On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-13-20.
We're looking at a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible in Sunset Glow Paint. The car comes with the factory 389 CI V8 “Tri-Power” engine with 315 HP.
The car's Owner is Ken Nagel. Ken’s had this car since 2011. He shares he really thought this cars restoration was well done and enjoys the color combination. This one looks “showroom” new.

What makes these 50's cars so special is the little embellishments, like the badging, the chrome highlights, the deadly, but beautiful steering wheel and chrome / stainless steel / aluminium inlay in the dash and that typical 50's carpet and upholstery with the sparkles and attention to detail in the seat upholstery. Ken has some beautiful cars and that lovely Illinois countryside sets it all off beautifully.

This car was made when I was a year old but growing up I remember seeing them around. The color the design the chrome in and out that carpet was just beyond words. All that chrome and those wings were just outstanding. That tri-power motor had a lot of power. Just a outstanding rag top car. Had some really awesome options on this unit too. That color was really pretty nice to see from a distance and that engine sound was so neat as that car has a lot of oomph! I rally enjoyed this video and I always enjoy Mr. Nagal's cars. Hi, Lou! Ahh, yes, the 1959 Pontiac! This was the first of the Wide-Track Pontiacs, the first with the famous 389 V-8, the one that established the split grille and the arrowhead emblem as Pontiac symbols, and the one that put Pontiac on the road to becoming America's favorite middle-priced car brand and the glory days it would experience throughout the Sixties. It also earned Pontiac its first Motor Trend Car of the Year award, which it would also win in 1961 (for the Tempest), 1965 (for the entire lineup) and 1968 (for the GTO with the Endura bumper). And I would say the Bonneville convertible with Tri-Power was probably the best expression of it! Those twin-fin fenders took a lot of styling creativity for sure!
It's great that you and Ken had such a beautiful day to enjoy this car. My area has just been hit with 14 inches of snow as I write this. Many thanks to you and Ken for taking us along on this wonderful and Tri-Powerful Wide-Track ride!

As one would expect from Ken, an absolutely top-notch example of this top-of-the-line model car. A convertible with tri-power, buckets, and all the power options. It's hard to beat. This was the first year of the signature Pontiac split grille that would go on to represent the marquis until it's demise. I heard that these early wide-track Pontiacs caused quite a stir at car-washes because they didn't fit within the guide rails! 1959 was the peak of the proverbial "yank-tanks" and very soon consumers would fall out of favor with the excessive styling. The last gasp was 1960.

We occasionally get some 2 tone or leather/ fabric seats today but I can imagine the cost of doing the 3 colors now would be quite a bit and would seem out of place. Another gem. Good Lord. Being a man of a certain age, I miss the days when one saw these cars on the road on a regular basis, throughout the sixties into the early seventies.
The question I have is, when Ken restored this, was a glass insert used for the convertible top? The cars back then used plastic, which was unusable after a few years.

My father's first car was one of these, I can see why he was bedazzled by it. He graduated college, got his first career job and bought one of these in white. I never saw pictures of it though. It had a loose wire that was shorting everything out and racked up some major repair bills. He traded it for a '64 Catalina Ventura which proved to be very reliable.

That had to be like a money is No Object restoration. I can't imagine how much the guy that restored that thing had to charge in order to make a profit restoring it. It looks like there's 850 trillion hours of work restoring that thing to that level of perfection.
Every little sticker and tag a nut and bolt in that engine compartment is just like it came off the factory floor.
If the guy that restored it wasn't a super expert historian into that specific model then he had to do a lot of research to get all those little parts and pieces just right. Which of course added even more and more hours to the restoration project.

Love your show Lou. How come you didn't ask Ken didn't put the top down at any point? The drive down that long corn-lined road with you two tucked inside was very cool but Ken's final exit from the driveway could have been more stunning with the top down--as he sailed off into the heartland, no? My other question is, why a Pontiac when Mopar is really his thing.
