  • This is a vlog of the day I re-attempted the 5-minute mile and 500lb squat challenge. Once again I failed this challenge. I would really like to thank everyone who helped me:
    Gurph, Aifric and Paid. For keeping me alive on the day, and to Rob and Sherene from Ascension Training in Epsom for traveling over to give me all the support I could have asked for.

    So 507 lbs and a 5:35 mile .... Is a fail? That's incredible to me. Those two skills are so opposed, to do both at that level is so impressive. I think this feat of strength is incredible. A 5 minute mile is arbitrary. Bravo to you. I hope you come to feel that this is pretty impressive.

      I agree it's arbitrary, but it isn't oppositional. A 5 minute effort still favors strength over actual endurance.

    The last 15 seconds of the run when you knew you didn't have it but you kept pushing anyway was a beautiful example of resolution, toughness, and mental fortitude. Thanks for sharing.

      It kinda makes me think that in exercise science, can you have an athlete be that strong in weight lifting and be fast runner or have an endurance and stamina of triathletes. There’s always a trade off and 1 has to give for you to focus in one thing. Does having extra muscles hindered his run? Could daire losing muscle mass produce the same strength he has now? Lets ask from sika bro sports scientist!

    In every possible respect this video has to be regarded as a raging success. To have someone speak so candidly about a process/experience is an absolute rarity. Overwhelmingly, people fail prior to succeeding and this is a refreshing reminder of that. Fitz’s attitude and performance is a monument of colossal fortitude and resilience. This is of far greater use to athletes than some dime a dozen success story. If you want that, there’s the Disney channel.

    I have such a great respect for your candid and honest presentation of your journey through this INCREDIBLY INTENSE training. Some of the best athletes in the world cannot get close to your run times or squat, let alone BOTH on the same day.

    I was a full time athlete (rowing) for around 2 and a half years and for about 2 years amateur prior to that. I dedicated my life to this and I ended up failing to make it to Worlds or the Olympics despite training 14 times a week(ish) for years.
    I remember the crushing awful feeling of failure and I have been in your shoes before. You sacrifice time, emotional, physical and psychological energy and you don't make it.
    It's crushing. However with time will come more perspective and it will hurt less. You have achieved a phenomenal physical feat even though right now it might feel worthless to you.
    Allow yourself to feel the hurt, disappointment, frustration and anger at all of this but dwell for too long.
    I'm proud of what you've done and sharing a hard day this candidly takes bravery. Well done Fitz.

    Even though I knew the result my pulse was racing watching the final attempt.
    It was an amazing effort and frankly inspiring seeing you carry on after you knew you had missed the time because that must have really sucked.

    Bro...running an 8:00 mile and still being able to squat 500 is impressive...sub 6:00 is crazy. My fastest mile time ever was 6:35 and I think at that time was max squat was like 345 I think. Serious respect bro. How many people in the world can even squat 405 and run a sub 7:00?! Really man amazing work.

    This sort of thing seems Very similar to a 2k Test on the erg in rowing, a passable “elite athlete” time being a 6:00 - 6:20 (depending on ur weight) and a combination of strength and power and very good aerobic fitness , somewhere between a sprint and steady state,
    Likewise to the run, I’ve never felt more pain in my life than the last 500m on a 2k Test

    Impressive effort and the cheering and support from your team was amazing to witness. Running is so hard to improve when you don't have talent. I mean a have been struggling with cooper test for 10+ years and no where near where i want to be. But i do believe you have 5 minute mile in you. Keep some running even if it's just easy pace in your program and slowly start building the base for next attempt. Ofc that squat is so impressive on its own already. These challenges are fun to follow and i hope you keep doing them

    I can understand your feeling of disappointment and the downer of missing your goal. We all set these targets for ourselves no matter the size and it’s human nature to not feel too great about not achieving those markers, I get pissed off with myself if I miss a rep , something that ultimately has no to little effect on the session overall.
    But man, you’ve achieved great numbers on the day, there’s not many people who could rock up and do what you just did. You’ve experienced massive improvements and bettered yourself physically and mentally during this training period. Massive congratulations to you mate.

    Great attempt.
    The warm up for the run is just as important as the warm up for the squat. Surprised you didn't show it.

    Incredible attempt! It's not for the faint of heart. I also do "hybrid" type training, trying my hand at some weightlifting as well as a lot of cycling, and it's pretty fucking hard. It's fucking impressive what you did, even though you didn't quite get to where you wanted to.

    Seems like you could shift some focus from the squat to the run. 230 seemed to move really well-I bet you could still do it at 5-6kg lower body weight which would help immensely on the run.

    Hey there!!
    I think trata mile is amazing man, and the back SQ too! I’ve been training for many many years crossfit and weightlifting, and i’ve been traning for two years to be a firefighter, so i know how hard it is to run and lift weights.
    If this makes you feel better:
    - My best 1K is 3:05 and 2k is 7:05
    - My best Back Sq is 140
    I cant even imagine how hard your training must be, I wish I could be as strong and fast as you are! Keep at it, you will do it!

    Heart breaking mate sorry it didn’t go the way you wanted but inspiring all the same. If you want to take a break from running a supertotal would be really cool to watch. I’ve tried to program for one myself and I found it extremely difficult to balance.

    I know you've put up an extensive video catalogue of your short runs working up to this, but I don't recall any longer (3+ mile) training sessions that would create the stimulus for mitigating fatigue when doing short distance like this. Regardless a valiant display of perseverance in the face of adversity.

    I'll say it again: Ikea end table assembly in five minutes. You can prep tools and parts beforehand, but assembly to completion must be within 5:00. Personally, I think you'll destroy it.
