Everyone would laugh at Larry Bird for stashing his money away

Man broke his back paving his own driveway. It's unfortunate that the iniury shortened his career, but it was a testament to his character.
I think it was his mother’s drive way but yeah
Yup, his mother’s
No that’s called stupidity
That's what you get for helping your mom.
I read that he injured his back due to snow shoveling.
When you grow up never having nothing and having to do without, you learn to appreciate what you have. Larry was smart with his money.
Shine do, some don't.
@@Scorp497 ??

So why so many ball players broke then?

Reminds me of Barkley telling the story of his rookie year when he bought several expensive cars. DrJ yelled at him saying you only need one car, he then went with him to return the cars.
Dr. J, Larry Bird, both are legends and had an incredibly high Basketball IQ. And that also translates to everyday life. Dr. J is probably one of the wisest former pro players you'll ever meet. So is Larry. So is MJ.
As a black man I can say that Larry Legend and Magic have demonstrated some of the core economic values that so many athletes don't comprehend. It takes a boat load of self discipline and character to calm yourself down and not allow a huge increase in your net worth to end up making you go broke having failed to take the future into consideration.
Yeah, true. Dr. J was also like that. I suppose all legendary players have their feet firmly planted on the ground.
One of the greatest players of all time was also just a "regular guy."
Well in all honesty. He wasn’t normal in anyway. Normal would’ve quit way before he would even consider it. This guy doesn’t know how to take a step back. He moves forward by his human nature
No just a deadbeat daddy
At the end it's a 'NO' 😂😂😂😂😂
Old Midwest common sense!
As much as I would like to toot my own horn, as a midwesterner myself, and say, “yeah, we know how to manage our money!”, how do I explain Chicago and Springfield?
Amen. Midwest common sense. Too bad it not contagious.

The money Larry Bird was paid was great but a tiny amount compared to players today.
And the amount of money todays players spend is trivial compared to Birds day
@@mattrodgers4878 i think it was Bird's final contract that signed for was I believed for 85M for the next 4 or 5 seasons. What put this into perspective for me as to how much money this was i compared to the striking NHL. The sports guy made a mention that at that time the entire NHL total networth was 70M. And it got me thinking that Bird could use that money to buy a entire sporting league which included all the teams and he'd still have 15M in his pocket. At that time period that kind of money was mind blowing. Now, the slightly above player gets that.
@@walterkoziol3822
Don’t forget agent fees, pension fund and taxes!
@@yedjonasinvest.653 Yea I didn't. But NFL during the strike seemed like nothing was working out so if this is the case and with desperation to get the season going Bird probably could get at least 5M off or even 10M (by firing/kicking out legally all the players who voided/ broke their contracts. Give them the same contract but with no refusal. If refused they're history. They have a week to change their minds but if they come back it will be at a 25% reduction from what they were getting. Plus they have to pay a hefty fine of 500K. If they don't come back hire new players from the AHL at a 15% reduction rate off the current average. And finally setting up some better retirement plan for the players at the cost of the owners'.
As for agent fees those are paid by the players.
So this will give Bird at least another 10M since all the penalties, fines, and fees will be coming from the teams owners.
Money is worth alot less than it does today ever heard of inflation? 😂
John Stockton use to pull up to the arena in a
Soccer mom mini van, like an accountant
But Stockton is so batshit crazy that Gonzaga had to ban him.
What did Stockton do at Gonzaga to cause the banning
And he and Malone still have their old school flip phones.
I understand what Bird did. My mom and dad always taught me to take away a certain % of my take home check and act as if I never had it. My parents were born in the 1930 so they knew. More people should have done what Bird did.
Thats an old school mentality. You should make that money work for you with good investments
Not out of date. Wise.
He didn't say he wasn't collecting interest or dividends on the money. (Interest: something valuable banks used to pay people who deposited money into an account in their establishment)
@@disturbed157putting it away and forgetting about it doesn’t mean putting it in a mattress smart minimal risk investing with no need to keep close eye on it or interest bearing accounts or growth and income accounts (with the income part reinvested back into the account for a set amount of years unless you need it like buy house or emergency real emergency is the way to go)but study on them before you put your money in them and pick the ones you like and will do the best with the least amount of risk Kind of like set it and forget it And yes that is the way to go have your money you set aside save for the future make money as well

