The Cheapest Meal You Can Get in Reykjavik Iceland

- It's expensive to travel around my country and cheap dining options can't be found all around but this one is my favourite and but when I worked nearby, I used to come here quite often as I'm getting a bit tired of the usual burger stuff.
Costco is not included in the petrol price list, for some reason.

Icelandic lamb is the tastiest in world
As is the pork and the trout and all dairy products. Try caramel pykkmjölk over hobnobs!
I totally agree :)
Thanks Just Icelandic. It’s interesting to see the price differences.
Thanks and welcome :)
I cannot say enough about how delightful your videos are🥰❣️ I see myself riding my bicycle all over your beautiful landscape (maybe I’ll glimpse a Troll or two😉)🤗😁
Thanks a lot :) going on a tour today :) hoping for good light and greetings from Iceland :)
I went to an Ikea in the U.S., once. I ate at their restaurant. It was a new experience for me. I never expected food to be served in a furniture store.
Yes it's a bit odd :)
Costco and IKEA, we would have killed to have them around in 1980! Sort of strange to see these brands in Iceland.
PS - cheapest meal place when I was stationed at NAS Keflavik (off the base) was a little hut like hotdog stand on the road to the international airport terminal. Nothing like a lamb dog on a fresh bun with tangy brown mustard.
Before 1980 it was only KFC :) hardly a burger to be found :)
I love these videos, I am coming over to Iceland at the beginning of May on my Motorbike, hopefully not too many cyclists about and the snow has gone from the roads 😁
The snow will be gone, its a promise 😊 and welcome to the volcano island 😊
In 2002 I survied on tons off dried fish. I used buses and hiking to get around. Hitchhiking was working too.
Dried fish aint bad a all :)
I'll have the plokkfiskur, please. :)
Be my guest :)
I must have missed this video during the summer. I have only been to your wonderful country once and I long to return.
I always appreciate your insight and thoughtful analysis. This video, though - it touched me in an unexpected way; at the end you showed some older (some would say “antique”) tractors and it reminded me of my grandfather. When I was younger, I would go to antique tractor shows in the U.S. Midwest. I just loved to hear him talk and tell stories of when he was young and I’m sure he enjoyed passing along his knowledge and spending time with me. Thank you for conjuring up those memories.
Always welcome :)
During my visit in 2016, I enjoyed Reykjavik's Mulakaffi, near the Hilton Nordica. I don't remember if it was a bargain, but I do remember its delicious mushroom soup and the many firefighters who came for lunch. Good times!
Yes Múlakaffi is a golden classic :)
I don't remember that place but I did eat at Askur about a block or two from the Hilton. Also the revolving restaurant, Kaffitar Perlan, surprised me. Was not as expensive as I expected it to be.
Husband and I honeymooned in Reykjavik. We purposely booked an apartment style hotel room so that we had a kitchen in our room. Thankfully there was a Bonus supermarket nearby and we cooked most of our meals. We still ate out some, but we like cooking and it saved us money.
Yes that's right, it's the right thing to do when possible and I hope you had a good time, and greetings from Iceland :)
Another place that I like is in Borgarfjordur. The Alfacafe. I visit the puffins and then have the fish soup in the Alfacafe. The town is worth the visit. All the small areas to see. And because it is out of the way you do not have the crowds. One thing I learned from all my visits to Iceland is this. The best time to visit tourist places is after 6 pm. All the tour busses have left and most of the other tourist. In July or Aug. the sun will be up. Quick story. My wife and I were on a hill in Seydisfjorjur watching the sun set. She asked what time it is. I looked at the clock in the car and told her it was broken. It had all zeros. No she says it is midnight. Sunset at midnight. Who would have thought. Linda and Ben
It's really nothing like sunset at midnight :)
Love the humor.
Thanks :)
When I'm next ferry piloting through Iceland I'm going to definitely eat at Ikea, if I'm really clever maybe I can manage to spend the night there too...
Yes they have many fine beds there 😊
😂
Really usefull video, was thinking about a trip there with my son. I will use your tips when i get there! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! and welcome to Iceland :)
Meals look great there… Noticed i hadn’t seen a MacD, Arbys or any other corporate restaurant… As always, beautiful views…
Last time we were there in 2015 we noticed there were fast food restaurants outside of Reykjavik. I want to say Applebee’s but can’t remember for sure, I do remember we were sad to see that AND the multiple hotels that were being built in Reykjavik itself. Really bummed out they put a Hilton in the parking lot of the bus Station 😐
Thank you so much 🤗
Love this! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it and welcome :)
Thanks for the tip!
Happy to help!
