On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago on 6-9-17.
We're looking at a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible in Mandalay Red Paint with the Factory upgrade Tri Power engine.
The car's Owner is George Hansen. George’s had this car since February 2017. The restoration on this car is stellar, and it looks like it just came off the showroom floor.
George remembers seeing an ad for this cars front grill in 1958 and that image made a positive impact on him. He hoped one day he could purchase one, and this year that happened.
Congratulations George on the purchase of a car you’ve hoped for!

Obviously built during an era when stylists called the shots. Difficult to believe GM were offering such a heady mix of glitzy ornamentation and rakish looks to the American buying public only one year after the McDonnel Douglas F-4 Phantom made its first flight. This car, for me at least, sums up the American motorists' relationship with their automobiles. The Tripower engine makes do with one carburetor during normal running, numbers two and three kicking in only when the throttle is opened wider. That's something I had to look up. Another great video from Mr. Costabile. Thank you, Sir !

      @robmcgowan4034 Před 3 lety +5

@@garymckee8857 I do as well, Gary. The thing is most styling ideas had been used up by the early 1970's anyway. Then the oil embargo and by the late '70s the cars were look-a-like sedans. No more pillarless coupes either 2 or 4 door. Only sedans. At least 2 door sedans were still offered, but even those went away in the '80s. There's virtually no demand for any 2 door cars at all now, period. It's all rent-a-car style 4 door sedans, SUV's/minivans, crossovers and trucks. Even the Camaro (revived in 2009) is going away with the '23 model due to lack of sales. The sales have been steadily declining for several years. Mustang's not doing that great, but well enough. The Challenger continues to do very well. Younger people are only interested in utility if they even want a vehicle instead of Uber or Lyft. They see 'cars' as transportation appliances anyway because it's been that way their whole lives. Government safety requirements, the outrageous cost of cars, the insurance this, that and the other have all created the boring situation we've been in most of MY life, and I was born in '57. Unfortunately I think cars are going to look pretty much the way they do now from here on out. It goes with everything else. Nothing is flourishing anymore. Music, style, fun, carefree times, all gone. So these uptight, boring sedans we see everywhere go with these times the way this Pontiac went with those. They're a mirror reflection of the times they were produced, then and now. That's the one commonality that never changes.

Money to ski at Boyne mountain in the winter , boating on the Great Lakes .
I grew up collecting those " Jo - Hann " model cars when I was young . Those. Chrysler imperial 1966 convertibles. Blue/ white interior ...
..., Thanks for communicating with me .
The cars you spend your effort and time reminding , me ..
... how special life was back then .
      Thanks .
So , we both it seems , have about 20 or so years to live .
Let's see what bullshit new cars come up
with . It will be awesome .

When I was a little baby, my mom and dad had Pontiacs. My dad drove a 1959 Star Chief 2 door to work and my mom housewifed with us kids in a 1960 Safari wagon. 389 cubic inches and had to buy premium gas for the compression ratio. But boy they had no problem climbing the curly road up out of the north end of Des Moines, Washington! Cruising the wagon at 80 mph across to Spokane on US 10/ I 90 as I 90 was being built. I watch these videos and say "My dad gave up the Star Chief! Ahhhhh!" But I got a 1966 Lemans out of the deal and it is pretty cool to drive in 2022.

The owner is right - the amount of effort that went into all the small details and embellishments is amazing- and they changed every year across a full line of models. Amazing really and unthinkable today. These huge behemoths are not to everyone’s taste and often, mechanically at least, they were unsophisticated but one has to appreciate them just for the effort that went into them.

When I was a kid, there were a lot of late '50s tailfin and chrome masterpieces around. They were so hot I thought they were the new ones and that the drab, boring cars of the '60s were the old ones. Suddenly the tailfin cars started disappearing - and I realized I had it backwards. The dreary cars were new and the gorgeous ones old! It was the first of many times in my life I wondered what the hell people were thinking, abandoning something good for something less.

What a lot of people don't realize is there were a lot of cars that really went by the way in the 70's for example because of issues like rust. So you don't get to see a lot of the transition's in the style changes because of this problem. For example there were a lot of cars like the Dodge Duster, Dodge Dart, Ford Comet and Maverick and so on that were popular but the rust problem demised their appearance today. Unless you live in states like California's.

@@drdecker1 first off it's Plymouth Duster and Mercury Comet not Dodge Duster and Ford Comet. Second in my lifetime I feel that it was the cars of the 60s and early 70s that were the most drop dead gorgeous, not taking anything away from the 50s, From the time that the feds started to regulate the automakers that's when design and styling amongst other things started going downhill. Nowadays most newer cars look like dog shit!

Back around 1979 or so, an old woman who lived by herself, in my neighbourhood drove this exact car, same colour, same year, but hers had an acrylic see through steering wheel. she was rich, of course.... and one early morning, i woke up hearing this putt putt, putt putt on the street, looked out, and there was mrs. burgoyne in her candy apple red, top down bonneville, slowly driving down the street headed toward her house. she had a kerchief on her head too, it was the perfect sight. that car was SO long that when she parked it in her garage, she could not fully close the garage door, about 2 feet of the car stuck out so the garage door was always only closed about 3/4, we could always see the back end of her car and know she was home. her brother owned the city newspaper and her family were well known. she's long since passed, her house is still there, i don't think anyone lives in it. the car long gone. but wow, what a memory.

My father bought me a 1959 Pontiac Catalina Convertible, used in 1966 for my 16th Birthday, with the Idea to be used for a paper route delivering The Miami Herald Newspaper. The route was on South Treasure Island on the 79th Street Causeway. My uncle was the Circulation Manager for the Herald and was the employee with the longest years of service about 50 years when he retired.
It turned out to be a bad choice due to the Wide Track width. The houses had a single car concrete driveway and garage. So by that year they all had a second car. Which they parked next to the curbside on each side of the street. I found it impossible to squeeze between the car obstacle course with the Pontiac. So I gave up newspaper delivery and got a part time after school Job and kept the Convertible.
I put a new black convertible top on it and found during the rainy season that a good bit of the floor was rusted out. After that started the saga repairing and upgrading the car.
Two years of effort went into all the improvements made.
I found just by chance, while driving through a fancy neighborhood, there was a 1959 Bonneville Convertible that had been totaled because the frame was bent. It was parked in the front driveway. I got out and looked at the car. There was the great Bonneville Interior like yours. Plus all the chrome appointments that are on your Red one. I met the owner and he told me his insurance company had paid him enough so he hadn't lost on the transaction. He gave me the car if I would have it towed away that week. How could I pass on that deal.
I had a good friend who was about my age whose father was a great mechanic and worked on GM Cars.
We disassembled both cars and reassembled the Bonneville's entire interior into the Catalina. All the best parts from Bonneville went into the Catalina. Including the dashboard, steering wheel, power windows, all leather White, Silver and Blue power bucket seats. It ended up looking just like the Bonneville Convertible you have, but it was White with the Black Convertible Top with a glass rear window.
This was my first and favorite car I ever owned. The best road car as far as comfort goes. I really enjoyed it for many years. Unfortunately I made the mistake of selling it to a collector in the area during the gas crisis of the Jimmy Carter Presidency. I couldn't find enough gas to keep driving it.
At least you are enjoying yours. I lost touch with the man who bought it. It was used in a couple of period films made in Miami. I believe in one Orange Bowl Parade.
