The best part is that most living British people have contributed to ending slavery because the debt we got into ending it nearly 200 years ago was paid off in 2014 our taxes had been going towards this debt.
Also Britain (unlike Portugal) bought slaves from African Kingdoms, some of these Kingdoms had been selling slaves during the time of the Romans. After Britain made slavery illegal multiple African Kingdoms collapsed due to slavery being their main source of income (I should also mention some of these Kingdoms only became prominent because of profits generated from slavery.)
Despite Britains efforts though Africans continued to enslave and sell each other, one of the most notable people being Ghezo king of Dahomey, Ghezo promised to end the slave trade in 1852, but resumed his slaving efforts in 1857 and 1858. He later died in 1858.

The reason USA became a superpower so fast was because they have so many resources in their country **COUGH** OIL **COUGH** , yes, Britain does have a lot of good resources too (which is why people have continuously tried and sometimes succeeded to conquer us), but USA is far bigger so obviously has more + the UK's population density is higher than the US's. This means China and the UK and other less fortunate countries than the USA had to actually work to become global influences, such as the UK. If the British Empire wasn't a thing, democracy wouldn't have been spread so far, freedom wouldn't have been given if it weren't for the common ideals of British Citizens that were spread to its colonies, and quite obviously, the entire CZcams community would speak a different language to English- Probably Chinese or Spanish.

A practice literally as old as recorded human history, developed independently in every part of the globe and overnight a quarter of the planet made it illegal because Britain forced them to. And that’s just where Britain made it illegal directly and doesn’t include the massive pressure it applied to other European and global nations.

Britain has 'discovered' a lot of places over the years which they relinquished after WWII because being a ruthless and domineering Empire doesn't quite have the same ring to it as it used to. The Falklands have 'belonged' to various different nations since the 16th c. atleast and it should have been given up a long time ago and then we wouldn't be in this mess. When he returned 3 years later they'd all vanished without a trace apart from the word Croatoan carved into a wooden post. History social media pages make it out like it's a complete mystery when historians are 90% sure as to what happened to them. Roanoke was always intended as a temporary settlement so John White stated to the settlers before his voyage back to England to carve a message into the tree as to where they were relocating and to leave a maltese cross if it was by force, John White found no cross on the tree. The Croatoan was the name of the Native tribe that lived nearby and as historians have pointed out there were no signs of violence or forced relocation and no graves have ever been discovered there either. English settlers that came after the Roanoke colony also noted that certain Natives living in that area had European features. It's highly likely that the settlers simply moved in and married in with the Croatoan who were known for having good relations with the English settlers that came after.

In fact, the great British expansion begins after the European continental wars, which have destroyed the continent. It's the same story as Japan, which never had European empires there, nor was it occupied by the Mongols, nor did it have communism. Because? For the island and the storms. It's actually one thing I kind of appreciate about my country's, British, history. The fact that instead of fighting to the death to save an Empire on its last legs, we slowly just gave it all back in the 20th Century and formed the Commonwealth instead. I know it's probably more due to the time our Empire ended more than anything else, if it was declining in the 18th or 19th Century, a lot of bloodshed was probably likely... But anyways, yeah, as a nation, we did a lot of horrible things that I do not condone, but at least we were able to mature in a sense.

Thank you for your video! You pack a lot in, in just 20 minutes! I love the way you run the dates in the top corner. Very helpful. As an American, I'd like to make one correction to your script. Most of the original settlers of the British colonies were leaving England in search of religious freedom, not to spread their faith as missionaries to the New World. The Puritans and Catholics did not have freedom and had to leave in order to practice freely. The colony of Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore, who had to step down from Parliament because he was Catholic. You are right, though, that later colonists came to seek wealth and land, after the first waves survived and showed promise. Thanks again!

I'm from Glasgow in Scotland and we went through a period where a lot of the old sandstone buildings were knocked down (not all of them were, the people trying to redevelop our city got their act together), and I went to Edinburgh for a job interview a couple of weeks ago and realised that we are the only city that done this but they also managed to sort of blend the old and the new together and it looks fantastic, where as in Glasgow you get beautiful sandstone buildings that used to be tenements that are now just rows of flats with normal bricks covering up the holes they made in the large restoration of the city that wound up failing and with the creation of several new towns including Drumchapel in Clydebank and Cumbernauld in the middle of fricken nowhere.

Pretty good, as a portuguese,I saw you forgot to mention events like Anglo-Portuguese alliance, being the very oldest alliance in the world still in place.
India was not completely under British rule, there were regions controlled by the portuguese such as Daman, Goa and Diu.
In the moments before WWI you forgot the British ultimatum to the anglo-portuguese alliance due to the need of the Brits to connect their colonies in Africa, thus not being posible with the portuguese unification of borders of Angola and Mozambique.
In WWI, Brits wanted the help of portuguese, evoking the alliance, resulting in the entrance of Portugal in WWI, that was very fruitful to Brits but not so to portuguese, which had a great loss of men and increased tension inside Portugal, resulting in the fall of monarchy and the institution of the republic.
Overall, your video is very very good, but I was expecting to see more facts regarding the anglo-portuguese alliance, which was and still is an alliance which bonds the two nations very deeply, and had a major role in the course of history of both nations.