Recently returned from Iceland (Sept 2023) and given the inflation we've had in Canada the last 1 - 2 years, I didn't find the restaurants as outrageous as I thought considering that there is no tipping. At the end of the day in CAD the costs were fairly close. Fell in love with Plokkfiskur! Next trip will be a very different one, off the beaten path.
The one bigger bargain I found not food related was buying Blue Lagoon products at the duty free at the airport. Made my rosacea go away. Still not cheap but about 8800 ISK versus 12000 ISK.
This is great! We are fortunate to have an IKEA just a few minutes away from us. We are hoping to visit when we are in Iceland. Thank you.
Welcome to Iceland :)
Thank you!
You're welcome!
We like to go self-catered when visiting Iceland. We like to hide away in a remote summerhouse and live off the bounty of Bónus! All joking aside, I got an amazing leg of lamb from the Akureyri Bónus. If we are feeling posh, we go to Hagkaup. Thanks for the Ikea tip though- that Plokkfiskur looked good. We normally go to the Reykjavík fish bar on Tryggvagata if we eat out as the food is good and not too expensive. Occasionally we go crazy and visit Fiskfélagið, as their set menus are amazing. Sometimes they add a bit of excitement by making their deserts blow up. They are also quite liberal with discount vouchers for your next visit. I used a voucher they gave me in 2019 when we went back there in 2021. At the end, they gave me the crumpled voucher back and said use it again next time!!!
Thanks a lot for your great input here :) and greetings from Iceland :)
Its the IKEA strategy to provide cheap food, the plan is to make you buy something in the store. Its the same thing in Sweden.
Simple and effective
I live 5 mins away from IKEA 🤠 haven’t been there in over a year … now i’m craving IKEA food!!!
Yes they should pay me a commission after that one :)
If you're travelling along the south coast through Jökulsárlón, Nailed It Fish and Chips is a good price buy and by far the best I've ever had around the world
Thanks :)
We rented an apartment near Hallgrimskirkja and cooked many meals there. Amazing quality of food, the BEST eggs, chicken and Smjor, Icelandic butter! Even the Bonus store brand bread was amazing!!!
Sounds great :) and greetings from Iceland :)
I always go to IKEA for lunch when I go to Reykjavik :)
Me too, miss them a bit from up north but moving back south soon, good option to have around
I'm hoping to see the volcano, but praying it will get OK for you all, I know I'm visiting but must be worrying for you that live with it on your door step
Tak :)
Welcome
One of the places my daughter found when I brought her to Iceland in 2019 was a place called Reykjavik Street Food but it seems to have moved from where it used to be. I remember it being on Laekjargata near the Hard Rock Cafe but they seem to now be located at Skolavordustig 8,. It is not as inexpensive as the Ikea but it is less expensive than most other places in the city center area.
I think it's still downtown, have to check some day and thanks
Me and my eldest sons just ate at IKEA Riga (Letland) yesterday. It is also pretty cheap there! But the hotdogs here are much cheaper though- they cost 0,50 € per piece.
Speaking of eating cheap and tasty, I really loved one restaurant in Selfoss- you pay 2000 ISK and eat as much as you can! Even if I don't eat huge portions, nearly 15 € are not so bad for a Latvian, either, because you can choose from several dishes; dessert and drinks are included. On Fridays there is a special "festive" menu with steaks etc. served by a nice Asian guy.
Another cheap and tasty place is a Thai restaurant in Thorlakshöfn. Very small, simple but I liked it! 👌🏻And the same principle- pay once, eat as much as you can.
Thanks for this good information, might give it a try when drive trough next time :)
@@JustIcelandic I just looked up the place in Selfoss- it's called Hvitahusid, it's a cheap place to eat at days and a bar- restaurant in the evening, as far as I understand. I can't say anything about the menu in the afternoon- evening time but me and my boyfriend went there a couple of times for lunch. There were some issues but I won't discuss them here.. All in all, I liked it!
Isn't there an 'all you can eat' buffet for Hákarl? I suspect that this would be a very cheap option, especially for weight savers.
Actually not, but you can find it in all food stores :) just follow the smell :)
I live in a country where food and sunshine is plentiful and much is home grown, Iceland is not yet so fortunate although climate change is working against us but in favor of Iceland. I think ppl. should have the sense to realize that much of what is available in Iceland is imported and so naturally will be more expensive, I can understand that it could be a shock but it should be seen as an inevitable part of your tourist adventure, be prepared.
I guess IKEA will be doing well.
I thought we'd never find our way out of Ikea after getting a bite to eat there on the way to the airport!
