Gone From Guelph - OSR Equipment Move Part 1 2020-09-24

  • I like the Montgomery Gentry song "Gone" and I think it applies here: "Gone like a freight train, gone like yesterday... like all the good things that ain't ever coming back". It seems like this was just yesterday to me, but indeed it has been over two years since the end of OSR operations on the Guelph Junction Railway (yes, it usually takes me quite a while to edit the footage I shoot...).
With the end of active operation of the GJR by OSR nearly a month earlier on Friday, August 28, 2022, OSR's collection of locomotives and a few non-revenue pieces of equipment sat on the interchange track waiting for CN's blessing to begin the move to the OSR shop at Salford. Eventually, the details were worked out and a CN crew arranged, but it did mean that three pieces of equipment were to be left behind because they were not equipped with roller bearing trucks - two side-dump cars that were later trucked off the property and an ex-CP caboose that was donated to a local historical organization.
Things didn't quite go to plan however as the train's SBU had difficulty in communicating with the lead engine, OSR #182, and it was eventually decided to run down the CN/Metrolinx Guelph sub without it meaning that the train was restricted to 15 MPH. This made it much easier to chase, but doing it this way left the CN crew without enough time to make it to London as planned so the train would be tied down in Kitchener. I managed to catch the train (operating as CN X568) departing the interchange track, passing XV yard in Guelph, then at Shantz and Breslau, and finally arriving in Kitchener.
The next day the equipment would be moved as part of the regular 568 from Kitchener to London and I was lucky enough to shoot that also so it will be uploaded as part 2 of this series, hopefully within a couple of weeks.
Special thanks to KS, MMC, LB, BJ, and the OSR crews.

If all goes to plan, sometime over the holiday break; I've got it maybe 2/3 edited so far.
