  • Everyone knows about Iceland’s impressive wonderland of beauty, but intertwined with the glaciers and the volcanoes is a special cuisine worth sharing. Inspired by the simple ingredients of the island, traditional Icelandic cuisine is uncomplicated, but cozy, and we were able to give it a try for the first time ever in Reykjavik. Join us as we taste 14 of Iceland’s most famous foods and admire some of Reykjavik’s most famous sites! 🇮🇸
    All the Icelandic foods we tried in Reykjavik-
    🍊Appelsín (orange soda)
    🍗 Roasted Lamb Shank
    🍲 Plokkfiskur (mashed fish stew)
    🍞 Rúgbrauð (hot spring rye bread)
    🐟 Harðfiskur (dried fish)
    🐑 Hangikjöt (smoked lamb)
    🦈 Hákarl (fermented shark)
    🥃 Brennívín (schnapps)
    🍨 Rúgbrauðsís (rye bread ice cream)

      haha I was very happy with her eating the shark ! :) I was raised eating shark so i love it , but not so much the brennivín.. But you will often find the "hard fish" and shark on the same table and both are very good, I eat 1-2kg's of "hard fish" every month

I thought the food of France, Turkey, Greece,and Italy could not be surpassed, but I was wrong. The Icelandic food just wanted one to buy a ticket to Iceland. James and I did Iceland a few years ago, and drove what we called the 'Citroën from hell' around the entire island for 8 days, staying at guest houses and hotels along the way. You did a much better job at pronouncing things than I ever would have. 🙃
    It's nice that you guys put in so much effort to try and learn and say things the right way!
    My girlfriend and I also went to Cafe Loki while we were there. It was so dang good. That lamb was incredible...and like you said, that rye bread was something special. Surprisingly sweet. Not like any rye bread I'd ever had, that's for sure.
    It was funny to see your reaction to eating hákarl because everyone always makes it out to be this big thing! I thought it was totally fine as well, and the Brennivin was quite smooth. But I also like stinky tofu, durian and other flavors that a lot of others tend to find "offensive". 😂
    Icelandic food was actually surprisingly good. The ONLY thing we had that didn't satisfy us was the lobster soup, which we had at Seabaron. It was almost $20 for a tiny soup, and had almost nothing in it. Like..one tiny piece of lobster, and then all broth. Wayyyy overhyped by tourists.
    I'm curious to see if you guys made it to Brauð & Co. Best cinnamon rolls ever. 😋
    Excited to see the rest of your series. I hope you enjoyed Iceland as much as I did!

    • @ChadandClaire
      @ChadandClaire  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for recognizing our attempts to pronounce things properly! The lobster soup was definitely on the smaller size especially for the cost, but we thought it was pretty decent, but honestly it's got nothing compared to the pysler haha.
      Ah we didnt make it there! Cinnamon Rolls would have been a fantastic addition!

    • @SendMoreParamedics13
      @SendMoreParamedics13 Před rokem +1

      @@ChadandClaire I'm from the East Coast of Canada, from a province that is known for (actual) lobster, much like Maine. So knowing that I could probably buy a full fresh lobster for the cost of the tiny soup we got definitely played a part in my opinion. 😆
      Oh man. You guys seriously missed out. Even after two years of living in Germany and having access to some of the best baked treats in the world, it stood out as one of the best pastries I'd ever had. 🤤

I was back there a year ago.. still lots to see & do.. but now the web is saturated with info about it. The moral: I've learned that when I go somewhere new I want to mot overdue it w/ research...cause it becomes mundane & u end up living someone else's experience. Just a thought.

    I have had lamb in several countries. The best flavor and texture has always been in Iceland.
    The fish paste, for me, should start with a quality cod. Haddock or Pollack are acceptable, as is Halibut. Putting it on any quality dark rye, which has a fairly neutral flavor, helps bring out the flavor of any herbs or spices used with the fish. Also, caraway seeds, which are liberally used in inferior rye breads, are an affront to anyone who values traditional bread making.
    Generally, traditional Icelandic foods are descended from old Norse, as is much of Icelandic culture. Adapted over the past thousand years of relative isolation from Europe to fit the local resources, I have enjoyed nearly every aspect of Icelandic food.
    Had I more resources, I would consider retiring there.
    Time for more coffee.

