    Shin splints are horrendous. My two pence as a competitive runner. 1. Increase cadence (Lessens impact forces) 2. Play around with the very minor adjustments in the direction you foot is pointing when you contact the ground 3. Control your right leg better as its not following a very straight path, it causes lots of torsion through your left leg.

    Back when I was running collegiate track, ibuprofen in combo with acetaminophen made the most intense shin splint pain just about disappear temporarily. This is great in the moment but certainly prolongs the dealing with the stress injury.
    Your run is pretty bouncy for a big guy, which is also probably not helping your splints. Though I have been out of running competitively for 13 years and my advice may be moot.

    Running under 5 in the mile can be trained, but the running training I see in these videos is so far off the mark it makes me question if this is a joke or if you genuinely don’t know what a typical program to achieve that kind of time looks like.
    Against my better judgement, for the sake of anyone who is interested and doesn’t realize what they would need to do:
    At least 20 to 30 miles per week, 40 being ideal, spread over 6 days each week with the other day as rest. Almost all of that is easy mileage but with speedwork on 2 days each week: 1 of shorter intervals, the other longer intervals. The shorter intervals day could consist of a mile easy for warm up and cool down and 3 miles total volume at faster pace broken up into intervals. E.g. 12 by 400m at 70s to 72s with 90 seconds rest between each is the sort of workout a 5 minute miler could do once each week. The longer interval day might be a mile warm up and cool down with 5 by 1600m at 5:40 and 3 minutes rest between each, for a 5 minute miler.
    A normal person would start at whatever mileage they could handle and do 3 weeks at that mileage x, 1 week down at 80% of x, then do the next 4-week cycle at 110% of x for the previous cycle with the 4th week of each cycle at 80% of that cycle’s mileage. I.e. 4-week cycles each one a 10% increase in total mileage from the previous. Do that, with speedwork at an appropriately scaled volume and intensity, for as long as it takes.
    I ran distance for 20 years, through high school and college, with a 4:27 mile to my name and enough experience to know that isn’t even good: loads of high schoolers crush my college best. But I was a bigger dude for a runner and had to grind to see some success. If anybody watching this actually wants to train running, what I outlined above is a good plan.

    • @dfitz5384
      @dfitz5384 Před 3 lety +9

      That is almost exactly the training I did. I think you oversimplified the Overspeed prescription slightly, and I fear those volume levels may not be perfect for everyone. But yeah, if you think the running training was made up solely of the running which featured in the blogs, I'm afraid you may have taken us up wrong, most weeks were 4-5 running sessions.

    • @harrisonpotter8659
      @harrisonpotter8659 Před 3 lety +2

      @@sikastrength The first video the algorithm pointed me to was your Weightlifting Coaches React to 2014 World Championships video. I watched it in full and stayed around because the commentary was top-notch: informative and entertaining. Great banter. Thank you for your good content.
      I came here hoping to see you succeed. I am confident that running a sub-6:00 mile or even sub-5:40 mile is something you could just up and do after a bit of training, but sub-5:00 is no joke: I tuned in ready to be impressed. It's enough that you could make it a monthly installment where you describe your training for the past month and measure your progress with a monthly mile time trail.
      Whatever you decide to do, I will be rooting for you. I am going to go back to watching but never commenting. Good luck.
