    The Dress Watch
So far in this series, we've mainly focused on watches which have a need for durability, reliability and toughness, featuring rotating bezels, water resistance, shock resistance and overall increased strength. However, the dress watch doesn't focus on these traits. The dress watch is designed to be slim and direct with it's delivery of telling the time. They must compliment an evening outfit as much as telling the time.
In fact, historically, watches shouldn't even be worn if in a formal area, once upon a time, this would have been regarded as being rude, as the wearer shouldn't have a care what the time is and just purely be in the moment. In a modern world, we understand that may be unrealistic which is why our suggestion looks to strike a balance between being accurate to the DNA of a dress watch as well as fulfilling modern expectations...
The Longines Flagship Heritage - what it does
As talked about here, Longines is one of a few companies who still have a huge historical archive of all watches to ever leave their factory with the Longines branding. This means they are masters at creating watches which accurately represent models from their past.
Over the years the Flagship collection from Longines has worn many hats, with plenty of variation, however, the Flagship Heritage embodies everything the range has offered over its existence.
"The Heritage models are a tribute to the pioneering spirit that has inspired Longines designers since the company’s early days."
This stylish classic watch comes in with a 38.5mm width, a thickness just over 10mm and a lug to lug of 46mm. If you're aware of the original Flagship models then this case will be very familiar to you, as the design itself remains practically unchanged.
A 10mm thickness makes it ideal for sliding under shirt cuffs and thick jumpers alike. It's also massively complimented by the long heavy chamfered lugs which abruptly appear from the rounded case.
The main talking point of the watch is the dial, which is emphasised even more so with the very thin subtly chamfered bezel. This is almost invisible to the wearer on the wrist because of the dominant, warm dial. However it's purpose is clear, to draw as much attention to the dial as possible. The dial itself is a lovely silver/cream colour. Thin, sharp distinctive gold coloured indices feature on the Flagship which effectively conveys the watches dressy purpose.

This is a wonderful timepiece. I love the cream dial in combination with the gold hands and markers. I don't worry too much about the date (although I would choose a no-date on if there was an option), but my pet peeve with this watch, which actually caused me to sell mine, is the size. On paper 38,5mm doesn't sound all that much, but its lug to lug length is (if I remember correctly) approximately 47mm, which is quite a lot for a watch of this type. I wish they made one in a more traditional size, such as 36mm. Also, the sub seconds hand is to close too the center. If Longines were to make this one thinner and smaller (and maybe with a central seconds hand), I would buy one in an instant, because it is a fantastic watch. I therefore must say I disagree when it comes to your statement about chunkier lugs. I think that would take away from the elegance of such a watch. It should be nice and slender, but that's just my opninion. Thanks for the nice review!

@Motor City Cobra I agree 100%. I've also owned the heritage conquest. Beautiful watch, and the size is perfect. Classical dress watches should be between 34-36. The Flagship is too big.

This watch has the same diameter and lug to lug as the Lange 1 which fits me perfectly but when i tried this on I didn't get the same impression and felt the lugs were too long but they weren't, they were just super slim which gave off the impression of being too long. So I agree with the guys here that I wish it had beefier lugs.

Of all the Swiss makers, Longines have the strongest claim for naming one of their creations, Flagship Heritage, because their wings emblem is the oldest registered Swiss watch company logo, and that's what I call heritage.
I bought mine as an everyday wearer, so I would not want to see the date removed.

I am so keen on getting this model. Originally, I was inclined to get one from the La Grande Classique collection, but then I came across this beauty and realized it can't go any classier than that. I love the first strap you showed, the Italian exotic style: it matches perfectly with the watch.

  • @theaussiewhinger

Great review of a lovely watch. Very fair commentary. We bought this exact model as a gift for my father many years ago. When the stunning black dial version came out in 2020, I just had to get one for myself. The only flaw in the design of the original cream dial version is the white date wheel. It really doesn't bother me as it's not a strong contrast. That said, Longines 'corrected' this in the black dial version, which has a black date wheel. It's now a perfect vintage-styled contemporary dress watch as the date is not noticeable until you need it. Size, finishing, quality, reliability etc are all excellent for a watch at any price. The Longines Flagship sits proudly next to my Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage and Longines Ultra-Chron.

Thank you for this nicely done review. You helped Longines sell a watch. What can I say-For me, you're convincing enough in your review.
I actually like EVERYTHING on this watch. Even the date window and its deliberately printed thin frame. Im sure there was a debate whether to frame it with gold or not and I like they chose the subtler way. Also I like its placement on the 6th hour mark instead of the traditional 3th hour mark thus giving it a subtle overall symmetry.
The second hand is also deliberately done in the style of the Swiss 50s and 60s watches instead of placing a big one in center. The small seconds hand give the watch more retro value.
Nothing is over the top, everything is in the line of acceptable and normal. Even though u personally might prefer bigger lugs - I like the size of these ones because it makes the watch more balanced and not on the sporty side.
Mine is arriving at August 15th from Switzerland due to the high demand of it. Cheers and thanks for helping me make a choice