    • @Sindrijo
      @Sindrijo Před rokem +1

      The thing about 'fermenting it in piss' is mostly a myth and also mostly a misunderstanding of what the process of making 'Hákarl' is. A fresh shark has a high concentration of urea and trimethylamine oxide, enough to make it potentially lethally poisonous to humans if we eat it fresh. When the shark is fermented and processed it is left under a weight to press out the juices from the flesh, to get rid of as much of the urea as possible. This was traditionally done by burying it under sand and rocks, but today it's done in big plastic containers with holes drilled in the bottom and a weight on top. During this pressing time which lasts many weeks the urea in the flesh also breaks down into ammonia causing it to smell even stronger. The following hanging/drying process supposedly removes further moisture from the flesh but at that point it may be mostly water that is removed and not ammonia.

    Brennivín does not have the nickname "black death" , Black Death is a brand from Iceland that was popular in the 90's , the bottles came in a small coffin :) Try searching for Black Death Vodka

    definitely one of the Top 2 MOST EXPENSIVE countries i ever been to (other been Switzerland) but what a beautiful country.. from ice to fire at the same country... to help save a lot of money... i would do grocery shopping and have breakfast/ lunch to really save alot.... make some dinner.. but also experience local food as well.... most interesting local foods in whale meat, shark, puffin! enjoy! blue lagoon is also is a must do. very touristy and expensive but there are also other cheaper and just as pretty natural springs. Fontana Spa is a cheaper option and just as pretty and they do show you how to bake that rye bread underground.. from the hot natural volcanic ground.. which bakes the bread...very delicious and baking experience

      Iceland was definitely our most expensive trip to date, but it truly is worth it if you can swallow the cost. We can't wait to share our blue lagoon experience with you in the next video! :D Iceland has so many fun experiences.

    You say Appelsín tastes like Fanta? Well both are made from Oranges. That said... I prefer Appelsín to Fanta always, even if Appelsín is very sweet... Well as a child I had only tasted Appelsín. In Icelandic an Orange is (most often) called Appelsína... that is where Appelsín gets it´s name. There has been tried to "make" better names for the fruit...none have stuck. (Appelsína is taken from Danish and means an apple from China). I have never put Plokkfisk on top of Rúgbrauð... but eating a piece of Rúgbrauð with lot of smjör on top along with a good plokkfisk (from haddock of course) is very good.
    Putting slices of Hangikjöt on top of Flatköku is part of what is "a must" at every party where any food (or cakes) is offered.
    Why bury the shark? because it is not cut to let out the blood right after catching the animal. As sharks do not have an urinary system (track) the ammonia can kill. To avoid that, the meat is buried for 1-3 months and dried afterwards It is called "kæsing" and the meat is called "kæstur Hákarl"
    9:54 LOL NO! the name is Hallgrímskirkja. Lets make it a bit easier...
    Kirkja is the Icelandic word for church.
    Hallgrímur Pétursson was a priest who wrote the Passíusálmar - that made him our foremost poet. The church is named after him.
    so... start with Hall (strong LL is used here) then the latter part of his name Grímur (it is Í not i) and at last Kirkja or church.
    Pylsurnar 14:54 (The hot dogs) are made by SS (Sláturfélag Suðurlands) It is what is put in the water at "Bæjarins Bestu" that makes those a bit different than at home.
    At last... I hope you enjoy your stay here in Reykjavík, Iceland. Askur (askur.is) offers a buffet every Sunday from six in the evening (costs 5.990. pr person) The place also offers a buffet during lunch (costs 2.990) every workday... but the variety on Sunday evenings is so much more and better that I go only on Sunday evenings
    16:32 Skyr is not really "a yogurt" as you should have seen at the grocery store. You should stir some sugar into it and have it with milk or cream... on a deep plate. with sugar on top too.
