People forget 2014. Costa Rica topping a group and knocking Italy and England out in group stage was more of a shock than Japan topping and knocking Germany out. Portugal getting out of group stage thanks to USA and Spain the world champions knocked out in group stage thanks to Chile. I'd say 2014 was on the same level of upsets as 2022. So it's really not that long ago. That being said 2022 has been a cracker :)

Remember the group with France, Germany, Portugal, and Hungary at the last Euro? I feel like there are at least 3 groups that are like that at this world cup. Definitely the most entertaining world cup I have ever watched. Hopefully the knockout phase will be even better.

Japan going through is a risky bet but they do have arguments. In that same page, I see Morocco passing through as well. Spain showed that when they are locked by the opponent they havent developed alternatives tactically. I see Spain losing control and slipping errors that Morocco have shown they can take advantage of. I see why you see Portugal winning based on the talent pool, but man i dont see them unlocking Switzerland that easy specially with Santos overly shy proposal. Switzerland has a slight upper hand i would say.
I'd wish you were right, but I don't think Switzerland has the upper hand in this one. I absolutely believe they can advance, but overall Portugal have got the edge imo.

What a group stage, no team got the 3 win clean sheet. Only 3 teams are loss-less England, The Netherlands and Morocco. Great competition indeed.

As Croat I can't understand why nobody is taking us seriously. We are current runner-ups and we show with side that is maybe even better then 4 years ago. Yet somehow people are thinking Japan will finish us. Japan that beated worst German side I remember and Spain that didn't want in our part of bracket. This group was much stronger then one we had last time. Marocco could also pull upset. Belgium played best game of tournament against us. If they played like that against Canada or Marocco I doubt they would be out. These 0-0 draws arent cute in group stage, but if our defense can keep level they are on currently I don't fear anybody.
It's better that way, we 🇭🇷 go all the way unnoticed and under the radar from all the media attention and stories. Rematch with 🇫🇷 in the finals. Japan won't be able or do the same pressure as the Belgians tried the last 20 mins. I remember the hype about young fast and talented Canada VS old Croatia and that didn't end well for some.
Japan game will be tough but if we play right I see us winning with at least a 2 goal difference

Something is telling me that almost all of these games are going to go to Extra-Time and Penalties, the "big teams" aren't that much better than the so called "underdogs", which we've already seen many times in this WC. So I'd expect a LOT of Penalty shootouts, and the way this World Cup has gone, it might just be a South Korea vs Morocco final haha

Remember most teams that guaranteed a place in round of 16 by the second match, rotated players heavily on 3rd game. While the “under dogs” had to play at their best all the time. Not to say we won’t have more awesome surprises, but if the big nations play their best … well…

This has been a very good World Cup so far football wise
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me, Entertainment sure, quality no. 2002 and 2014 on entertainment were by far the best. 2018 for me was the peak of quality and slightly entertainment. Every team brought it and tried to score, although there weren't that many surprises it was absolutely engrossing. Argentina vs France, Mexico vs Germany, South Korea vs Germany, Belgium vs Brazil and Japan vs Belgium.
If Qatar had started off how these last round of matches had gone, with quality in the final third, surely it'll be up there but those dead rubber games were just gross

This world cup has destroyed my bracket prediction. You have some giant brass gonads in making predictions after the group stage matches we have had for this world cup.
You didn't do a recap of Group G and H. I was really enjoying those as well.
This world cup is so on fire, you miss a match at your own risk. Every match had had something and the spectacle has been spectacular.
That heavily rotated Brazil side does look strong on paper, but without Neymar this team seems to lose some of its confidence and “aura”.

I surely did not expect this result nor the power display they put on against Switzerland. Granted the swiss coach messed up by making adjustments with Ronaldo in mind, but I still did not expect Portugal to rise to this level (even though we've all been eagerly waiting to see this, given the squad we've got). Still a bit of a hit or miss, so concentration levels must be higher than ever for the quarter finals against Morocco!

As a Swiss with French relatives, I watched both team’s games… Brazil will be the champion, their defense is literally a fucking wall of CONCRETE. The attack is at a higher level than most teams as well. Seriously I love watching football games and never saw such an impressive defense before.

I watched all matches from group F since my country Croatia played in it. And Morocco really really suprised me. They are leatheal against teams that love ball. Pulled 0-0 against us then beated Belgium and are now going against Spain who won't like how they play. Great team.

We did not get the review for the last games of Group H and Group G.
You didnt mention how Gvardiol is killing in defence in all 3 matches
Also, we actually played well againts Belgium, we dominated them in First 30 min and until 80 min when we started to close the match
Some you may call game againts Belgium luckly, but when a player like lukaku missed 4 great chances, thats not luck anymore. Give him 4 more and he would still miss them all
Croatia already proven that they can defend againts counter attacks againts all 3 opponets in our group so we can do it againts Japan (like Canada, they can run fast, even faster, but not for all 90 mins) and our mildfield can neutralise them if they try to take a ball (brozović can run with Iron lungs, modrić can make plays with deadly passes and kovačić will drift wide and make an action)
Unlike other big countries at this tourmenet, Zlatko Dalić never caculated or underestimated any of our opponets, maybe we looked weak againts Morocco but they didnt dominated the match againts croatia
This match againts Japan will show if this New and younger croatian squad can go all the way or not
When lukaku came on y’all were clinging on for dear life lucky for Croatia and really unlucky for Belgium, he was still not healthy/fit and missed sitter I feel bad for him 😢

@@maxmarks3503 not a single team won all 3 games, am sure the bookies made more wrong predictions in the group stages than any other world cup in the last 30 years. The number of late twists on match day 3 etc. Generally all 4 teams in a group having a chance on day 3 happens in maybe 1 group. This time it happened in majority of the groups.

Bold...I disagree, but as a Canadian hockey fan I have learned the Swiss can surprise anyone. They have a very structured and team-focused approach to sports that makes them very dangerous if you are complacent. Never count them out.

I have to disagree with you on Southgate's lineup. Absent an injury to Sterling, Rashford doesn't see another minute. It's hard to play for a nil-nil draw or a 1-nil loss when one of your starters has scored 3 times in 110 minutes on the pitch.

I know, you all cheer and want underdogs to win the WC. The only good teams who lost their game quality are Germany and Belgium. Other than that, they play for entertainment. Portugal and Spain's losts were to punish Uruguay and Germany. Brazil and France's lost were due to their team rotations. Argentina lost was suspicious as well.
You can't trust World Cup in Asia. 20 years ago, we watched a great football disgrace. It should be a lesson. Bribing ruined the art of football.

You seem to totally misunderstand The Netherlands, LVG is a very tactical manager and, even though they might not play free flowing football under the big man, they are very disciplined and get the job done efficiently.... which is his default setting to be honest and its given him shit loads of success. As I'm older than you I've probably seen more of LVG's career than you I guess....

Morocco passing through spain, especially in the penalty process, is not actually an upset.
This spain is obvious lacking the ability to do meaningfull stuff with the ball.
They know how to hold the ball, but they have no idea what to do with it.
Also, spain in the penalty process should be disqualified by default at this point.
