  • If you are discouraged with your Engineering classes, or just plain bored, it is probably not your fault.
Many teachers do not explain things well; they use big confusing words, unclear language, and many times seem to forget that we students are just beginners in this!
I show some examples of bad teaching so you know what to look out for

This really hit close to home. I'm a freshman and I'm retaking calculus. I already passed calculus in high school, but now I'm struggling more than ever when I wasn't struggling before. I know my professor is trying his best, but the fact that we are all online is making it almost impossibly difficult to teach and learn. My first few calculus lectures over Microsoft teams consisted of the professor talking about calculus problems without showing any actual examples. We needed to teach him how to share his screen on his iPad so he could show us what he was talking about. And while it did help, it's still not a great learning environment. I'm really passionate about computer science. In my free time I've been teaching myself Python and C#. I was so excited to finally go to college and learn about something that matters to me. Now I'm slowly losing my inspiration. I'm trying my best to succeed, but learning online can be so difficult due to all the distractions and how poorly classes have been managed. In my senior year of high school I had fun with calculus, now it feels like a mere chore.

Stories like this make me want to absolutely TEAR MY HAIR OUT. Especially from first-year students like you who are breaking ground in this new world of Engineering. Thanks for sharing Frank. I tutor everyday using OneNote and I actually I've found it to be SUPER EFFECTIVE because i can draw in different colors, show things moving on the screen, etc. Your professor has ZERO EXCUSE for providing low-quality instruction. Students like you are why I'm doing this channel. I wish i could teach you myself, i know i could do better than your professor. Unfortunately, i have only a couple of Calc1 vids out (but feel free to check out my playlist). I am trying my absolute best to make a difference. i hope to have my own free online books as well as videos out for students to refer to when their teachers are not teaching well

This is insanely accurate to my experience as well, many teachers seem to be forced to teach rather than have a will to teach.
A few years in and I'd say it's around 2/10 teachers that actually break things down and explain in a way a student can understand.
The rest are varying levels of no explanations to bad explanations.
Or the classic of obligatory(and expensive) literature which is written in such complex and ambiguous language that you need to have a fundamental understanding of the entire course to even begin to grasp the book.
It's literally pushed me to the limit of burnout having task after task thrown at me with no guidance and lectures that barely explain the subject.
Been looking at a few of your videos and really appreciate your thorough explanations, hoping it'll make it easier to see the whole picture.

Thank-you! Yes that was really the central message of the video. When people go to the movies and see a mediocre film, are they blamed for "missing" the point? No. This is more similar to Education than people realize. Your professor should be bringing all these concepts and equations together; presenting them in a sequential, integrated fashion that is consumable with minimum energy. Your professor is the "storyteller" in this regard.

All you said is true. At one point in my life, I was frustrated and spent a lot of my time pointing out all that was wrong with STEM education. Then I realised that I needed to focus my energy on things I can do and once in a while, I come out swinging at the stupidity that goes on around me.

Engineering is a very visual field. You can imagine speeds, forces, etc. So when you study concepts, all the words you read, all the math you see should serve to make that picture in your mind more detailed and vibrant. By the time you practice some problems, that mental picture should feel second nature to you, almost as if another limb you have to command and control as you wish.
Teaching is simply narrating that picture you have to someone else. You pick out each aspect of it, and lay it out for your listener, using simple common sense language instead of big unnecessary words. That's literally all I've done as a tutor for almost 7 years.
Yet most of the teachers I've interacted cannot do this well (a minority can). Why is this?
It's a question I've been trying to answer for years...