Not only one of the best players that every played the game ,but one of the smartest. 😊
Saying "No" was the right move. Had he said yes, he would have lost his money, and in a very short time, they would have been right back in the same position. People don't change over night.
When you grow up poor and you go without. You go to bed hungry and utilities shut off. When you get your first job or whatever pays your bills, you look at money differently. I've been poor and I will never go back to that dead-end. Teach your children independence, pride in themselves to save their hard fought earnings. Smart man
Cant say he didnt warn them... He tried to show them the way to real LASTING prosperity.
Not only the best to ever play the game but also very intelligent and very humble, you the man LARRY!
I warned you didn't I? Larry Bird
He was right to say "No." unless he felt like giving his money away. There was no pay back coming.
I love Larry Bird he just awesome
He had a home in MA the town over from me. A nice house, but not over the top. You'd see him outside once in a while mowing his lawn. Just a normal dude who was nasty with a ball in his hand
One of the best, and very smart with his $
That takes some big balls to be asking him for help, Later!
His home is now a Airbnb in French Lick, Indiana. I went to a anniversary party there. It’s a modest ranch house he bought and he built on to. It has two extra large bedrooms. One is called the Larry Bird bedroom with extra large jetted tub. The furniture in the living room was customize built for a giant! His chair was more like a large throne. Now I know why he lived in such modest home.
Larry Legend!
I don't blame him at all.😁🙏
Larry grew up in the poorest place in Indiana so he respects a dollar .
That's not true at all.
@@Yoyoyoyoskippy *one of
Gary Indiana is so much worse plus big time crime French lick is small real small this isn’t including the resorts except for the first one that’s been there forever I’m sure there is crime but it’s small time(it’s still crime)there aren’t people being murdered everyday there cause if there were the town would be extinct in a few years And I’m sure most of the crimes get solved because there aren’t that many people living there and they all know each other and are probably related to an extent but yes quite financially depressed but probably not now as more resorts casinos ect are there but most likely have ruined the original town
That's bird for ya ,so glad I grew up watching him so smart on the court and off ❤ #LB33 🐦
Larry's family didn't even own a car. Grew up very poor. But i bet he wished he paid for the concrete work on his mom's driving. He destroyed his back. But to me he is the GOAT.
The goats goat
A fool and his money will soon part.
Good for him.
even now players spend past their means, alot aren’t smart with money. it brings me to a Mike Tyson quote - “Sometimes god will punish you by giving you everything you want jus to see how you handle it”
Guess Bird got the last laugh 😂
Pro sports is replete with well-paid athletes spending large and losing everything. Sad!
A lot of these guys come from nothing so they have no clue how to handle becoming rich overnight
@@ProdByCAV0 It's the same reason lotto winners go broke. Most people that win the lotto are poor and have no clue how to manage it since they got rich overnight too.
@@ProdByCAV0 Larry also grew up very very poor... but also understood that the big paydays weren't going to last forever.
And most of them are taken advantage of by bad managers pr people investment people there are big groups of people that prey on these guys taking everything they have the owners should implement a plan where only vetted managers investment people pr people and others that aren’t crooks that will look out for players that way you get the best out of your team without the team being stressed out bought off ect effecting their playing ability
Don't forget, being a pro basketball player in the decades preceding Larry's rookie year wasn't a well-paying job at all either. It was more of a seasonal job at best while the guys would go to their full-time jobs in the off-season. Larry was still balling during his career by building a giant house for his mom with a full basketball court, he has some nice homes these days, but you can be rich and not be flashy or buy stupid shit. Larry grew up with nothing in rural poverty so he understood the value of handling your money wisely under the other presumption that this basketball money won't last forever. Nowadays, guys get ridiculous $200m contracts before they're even 25 and behave ultra-entitled and even lazy. Players in Larry's day were playing no matter what unless they couldn't walk and were fiercely competitive for the sake of competition and winning.
U may b right, heard other athletes that time worked offseason. Kenny smith,i heard was an investment adviser or stockbroker or something that time, though he was making upper part in 6 figures then.
THE BIRD WAS STILL THE BEST; ALL THE WAY AROUND!!!!!!
Best clutch player in basketball.
Piss poor daddy...