Yes they know how to trick people into the deep end of the store :)
I had fabulous lobster soup down by the docks. Don't recall it being expensive, just a tastebud treat! Meals are on the expensive side generally but the quality is worth it. Icelandic lamb - wow. Fans of high prices should try Norway...
soup is typically horrendous expensive in Iceland though... compared to how cheap it is to make (except maybe for lobstersoup if they make it the right way).
Agree :)
Thanks and welcome :) and yes the lamb...wow :) nothing like it
My experience with Icelandic tourist prices: Icelanders know that their services are expensive and easily max out the budget of their guests. So, they seriously think about offering budget options wherever possible. Yes, they may be of lower standard, but anyway they are available here or there. But that experience is a few years old. No idea about today.
Welcome :)
Á fer years agi the cheapest MS ís was at the N1 in Varmahlíð
I don't thinks it's like the now :)
Wow, those are really reasonable prices! The hot dog looked great, too. Yum (and I'm vegan). Not just a boring old bun and frank (hot dog isn't traditionally sausage here). I live in a rather lower cost major US city, but you can still pay $15 or $25 US, or more, for a hamburger and fries, depending how faddish or quality. The Ikea one looked pretty good (not like typical fast food), so $10 seems a great deal. Even cheapest fast food here is around $10 min for the burger/fries/sm drink meal deal (well, fake meat burger, IDK about meat prices). I guess the people who complain about the prices haven't been to London, Paris, Tokyo, etc?
London...wow, even for us Icelanders :) and welcome :)
IKEA has one of the best luncheons at a reasonable price. Better then going to a restaurant. Many older couples go there. Coffee is good also. I like taking packets of frozen salmon home. Nothing cheap anymore ... Thanks ✌
I totally agree!
Costco for fuel and IKEA for lunch. I also like the Alma Bakari in Hverageroi. All the soup, bread and and drink for about 10 dollars us. Will start my 8th visit to Iceland on 21 July. I will try the IKEA for lunch. I have been to Costco and use the IKEA building and a landmark. Just take 41 from the airport and you are there. My flight gets into KEF at 9, baggage pick up and car rental I should be in IKEA for lunch by 11. Good start to my first day in Iceland. Thank you for the heads up. Linda and Ben
Sounds as a great plan :)
Well Universal credit here in UK is 74 pounds a week ....Thats one of your cheapest meals a day all week ! Amazingly good news to see vegan hot dogs in Iceland , that puts you a million years ahead of fried battered mars bar Scotland . !
Thanks and welcome :)
Costco is in Iceland? The pride of Kirkland, Washington State ( that’s where the first one was located! Costco and IKEA. Expecting a population boom?
The population is 381.000 and grows on average close to 2% pr annum
Icelanders are shopping crazy :)
This is how IKEA (and big supermarket brands in general) kills everything in its (economical) environment. But anyway, nice info. I’m dreaming of walking the Laugavegur, but it will remain a dream I suppose, time is running out for me.
I hope I can bring Iceland to you as much as possible though my channel and best of luck!
To take a bite in Iceland also takes a bite out of the wallet. 😉 Cost of living ia very high but salaries and living standards also among the highest
The housing cost has been taking down the living standard a lot....
@@JustIcelandic yes excactly it must be especially for those who are trying to get into that "crazy high" market right now. Have heard it takes up to half of peoples salary in some cases.
Ya Hotdog no cheese please, Hamburger not cheese please, black coffee and "french" fried Potato no Sodas, I love fish and chips, Smoked salmon on rye toast with hot mustard and sliced red onion and dill pickle with a stout hardy dark beer if your Please Gilfy
Woha :)
Looking at that petroleum comparison site and the prices, when I convert to Australian dollars, you are paying about $3.50 to $3.80 per litre in my money!!! Currently I am paying around the $2.20 per litre. Ouch! Don't envy you that price.
Yes I just filled up the car just now for a photo tour and man, I'm bleeding :)
Was that a vegan hotdog???
Ikea has several vegan options now, including hot dogs. I’m not vegan, but some vegan channels I watch have done taste tests of the vegan hot dogs and said they’re decent.
Vegan and meat option....
I thought inflation was bad in the US..... 5 bucks for a hotdog? I would rather starve.
It's more about geography than inflation..
I agree, thats too much, even here in Iceland
Had a good laugh but seriously....food expensive over there
Yes, it's hard not to notice :)
iceland is so expensive
and this is coming from a londoner
You got that right :)
Costco is in Iceland? The pride of Kirkland, Washington State ( that’s where the first one was located! Costco and IKEA. Expecting a population boom?
We’ve had Costco here since 2017, Fun fact! around 70% of the icelandic population has a Costco membership!
Well there are almost 400.000 people now
And it's quite popular as well :)
