Cold Starting an Alco 12-251
A few weeks ago, a unique opportunity presented itself when Trillium Railway made their last trip to St. Catharines to switch two remaining customers on the Grantham spur. The locomotive for this trip, TR RS-18u #1859, developed an oil leak the previous day and this resulted in the train tying down on the spur pending repairs to the unit. The following day was clear but cold and this allowed for a combination railfanning + 'cold start' scene when the mechanic arrived to start the prime move, a 12-cylinder Alco 251B. Normally the railway starts work really early in the morning so this was an unusual chance to watch the crew start up the locomotive up close.
It took several attempts spread over about half an hour, but eventually the engine fired up. Note that after running a while, the engine sounds smoother, more like that distinctive Alco 'burble'. With the air pressure built up, the train then departed southward to the CN Grimsby sub for the last time with droves of railfans waiting for it at Merritton.
I will have a full video on this move in the future, but in short, Trillium (GIO) no longer operates north of mile 8 on the Canal spur, just past ASW Valbruna Steel in Welland. Declining carloads and a relatively long trip to switch about 3-6 cars per day, twice a week, eventually brought about this end of service to Thorold and St. Catharines. I was lucky enough to shoot this line several times in the last year, focusing on the coil car runs to Trenergy, and will upload those videos as well, in time.
As always, thank you for watching!

CN Milton Logistics Hub Construction Update February 2024
zhlédnutí 707Před 5 měsíci
Returning to the construction site of CN's Milton Logistics Hub just over a year from my first update, a rare bit of sunshine this winter finds that significant progress has been made so far on the project. In this update we find that CN is now using the new main track alignment for the Halton sub around the property where the Logistics Hub pad tracks will be located. This has been expedited, n...
CN Locals in Southern Ontario Summer 2022
zhlédnutí 263Před 6 měsíci
I haven't done a 'pure-CN' video in a while but CN in the last few years in southern Ontario hasn't been all that interesting, so I thought I'd take a look at some local trains which tend to be much more interesting. Whereas mainline freights are dominated by Gevo's these days, with the odd run-through power, CN's locals usually have something good for power. In 2023 CN leased several BNSF unit...

In the summer of 2023, I spent two weeks in Alberta and British Columbia, partly with family and partly for railfanning. After a shorter trip to Alberta last year, I wanted to go back and carry out a more extensive railfan trip through the Rocky mountains and into the Thompson and Fraser river canyons. This video is the first part of a series from this trip and will cover a day spent on CPKC's ...
OSR Move Part II: Kitchener to London on CN L568 || September 25, 2020

Back in September 2020, OSR faced the challenge of moving their equipment from the recently-ended operation on the Guelph Jct Railway (upon GEXR takeover) to home base at Salford, Ontario. Though only about 50 miles apart as the crow flies, the rail route that would be required to connect the equipment with the railway's own line west of Woodstock would be almost three times that distance and w...
Canadian Prairie Railroading Part II: Chasing Southern Rails Around Moose Jaw, SK Sept-2022

My railfanning trip to the Canadian prairies in September 2022 was primarily aimed at CP, and to a lesser extent, CN, however I did manage to get a bit of shortline railroading action as well, even if it was a bit unplanned. My goal for this day was to spend the morning on the 4th Ave bridge over CP' s Moose Jaw yard and just shoot whatever I could, but as I was taking some photographs of the d...

It took more than two years, but I finally managed to catch the final of CP's five military-painted SD70ACu locomotives. When I heard that Montreal-Chicago intermodal train #133 had not only this engine, but a KCS unit trailing, I was excited and hoped that the train would not stick to the scheduled pre-dawn timing down the Hamilton sub. Sure enough, the train was sufficiently late that I could...

White exhaust smoke in diesel engines is always a sign of increased moisture that evaporates. Or it is simply the water vapour produced during the combustion of hydrocarbons and condensed immediately under operating temperature on cold days.

What is that Old Saying? "If it ain't Broke, Don't Fix it?" Yeah, that phrase should be taught to ALL railroad companies. Why may you ask? So that they can understand that even "Old and Outdated" units can still be utilized for modern day operations. Companies like Amtrak are Harshly guilty in this. They should have been taught that they should take Units that don't work properly, and get them fixed so they do work properly, so that, in the future, they could be preserved and have the potential to be utilized again. I call it, preserving some of the past to Prepare for the Future.
