Last year, I filmed a movie with the Panasonic GH5s. Although shooting movies with mirrorless cameras is not new, it is still not very common. People will question the quality of the images, otherwise why must we use those very expensive cameras for movie making? How can and should we judge the quality? In addition, if it is really implemented, what should be paid attention to?

Jesus! - You are the most knowledgeable Camera man I've ever seen on CZcams, hands down. I've watched everyone! You broke everything down to make me see why I need 10Bit or Raw to achieve the look I've been trying to get. You deserve waay more subscribers for this rich information.
Hi Carmen, thank you so much for your appreciation and support. Well, I'm just trying my best to share my experience and knowledge through this channel. For any further contents you want to know, just tell me. I will all the time try my best to share what I really know. Thank you again.
Agreed, very clear technical info, he deserved way much more view. Now for video I will pick gh5s over Xt3
@@RahimandKazumi83 I purchased a G9 which has internal 10 bit for $650. I think this is a great camera to make short films with for that price.
This guy is good!
This was a fantastic review, it made a lot of sense and seeing footage from the movie was really helpful! The movie looks beautiful, congratulations.
Hi Sherry, Thank you for your watching and support. It is really my pleasure that you enjoy the video. thanks again
This is the first comment I’ve ever left on a CZcams video. You’re an amazing teacher and I learned an extreme amount in just a brief video.Thank you for your teachings!

Hi Jim, thank you very much for your appreciation and support, thx thx
Great video! Thanks for the setup tips for my Gh5s
Hi Chris, thank you for watching

Thi is incredibly helpful and informative! i am an aspiring filmaker, looking fo rmy first budget camera just to get started and have some growing room. You really helped me go with my decision on the GH5S. thank you fo rsharing so much information
Hello Ping Hung Wong. You are a wealth of technical information and knowhow. Thank you for putting this together. Now I am so intrigued I must watch Part 2
Hi, so thank you for your watching and support. Just try my best to share. Hope you enjoy that. thank you again
This series is some of the best GH5s stuff out there! I stuck with the GH5 but the wobbly corners from the IBIS is getting on my nerves. Your videos have tipped me over the edge. Thanks!
Sure GH5 is also a very good camera. Thank you very much for watching and support
Yes, in low light condition, i m satisfied with GH5s
You watch the Eng. version but not the Chinese?
Thank you for very useful information! Fantastic knowledge! I use a GH5 and a Panasonic S1, and they're both fantastic cameras in each ways! Now i am going to go over both and change some settings.
Hi, thank you for your watching and appreciation. thx. BTW, what gears you are going to change?
I learnt so much about quality with your beautifully articulated presentation! 💯👌🏻
Cheers from Bangalore, India 🙂
Hi friend, thank you very much for your support and appreciation. thx thx
Nice work!!!
Hi Cameron, thank you
This was excellent information. I currently use the G9 but want to add the GH5s for it's incredible color and low light performance. Thank you and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos!
thank you for your watching and support. Yes, I think the GH5s is a very cost-effective low light camera, though it is not the best, it definitely more than enough even for movie making.
That was a very inspiring and informative explanation.
Thank you for your appreciation. Thank you
Looking forward to part ii

super geniuine video from a director i cant help feeling will go from strength to strength in his career......this is sincere practical hands on review/detail.......at present i am struggling with new cam buying choices for a new movie shot on camels in the desert....ive been fixated on sony a7sIII, a friend is swearing by the new black magic cinema 6k.....the panasonic gh5.....i find it overwhelming.....your video is so sincere it offers comfort.....i definatley need to mount cams on steadicams so the blackmagic is not so appealing to me.......ive had gh4s int he past....i shot a film on the land speed records in the uk on the gh5 and was thrilled with its rich colours.........yet i want to flirt with full frame......decisions never easy ! would be interested to hear your thoughts....best wishes from the uk......keep rolling.......lovely review full of rich practical film making advice.....
Hi Alex, thank you so much for your sharing and your appreciation. Yes, I agree that today making an idea for purchasing a new camera is quite complex. (if it is for rental, of course, no problem) During that time it was a bit easier for me because at that moment GH5s is simply a bit better. But I think, from your experience, you can make a good movie no matter the camera you use. And I am looking forward to seeing your movie. Thank you again
I like how you broke down your decision in detail. I own a GH5S and was curious as to why you did not use the BMPCC 4K.
My film is going to release in Jan 2020. These days I watched it from different cinemas of the premiere screening and I would say that the images are very beautiful. Sure, I think that the BMPCC 4K can also achieve a similar result. Still, the GH5s is a very very good camera
I really loved this 2 videos. Can you share the settings that you use to get the better image with your gh5s ?!
Hi, thank you for your support. Actually, I didn't touch a lot for the setting since shooting Log gamma and 10-bit 422 gets you enough room for coloring in post-production. I left the sharpness as original. Corrected a bit tinting for the daylight white-balance since the original seems a bit blue and magenta tinted. And that's all. I have another film on CZcams to illustrate the way I set the GH5s. The most important is how you expose the image. Thank you again for your watching and support.
Thanks for watching and support
The versatility of a gh5 is better than a bmpcc4k
Yes, I agree with you. But I'm afraid I will stick with the GH5s for a long time...haha...thank you for your support
Both the Panasonic Gh5s and Panasonic S5 are on my shopping list
Then buy both and hopefully, I can have an S5 review soon.
@@pinghungwong9732 I hope you do a review of them both. PEACE

