healthy, soft and protectining it from getting damaged is the conditioning and "sealing" (oil/grease) products. Use the amount of water you feel like your hair wants/needs and works with the amount of products that you are using. It’s the fact that some of y’all still in the comments arguing about why SHE needs water and how SHE did it wrong for me. 🙄
Everybody hair is different and most of the CZcamsrs y’all watch are low porosity she said in the video she is HIGH porosity.
She said exactly what I’ve found out and that is water does not help some of us high po girls because it evaporates out too fast for us.
    I’ll explain further
If you are high porosity it means your hair soaks up water as soon as it touches your hair meaning if you wet with water first and then apply a cream and sealant only so much of that cream can go into your strands because they are already filled with water so once that water evaporates in 3.1 seconds your hair will feel dry. Which is why a lot of high po girls have to remoisturize every 2-3 days.
If you apply your cream first (which most of them contain water as a first ingredient) then your strands are soaking up moisturizing ingredients AND water at the same time so it’s going to stay moisturized longer because there’s more space for the penetrating ingredients to enter the hair because the hair isn’t already full from water thus the hair stays moisturized longer.
She just gave the high po girls the hack to not having to moisturize every 2-3 days. With this method high po girls can moisturize at the same amount of time as low po girls (1-3 weeks)
I guess this what she meant by pea brains 🤧😂

I’ve discovered i don’t like my hair dripping sopping wet when styling or moisturizing either
(Or even when applying regular conditioner after shampoo)
I like my hair to be just damp, not dripping with water anymore, and if I DO end up needing more water (like if a product is too thick or something, I’ve found it works much better to add a little bit of water to my hands and water down the product itself, not soak my hair directly. This way, I get the water I need for moisture but it is added to the emulsion in a form that can be absorbed and retained and not just squirted on the hair where it will evaporate.
I have low porosity hair and have a very shiny, flat cuticle that is hard to penetrate. I used to do my hair completely drenching wet and any product I tried to add would literally just slide right off my hair like a damn waterfall.

-Water is the only hydrator that there is
-your hair is probably just dry asf… it takes a while to establish a routine but you should get your water checked
    - I know you only want to wear your hair curly but truthfully if you got it professionally straightened it would be very broken.. you’re not using any water and the creams are only temporarily fixing your hair strands.. your hair looks amazing while it’s curly though!
-aloe Vera is a protein so it needs to be rinsed out… that could also be eating your strands. The damage is all along the hair shaft so you won’t see it when it’s curly
    - you said you haven’t used a comb in years or gotten a proper detangle and you also don’t trim (I would barely call it dusting) so you could have a lot of hidden damage
    - maybe you should just get one professional blowout and trim just to be sure?? but ultimately you are getting the results that you want.. I just don’t think many other ppl realize how this will look when their hair has been straightened. What works for you is great, but everyone else should beware if you like to alternate between straight and curly hair. Check out Cyn doll’s channel if you want to alternate between curly/straight!

Kinda like when people have oily skin but still have to use a moisturizer.. which in turn helps the oiliness. Your hair is probably thirsty for water…

I wanted to post everything you just said 😂 so thank you. My hair was the same length as hers and I was following the SAME routine but my scalp was driving me crazy. I shaved my head bald over quarantine and stopped using oils and butters. Whole new head of hair. Now I wash 1-2 times a week and my lil pen coils stay juicy and my scalp don't itch. Long hair isn't always healthy.

I don't use plain water in my moisture routine anymore. For the past 2 years I've been using rose water as my base. So after I do my wash routine and rinse out my deep conditioner I spritz rose water all over my hair seal with an oil and butter cream to lock all the moisture in.

Crazy, cause I realized that the LOC method doesn’t work for me either. I also have really high porosity hair and type 4. I don’t use water anymore. It doesn’t work for me and I need to listen to my hair even if other ppl with my hair type say that it works for them

I know everyone's hair is different, but my hair dries out when it's not watered. My hair is like a plant, if I don't water it, it breaks. Also, Water is my 1st ingredient when I do my LOC, and it makes it really soft🥰

Since you are a hair channel, I think its important that you had a go and it didnt work out! No harm done.😉
Im low pro. My scalp and hair is too parched just for water. I have to use glycerine, fenugreek, macadamia oil and rose water.
However Ive seen people use hair conditioner and diluting it with water.
Or you can get those milky leave ins.
People need to learn to experiment with their own hair and find out what works for their hair. Some us are in a lockdown. Perfect!

I feel you girl. Since I left Florida to move to Georgia I can feel a difference when washing my hair with the water here. I’m told the water in Georgia is harder than in Florida soooo I’m like wth🙄 washing my hair is ok but using it to moisturize is a no lol. Either bottled water (my mom is gonna kill me😅) OR find a liquid leave in

I use to soak my hair in water everytime I moisturized but I realized it doesn’t work since I have low porosity 4a hair. I also noticed my hair would tangle a lot and I would get a lot of fairy knots when I used a lot of water almost everyday and let it shrink up. I have long mid back length hair. Now I’m using a water based spray and butter cream to moisturize my hair. I still follow the loc method with my water based rose water spray, olive oil, and butter cream. I also still wash my hair once a week since I work out a lot but I only use a lot of water on my hair on wash day. I also keep it stretched now with braids and scrunchies ( using the banding method ) and I love it. ❤

Sis! Try some aloe Vera juice infused with hibiscus and fenugreek! You will love it. Added bonus when you mix some rose water! Had same experience as you when I decided to take care of my hair using more natural ingredients. Mybhaor is jot thock as it used to be and that makes me sad. Now I only use water when I wash my hair, if it's mixed with aloe Vera gel or juice, or if it is infused with herbs for tea rinses. Never again am I using straight water, if I can help it.

Hey, I use filter water on my hair that comes out of my Zero Water filtration that put in my spray bottle. because in United states our water filtration system is trash because lack of regulation by the government and states. Some states like California, Michigan,Texas really have one of the worst water in our country. If want to know what in your state water system go to www.ewg.org. I can see why you don't use water on your hair to moisturize. Hope this helps.❤