Larry Bird use to mow his own lawn
True Legend.. love Bird

I'm glad Larry wouldn't loan them money.
You were sad the Court made him pay Child support???
@Lg-bv4tz That's a separate issue. Personal loans are a personal decision. Child support is an important obligation.
@@Lg-bv4tzI’ve found nothing about bird and child support
@@Lg-bv4tz Why would anyone be sad about him taking care of his own child? I think her mother got to her and was not nice to her father when she was an adult. I think he disowned her or something. He does have 2 adopted children that he and his 2nd wife raised, which is good.
@@jillthompson1248 He had a daughter with his first wife, and he did pay child support, but he would have paid the child support even without the Court system. They don't get along though as and adult, and he don't talk to her due to her not being nice to him I suppose. I think her mother had something to do with it. He have 2 adopted children with his second wife.
I wonder how many teammates are broke now.
Or how many of those who played in the NBA. I'd bet it is a very high percentage
What a legend
Larry was so down to earth, he mowed his own LAWN!!
As "Magic" Johnson would say; Larra Birrr
Larry is a smart man and understood the importance of saving his money and long term investments.
Unlike over payed players like Tatum and Brown he showed up in the playoffs. People call players who have won nothing super stars way to much. Bird was a super star.
Good values matter.
When I worked at Teledyne there was a humble quiet janitor there. Had been there for 25+ years. One of the other employees told him he needed to make more money or he would be in trouble in the future. Kind of insulting him. He brought in his bank book and shut them up fast. He had saved and invested every nickle he could for those 25+ years and through the 401K he had $600,000 bucks saved.
Smart bird
Having a Dad makes all the difference.
Love how the guy mowed his own lawn from the beginning to the end of his career.
Bird is RIGHT (to tell them "no").
What's crazy is that since bird so many athletes have had way bigger contracts and weren't half as talented as him which is crazy
I still remember being a kid and hearing the story about the cricket and the ants. The ants worked all summer while the cricket just had fun all summer. This reminds me of that
Larry legend would never say no to his teammates
There's a story that Bird made a $20 bet that he couldn't make a 3 point bank shot during the game, before the game.
When the game got close to the end of the 4th quarter, The person who made the bet was smiling at Bird, and Bird said "Oh shit, I totally forgot about that bet" But sure enough Bird threw up a 3 and banked it in, winning the bet. The idea of Bird losing $20 was unacceptable. That say's a lot to his competitive spirit.
The man had no weaknesses in his NBA game, including finance.
Larry legend
IT IS NOT WHAT YOU MAKE. It is what you keep.
Humble legend
Larry was not just a great Basketball Player.
He knew how to save money and spend it too. He grew up with very little money. Don't feel bad Larry I grew up with very little money. I grew up around Napoleon in Ind.
Larry grew up dirt poor. Just owning his own home, and driving a modest new car probably felt like a life of luxury to him.
I'm thinking financial security for his family was important to him.
He did give them good advice, not to be careless with finances. I know from experience you should consider a loan a gift cause it’s unlikely you are repaid.
What's worse is when the person who owes you drops out of your life because they're embarassed.
Barkley spent ten million dollars gambling blackjack. Later said he had to stop doing that. 😮. Has a real heart for the black people.
I pray the Lord finds him.
Larryy Bird worked the hardest,

He did build a very nice indoor basketball court for himself and, I will bet it was a tax deduction😂😂😂
Where did he build that?

He didn’t have to save. He was an executive after playing and made millions from endorsements. The other guys however…
He tried to warn them...
Larry Bird =75 million dollar man
Fire 🔥 advice.....
Smart.
Larry Got The Last Laugh
Love stories like this or movie stars living in the MidWest and refusing to raise their kids in Hollywood. I remember hearing stories about Barry Sanders buying used cars and the team having to call him to ask him to deposit multi-million dollar pay checks because he just had them at his house, no hurry to cash them...messing up the team's balance sheet.
Bird had his automatically deposited. He said he never saw his paycheck.
He signed basketballs for them instead, which they could sell..
Advice was priceless for free.
Thats the best move he ever made smart. Be humble and build generation wealth.
Enough said Larry legend was the best bird ever played the game
Smart!!!💐💐💐💐💫
You can’t even buy a condo now for $700,000 and that was NBA mansion money.
Dang straight lol.. a bad predicament I'm sure he'd help somebody. But to have them blow it then ask? Naw that's alright.
Bird's career was ended by his stubborn frugality, it was building a driveway by hand for his mother, where he first hurt his back, eventually the damage leading to a premature end to his career.
Do you pay someone else to carry out your trash or bring you a drink from the fridge?
Shoveling a bit of gravel isn't an outrageous activity for a healthy man.
There was a player that played basketball during the time of Bird, I can't remember his name, anyhow his father kept his money for him and gave his son 350 dollars a week.. He was 21 yrs old and when he stopped playing ball he had a nice nest egg put away........
I always get a good chuckle when I read about million dollar athletes losing all their money. Antoine Walker, Warren Sapp and such. Just reinforces the “Dumb Jock” label.
Yeah but a lot of that is people taking advantage of them and their lack of knowledge and their youth and that’s wrong. But it’s also wrong to think you can be an asshole because you have money
Baaad man there, and very smart 😊
Larry has a real Robert Englund vibe to him.🤷♂️😊
Some control life, and others let life control them.
Larry would have been smarter to pay the contractors for the driveway. He would have had 2 maybe 3 more championships, and that many more millions.
Probably not. The issue was mainly the guys around him getting hurt. Parish and McHale were banged up much of 87 and Parish was limited in his minutes against Kareem which doomed the Celtics in the finals. Len Bias’s unfortunate death prior to the season and Bill Walton being plagued by injuries again meant that the Celtics had no bench depth. By the time the Celtics made the playoffs they were exhausted and they STILL made the finals mostly because of Bird alone. By 90 it was too late as the Celtics were too old. 1987 was arguably Bird’s best season as a pro. He was insanely good that year.
John Elway was the same way.
But…but I be da franchise playa was iverson’s response.
Save it while it's still coming in.
U lend one person cash & they all want u 2 be the bank. That's how friendships are broken. Don't lend more than $100
If they bought the right rolex watch, they hold their value and increase sometimes, so there's that.
If I was rich my wife would blow through my money too. I can live pretty frugally but she thinks the money is gonna burn a hole through her pocket 😂

I wonder who were these teammates of his who asked Bird for money...
His career was cut short from a horrible training routine.