Talking about doing all things on your own.. One need a fully functional autofocus when in front of the camera as a one man production company...
However, the autofocus is said to be horrible on all Panasonic gh cameras and most cinema pocket cameras...
-how good is that on a cinema camera in 2023 where you cannot pull the focus , like on either the Black Magic cinema packet 4k or the gh5s really for documentary work where you are the narrator in front of the camera, or vlogging, or acting on your own short films, monologues, or other types of broadcasting live where you cannot see what is going on due to filming yourself and being focused on your content in the moment of acting, interviewing etc?
-is the GH5S in 2023 still worth it compared to the BM p4k that seem to not have any autofocus? ,,,
of course one set the focus ahead and try to stay in frame ,
but at the same time as an actor, spokesperson, reporter you also need some freedom to move around within a set blocking to improvise and extend your bodily mimic while creating facial expressions and leaning here and there to show what you are reacting to or who you are addressing outside of what we see in a scene...
Then, having no focus-pull person assisting you but still wanting a cinema camera giving you the best cinema image to make it look as if it is film, what camera in 2023 can help you as a one man crew / talent team?
- What would you suggest for film-making short-films on your own where you are both the cinematographer, director and the actor in front of the camera?
Sigma FP? .. hmm, but is highly expensive format of shooting , and cannot see any reviews on it having an excellent autofocus in video mode, really not much about its' autofocus at all , but yes, it looks like an amazing quality in a small form factor, but what great camera also have the great autofocus ?
so what then in 2023 is worth looking into?
Regarding rumours, do you believe that Black Magic really will release a L format pocket full frame cinema camera with autofocus and IBIS in 2023 that could solve all these things for the one-man-film-production company?
what are your thoughts on the demand on such tech in 2023?
What camera should I best choose?
thanks for getting back! Thanks for a great summery of how you used the GH5s to make a movie!
and thanks for anyone with a thoughtful advice getting back to suggest me what to look into...
Cheers from Sweden!
hi, friend from Sweden, yes, you are right... Decisions are made based on your needs and demands...so, if auto-focus is really important to you, it is better to go to Sony, Canon, or even Nikon. it's not right or wrong...e.g. for me, I'm still using manual focus lenses so AF is indeed not important to me. It all depends on what type of production you're going to do. for documentary, I will suggest M43 if you are not acting as host at the same time, or try the APSC format with good AF function if you want to be the host as well. FF...just in my opinion...is not quite appropriate for documentary videos. thank you very much for you watching as well as your idea. thx thx
This is great, I have wanted to see a full film shot on GH5S for a very long time. Where can we watch Embrace?
Hi, the movie was just online days before and I will make an announcement within days. BTW, before the announcement, you may be the first one on my channel to get the link...it's on iTunes and the link is as follow:
tv.apple.com/hk/movie/embrace/umc.cmc.6yvzcvuxre9qtozgc089ajrsh
thank you very much
I have both cameras
The bmpcc4k has more DR and shoots a more cinematic looking image
Braw is a dream to work with too
sure, BMPCC4K is also a good camera
Thank you for your video. I'm thinking about getting this camera with a prime lens. Which micro 4/3 lens did you pair with the GH5s in your film "Embrace"?
Hi Ron, I used Samyang prime with a Metabone 0.64x speed booster. I prefer manual lenses for movie making. I have another video on CZcams talking about the rest gear I used for the movie "Embrace". thank you for support
Taiwan #1
Hi Ping Hung WONG, I agree the GH5s is amazing. I wonder what you think of the Panasonic S5?
I think the S5 is very good. I've tested the S1H, the image quality is a bit better than the GH5s, but just a bit in terms of highlight area, not much. But they are FF cameras. S5 is just a light version of the S1H, so it can compensate for the photo weakness (if you think that the M43 is not good enough for photos) of the GH5s. But finally, I will say that today all these mirrorless hybrids can make good images for both still and video...Thank you for watching and support
I agree with you. Look forward in seeing the GH6 this year at some point.
Where can I watch the films you used the Panasonic gh5s and gh5 on.
Maybe the end of this year in HK cinema. A web version maybe after cinema release. Thank you very much for watching and support
Mr.Wong, where can we watch "Embrace"?
It will be released at the HK cinema in Jan 2021, and online released in Mainland with the same date. For international, we are discussing, since the main language is Cantonese and only gets Mandarin dubbing, so the case of international release will be rare. We are thinking of the web released. Thank you so much for your support

I shot a feature film with the GH4. The Panasonic GH series are fantastic! Where can we see your films??? I would LOVE to see what the GH5 and GH5s can do when used in a professional setting. Do you have trailers for your films, or are the films out?
Very nice to meet you. My film will be released later, maybe at the end of this year due to Covid19. Cinema released in HK and the internet for international. The trailer will be released in Part 2 of this episode. BTW, I also want to see your film. Using the GH4 for a movie shooting is very attractive. And thank you very much for your watching and feedback.

Did you have to transcode your footage for editing? Wouldn’t recording “Prores” to an external recording be better for editing?
The normal procedure for a cinema release film of editing is, we will clone a low-res (proxy) file with the same name and pretended the same location for editing. And after all, we delete the proxy file and relink the project to the original file for color correction and output. Regarding the proxy file, as it is just a reference, so, it can be Prores or H264. Since it is a low res and low data rate clone, it is easy for editing. But we won't generate another file to replace the original for the final product, except for CG shots.
Of course, you may record ProRes from an external recorder. But unless that is an upgraded output...e.g. internal recording is just 8-bit but external is 10-bit, there is no advantage for recording through an external recorder for the same bit rate but just for another compressed format.
And, if it is easier or not for editing is mainly dependent on the data rate of the image, e.g. a 10-bit 4:2:2 4K image would be hardly processed by any computer for very smooth editing, maybe ok for just simple cut but sure be difficult for any effect added on. So the best way would be a proxy for editing and the master files only for coloring. Hope that I can answer your question and welcome any further questions. Best Regards.
@@pinghungwong9732 thank you for the detailed answer. Which editing software did you use? I know that Final Cut Pro x can build proxies and optimised media automatically.
@@davidlstevens Hi David, now I'm using Davinci Resolve. Because it is a one-stop application that handles editing and color-grading in a professional way. And especially for color-grading, trust me, the most professional films spend a lot of time in color grading. and of course, Davinci can also make proxies in a very effective way. Most of the DIT are using Davinci for creating proxies.
@@pinghungwong9732 Did you record .mov or .mp4?
@@davidlstevens hi, I record with mov format
Now that the ability to shoot RAW has been added to Gh5s through Atomos, will you be switching to RAW? I was just curious.
Hi, for theatre movie, I of course prefer RAW. Other than that, I will still keep H264 10-bit. But, I prefer BlackMagic RAW since Davinci Resolve has become my main editing suite and color correction panel. So... pretty difficult to consider at this moment
@@pinghungwong9732 I agree. I am a Da Vinci user too and since Gh5s announced Raw support I have been thinking of switching to FCP, but I haven't been able to make up my mind. According to your experience, how big will be the difference between 10 bit and 12 bit Raw recording? Also, is FCP a good software when compared to Da Vinci Resolve? What is your opinion?
@@pranavnarayanmanandhar7446 Hello friend, Actually, if you have made a very good lighting design and light-up on the scene, 10-bit H264 and 12-bit RAW will not get a big difference. And sometimes the H264 image will get a bit sharper since it gets the internal handling from the camera. But deal with natural high contrast daylight scenes, especially for the sky, 12-bit RAW will give us a bit more latitude. Plus for certain extreme coloring, 12-bit RAW sure is better. But after my experience with the GH5s 10-bit, I will say that the 10-bit 422 with good low light performance is on par with anything, the only concern is if the color science is your cup of tea or not.
Before using Davinci, I was using Premiere, FCP7 was a long long time ago. Doing the whole project in Davinci is just too good and I think I won't change because of a ProRes RAW codec, since I can use the S1H(it gets the Blackmagic RAW) if I have to shoot with Mirrorless.
Again, thank you for your support, and looking forward to further sharing.
@@pinghungwong9732 Yes I agree, Da Vinci's workflow is just so smooth. Thank you so much for your valuable feedback! Good luck with your youtube channel.
With all the new cameras coming out, which camera would you choose to do this type of project again?
Lumix S1H with 5.9K RAW. or C4K internal recording on a gimbal. I just got a chance to test the S1H, the image is on par with those big machines. This review is upcoming.
Maybe even better question..would you do it again with the gh5s? Or maybe consider fuji x-t3?
@@film_insider Sure I will still use the GH5s. Nevertheless, there are many new cameras, the main point is if they can provide 10bit 422 internal recording, I will try. XT3 seems can do 10bit 420 internal, which is not bad. But I have tested the S1H and really love the color science and its performance, I will have another episode on that. and for now, I think the best option of mirrorless in the industry would be Lumix S5 vs Sony A7S iii
Ping Hung WONG thanks Mr.Wong. I shooted many short stories with both xt3 and gh5s with atomos ninja v, so it gives 422 10 bit. Fuji is really great for colors and color reproduction, but that panasonic is always looking more filmy. Like it has cinema soul inside the body.
I was totaly overlooked that s5. I found your comment on s5 comes in right time because i am in search of a new camera while i'm waiting for that gh6v, which will replace gh5s according to rumours.
Thanks Mr.Wong, looking forward to "Embrace".
@@film_insider thanks for your sharing. I myself got a XT1 and I quite love its JPEG output. If I can get a XT3 or 4, I will try for any projects. Actually, any 10bit 422 can already give very brilliant images. BTW, where can I have a look of your work? Thank so much for your support and sharing.
